DUBLIN, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. MURDER. £ 100 REWARD. WANTED for the murder of John Dukes, in Hill- street, Birmingham, on the night of the 5th August, 1883, Martin M'Gann and William Ryan :—- 1. Description of Martin M'Gann— About 21 years of age, 5 feet 0 or 7 inches high, hair brown, com- plexion fair, slightly freckled, proportionate build; cut scar on left cheek; walks erect; speaks slowly, with an Irish accent. Dressed in a dark coat, brown trowsers, and silk handkerchief round his neck. Trade, wood button turner. 2. Description of William Ryan— Age 19, height 5 feet 6 or 7 inches, hair dark, complexion sallow, thin build. Dressed, when last seen, in a dark cuta- way coat and black greasy trowsers. Trade, a brass caster. The above- named men absconded from Birming- ham on the 25th August last, both having lived in Grosvenor- street, « Ladywood, Birmingham, and are well known in Essingtori- street,' Birmingham, where they formerly resided, and are said to be in Ireland, whero M'Gann's parents reside. See previosu infor- mations. A verdict of wilful murder against M'Gann and Ryan was returned by the Coroner's Jury at the in- quest, held at Birmingham on the 13th September instant, and the Coroner has issued his Warrants for their apprehension. Notice is hereby given, that Her Majesty's Government offer a reward of £ 100 to any person other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and con- viction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. ( 27031 M.— 4 J\ £ 5 REWARD. STOLEN from a field in High Legh, on the night of the 13th instant, a brown horse :— ll years old, 15- 2 or 15- 3 in height, in very good condition, white spot on top of back where saddle fits, also on one of the liind legs, mane and tail very rough through rubbing against stumps, < tc., mouth partly open when travelling ; if without bearing reins, carries his head very low; large s- ar inside thigh right hind leg. WANTED, for the murder of Patrick M'Ginty, in Lawson- street, Preston, on the afternoon of Monday, the 3rd September, inst., Anthony Henry:— 22 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, gray eyes, scar right cheek and shoulder, scars left of back, buttock, and left knee, scar bottom of back, hair cut short and comes down to a point in line with nose, very prominent teeth, and it is with great difficulty that lie can cover them; has a recent scar on left jaw- bone, speaks with a strong Irish accent, is a native of Innisvagle, Ballycroy, county Mayo, Ireland; is a labourer. Dressed in dark cloth or moleskin coat, moleskin trowsers and vest, dark cloth cap, heavy laced- up boots, clothing dirty and of a clay colour; supposed to be wearing a white muffler and had a red and white pocket handkerchief. Has a blue or old cut- mark, shape S, on forehead. A verdict of wilful murder against Henry was returned by the Coroner's Jury, at the inquest held, at Preston, on the 5th day of September, instant, and the Coroner has issued his Warrant for his apprehension. ( 27042 M.— 49858.) 5 I ATTEMPTED MURDER. £ 200 REWARD. WHEREAS, at 12.20 A. M., Tuesday, August 28th, 1883, an attempt was made by one of two men ( whose descriptions appear below) to murder a Police Constable by means of a knife and a revolver, in Cottenham Park- road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon. A reward of £ 200 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the assailant or assailants ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious Pardon to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the assault who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Description: First man, age 35, height 5 feet 4 inches, complexion fresh, short sandy whiskers and moustache, dress short dark jacket, dark brown trowsers, appcarance of a mechanic, probably has his face disfigured from a blow. Second man: Age 45, height 6 feet, complexion sallow, dark whiskers, dress long blacli frock coat, dark trowsers and vest, low black felt hat, shabby genteel appearance. Description of Revolver: A small six- chambered, pin cartridge, one of a cheap make, quite new, now iu possession of Police. Licence- holder, Philip Doyle, 14,738, has not been arrested; Hue- and- Ory, 7th November, 1882, SCOTTISH POLICE. COUNTY OF LANARK. WANTED at County Constabulary Office, Airdrie, on a Sheriff's Warrant, charged with assault by stabbing, committed in the Airdrie District of this county, on Wednesday, 22nd August, 1883, Adam Archibald ( commonly called Ned) :— About 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark reddish brown hair and moustache, whiskers shaved off, but may now be growing them, rather large mouth, thin features, ordinary build, round shoulders, slovenly appearance, native of north of Ireland, but has recently been working together with a brother at the Mossend Ironworks, near Bellshill; speaks with an Irish accent; dressed generally in dirty ragged clothes, but has a dark corded coat suit; is a labourer in ironworks. He is a Protestant, believed to be an Orangeman, and is very much addicted to drink ; has resided at Partick, Johnstone, Renfrew, and Addiewell, where he worked about ironworks and like labour. It is particularly requested that the above described should be apprehended, and any information Toined_ communicate by telegram or otherwise with DONALD STEWART, Superintendent, County Constabulary, Air- drie. WANTED at County Constabulary Office, Airdrie, on Sheriff's Warrants, charged with assault to the danger of life, committed at Coatbridge, on 20th August, 1883, John Sloey and Edward Slaven :— 1. Is a Roman Catholic, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender build, swarthy complexion, '. rown hair, light fair moustache; speaks with a broken English and Irish accent; wore a black silk cap, blue doeskin jacket and vest, brown tweed trowsers, and Lome shoes; is a miner; has served recently in the Army, and is now in the Reserve. He has a smart appearance and walks erect. Is slightly pockpitted. 2. Is a Roman Catholic, 24 years of age," 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, ordinary build, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, small dark moustache, hazel eyes ; speaks with a Scotch accent; wore a black silk cap, black corded cloth jacket, vest, and trowsers, and Lome shoes; is a miner or puddler. WANTED at County Constabulary _ 0 ffli'L, Airdrie, on Sheriff's Warrants, charged with assault by stabbing, committed at Mossend, on 22, od August, 1883, Hugh Knox and Hugh White: - 1. Is a Protestant, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5J or 6 inches high, stout build, broad face, red complexion as though burned, red hair, red and slight moustache, red whiskers, very thin on clu » ks; wore a black pieced cap, dark corded cloth coat and vest, and dark corded trowsors; is a puddler or labourer. * 3. Is a Protestant, about 28 years of age, 5 feetOoHtO inches high, slender build, thin face, sallow com- plexion, fair hair, fair and thin moustache, fair and thin whiskers ; wore a dark coat and vest, and light gray tweed trowsers ; is a labourer. No. 1 generally wears his cap on back of head, his hair hanging down over his brow, walks with a rolling gait, and has resided in Mossend for seven years. No. 2 has resided in Mossend for about two years. Both are Irishmen, Protestants, and believed to be Orangemen. WANTED at County Constabulary Office, Airdrie, on Sheriff's Warrant, charged with mobbing and rioting, at Coatbridge, on 22nd August, 1883, Samuel THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1883. Park:— Is a Protestant, 27 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, ordinary build, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, light brown moustache, light brown • whiskers shaved on chin, gray eyes; speaks with a Scotch accent; wore a dark tweed hoeked down cap, dark brown cloth jacket and vest, and light gray tweed trowsers, all well worn and shabby; is a miner and engine cleaner. The above- described served 6 J years in the Cameronian Highlanders, and joined the 1st Class Army Reserve on 13th January, 1883. Previous to his absconding from Coatbridge, on 24th August last, he dropped his Army Discharge and Reserve Papers, No. 1560, which are now in the possession of the Police. Army and Pension Pay- Officers and Postmasters are specially requested to note this, and detain the man till handed over to the Police, should he apply for his Reserve quarter's pay, falling due on the 1st October, 1883. As each of the accused were more or less actively engaged in the recent disturbances in the Airdrie District of this county, it is especially requested that diligent search and inquiry may be made for them at all likely places, and very general information circulated to pit and ironwork managers, contractors, recruiting officers, railway stationmasters, and others. One guinea remuneration will be paid in respect of each of the accused to any person, not a member of the Lanarkshire Constabularly, who shall cause any one of the following men to be apprehended on or before 3rd October, 1883, viz.:— Adam Archibald, aged 24 ( on Police information, dated 15th September, 1883) ; John Sloey, aged 28 ; Edward Slaven, aged 24; Hugh Knox, aged 37; Hugh White, aged 28 ; Samuel Park, aged 27. CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE. FORGERY AND EMBEZZLEMENT OP £ 209 17s. 4c?. AY ANTED here on a Sheriff's Warrant, charged with forgery and' embezzlement of £ 209 17s. Ad., the property of his employers, Messrs. Ross and Marshall, Lighter Owners, 18, Cathcart- street, Greenock, Thomas Reid Dunlop:— A clerk, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout made, brown hair, fairish x brown whiskers, beard, and moustache all cut short, florid complexion, small nose, husky voice; dressed in a blue cloth jacket, vest, and trowsers, and black hard felt hat; weighs about 13 stones, and has a swaggering gait; is well up in shipping business; also married, and resided in Greenock. Police Officers are requested to have search and inquiry made for accused at hotels, shipping, and other likely places, and should he be arrested or traced, communicate with A. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Frederick Germaine, convicted at Dublin, county of the city of Dublin, at Trinity Sessions, on 14th July, 1882, for larceny, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude ;— 25 years of age on conviction, can read and write, is a Roman Catholic, single, is a teacher, born in Yorkshire, resided before conviction in Dublin, his friends reside in Leeds; brown hair, brown eyes, dark eyebrows, long and thin nose, small mouth, fair complexion, oval visage, medium make, 5 feet 4} inches high. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison on 13th July, 1883, on licence, and went to reside at 24, Charlotte- street, Dublin, which place he has left without notifying change to the Police. . He is supposed to have gone to Belfast. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, September 5, 1883. ( 27013 M.— 49812.) PARTICULARS relative to English convict Patrick Lynch, C 1023, convicted in Omagh, county Tyrone, on 11th October, 1870, for subsequent felony, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude:— 23 years of age on conviction, single, is a tailor, born in Boyle, resided before conviction in Tunstall, Staffordshire, his friends reside in Boyle, county Roscommon; dark brown hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, oval visage, proportionate make, two cuts on crown, one on back of head, small scar above right eyebrow, two blue marks below left elbow, burn scar top of shoulder, blue tattoo marks above wrist, scar on small of back outside buttock, scar on back of right shoulder, four vaccination marks on left arm, scars on right hip, on right thigh and on right shin, 5 feet If inches high. This man was released from Dartmoor Prison on 10th April, 1883, and reported himself on the 12th of same month to the Police at Dublin, on the 13th April he reported himself at Naas, on the 16th April at Athlone, on the 22nd April at Boyle, from whence he went on the same date to Mohill, county Leitrim, but he has no reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, Dublin Castle, August 15, 1883. ( 26873 M.— 49582.) DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned juvenilo offender, who absconded on 20th instant, at about one o'clock, while proceeding to the Reformatory from Naas Prison :— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pretty stout make, sallow complexion, faii\ hair, gray eyes, nose a little turned up, round visage, heavy countenance, small mark of an old cut above right eye on forehead, and small wart on left side of upper lip, formerly belonged to Tralee, county Kerry; his parents are dead. The dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of cord trowsers, cord sleeved vest, jerry hat, strong nailed boots fastened by strap and buckle, and bkiy cotton socks. The absconder is likely to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of James M'Gregor ( mother's surname Stephenson), native of Tavnaghdrissagh, parish of Layd, county Antrim, who stands charged with having, on the 3rd September, 1883, in the barony of Lower Glenarm, parish of Tickmacreevan, stolen from the person of John M Callion a silver lever watch, cream colour dial, No. 20,049, maker James Orr, Ballymena;— Dark eyes, long nose, dark com- plexion, long face, stout make, 5 feet 11 inches high, about 28 years of age, dark hair, wore all his beard which is dark, black moustache ; wore a velvet cap, dark frock coat, light tweed trowsers, and dark vest; is a miller, sometimes works in iron foundry. DESCRIPTION of William Gates, native of Curragh Camp, who stands charged with having, on the 23rd August, 1883, in'the barony of East Offally, parish of Ballysax, fradulently embezzled money to the amount of £ 22 5*. 2id., delivered to and received by him for and on account of his master, Bartholomew Murphy, Postmaster, Curragh Camp :— Delicate- looking, dark eyes, thin nose, pale complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet high, about 16 years of age, dark hair cut short; wore a felt hat, and navy blue suit; is a clerk in post- offices. DESCRIPTION of Walter Meally, native of Crutt, Castlecomer, who stands charged with having,, on the 15th August, 1883, in the barony of Fassidinnen, parish of Castlecomer, seriously assaulted John Ryan, of Moneenroe :— May have small blue marks on face, result of coal cuts ; hazel eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, rather stout make, 5 feet 9^ inches high, about 25 years of age; wore a soft cap, dark coat and trowsers ; is a coal miner. DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknown, who stands chargcd with having, on the 14tli day of September, 1883, in the barony of Coolestown, parish of Monasteroris, townland of Edenderry, refused to give any account of himself :— Dressed as a monk, clean shaved face, heavy under jaws, frong teeth rather large and irregular, blue eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 35 years of age, fair hair; wore a soft hat, blue dress coat, black cloth trowsers, and black vest. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 30th September, 1882, absconded from the Philipstown Reformatory School, King's County:— Peter Clarke, 712, 18 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, brown hair, gray eyes, short nose, regular mouth, oval visage, scar on each cheek, formerly belonged to Belfast, his parents reside at 25, Millfield- lane, Belfast. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on'remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of Ellen Maguire and Mary Hayden, natives of Longford, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 10th or morning of the 11th September, 1883, in the barony of Ardagh, parish of Tcmplemichael, absconded from the Longford Workhouse Fever Hospital ( they being pauper attendants on the sick therein"), taking with them soveral articles of clothing, the property of the Guardians, viz.:— 9 shifts, 2 woollen handkerchiefs, and 4 petticoats, marked with the brand of the Longford Union. 1. Marks of scrofula under chin, hazel eyes, regular nose,- fair complexion, round face,' stout make, 4 feet 9 inolies high, about 30 years of age, brown hair turning gray; wore the union clothing ; is a pauper. 2. DESCRIPTION of Dominick Gara, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 25th June, 1883, at Lung, in the barony of Costelloe, parish of Kilcolman,' assaulted Michael Gara seriously:— Turns out his toes when walking, very stout make, stooped shoulders, red complexion, long full red face, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 67 years of age, gray hair and whiskers ; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Hosey, native of Edenderry, who stands charged with having, on the 29th July, 1883, in the barony of Lune, parish of Killaconnigan, broken into the dwelling- house of Michael Browne, of Donore, with intent to commit a felony therein :— Old cut on upper lip and bridge of nose, gray eyes, flat nose, fair complexion, small face, slight make, 5 feet 3 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a hard black hat, tweed coat, light tweed trowsers and vest; all the clothing much worn ; is a tramping tailor. M., in the barony of Maryborough West, parish of Clonmagh, feloniously stabbed Timothy Sinnott, of Parkavilla, on the public road at Clonbane, thereby endangering his life :— Sallow complexion, thin face, sharp thin nose, wiry make, no beard or whiskers, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, and 23 years of age, dark hair; is a returned American. M., in the barony of Upper- woods, parish of Offerlane, committed highway robbery at Rushall, near Castletown, by taking a purse and sixpence or sevenpence which it contained from Michael Hyland, of Aughafin :— Apparently lame as if boots were leaning on him, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 35 years of age, dark brown hair wore a soft hat, dark or blue coat, light trowsers, check shirt, and elastic boots; is sus- pected to be a tramp. Westmeath DESCRIPTION" of two men, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 26th day of August, 1883, in the barony of Clonlonan, parish of Ballyloughloe, feloniously entered the dwelling- house of Thomas Collins, of Belville, and placed revolvers against the shoulder and breast of Mary Collins, and put a book into her hand to swear by it that she would give up herding; one of the party then fired a shot, and the pellets lodged in a dog that was lying under; the table:— 1. Blue eyes, regular nose, red complexion, full red face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 25 years of age, black hair; wore a soft black hat and old gray tweed coat; had a red handkerchief round his neck. 2.
