All announcements for insertion in the POLIOS GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. _ _ . 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue oj the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per . portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or boi'ough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an r ~' T of not less rank than Inspector, or analagous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond § Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Announcements concerning property lost or pwsons missing can only be accepted as advertisements. C. E. HOWARD VINCENT. COUNTY OF SOMERSET. APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF CONSTABLE. 62.— Candidates for the office of Chief Constable, which will become vacant on the 1st of July next, are requested to address their applications in writing ( marked " Chief Constable"), stating age, See., to the Clerk of the Peace, Wells, not later than the 7th May next. Copies only of testimonials should accompany ap- plications, but the originals should be forthcoming in the event of an applicant being required to attend before the Police Committee. The pay of the Chief Constable will ( subject to the approval of the Court of Quarter Sessions) be £ 500 per annum, with an allowance of a house ( as herein- after mentioned) and £ 100 per annum to cover all expenses and allowances whatever, except printing, advertising, telegrams, postage, and stationery. lie will be required to reside in the house occupied by the present Chief Constable at Glastonbury; he will occupy the house rent free, but he will have to pay the usual tenant's rates and taxes, and for gas and tenant's repairs. The salary above mentioned will include remunera- tion for all duties performed, whether as Chief Constable under the Contagious Diseases ( Animals) Act or otherwise. The appointment will be during the pleasure of the Justices in General Quarter Sessions assembled, and subject to such regulations as they may from time to time make. The following regulations, made by the Secretary of State, apply to the office:— His age, unless he is promoted or transferred from another office in the police, or under other special circumstances to be approved of by the Secretary of State, must not exceed 45 years. He must be certified by a Medical Practitioner to be in good health and of sound constitution, and fitted to perform the duties of the office. He must be recommended to the Secretary of State by the Magistrates, in whom the appointment is vested, as a person of good character and qualifications. Canvassing of the Justices by candidates or their friends, whether personally or by letter ( except by printed circular enclosing testimonials, if any), is viewed with disfavour by the court. The Editor desires to call attention to flic fact that all photographs of prisoners in custody, transmitted to the Director of Criminal Investigations, for purposes of identi- fication are seen by 1he police or waiders who visit all prisoners under remand, in the Metropolitan Police District three times a week. This system, established in 1879, has been the means of ascertaining the previous convictions of 7000 prisoners, and affords great facilities to Chief Officers of Police, and the Governors of Her Majesty's Prisons. _ Such photographs arc also compared with the albums in the Convict Office containing the portraits of all Convicts liberated in the Kingdom, which are further open to the personal examination of any police officer or warder. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. £ 10 0 REWARD. Whereas at 1.15 p. m., on Sunday, the 9tli March, 1884, ANNIE YATES was found dead at No. 12, Burton Crescent, St. Pancras, supposed haying been suffocated by a man unknown ; and whereas a verdict of Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown has been returned by a Coroner's Jury :— A Reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT, 2.— WHEREAS about 1 a. m on the morning of 26th February, 1884, an EXPLOSION with felonious intent was caused in the Oloak Room of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, Victoria Station ; and WHEREAS about 5.30 p. m. the preceding day, 25th February, 1884, a brown leather portmanteau, 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, containing dynamite and clockwork arrangements for exploding the same, was deposited in the Cloak Room of the Great Western Railway, Paddington Station; and WHEREAS between 6 and 8 p. m. on the same day, a black American cloth portmanteau [ much worn] 22 inches long, 11 inches wide, and inches deep, also containing dynamite, and similar arrangements to explode contents, was deposited in the Cloak Room of the South Eastern Railway Company, Charing Cross Station; and WHEREAS between 7 and 8 p. m. on the same day, a black leather bag, about 18 inches long, by 9 inches deep, with nickel fastenings, also containing dynamite, and similar arrangements to explode the contents, was deposited in the Cloak Room of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, Ludgate Hill Station. All with felonious intent. Of the above reward, £ 1,000 will be paid by the Secretary of State for the Home Department to any person ( not being a member of a Police Force in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the person or persons by whom these crimes were caused or attempted, and the Directors of the London, Brighton and South Coast, Great Western, South Eastern, and London, Chatham and Dover Railway Companies, will pay on the part of each of those Companies a reward of £ 2S0, in addition to that offered by Her Majesty's Government, for the same information, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's most Gracious to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. The following are the descriptions of Five Men supposed to have been concerned in these outrages:— 1st.— Age 40; medium height; hair light brown; moustache fair, rather long; dress, black ribbed cutaway coat, dark trousers, round black felt hat, black ribbed overcoat. An American. 2nd.— Age 28; height 5 ft. 4 to 6 in., . thin face ; complexion, hair, eyes, and moustache dark; dress, dark clothes, rough dark overcoat, round hard felt hat. An American. 3rd.— Age 29 ; height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in. ; large round red face ; light brown hair, slight moustache ; square built, turns his toes out when walking, soldierly appearance; dress, light tweed tourist suit, lace boots, soft felt hat. 4th.— Age 30; height 5 ft. 5 in.; brown hair, full beard ; small features, short thick neck, stiff built; dress, light brown mixture suit, black fur cap, white muffler, lace boots. 5th.— Age 25 ; height oft. 10in. ; fair complexion, dark beard and whiskers; dress, black overcoat, broad brimmed black soft felt hat. O CITY OF LONDON. 3. £ 200 REWARD WHEREAS on the afternoon of Saturday, the 29th of March, 1884, EDWIN JAMES PERKINS was found murdered in the cellar of No. 8, Arthur Street, West, in the above city. A Reward of <£ 100 will be paid by the Commissioner of Police of the City of London to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, to which amount, with the same object, a further sum of <£ 100 will be added by Her Majesty's Government, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. information to be given to the Inspector of the Detective Department, 86, Old Jewry, London, or at any Police Station. D.)— For obtaining money by false pretences and unlawfully practising as a solicitor, WILLIAM COX, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., proportionate build, complexion florid, blotchcs on face, hair ( bald top of head), beard, and whiskers ( turning grey), fair, stoops slightly, and looks on the ground when walking ; dress shabby, dark clothes. May be found practising as a solicitor in a provincial town. Warrant issued. 5.— D Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences, ROSEL, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair black ; dress, light grey tweed suit and black hard felt hat. A German. Warrant issued. 6.— G Division.— For stealing, 30 gold rings, 1 18c. 3 coil snake coloured, set 2 rose diamonds for eyes, 1 do. bright gilt, set 2 rose diamonds for eyes, l'do. coloured, 1 do. platina, 1 do. double snake, set 2 roses and 2 rubies, 1 do. sard, 1 do. blood stone Roman set bright gold, 1 do, blood stone dead set, 1 do. blood stone dead set, shield carved shoulder, 1 do. single stone coral, 1 do. thick, set bright ruby in centre, brilliant on each side, 1 do. dead set, and several set blood stones— VAUGHAN, age 27, height 5 ft. 5. in., stout, complexion pale, hair very fair, eyes hazel, peculiar twitching of the mouth when talking; dress, black frock coat, light tweed trousers, black felt hat, broad brim. Warrant issued. 7.— M Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip tion of JOHN OWEN, who absconded, 3rd ult., stealing £ 213, the moneys of his employer, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight, thin face. complexion sallow, hair and . eyes dark ; dress, dark Newmarket overcoat, dark suit under, hard felt hat, which he usually wears on one side. CITY OF LONDON. 8— For fraudulent bankruptcy, JAMES CHAP- MAN, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair, whiskers, and moustache, light brown ; dress respectable. A solicitor, has resided at The Homestead, Shrewsbury Lane, Shooters Hill, and Clacton- on- Sca. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, Old Jewry, London. BERKSHIRE. 0.— Reading { Borough).— For stealing 15th inst, a silver Geneva watch, J plate, silver chain curl) pattern, S. 15. on swivel, silver compass attached, a black diagonal frock coat, a pair of small ribbed light tweed trousers, and a pair of men's white cotton drawers, A MAN age about 35, height medium, complexion fair, low forehead; dress, light tweed suit. Left behind a parcel containing two children's dresses supposed stolen. Information to Chief Supt. Purchase, Heading. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 10.— Cam b riclge ( Borough :.— For . stealing a quan- tity of lead, timber, slate and drain pipes, JOSEPH LOWINGS, age about 32, height about 5 ft. G in., slight complexion, hair and eyes dark, moustache beard and whiskers ( slight ) dark, round shoulders, and carries his head forward when walking; dress, dark brown check suit, black hard felt hat. A bricklayer, has been in business as a builder. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable, Turrall, Cambridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 11.— C arnarvon ( County),— For stealing, in September, 1882, at Llandudno, a tricycle, No. 9509, jnakers, Hillman, Herbert & Cooper, Coventry, HALL, age about 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, very large feet; dress, brown suit. Had in his possession a medal marked Hall and Brown, Ludgatc- iiill and Dublin. Warrant issued. 12.— Carnarvon { County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, HUGH WILLIAMS, alias CALEB GLEEIIII. L, age about 50. height about 5 ft. 10 in., stout, complexion fiesh. hair daik brown, whiskers ( turning grey) dark ; dress, dark overcoat, vest, and trou- ers, and high black hat. CHESHIRE. 13.— Altrincham { County).— For failing to notify change of address and obtaining money by false pre- tences.— License holder THOMAS JAMES, Office No. 23789, age 38, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion dark, hair and eyes brown, lost 3 top teeth, scars on head, under throat, in right palm, on 2nd right and 1st left lingers, hairy mole on chin. Sentenced at Gloucester the 9th April, 1878, to 7 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 8th December, 1883, lleg. No. 461. Warrant issued. Photograph can be obtained on application. Information to Supt. Leigliton, Altrincham. 14.— Runcorn { County).— For failing to report.— License holder WILLIAM POWER. Office No. 19856, age 37. height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, 3 moles on right arm, long thin nose, ruptured side. Sentenced at Chester 17 th December, 1874, to 10 years penal servitude for beastiality. Licensed 22nd August, 1882, Reg. No. 732A'. Information to Supt. Williamson, Runcorn. 11.— Stockport, { Borough).— For stealing, 27th \ ilt.. a silver Geneva stop watch, centre seconds, No. 78194, and 29th ult, a lady's small gold Geneva watch, gold dial. No. 105062, long fine silver neckchain, sma! l watch key attached. A blue black cloth jacket, trimmed black fur. A plain white flannel petticoat, calico binding— MARY LEONARD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair ( wavy in front) dark, high cheek bones, masculine appearance, good teeth, one upper front tooth deficient, large scar on chin and temple : dress, brown trimmed black, old black shawl and bonnet, trimmed red, sidespring boots. A tailoress. Stated she had been employed by Messrs. Coop, Wigan, and has often spoken about Brighton and London. Information to Chief Constable Staples. Stockport. DERBYSHIRE. 16.— Derby { Borough)— For stealing, 21st ult., a gold watch, chain, key and locket ( recovered) and a large oval gold brooch, yellow stone in centre, a pair of embossed oval shape gold ear- drops, A MAN, age 30 to 35, height, 5 ft. - 1 or 5 in., slight, complexion sallow, moustache dark brown; dress, brown over- coat, black felt hat, carried an umbrella; and a WOMaN, age about 30, tall and slight, complexion fair, hair light, small eyes and high cheekbones ; dress, claret colour, Newmarket ulster, dark hat and short black veil, wore a gold chain outside ulster, and carried a small bag and umbrella. They spoke with a foreign accent, and are believed to- be Germans, Information to Chief Constable, Delacombe, Derby. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Cheltenham { County).— Vor stealing £ 10, EDGAR PAGE, age about 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , complexion pale, hair, moustache, and beard ( straight) dark, eyes large, thick lips, stoops slightly and walks quickly; dress, dark overcoat, ditto under, and high black hat; carries an umbrella. Native of Chelten- ham. May endeavour to emigrate. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. HEREFORDSHIRE. 18.— Hereford { City).— For stealing 1 brown speckled ulster, with breast pocket, 2 black ribbed cloth jackets ( one with buttons down back, the other double- breasted) ; 3 dresses ( two blue and white check, one grey alpaca trimmed black) ; 2 pairs boots ( one lace, one sidespring) ; 1 brown skirt trimmed black velvet; 1 grey linsey striped petticoat; and a brown black alpaca umbrella, 1 black chip hat, trimmed velvet and blpck feather:— HARRIET LLEWELLYN, age 20, short, complexion and hair fair, eyes very light blue ; native of Shirley, near Birmingham ; and MARY POWYS, age 16, medium height, complexion and hair dark, lisps slightly ; native of Downton, near Ludlow. Both supposed dressed in stolen property. Information to Chief Constable Richardson, Here- ford. KENT. 19— Borstal Prison).— 29th ult., escaped at 8.30 a. m., HENRY BIGNALL, a convict, age 24, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, liair brown, eyes blue ; dress, prison clothing, drab jacket vest, and breeches, marked with broad arrow, blue stockings with red stripes. Information to the Governor, 11, M. Convict Prison, Borstal, near Rochester. LANCASHIRE. 20.— Little Bolton { County).— For stealing, 24th ult., at Blackrod, two watches ( one silver lever, stop, maker. Thomas Milner, Wigan, on dial. No. 1745, long silver chain attached, one silver, plated or gold hands maker, ( supposed) Richard II. Entwistle, No. 2921), and some silver and copper coins, A MAN, qge about 30, height, 5 ft. 1 in., hair and moustache dark brown, round1 shoulders, birthmark right of forehead; dress, dark mixture coat and vest, black cloth trousers, sidespring boots, black hard felt hat. Supposed native of Wigan.. Information to Supt. Holland, Little Bolton. £ 1 Reward. 21.— Old Trafford { County).— For stealing, 19th ult., at Eccles, a small square brass travelling clock, glass sides, about 8 in. high and 4 in. wide; a lady's small dark brown sealskin bag, containing a Nor- wegian knife, maker, " Wliksted," on blade, a MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight, stoops slightly, hair and moustache dark ; dress, black felt hat and low shoes. The above inward will be paid by Major Chadwick, 3 Belgravc- crescent, Eccles, for the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves and recovery of the property. £ 1 Reward. 22.— OI dT rafford( County).— For stealing between 27th and 28th ult.. at Didsbury, a silver inkstand, about 11 in. long, 7 in, wide, and 6 in. high ; two cut glass bottles ( silver tops), taper stand in centre, hollow at bottom for pens. Presented to Richard Allen, Esq., in affectionate remembrance of his late patient and friend, Alice Simpson, engraved thereon — a MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft, 7 or 8 in., slight, com- plexion fair, hair dark, dress dark coat and trousers and black soft felt hat. The above reward w'll be paid by 11. Allen, Esq. Grange Lane, Didsbury, for the apprehension of the thief or thieves and recovery of the property. 23.— Old Trafford { County). — For stealing, 31st ult., at Crumpsall, 5 brooches ( 1 gold, nearly square, C. W. or C. W. W. thereon set grey- hair, 1 pearl, oval shape, twisted gold rim, 1 small square gold, hair in centre, 1 jet twisted pattern. 1 silver twisted pattern, pin deficient). 1 lady's gold pencil case, pistol shape, set 4 or 5 blue stones, one deficient; 3 rings ( 1 gold wedding, 1 gold double hoop with hair between, 1 pearl half hoop); 1 silver fruit knife, pearl handle; 1 silver- plated locket with photo of lady and gentleman ; 2 enamelled gold shirt studs; 1 smelling bottle with 2 silver tops.— Two MEN and a WOMAN, 1st, age 44. height 6ft. complexion fair, hair and whiskers ( slight) sandy; dress, dark clothes, soft felt hat, and side spring boots ( old). 2nd, age about 30, height 5ft. lin., complexion hair and whiskers dark, dress dark brown coat and trousers, and soft felt hat. 3rd, age about 38, height 5ft. com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, dress, shawl, and bon- net black. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. 24.— Liverpool, { City). — For embezzling, on the 12th ult., £ 33 14s. 2d., HENRY WOOLLEY, age about 20, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight hair red, moustache sandy. A clerk. Native of Sandbach, Cheshire. Warrant issued. £ 5 Reward. 25.-— Liverpool { City).— For stealing, 27tli ult., £ 240, ALEXANDER FORSYTH ANDERSON, may assume the name of ALEXANDER SMITH, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., square shoulders, complexion ruddy, haggard appearance, hair ( bald top of head), whiskers, and moustache dark sandy or brown, slight cast in both eyes, usually dressed in dark overcoat, brown suit, and felt hat, wears a large link pattern gold guard; late Master of the Brownlow Hill Workhouse ; supposed to have about £ 300 in his possession, and may endeavour to leave the country. It is requested that enquiries may be made at shipping offices and seaports. Native of Aberdeen. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by II. J. Ilagger, Esq., Clerk to the Select Vestry, Liverpool, for his apprehension. 26.— Liverpool { City).— For failing to report.— l icense holders MARY BRENT alias ROACH, Office No. 22506, age 61, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair sandy, eyes hazel, scars on forehead ( large), face, and left arm, lost top teeth. Sentenced at Liverpool the 13th August, 1873, to 15 years penal servitude for uttering. Licensed 27th August, 1883. Reg. No. Z 140. — JAMES BUTLER, Office No. 24260, age 40, height, 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, lloil mark right of neck, mole on right shoulder. Sentenced at Liverpool, 21st March, 1880 to five years penal ser- vitude for larceny ( person). Licensed 15tli March 1884. Reg. No. G 311.— WILLIAM NUSTON, Office No. 24311, age 39, height 5 ft. 8 in,, complexion dark, lost left arm, mole small of back. Sentenced at Liverpool the 9tli July, 1879, to 5 years penal servi- tude for larceny ( person). Licensed 13th March, 1884. Reg. No. F 600.— GEORGE WILSON, alias ATKINSON, Office No. 24044, age 32, height, 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark blown, eyes brown. Scars in right groin and end of left thumb. Sentenced at Liverpool the 24th April, 1878, to 7 years penal servitude for Housebreaking. Licensed 18tli January, 1884. Reg. This man is an expert " safe burglar, and usually operates by gaining access to adjoining premises and cutting through the walls. 2nd.— MICHAEL KURTZ, alias WERTSBERGER, GOODMAN, FOX, and SHEENEY MIKE, age. 35, height 5 ft. 3fin„ stout build, complexion, dark, hair and eyes black, straight nose, high cheekbones, ink dot on back, and mark on third finger, left hand.
