3 r- n POLICE CHE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1884. VOL. I., No. 10. REGULATIONS- 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON-, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of __ stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not Jess rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analagous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen properly to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, hi/ cheque, crossed '' Drummond <?• Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. £ 100 REWARD. 1.— K Division— WHEREAS between 9.45 a. m. and 1.30 p. m. on MONDAY, the 10th DECEMBER, 1883, MRS. ANNIE HANCOCK, was found dead at the foot of the stairs in the passage of No. 34, SUTHERLAND ROAD, BOW, having been stabbed in the neck, and a Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against some Person or Persons unknown. A Reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the Murderer or Murderers; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious P ARDO 1M to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. FACSIMILE OF LETTER. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2.— D Division,— For fraudulently obtaining, 11th January, 1882, £ 35, the property of Mr. Robert Attenborough, ALEXANDER C. WYLIE, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair, whiskers ( mutton chop) and moustache dark, slim build, broad shoulders, may be heard of at Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Weymouth, at which town he was presented with a silver cup, for contesting the second seat for that Borough, in the Liberal cause, in 1880. Warrant issued. 3.— D Division. — For fraudulently obtaining from Mr. Thomas Cobb, 1, Baker Street, Marylebone, London, one pair of breeches and gaiters, one lady's ulster, and £ 2 17s., bv means of a worthless cheque, FREDERICK II. DUNNETT, a traveller, late of 5, North Crescent, Tottenham Court Road, London, 4, Derby Villas, Upland Road, East Dulwich, London, and Merton Hall, South Devon, age 35, height 6 ft., broad shoulders, well built, complexion dark, hair, whiskers ( small), and moustache dark brown; dress; short drab overcoat, tight fitting trousers, and black billycock hat; appearance of a groom, addicted to drink. 4.— G Division.— For obtaining goods by fraud, a WOMAN, age 18, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion dark, hair black and curly, eyes brown, limps, and right toe turns in when walking ; dress, light check polonaise, dark skirt, cloth jacket, black straw hat turned up at sides, trimmed brown lace. 5.— G Division.— For obtaining, 17tli ult., by means of a fictitious cheque on the City Bank :— 7 dozen walnut blocks for brackets, 2 light penelants, 3 light chandeliers, 1 double elbow pendant, 1 hall lantern, coloured glass, 8 gas brackets ( 2 short), 1 treble gas bracket, 12 opal globes, 3 rose coloured ditto, 3 extra good for chandelier to suit aesthetic room, 26 ft. of j in. comp. piping, 3 ft. of y in. pipe ( 1 each J and £ brass connections), 3 ft. of 1 in. pipe ( 1 each 1 and £ brass connections), and a quantity of pieces and burners for all brackets and chandeliers, a MAN, age about 40, height 5ft., thick set, complexion sallow, hair and moustache ( heavy, turning grey) dark ; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. Had with him a dark brown pony, light trap, painted brown, picked out red. 6.— K Division.— For stealing, 25th ult., a pair of pink and gold lustres, drab and white flowers thereon; a black and gold teapot, wreath of dowers thereon, kettle to match; a cotton pillow case; 30 volumes books, various ( 10 Dickens' works)— STEPHEN GARRETT and WIFE: 1st, age 42, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and small moustache fair, hair brown, eyes ( discoloured from blows) blue; dress, black diagonal suit, hard felt hat, 2nd, age 29, height 5 ft. 1 in., fair, pale ; elrcss, black jacket, skirt, and bonnet; had with her a baby, 12 months old. Who took furnished lodgings and stole the articles named, 7.— K Division.— Description of AUGUSTE LINDON, wanted for conspiring with Fritz von Weisenburg ( in custody) and defrauding Heinrich Hutsch of £ 600, a German, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair sandy, eyes ( large) blue, head slightly inclined to the right; dress, black overcoat, brown cardigan jacket, dark trousers and vest, round felt hat. He left London 11th ult. ( supposed for Manchester), accompanied by his wife and two children. Has been in business as a baker at Battersea. May have gone to New York. A looking- glass frame maker. Warrant issued. 8.— N Division.—- For embezzlement, absconded about 29th November last, EDWARD KING, age 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair ( partly bald) and whiskers ( turning grey) brown, no moustache, shaved on chin ; dress ( generally), dark clothes. Warrant issued. 9.— P Division.— Escaped from custody, charged with felony, JOSEPH WILLIAMS alias JOE KNOTT, a pugilist, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, eyes grey, scar on bridge ot nose; dress, black diagonal suit, blue silk neckerchief, black bard felt hat, native of Birmingham. 10— R Division.— EMILY STEPHENSON ( see No. 179 in POLICE GAZETTE, 18th ult.). Further particulars. She is well known to Dr. Barr, Aldershot; her mother resides at No. 10, Union- street, Devonport; she is likely to be found in company of soldiers in garrison towns. 11.— T Division.,— For stealing, 29th ult., a set of harness ( nearly new, white metal mounts, initials " W. P." in double monogrun, with crown on top), snaffle, riding brid'e, two pairs clipping machires, and a pair brown leather driv ng reins, HENRY >' EATE, supervisee, Reg. No. 1324, Office No. 22130, 20, Bangor- street, Notting- dalc, age 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, oval features ; dress, brown coat, tight- fitting trousers ( or breeches and gaiters), low felt hat. HENRY MELLISH, 37, Queen's- road, Notting- dale, age 28, height 6 ft., com- plexion, hair and slight moustache dark, flat features, high cheek bones, round shouldered; dress, pepper mixture cloth suit, low felt hat. Gipsy appearance; native of Lewes- road, Brighton. CITY OF LONDON. 12.— For defrauding Assurance Company, LIONEL BATLEY, alias LIONEL JONES, JAMES LEWIS, Expiree, Reg. No. 14560, late of 7, Albion- road, Lewisham- road, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes L'rey, oval face, stout build, space between two front upper teeth, lost a lower tooth left side, three small sore marks back of left hand, one back of right hand, three burn marks on left leg, dimple on chin. Kept the " Goldsmith's Arms," Bartholomew Close, a short time ago. Known to Police at Woolwich and Greenwich. Warrant issued. 13.-— For fraudulent bankruptcy, MAURICE ABRAHAM HYMAN, aged 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., stoutish build, complexion pale, hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache dark brown, Jewish appearance; respectably dressed. Warrant issueel. 14.— For . embezzlement. WILLIAM LONGMORE, age 30. height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in . complexion pale, hair, moustache, and small side whiskers black; dress, brown overcoat, black frock coat; dark vest and trousers, black felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector MeWilliam, Detective Department, Old Jewry, London. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 15.— Wisbech { Borough).— On a charge of fraud, WILLIAM BALDREY, alias GEORGE PERKINS, a stone dresser, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fresh, moustache ( slight) and whiskers sandy, has last some teeth in front upper jaw; dress, coloured clothes, carries a satchel across his shoulder ; accom- panied by his wife and a little boy. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sharpe, Wisbech. DORSETSHIRE. 16.— Poole ( County).— Woodcut, portait and des cription of WILLIAM MARSHALL, charged with embezzling, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue ; dress ( when he left Poole), dark ribbed coat and vest, black bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Hunt, Poole, Dorset. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 17— St, Neots ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB AUGUST HAASE, alias HAUTCH, from Coeslin, Prussia, alias JUNO D'LEONORMADA, charged with stealing a pony, cart, and harness, at St. Neots, on 25tli March, 1882 ( not yet recovered), age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair ( thin) moustache and beard light ( if not shaved) walks erect, small scar right cheek and shin bone. Suffers from epilepsy. In the habit of wearing false hair and moustache, and occasionally dresses like a woman. Visits towns and villages, hires rooms and practises as a phrenologist, and sometimes as a fortune teller, and gives dancing lessons. Very clever at fancy wool- work, at which he is almost always employed. Has followed the occupation of cook or waiter. Has been twice married, and wives supposed still living, and very likely gone through the marriage ceremony with a third woman. Has been convicted in Germany, and about 3 01- 4- years ago was apprehended at King's Cross, London, for larceny, committed near Bacup. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Southport ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 4 2s. 6d. on 29th December last, JOHN HAWORTH, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair and whiskers brown, stout build; dress, dark over- coat, hard felt hat. Native of Southport. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable, Kershaw, Southport. LANARKSHIRE. 19.— Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 120, GEORGE SWORD TURNBULL, an accountant, about 35, height about 6 foot 1 inch, thin make, fair complexion, light yellowish moustache ( worn full and long), short mutton eliop whiskers, otherwise clean shaved, fair hair ( worn long and brushed well back from forehead),, high forehead, long sharp nose, large mouth, prominent cheek bones, thin features, lost first joint of one of his fingers ; usually dressed in brown Newmarket overcoat, dark under clothes, wears scarf- pin in shape of girl's boot, satin hat, which he wears a little to side ; nervous manner. Absconded on the afternoon of Tuesday last, 22nel ult., and it is supposed that he will endeavour to go abroad. Police officers are requested to have particular search anel inquiry made for accused at hotels, shipping offices,' and other likely places, and, if found, to arrest and wire. Warrant issued. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. £ 25 Reward. 20.— Mansfield ( County) — Woodcut portrait and description of SAMUEL DANKS, a bank clerk, wanted for stealing, 21st ult., at Mansfield, about £ 500, viz :—£ 20116s. 8d. in cash ( mostly sovereigns-), £ 290 in notes (£ 14 5 on various country banks, and £ 145 on Bank of England, nearly all small amounts, Nos. unknown), the moneys of his employers, the Nottingham and Notting- hamshire Banking Company, age 16, height about oft. 10m., spare build, complexion pale, thin lips, hair ( cut short) dark brown, head set short on shoulders, which appear high, has a slightly cynical expression when speaking, and is abrupt in his answers; left handed ( but uses right when writing); resided with his mother at Blue Bell- hill, Nottingham; can plav the piano and organ, and knows something of photo- graphy ; was m Ontario when a child; lias a brother lately gone to Canada or Manitoba ; may be found in some large or seaport town and endeavour to emigrate. - Native of Nottingham. £ 25 reward will be paid by the Directors of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Banking Company, Mansfield, for his apprehension. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tomasson, Mansfield. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1884. SOMERSETSHIRE. 21.— Weston, near Bath { County).— Absconded from Combe Down, 28th ult., charged with embezzling £ 2 16s., the moneys of his master, Mr. William Tozer. SAMUEL HARRIS, a baker, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair light, slight moustache, round full face, small hole in right cheek near ear; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest,; Havy blue trousers, black bowler hat, white muffler. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Morgan, Weston, near Bath. SUFFOLK. 22.— Boxford [ County).— For forging a cheque for £ 25 14s. on National Provincial Bank of England, on 29th December last, THOMAS SPAFFORD, alias BOOTH, age 28, height oft. 2 in. complexion light, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, stout build, slight ring worm on right jaw, very deaf, squeaks when laughing; dress, mixed dark tweed suit, dark hard felt hat, lace shooting boots. Supposed a weaver : native of Leeds. Warrant issued, Information to Supt. Chapman, Boxford, or Inspector Farthing, Long Meeford, Suffolk. WARWICKSHIRE. 23.— Atherstone ( County).— For stealing, 12thult., £ 6 17s. 8d., the moneys of his employers, the Glasgow Colliery Company, CHARLES GENDERS, a miner, age 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., slender build, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue or grey; dress, dark jacket, moleskin trousers, blue and white check shirt, : and clogs. Late of Glascote. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hannah, Warwickshire Constabulary, Atherstone. 24.— Birmingham ( Borough).— For fraudulently obtaining, 24th ult., the sum of £ 9 from Mr. Henry Mundav, undertaker, ONE MAN and TWO WOMEN :— The Man, age 35 to 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, moustache brown, no beard or whiskers ; dress, dark clothcs, brown overcoat, carries either a stick or umbrella. 1st Woman, age about 32, complexion rather dark, medium height; dress, dark clothes, long Newmarket ulster, black fall. 2nd Woman, age about 32, rather shorter than first Woman, complexion dark, medium build; dress, dark clothes. They represented that a relative had died, and that their uncle had sent a cheque for £ 25 to cover the funeral expenses. They gave the order for burial to cost £ 16, receiving £ 9 from Mr. Munday, as balance. The cheque which was on the City Bank, Limited, London, is a forgery, the cheque- book having been stolen from a customer. There are similar charges against these persons here. Please caution undertakers, as it as been ascertained that these persons are visiting various towns. If found, apprehend, and wire information to Chief Constable Farndale, Birmingham. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING;. 25.— Wakefield { County).— For stealing from a dwelling house at Normanton, 24th ult., a silver lever watch, silver gilt dial, numerals, sunk seconds, supposed steel hands, No. 77431 ( had piece of string attached) ; a man's blue pilot overcoat, double- breasted, two rows of black bone buttons on front ( one off left side), ticket pocle: right side, one left breast, lined dark material, braided all round, slit in sewing behind collar; a dark diagonal cloth coat or jacket, single- breasted and braided, two pockets on hips, one inside left breast, and 4s. 6d. in silver, WILLIAM MULLINS, age 15. height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short), light brown, eyes grey ( cut mark over left), large mouth, very prominent upper lip, and speaks with a drawling manner, teeth closed ; dress, stolen coat, yellowish tweed trousers, velvet cap with peak same material ( large tassel on top) red, white and blue striped muffler, clogs much too large, which lie may exchange for shoes. May be found under the seats of railway carriages. Police Officers are requested to notify this fact at railway stations, more particularly at those where tickets are collected. West Riding- Office, Wakefield. 26.— Saddleworth { County). — For embezzling £ 150 6s., WILLIAM PARK, or PARKS, a farm bailiff, age 40, height 6 feet, complexion pale, hair light brown, thin on scalp, long straggling whiskers, light coloured and of a yellowish tinge, from the centre of chin are a lighter colour than the rest, moustache lighter than whiskers, features long and thinner than shewn in the photograph, and wrinkled from the nose to beneath the chin; dress, pepper and salt coloured tweed coat and trousers ( too short), imita- tion sealskin vest, lace. boots, soft billycock hat. Native of Nooksteer, near Burton and Holmes, West- moreland. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stott, West Riding Con- stabulary, Saddleworth. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. PERSONS IN CUSTODY". C., butcher, age 36, height 5 ft. 8.] in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, slight beard and moustache ; dress, black diagonal overcoat, black diagonal do. under, and vest, blue check trousers, sidespring boots, Oxford shirt, hard felt hat ( all old and dirty); SAMUEL WILSON, address refused, dealer in jewellery, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache fair, eyes blue; dress, 2 suits of clothes ( 1st, brown cloth overcoat, pockets on hips, blue diagonal frock coat and vest, blue check trousers ; 2nd, black diagonal cut- away coat and vest, brown check trousers), lace boots, hard felt hat, blue and red muffler. 29.— G Division,— Remanded at Clerkenwell till2 p. m., 7th inst., JAMES GOODWIN, alias ANDERSON, BUCIvSTONE, and FARRINGTON, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., slim build, complexion and hair fair, eyes hazel, thin chin ; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, mixture tweed trousers, high black hat, " masher" collar, lace boots; for obtaining- by fraud through The Exchange and, Mart paper, 4 revolvers, 1 violin ( in case), 2 razors, 1 malacca cane, 1 silver watch, and a pawnbroker's duplicate for watch not identified. 30.— H Division.— Remanded at Thames Police Court till 11 a. m. 4th inst.. suspected persons— WILLIAM HATFIELD, 11, Samuel- street, St. George's East, a labourer, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes blue, large blue scar on right temple, W. A., and star ( red and blue) on right forearm, anchor and 10 dots left do., bracelet left wrist: dress, green diagonal coat, black do. trousers and vest, skull cap, lace boots; MICHAEL DANHER, 21, Romford street, Mile- end Old- town, age 16, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes blue, 2 blue dots right forearm: dress, brown tweed coat, dark vest, cord trousers, skull cap, lace boots. Hatfield supposed previously convicted, and both wanted for petty larcenies. 31.— M Division.— Remanded at Greenwich Police Court till 11 a. m. 4th inst., for stealing a silver chain ( not recovered) from a jeweller's shop — GEORGE ANDERSON, a labourer ( false address), age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., fair, hair light brown, beard about a week's growth : dress, blue pilot coat velvet collar), black cloth striped vest and trousers, black soft tweed hat, lace boots. Native of Ratcliff- highway.
