T1IE Police Gazette OR Published for Ireland on every Tuesday and Friday. All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover addressed to the Inspector- General of Constabulary, authenticated by a Separata Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this Information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. DUBLIN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. £ 100 REWARD. WILFUL MURDER. WHEREAS, at 5 40 AM. on Thursday, the 4th instant, the dead body of Jonas Bottomley, confectioner, Keighley, was found lying, face downwards, on the canal side, near Monk Bridge Forge, in this borough, and on medical examination, there were found a large wound on the forehead and another on the back of the head. There was missing from his vest pocket ( supposed stolen) a medium° sized gold Geneva watch, silver gilt dial much worn, and flowered back also much worn. An inquest was held on the 18th instant, and a verdict of wilful murder returned against some person or persons unknown. Notice is hereby given that the above reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a porson belonging to a Police force in the United Kingdom) who shall give siich infor- mation and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer ot murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the . grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. WANTED for the murder of John Dukes, in Hill- street, Birmingham, on the night of the 5th August, 1883, Martin M'Gann and William Ryan :— ^ Description of Martin M'Gann—- About 21 years • of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, hair brown, com- plexion fair, slightly freckled, proportionate build; cut scar on left cheek ; walks erect; speaks slowly, with an Irish accent. Dressed in a dark coat, brown browsers, and silk handkerchief round his neck. Trade, wood button turner. 2. Description of William Ryan— Age 19, height 5 feet 6 or 7 inches, hair dark, complexion sallow, thin build. Dressed, when last seen, in a dark cuta- way coat and black greasy trowsers. Trade, a brass caster. The above- named men absconded from Birming- ham on tho 25th August last, both having lived in " Grosvenor- street, Ladywood, Birmingham, and are well known in Essington- street, Birmingham, where • they formerly resided. A verdict of wilful murder against M'Gann and iRyan was returned by the Coroner's Jury at the in- quest, held at Birmingham on the 13th September instant, and the Coroner has issued his Warrants for their apprehension. LICENCE- HOLDER, A 122, Samuel Anderson, alias John Hennessy or Murphy:— A painter, native of Maryboro,' 76 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, medium build, gray hair, gray eyes, sallow complexion, oval features, lost nearly all his teeth, convicted at Omagli, county Tyrone, 13th October, 1879, of larceny and nrevious conviction, and was sentenced to 5 years r ' servitude; liberated from H. M. Convict Prison, Mountjoy, 12th ultimo. On the 13tb ultimo he reported himself at Liverpool, and stated he was going to Manchester, but has not reported himself there, and his present whereabouts is unknown. ABSCONDED from this city, on the 16th instant, stealing £ 831 Is. id., and against whom Warrants have been granted, John Banks, a Catholic priest:— He is 37 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, round features, fair, hair and complexion, slightly sallow under the eyes, clean shaved, may discard his clerical attire; he was accompanied by a female named Catherine Hammill, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair, fringe on forehead, dark complexion, round features, rather good looking; dressed at the time of their departure in a black velveteen dress, jacket same material, a black chip hat, boat shape, with black feather, and trimmed with black satin ; carried a fur cape and a brown silk umbrella. Their luggage consisted of two portmanteaus, one paper- covered trunk, two leather bags, and a man's hat box. They sailed from Folkestone at 11.30 A. M., 18th instant, for Boulogne ; may endeavour to return and leave the country, probably for America. Kindly cause every possible inquiry to be made at railway termini, hotels, from carmen, at shipping offices, & c., & c., also watch inward and outward bound vessels ; and, if found, arrest and telegraph to GEORGE WILLIAMS, Chief Superintendent. WANTED, for the murder of Patrick M'Ginty, in Lawson- street, Preston, on the afternoon of Monday, the 3rd September, inst., Anthony Henry:— 22 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, gray eyes, scar right cheek and shoulder, scars left of back, buttock, and left knee, scar bottom of back, hair cut short and comes down to a point in line with nose, very prominent teeth, and it is with great difficulty that he can cover them; has a recent scar on left jaw- bone, speaks with a strong Irish accent, is a native of Innisvagle, Ballycroy, county Mayo, Ireland; is a labourer. Dressed in dark cloth or moleskin coat, moleskin trowsers and vest, dark cloth cap, heavy laced- up boots, clothing dirty and of a clay colour; supposed to be wearing a white muffler and had a red and white pocket handkerchief. Has a blue or old cut- mark, shape S, on forehead. A verdict of wilful murder against Henry was returned by the Coroner's Jury, at the inquest held, at Preston, on the 5th day of September, instant, and the Coroner has issued his Warrant for his apprehension. ATTEMPTED MURDER. £ 200 REWARD. WHEREAS, at 12.20 A. M., Tuesday, August 28th, 1883, an attempt was made by one of two men ( whose descriptions appear below) to murder a Police Constable by means of a knife and a revolver, in Cottenham Park- road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon. A reward of £ 200 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the assailant or assailants ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious Pardon to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the assault who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Description: First man, age 35, height 5 feet 4 inches, complexion fresh, short sandy whiskers and moustache, dress short dark jacket, dark brown trowsers, appearance of a mechanic, probably has his face disfigured from a blow. Second man: Age 45, height 6 feet, complexion sallow, dark whiskers, dress long black frock coat, dark trowsers and vest, low black felt hat, shabby genteel appearance. Description of Revolver: A small six- chambered, pin cartridge, one of a cheap make, quite new, now in possession of Police. DESCRIPTION of James M'Gregor ( mother's surname Stephenson), native of Tavnaghdrissagh, parish of Layd, county Antrim, who stands charged with having, on the 3rd September, 1883, in the barony of Lower Glenarm, parish of Tickmacreevan, stolen from the person of John M'Callion a silver lever watch, cream colour dial, No. 20,019, maker James Orr, Ballymena ;— Dark eyes, long nose, dark com- plexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 11 inches high, about 28 years of age, dark hair, wore all his beard which is dark, black moustache ; wore a velvet cap, dark frock coat, light tweed trowsers, and dark vest; is a miller, sometimes works in iron foundry. DESCRIPTION of James Morrissey ( mother's name Mary Cashin), native of Smithstown, who stands charged with having, on the 29th September, 1883, in a public house, at mullinavat, in the barony of Knock-- topher, parish of Kilbeacon, seriously assaulted James Dollard, by striking him on the forehead with a glass tumbler, from the effects of Which liis'life Is now ill imminent danger, though he did not complain thereof until 16th instant:— Has a cut ( which may- be now healed) on the palm of right hand, from the effects of the tumbler breaking therein when striking Dollard, clean face without either beard or whiskers, gray or blue eyes, regalar nose, fair complexion, regular face, slight make, 5 feet 7| inches high, about 20 years of age, dark hair; wore a dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a farm labourer, and it is believed he left for America on 16th instant. W., and when in Glasgow he resided at 136, Stirling- road. Accused absconded on 16th instant, and before leaving spoke of going to Auckland, New Zealand. Police officers are requested to have particular search and inquiry made for accused at hotels, shipping offices, and other likely places, and if found to arrest and wire to the subscriber, when an officer will be sent for him. DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned, who stands charged with having stolen sundry sums of money, the property of the Guardians of the South Dublin Union, by whom he was employed as a Collector of Rates:— William Atkinson, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, brown hair, no whiskers, heavy brown moustache, round fresh face covered with blotches ; dressed respectably in dark clothcs and tall silk hat. He was at one time Master of the South Dublin Union Workhouse, He was last seen here on Thursday, the 11th instant. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Frederick Germaine, convicted at Dublin, county of the city of Dublin, at Trinity Sessions, on 14th July, 1882, for larceny, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 25 years of age on conviction, can read and write, is a Roman Catholic, single, is a teacher, born in Yorkshire, resided before conviction in Dublin, hi3 friends reside in Leeds; brown hair, brown eyes, dark eyebrows, long and thin nose, small mouth, fair complexion, oval visage, medium make, 5 feet 4J- inches high. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison on 13th July, 1883, on licence, and went to reside at 24, Charlotte- street, Dublin, which place he has left without notifying change to the Police. He is supposed to have gone to Belfast. ih the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, September 5, 1883. DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned juvenile offender, who absconded on 20th instant, at about one o'clock. vwhile proceeding to the Reformatory from Naas Prtypn :— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 18 Tears of ago, 5 feet 4 inches high, pretty stout make, ,/ Sallow complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, nose a little fumed up, round visage, heavy countenance, small '• mark of ah old cut above right eye on forehead, and small - warfeon left side of upper lip, formerly belonged to Tralee county Kerry; his parents are dead. The drb# L all with Reformatory stamp, consists of cord trhfvsere, cord sleeved vest, jerry hat, strong nailed boots fastened by strap and buckle, and blay cotton socks, The absconder is likely to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with XI. DESCRIPTION of Michael Enright, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 29tli of August, 1883, in the barony of Tulla Lower, parish of Kiltenanlea, stolen from the dwelling- house of John Flynn, one pair of laced shoes, one pair of tweed trowsers, one pair of socks, two ounces of tobacco, and 7s. 6d. in silver :— Slovenly gait, leans forward when walking, thin face, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 40 years of age, fair hair; wore a black cloth cap with a peak, black coat, dark tweed trowsers and vest. DESCRIPTION of John Ryan, native of Thurles, county Tipperavy, who is in custody, charged with having, on the 23rd of October, 1883, in th'^ barony of Newry, parish of Newry, stolen a gold watch and chain, and who may have committed offences elsewhere:— Prominent under lip, and narrow chin, very delicate appearance, dark full eyes, long nose, fair complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 20 years of age, fair hair; wore a jerry hat, brown waterproof coat, brown trowsers, and blue vest; is a servant. DESCRIPTION of Walter Meally, native of Crutt, Castlecomer, who stands charged with having, on the 15th August, 1883, in the barony of Fassidinnen,. parish of Castlecomer, seriously assaulted John Ryan, of Moneenroe :— May have small blue marks on face, result of coal cuts; hazel eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, rather stout make, 5 feet 9^ inches high, about 25 years of age ; wore a soft cap, dark coat and trowsers ; is a coal miner. DESCRIPTION of Mary Shanaghan and Patrick Shanaghan, natives of 2l£, Meath- street, Dublin, who stand charged with having, on the 20th October, 1883, in the barony of Ballybritt, parish of Birr, stolen two shawls out of a draper's shop at Parsonstown :— 1. Wants an upper front tooth, dark eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 4 feet 5 inches high, about 23 years of age, dark hair;, wore a dark cloak and old dark dress ; is a travelling, gambler. 2. Marks of old cuts under light eye, large ears, brown eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, thin face, wiry medium make, 5 leet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair ; wore a jerry hat, light coat, dark trowsers and vest; is a travelling gambler. DESCRIPTION of a person,- name and native place A known, who stands charged with having, on the ij'th day of September, 1883, in the barony of coolestown, parish of Monasteroris, townland of > f5denderry, refused to give any account of himself :— Dressed as a monk, clean shaved face, heavy under jaws, frong teeth rather large and irregular, blue eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 35 years of age, fair bair; wore a soft hat, blue dress coat, black cloth trowsers, and black vest. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Faughnan ( mother's surname Hearon), native of Glosdrummon, who stands charged with having, on the night of 6th October, 1883, in the barony of Mohill, parish of Cloone, being one of a party who attacked the dwelling- house of John Boyle, of Edergole and seriously assaulted Boyle and his wife :— Wild gray eyes, regular nose, ruddy complexion, long thin face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 20 years of age, brown hnir; wore a soft low hat, dark coat, trowsers, and vest; is a farmers son. DESCRIPTION of Ellen Maguire and Mary Hayden, natives of Longford, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 10th or morning of the 11th September, ^ 883, in the barony of Ardagh, parish of Templemichael, absconded from the Longford Workhouse Fever Hospital ( they being pauper attendants on the sick therein), taking with them several articles of clothing, the property of the Guardians, viz.:— 2 shifts, 2 woollen handkerchiefs, and 4 petticoats, marked with the brand of the Longford Union. 1. Marks of scrofula under chin, hazel eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 4 feet 9 inches high, about 30 years of age, brown hair turning gray; wore the union clothing; is a pauper. 2. Dark eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, regular lace, slight make, 4 feet 6 inches high, about 22 years of age, brown hair; wore the union clothing ; is a pauper. Longford," Sep. 13, 1883.
