All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZSITTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR or THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons to hose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient, to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. •'!. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to he thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly staled. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is Sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of Is. Cd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on toood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent: and, if the name of such person be required to be • inserted, an I no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the ch ief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, us the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of alt persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, re ferring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. That must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. MVRD ot^ 1 IR, IE " W ZEt ID _ 72.— N Division WHEREAS between 1 and 8 a. m. on Tuesday, the 1st of January, 1884, John Broome Tower, was murdered, and his body subsequently found in the New River Company's Reser- voir, Lordship Road, Stoke Newington, and a verdict of Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown has been returned by a Coroner's Jury. A Reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer, or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious I3 EDO IN" to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. There was stolen from the body a silver Opiate horizontal Geneva hunting watch, common Swiss make, No. 12871, and a gold plated double albert ( the bar of which has been found on a piece of waste ground adjoining Queen Elizabeth's Walk), with metal sovereign purse at end. WHEREAS, about 4 p. m. on Tuesday, December 18th, 1883, William Henry Day was wilfully stabbed several times in the stomach, in a shed in the rear of a house in Portland Street, Walworth, by a man of the following description, who made his escape at the time; age about 27, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, moustache and whiskers cut short, dark; dress, dark ribbed overcoat, dark trousers, black felt hat. AND WHEREAS the said William Henry Day has since died from the effects of the wounds, and a Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against some person unknown. Wanted for being concerned with William Wolff and Edward Bondurand ( in custody) for possessing an ex- plosive substance for an unlawful purpose. W., who will pay the above reward for his apprehension. 75.— E Division,— For obtaining money by means of a false cheque on National Bank, Belgravia Branch, FREDERICK HUDDLESTONE, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very dark, heavy black mous- tache, long straight nose ; dress, black frock coat, high silk hat, a MAN, age 30, high oft. 9 in., complexion ruddy, heavy sandy moustache,; dress, dark clothes, high silk bat. Warrant issued. 76.— E Division,— For obtaining goods by ficti- tious cheque on London and County Bank, Covent Garden Branch, FRANK MORSE STEPHENS, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., thin build, complexion and hair fair, blotched face, no whiskers or moustache ; dress, light dust overcoat, dark under clothes, high hat; gentlemanly appearance. Has friends residing at 63, Montague- square, and 12, Weymouth- street, Portland- place. Warrant issued. 77—. E Division.— Forstealing, 6th, a black leather purse, containing one single stone diamond ring, one marked lot., set with three rubies and two diamonds, a gold scarf ring, set with large carbuncle ( cracked), representing a tortoise with diamond sparks in head and feet, one opal pin, plain setting, coral pin, gold snake round top ( pin broken), three sovereigns and 10s. in silver, HENRY SHEPHERD, alias BONNY JOAN, a singer and guitar player, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, eyes and moustache dark, slightlv pockmarked, generally wears leather bracelets; dress, drab coat ( raised seams), grey tweed trousers and vest, low hat and light shoes. 78.— E Division.— For stealing, 31st'ult., a £ 5 Bank of England note, two men who gave the names of ALBERT and LIONEL MARTELL: 1st, age 28 height 9 in.', complexion, hair, and moustache black ; dress, grey suit, long black overcoat ( trimmed with fur and braid), high hat— 2nd, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion and hair fair, lighc moustache ; dress, long black overcoat, grey suit, hard felt hat. Both gentlemanly appearance. 79.— G Division.— For neglecting to maintain family, MICHAEL SULLIVAN, a labourer, age 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair auburn, eyes hazel, small moustache"; dress, white jacket, light vest, corduroy trousers, hard felt hat. Was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment at Guildhall for assaulting his wife, 18th October, 1883. Warrant issued. 80.— H Division,— For stealing, 5th, a black marble 16- day clock, French make, strikes hours and half hours ; a gentleman's gold Geneva lever open face watoh, gold dial: gold snake pattern albert chain, gold seal:, cornelian stone " R. A." engraved thereon, and gold watch key attached, a gold scarf pin, set of gold studs and solitaires to match, a japanned tin cash box, containing £ 4 gold and silver, two life policies in the Prudential Assurance Company, in the name of " Robert and Harriet Allert," and memoranda, five bone handle knives: one carving, three table, one small; four nickel silver foiks : two large, two small; six spoons : two large, two tea, initials " R. M. A.," two egg, initials " R. H. A."; one white Marcella counter- pane, one pair calico sheets, one red and black table cover a MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache fair, shaved on chin; dress, brown overcoat, ditto under, dark check trousers, high black silk hat, a WOMAN, age 24, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark brown, full face : dress, blue serge, dark brown ulster, black turban hat Had with them a brown leather portmanteau. 81.— K Division— For stealing between 21st August, and the 20th December, 1 » 83, three shirts ( one white linen, two Oxford, marked " B. Steors" on front), one pair black striped trousers, one gold case Geneva watch. No. 17851, marked inside case No. 12192, jewelled in eight holes, and a double link gold albert chain, gold slide attached, with a dark red stone and four white pearls, GEORGE ROBINSON, sea- man, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, slight whiskers and moustache ; dressed as a steward on board ship ; right foot injured, walks lame ; may be found near Surrey Commercial Dock in company with prostitutes. His home near Hampton Court. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1884. A footman. 83.— W Division.— For stealing, 3rd inst., a silver verge open- face watch, long German silver neck chain attached, EDMUND VANDERT BERGHE, a Belgian, age 29, height 6 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskers, and moustache black; dress, long brown cloth overcoat, black cloth suit under ( shabby), black soft felt hat, oxonian shoes. 84.— Y Division.— For stealing 50,000 cubic feet of gas, WILLIAM POTTINGER, alias DOLLAR, 1, Clarendon- villas, Mulkern- road, Upper Holloway, an engineer, age 40, height, complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark; dress, dark clothes, hard feltliat; stoops when walking. CITY OF LONDON, 85.— For stabbing, ALFRED DARCY, age 18, height 5ft., complexion and hair dark, no whiskers or moustache, cast in one eye, small feet, peculiar walk; dress, black clothes, side spring boots, black felt hat. Warrant issued. 86.— For stealing, 3rd inst., 2 gold albert chains, round link pattern, a gold locket, " ILL." engraved thereon, containing portraits of man and woman : a small metal compass ; a pair of light tweed trousers, in pockets two gold finger rings ( one pink stone, " H. L." thereon; one plain small bloodstone, twisted gold round setting); a gold Geneva watch, gold face, maker " A. Goad, 14, High- street, Islington," on inside case; a George III. 1820 gilt shilling; a round gold scarf pin, red stone, diamond set in centre, HERMANN CONRAD, a German ( cannot speak English), late of 3, Princes- square, St. George's, East, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and htiir dark, clean face ; dress, dark jacket, light trousers, and soft black felt hat. 87.— For embezzlement, ALFRED EDNEY, 1, Arundel Villas, Mayes- road, Wood Green, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair black, whiskers and moustache small, stoops when walking; dressed in tweed suit, FRANCIS WARD BLOWER, a clerk, aged 17, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, liair dark brown, eyes hazel, slim build; dressed respectably, residing with his father at Pembridge Villas. East Acton- lane, Middlesex:— WILLIAM E. WATSON, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion florid, hair ( cut short) brown, moustache fair; generally dressed in blue yachting or sandy brown suit, cutaway coat and billycock lint. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, Old Jewry, London, E. C. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 88.— Cambridge { Borough).— For embezzlement, GEORGE JAMES, tramcar manager, ago about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair ( short, frizzy) moustache dark brown, no whiskers or beard, eyes dark blue, oval face, thin build, tattooed, and very much ruptured. Dress, dark blue overcoat, black ribbed under ditto, light mixture trousers, side- spring boots, black hard felt hat. Has been a sailor and ticket inspector on North Metropolitan Tramway. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Turrall, Cambridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 89 — Carnarvon { County).— For fraud, WILLIAM JONES, alias WILLIAM LLANRHUG, age 54, lieig' ht 5 ft. 9 in., beard and moustache ( turning « rey) dark, complexion swarthy, downcast looks, round shoulders, slightly lame right leg ; dress, black cloth coat, brown trousers, dark vest, muffler, and small round felt hat. Information to the Chief Constable, Carnarvon. DERBYSHIRE. 90.— Woodville { County).— For stealing from a dwelling house at Swadlincote, 8th ult., a silver verge watch, plain case, dent on outside case, letters " W. C." inside, second hands, white dial, glass cracked, brass albert chain, long twisted links, and small imitation mariner's compass attached. A man, age about 21, heiff ht 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, hair and moustache slight, dark, no whiskers, eyes dark, sear on fourth finger of cne hand ; dress, dark pilot jacket, dark ribbed cloth trousers and vest, black hard felt hat, old elastic- side boots, worn down outside heels, supposed to be wearing a black and white plaid woollen muffler, also stolen. Information to Supt. 11. S. Sims. Woodville, Burton- on- Trent. DENBIGH SHIRE. 91.— Wrexham { County). — For embezzlement, JOHN DUNSTON, a clerk,' age 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion and hair fair, whiskers, and moustache slight, chin shaved, slightly pockmarked bloated appearance, as if from heavy drinking; dress, grey overcoat, lace boots, felt hat: native of Oakham, Rutlandshire, and has relatives at Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham. DORSETSHIRE, 92.— At Sherborne { County).— For stealing on the 15th ult., £ 5 in silver:— LUTHER GOSNEY, a labourer, age 17, height 5ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, slight build, mark of burn over right eye ; dress, dark clothes and hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Mr. Supt. Florance, Sherborne. ESSEX, 93.— Dun mow { County).— For housebreaking at Broxted 10th ult., HENRY DAVIDSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, slight moustache, " T. II. T. D.", heart and cross on right forearm ; states he has been a trimmer on board the steam ship Consent, of South Shields, Captain Smith— JOHN GAMLYN, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey ; states he worked for Messrs. Saunders, Bros., van pro- prietors, of No. 3, Ilampstead- street, Fitzroy- square, as a porter, about 12 months ago. Information to Supt. Ackers, Constabulary Office, Dunmow. 94.— Southend- on- Sea { County).— For stealing, on 11th ult., an overcoat and seven shillings, CHARLES EDGAR, a photographer, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, moustache ginger, no whiskers, large broad nose, has served in the army, walks erect, but carries his head a little forward : dress, long blue pilot overcoat, tweed suit, single- breasted Oxford coat and vest, black Pall Mall felt hat, and white muffler, all new. FLINTSHIRE. 95.— Holywell { County).— For larceny, BENJA- MIN TAYLOR, age 28 or 30, height 5 ft.' lO in., com- exion pale, hair brown, pockmarked, high cheek bones, small dark whiskers, stoops at the shoulders, spare build ; dress, soft billycock hat, old long brown top coat, tight- fitting cord trousers, and strong lace- up boots, travels with an old black horse and covered spring cart. HERTFORD. 96.— Hemel Hempstead { County).— For assault" ing a constable'with a glass bottle, JAMES ALLEN> alias DOCTOR ALLEN, age 23, looks older, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) dark brown, usually clean shaved, sometimes allows his beard to grow for two or three weeks ; dress, corduroy trousers, rough slop, lace boots, sometimes wears an overcoat, all old and dirty; native of Bovingdon, Herts. HERTFORDSHIRE. 97.— Hertford { Borough).— For stealing, 24th ulto., 4s. 6d. from a box in the Catholic Church, Hertford, CHARLES DIAMOND, age about 14, height 4 ft. 10 in. to 5 ft. Complexion fair, hair ( cut short) dark brown, eyes dark, stout built; dress dark, tweed, hard felt hat, carried a red cane. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Hertford. KENT. 98.— Mailing { County).— For stealing 24th ult., at Hunton, Kent, eight fowls, one sheep, and two sacks ( recovered), WALTER KEMP, age about 36, height 5 ft 6 or 7 in,, complexion fair, hair brown; dress, pepper and salt tweed coat, dark cloth vest, cord trousers, Iacc boots, plaid scarf, brown hard felt hat; a gardener; native of Ewell, Surrey; may be found at fruit- growers, kc. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hulsc, Police Station, West Mailing, Kent. 99.— Tunbridge Wells { Borough).— For obtain- ing four gold wedding rings by false pretences on 9th Nov. last, WALTER STILL, a journeyman butcher, age 22, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and moustache fair, hair brown, piercing eyes: parents keep a butcher's shop at Smart's Hill, Penshurst, Kent, of which place be is a native. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Embery, Town Ilall, Tun- bridge Wells. 100.— Tunbridge Wei Is { Borough).— For obtaining money bygiving worthless cheques on the Acton Branch of the London and South- Western Bank. BERNARD HELDMAN, alias CAPTAIN ROBERTS, and DR. WILSON, a journalist, formerly of Acton, aire 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, no whiskers; dress, brown mixture suit, Scotch check tweed ulster, no band, soft brown liat; wears an eye- glass and plain link gold albert chain; has a bad cough, and speaks very loud and quickly : talks of having been to India and about Paris and Nice. Warrant issued. 101.— T unbridgeWel Is ^ Borough),— For stealing, 21stult., a 42- in. Flying Dutchman Tricycle, rear steerer, square Feat, blue cloth cushions, plated rail, plated brake, with vertical sliding movement, worked with handle on left, painted navy blue, about four inches broken off splash guard at back, and one spoke broken inside driving- wheel. THOMAS HOLDER, alias JAMES McMILLAN native of Newhaven. Sussex, age, 30, height 5ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, full round face, hair dark brown, whiskers and heavy moustache, apparently deaf, head droops ; dress, black cutaway coat, check tweed trousers ( worn at bottoms), Scotch cap ; who hired the tricycle for one day and absconded with it. Stated he was traveller for Strickland and Co., corn factors, Hailsham ( false). Was convicted at Lewes, 10th July last, and at Hastings in April last, in name of MINION DAVIS, for same offence. Sometimes passes in the name of JAMES WALKER. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable, Police Station, Tunbridgc Wells. LANCASHIRE, 102.— Pemberton { County).— For stealing from a pit brow at Ince, 4th inst., a dark worsted coat, pockets each side, one inside left breast, one inside right breast, and ticket pocket:— a MAN, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown : dress, blue knitted slop, dark trousers, elastic side boots, sailor's cap " White Star Line " in gilt letters on front. Information to Supt. Weir, County Police Office, Peniberton. 103.— Manchester ( City).— For embezzlement, ARTHUR HENRY LARKAM, age 34, height 5ft. loin., complexion sallow, hair very dark ( cut short), beard ( full), whiskers and moustache black, eyes dark ( slight squint in left), wears gold spectacles, long nose, square shoulders, tender feet; dress, generally wears a silk hat with very flat brim. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. 104.— Liverpool ( City).— For having feloniously- received a £ 50 Bank of England note, stolen bva woman ( in custody) and recovered, PERCIVAL" EATON A. IKINS, a licensed victualler, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, thin features, thick nose, hair brown, moustache ( slight), dark, no whiskers, slender build; dress, long black overcoat, hard billycock liat. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Superintendent Williams, Detective Department, Liverpool. 105.— Rochdale { Borough).— For stealing the 20tli ult. a bay horse, aged, 15 hands 3 inches, light bay legs, dinge in one of the fore hoofs ; set of plated harness, and a lady's gold lever watch, No. 87135, engine- turned case, inner case brass, compensation balance. A man, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache very light, no whiskers ; dress, black hard felt hat, light- coloured close- fitting jacket, light mixture vest, and, light tweed trousers, with grey and black stripe, elastic- side boots, block fronts, cloth- ing and boots much worn; stated he was a native of Reading, Berks, and traveller for Fairbent, Bros, and Co., tea merchants, Leicester. Information to Jos. Wilkinson, Chief Constable, Rochdale.
