All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to TIIE EDITOII OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GIIEAT SCOTLAND YAUD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient, to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as 10 stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, an I the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, wilt be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15.?. per portrait, and of Is. tid. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result ftorn such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue'should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. The>/ must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the ofiice, Great Scotland Yard., by cheque, crossed " Drummond Co.,'' Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. P Division. 7.:— WIIBKKAS, about 4 p. m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18th, 1883, William Henry Day was wilfully stabbed several times in the stomach, in a shed in the rear of a house in Portland- street, Walworth, by a man of the following description, who made his escape at the time; age about 27, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, moustache and whiskers cut short, dark ; dress, dark ribbed overcoat, dark trousers, black felt hat. And whereas the said William Henry Day has since died from the effects of the wounds, and a Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against some person unknown. A Reward of £ 100 will be paid 1 y Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person be- longing to a Police Force in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to. the discovery and conviction or' the murderer, and the Secretary of Stato for'the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious PARDON to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. DERBYSHIRE. 10.— Woodville.— For stealing jj from a dwelling house at Swadlincote, 8th ult., a silver verge watch, plain case, dent on outside case, letters " W. C." inside, seconds hand, white dial, " lass cracked, brass albert chain, long twisted links, and small imitation mariner's compass attached. A man, age about 21, height oft. 6 in., stout build, hair and moustache slight, dark, no whiskers, eyes dark, scar on fourth finger of one hand; dress, dark'pilot jacket, dark ribbed cloth trousers and vest, black hard felt hat, old elastic- side boots, worn down outside heels, supposed to be wearing a black and white plaid woollen muffler, also stolen. D.", heart and cross on " right, forearm : states he has been a trimmer on board the steam ship Consent, of South Shields, Captain Smith.— JOHN GAMLYN, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey ; states he worked for Messrs. Saunders, Bros., van pro- prietors, of No. 3, Hampstead- street, Fitzroy- square, as a porter, about 12 months ago. Information to Supt. Ackers, Constabulary Office, Dunmow. 13.— Southend- on- Sea.— For stealing, on 11th ult., an overcoat and seven^ shillings, CHARLES EDGAR, a photographer, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, moustache ginger, no whiskers, large broad nose, has served in the army, • walks erect, but carries his head a little forward : dress, long blue pilot. overcoat, tweed suit. single- breasted Oxford coat and vest, black Pall Mall felt hat, and white muffler, all new. FLINTSHIRE. 14.— Holywell. — For larceny, BENJAMIN TAYLOR, age 28 or 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair brown, pockmarked, high cheek bones, small dark whiskers, stoops at the shoulders, spare build; dress, soft billycock hat, old long brown top coat, tight fitting cord trousers, and strong lace- up boots, travels • with an old black horse and covered spring cart. I s.— For obtaining money by giving worthless cheques on the Acton Branch of the London and South- Western Bank, BERNARD HELDMAN, alias CAPTAIN ROBERTS, and DR. WILSON, a journalist, formerly of Acton, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 0 in., complexion fair, hair brown, no whiskers; dress, brown mixture suit, Scotch check tweed ulster, no band, soft brown hat; wears an eye- glass and plain link gold albert chain; has a bad cough, and speaks very loud and quickly: talks of having been to India and about Paris and Nice. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable, Police Station, Tunbridge Wells. 16.— Tunbridge Wells,— For stealing, 21st ult., a42- in. Flying Dutchman Tricycle, rear steerer, square seat, blue cloth cushions, plated rail, plated brake, with vertical sliding movement, worked with handle on left, painted navy blue, about four inches broken off splash guard at back, and one spoke broken inside driving- wheel. THOMAS HOLDER, alias JAMES McMILLAN native of Newliaven, Sussex, age, 30, height 5ft. 8 or 0 in., complexion dark, full round face, hair dark brown, whiskers and heavy moustache, apparently deaf, head droops; dress, black cutaway coat, cheek tweed trousers ( worn at. bottoms), Scotch cap ; who hired the tricycle for one day and absconded with it. * Stated he was traveller for Strickland and Co., corn factors, Ilailsham ( false). Was convicted at Lewes, lOtli July last, and at Hastings in April last, in name of MINION DAVIS, for same offence. Sometimes passes in the name of JAMES WALKER. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Superintendent Williams, Detective Department, Liverpool. 18 — Rochdale,— For stealing the 20tli ult. a bay horse, aged, 15 hands 3 inches, light bay legs, dinge in one of the fore hoofs; set of plated harness, and a lady's gold lever watch, No. 87135, engine- turned case, inner case brass, compensation balance. A man, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache very light, no whiskers ; dress, black hard felt hat, light- coloured close- fitting jacket, light mixture vest, and light tweed trousers, with grey and black stripe, elastic- side boots, block fronts, cloth- ing and boots much worn; stated he was a native of Reading, Berks, and traveller for Fail- bent, Bros, and Co., tea merchants, Leicester. Information to Jos. Wilkinson, Chief Constable, Rochdale. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 19.— For stealing, 21st ult., at. Abergavenny, some rabbit and hair skins, WILLIAM BROWN, aged 32, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, sandy moustache, small whiskers ; dress, blue monkey jacket, cord or moleskin vest and trousers, black soft billy- cock hat: upright bearing, has been a corporal in Monmouthshire Militia; is a notorious poacher ; likely to be found on public works. NORFOLK. 20.— Kings Lynn.— For uttering a forged Bill of Acceptance for £ 5, JAMES STEWART, alias JAMES STEWART ROBSON, stout build, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion florid, hair, whiskers and moustache brown, chin shaved; wears spectacles; dress, black frock coat, dark trousers, silk hat; very gentlemanly address ; a professional singer, native of Liverpool, where he states he was in business as a shipowner. Accompanied by his wife, a small, thin sickly- looking person, and one child; she generally appears in a shabby, light- coloured ulster. He advertises himself as an accountant; obtains introduc- tions to Church Choirs. Was last heard of atj'the Cambrian Boarding House, East India- road, London. Was sentenced to six months at the Norfolk Assizes, in 1880, for similar offence. Warrant issued. Information to G. Ware, Head Constable, Kings Lynn. OXFORDSHIRE. 21.— Thame.— For obtaining bv fraud on the 9th ult., £ 115 5s. lid., THOMAS WEBSTER, a solici tor's clerk, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and whiskers light brown, heavy moustache, stout build; dress, black cloth suit, black felt hat. RADNORSHIRE, 22.-— Bo ugh rood.— For stealing a sack and a ferret, and assaulting Police, HENRY WARNER, age 62, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, eyes hazel, clean shaved, hair on tip of nose, tattooed from wrist to elbow on both arms: dress, old velvet coat, elotli waistcoat, cord trousers, cap with peak, of very drunken habits; fre- quents low lodging- houses. LANCASHIRE. 17.— Liverpool.— For having feloniously received a £ 50 Bank of England note, stolen by a woman ( in custody) and recovered, PERC1VAL EATON AlKINS, 23.— Wednesbury.— For assault with intent to ravish and abuse a child at Dudley Port, on 8th ult HENRY HUGHES, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion sallow, hair and moustache black, slender build ; a labourer, military appearance, has served in the Grenadier Guards, and is now in the Army Reserve ; dress, black tweed jacket and vest, light striped trousers, hard billycock hat, and elastic- side boots; is fond of singing at public- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Holland, Wednes- bury, or to Inspector Gasson, Tipton. 24.— Stoke- on- Trent.— For Shopbreaking, 9th ult., SAMUEL BATH, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in. complexion fresh, liair brown, light coloured moustache, blue cut mark on nose, rough dirty ap- pearance, a collier, and associates with"" prostitute's, supposed known in Derbyshire; dress, black cloth jacket, pockets on hips, light grey trousers, black hard hat, or double peak cap, lace- up boots. Information to Supt. Hackney, Stoke- on- Trent. WARWICKSHIRE. 25— Leamington.— For forgery, WILLIAM LEE, alias HENRY OSBORNE, age 50 ; height, 5 ft in,; complexion dark, hair brown, eyes hazeh oval face, Roman nose ( scar on bridge right side), scar below elbow on side left arm, mole top of left shoulder, birthmark above buttock, Convicted at Manchester, on March 6th, 1869, for conspiracy, and sentenced to two years hard labour: and on August 8th, 1878,. for obtaining goods by false pretences, and sentenced to five years- penal servitude ; discharged from Portland Prison on license, December 15th, 1882. Information to the Chief Constable, Police Station,, Leamington. 26.— Birmingham,— For stealing, 21st ult., agold watch, gold dial, 18 carat, No. 97760 ; a silver English lever, No. 19794; a silver English lever, No. 42143, engine- turned cases ; a silver English lever, small size, No. 20649 ; a silver English lever, No. 19210: a silver English lever, No. 30364; a silver English lever, crystal glass, No. 5718 ; a silver English lever, large size, No. 22629; a lady's silver Geneva, No. 4183; a lady's silver Geneva, 4631; an aluminium key- less watch, and nine pier glasses.' eleptic pattern JACOB SILBERT, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in.', complexion, hair, and moustache dark, no whiskers; dress light small check suit, billycock hat. A Jew, late of Dalton and Darley Streets, Liverpool, and recently obtained a pedlar's certificate from Newport, Mon- mouthshire. A traveller for Myer Thomas, watch- maker, & c., 286, Broad- street, Birmingham. Warrant issued. For embezzling £ 3 8s., 10th ult, THOMAS MOORE, errand boy, age 16, medium height and build, thin features, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes dark; dress, brown moleskin trousers, snuff- coloured jacket, billycock hat; well known at Chester, where he has been in custody for felony. Warrant issued. Information to J. Farndale, Chief Constable, Birmingham. WILTSHIRE. 27.— Malmesbury.— For threatening to murder a publican at Oaksey, on the night of 25th ult., WALTER BAKER, a stone cutter, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion light, bald; dress, brown coat, billycock hat, shoes, all old; plays a tin whistle and frequents tap- rooms and public- houses; native of Oaksey, but has been living in Birmingham, where his wife and family reside. He is also wanted for wilfully damag- ing a number of tombstones at Oaksey oil the above date. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Luffman, Policc Station, Malmesbury. WORCESTERSHIRE. 2 « .— Stourbridge.— For stealing, 19th ult., ajarge gold horse- shoe scarf pin, set with 5 large diamonds, and a line of small diamonds connecting the large ones, one small diamond missing, value 17 guineas; a large gold pearl scarf pin, mounted to resemble a beetle, a large pearl forming the bellv of the beetle, and the body set with small diamonds, one diamond missing; also a gold scarf pin, resembling a hand, holding a diamond between the thumb and forefinger: — A man aged about 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in.; com- plexion fresh, hair brown, sharp features, clean shaved ; dress, round jacket, tight- fitting trousers, and black hard felt hat, wore rough woollen gloves with magenta- coloured cuffs, and carried a knotted walking- stick; has a habit of snapping his fingers frequently while conversing, and has the appearance of a groom or jockey. YORKSHIRE, ( EAST RIDING). £ 100 EBWABD. 29— - Kingston- upon- Hull.— For stealing, about leb. 20, 1882, a Bill of Exchange for £ 420, and other valuable property, PETER EMIL WEEKE, age 4o ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., pointed features, hair very thin, whiskers, beard ( longer than m the sketch) and moustache, all turning grey, sight very near and weak, generally wears spec TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1884. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 30— Sheffield.— For stealing 5th ult. about £ 15, IIICHAIID BROOKS, a cashier, age about 24, height • 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to sandy) and moustache light, medium build, stoops slightly when walking ; dress, dark grey suit, and round hard hat; was for some time a seaman on board a sailing vessel trading between Liverpool and America. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT, 31.— E Division,— Remanded at Bow- street till noon 8th ( on bail), for the unlawful possession of a lady's gold keyless Geneva watch, No, 24,850, crest, a stag with thistle in its mouth and both fore feet up- lifted, shield' with three running stags thereon, and motto " Cum Magnis Vixesse" engraved on back, gold and black ribbon fob chain, gold triangular shape pendant, " C. C. C. Searle and Son, Stonehouse, Plymouth," No. 44505, sunk minute hands, a gold graduated link chain, 9 carat, with pendant attached, 10 carat, containing a stone, white one side and green the other; a snake pattern half- mourning gold ring, chased, and containing nine opals, two of which are chipped; a man's size black ribbed monkey jacket nearly new, three pockets outside, including a ticket pocket, breast pocket inside, velvet collar, loop marked " Excelsior," lined black rough material, diamond pattern; a boy's monkey jacket, nearly new, same make and material, but without ticket pocket; a man's new brown ribbed cloth overcoat, four pockets outside, including breast and ticket pockets, and one inside, lining taken out; a man's new summer dark mixture overcoat, three pockets outside, including ticket pocket, lined black.
