DUBLIN, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7> 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. ATTEMPTED MURDER. £ 200 REWARD. WHEREAS, at 12.20 A. M., Tuesday, August 28th, 1883, an attempt was made by one of two men ( whose descriptions appear below) to murder a Police Constable by means of a knife and a revolver, in Cottenham Park- road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon. A reward of £ 200 will be paid by Iler Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person • belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) . who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the assailant or assailants ; • arid the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious Pardon to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the assault who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Description: First man, age 35, height 5 feet 4 inches, complexion fresh, short sandy whiskers and moustache, dress short dark jacket, tfcn- k brbVntrowsenr, appearance of n mechanic, probably has his face disfigured from a blow. Second man: Age 43, height 6 feet, complexion sallow, dark whiskers, dress long black frock coat, dark trowsers and vest, low black felt hat, shabby gonteel appearance. _ Description of Revolver: A small six- chambered, pin cartridge, one of a cheap make, quite new, now in possession of Police. WANTED here on a Sheriffs Warrant, charged with the forgery of a bill for £ 142, Peter M Bride :— A master plumber, Bishop street, Anderston, about 44 or 46 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout made, dark hair, small side whiskers, otherwise clean shaved, sallow complexion, stoops slightly when walking, dresses respectably, resided at 19, Albion- crescent, Hillhead. Accused absconded on 16th instant. Police Officers are requested to make particular search and inquiry for accused at hotels, shipping offices, and other likely places, and, should he be arrested or traced, to communicate with A. PARTICULARS relative to Convict John James, or Cooke, or Barker, A 472, convicted at Belfast, county Antrim, at E ister Quarter Sessions, on the 25tli April, 1882, for house breaking and previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to 15 years' penal servitude and 5 years Police supervision:— 39 years of age on conviction, can read and write, is a Roman Catholic, single, is a shoemaker ; his friends reside in Manchester; brown hair, gray eyas, brown eyebrows, large nose, small mouth, fresh complexion, rouud visage, J., anchor, and cross on left arm, ttout make, 5 feet 6 inches high,. This convict escaped from Galway Prison on the 4th instant. Notice.— V reward of from £ 3 to £ 5 may be paid to any person who may apprehend and deliver up a convict who shall have effected his escape from a Government Prison. Application to be made to the Governor of the Prison. By Act 19th and 20th Vic., cap. 68, sec. 32, it is provided that any person who shall by any means whatever aid and assist any prisoner to escape, or in attempting to escape, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof, shall be kept in penal servi- tude for any term not less than 6 nor more than 8 years. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Frederick Germaine, convicted at Dublin, county of the city of Dublin, at Trinity Sessions, on 14th July, 1882, for larceny, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude :— 25 years of age on conviction, can read and write, is a Roman Catholic, single, is a teacher, bora in Yorkshire, resided before conviction in Dublin, his friends reside in Leeds; brown hair, brown ej'es, dark eyebrows, long and thin nose, small mouth, fair complexion, oval visage, medium make, 5 feet 4. V inches high. This man was released from Mountjoy Prison on 13th July, 1883, on licence, and went to reside at 24, Charlotte- street, Dublin, which place he has left without notifying change to the Police. ITc is supposed to have gone to Belfast. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 3 t & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, September 5, 1888. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick O'Brien or Bryan, 11028, convicted in Limerick, at Limerick Spring Assizes, on 4th March, 1875, for larceny after previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude :— 38 years of age on conviction, single, is a labourer, born in Temple- bredin, county Limerick, where be resided before conviction, his friends reside at Hospital, county Limerick; bald hair turning gray, gray eyes, brown eyebrows, small and cocked nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, oval visage, forehead receding, a round pimple near corner of right eye, P. and B. tattooed on right arm, average make, 5 feet 3£ inches high. This man was discharged on licence from Mountjoy Prison on 13th July, 1883, and went to Limerick. He reported himself at New Pallas on 16th July, but he has left that place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic.; cap. 112. General Prisons Board, August 20, 1883. ( 26904 sr. — 49649.) ( 27013 u.— 49812.) PARTICULARS relative to English convict Patrick Lynch, C 1623, convicted in Omagh, county Tyrone, on 11th October, 1876, for subsequent felony, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude:— 23 years of age on conviction, single, is a tailor, born in Boyle, resided before conviction in Tunstall, Staffordshire, his friends reside in Boyle, county Roscommon ; dark brown hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, oval visage, proportionate make, two cuts on crown, one on back of head, small scar - above right eyebrow, two blue marks below left elbow, burn scar top of shoulder, blue tattoo marks above wrist, scar on small of back outside buttock, scar on back of right shoulder, four vaccination marks on left arm, scars on right hip, on right thigh and on right shin, 5 feet 1J inches high. This man was released from Dartmoor Prison on 10th April, 1883, and reported himself on the 12th of same month to the Police at Dublin, on the 13th April he reported himself at Naas, on the 16th April at Athlone, on the 22nd April at Boyle, from whence he went on the same date to Mohill, county Leitriin, but he has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, Dublin Castle, August 15, 1883. ( 26872 M.— 49582.) DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned juvenile offender, who absconded on 20th instant, at about one o'clock, while proceeding to the Reformatory from Naas Prison :— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pretty stout make, sallow complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, nose a little turned up, round visage, heavy countenance, small mark of an old cut above right eye on forehead, and small wart on left side of upper lip, formerly belonged to Tralee, county Kerry ; his parents are dead. The dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of cord trowsers, cord sleeved vest, jerry . hat, strong nailed boots fastened by strap and buckle, and blay cotton- socks. The absconder is likely to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of William Hanna, native of Bally- wadick, who stands charged with having, on the 31st August, 1883, in the barony of Lower Antrim, parish of Connor, stolen from the dwelling- house of his master, James M'Ilonan, of Carnearney, near Connor, in the county of Antrim, three £ 5 notes and three £ 1 notes:— Gray eyes, flat nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 18 years of age; wore a low dark hat, brown coat, cord trowsers, and brown tweed vest; is a farm labourer. DESCRIPTION of William John M'Cartney, native of Balmorel, ntur Belfast, who stands charged with having, on the morning of the 16th August, 1883, in the barony of Lower Massereene, parish of Killead, stolen a heifer, value for £ 12, the property of James Thompson, of Kilcross :— Two cut marks on fore- head, three vaccination marks on right arm, brown eyes, regular nose, frosh complexion, round face, medium make, .5 feet 4 inches high, about 19 years of age, brown hair; wore a dark coat, light trowsers, dark vest, and military boots ; is a labourer; is a deserter from the Antrim Militia. DESCRIPTION of Charles Murray, native place un- known, who stands charged with having, on the night of the 20th August, 1883, in the barony of Lower Massereene, parish of Killead, stolen a horse, value for £ 20, out of the stables of David Wallace, at Ballymather :— Long nose, sallow complexion, small thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 25 years of age, black hair and small black beard; wore a dark tweed coat, dark trowsers, and vest; is a horse and cattle drover. ( 58452 c.— 5851.) \ DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 8th August, 1883, absconded from the Malone Reformatory School at Belfast:— William John Orr, 348, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout make, sallow complexion, brown hair, small gray eyes, ordinary mouth, oval visage, burn mark on nose, J. tattoed on right forearm, blue mark between thumb and forefinger of left hand, and scar on forefinger of same hand ; formerly belonged to Belfast, where his parents reside. The school dress, all with Reformato » y stamp, consists of dark tweed trowsers, gray tweed vest and overcoat, felt hat, nailed blucher boots, house No. 13. DESCRIPTION of Bernard O'Hare, native of Newry, who stands'charged with having, on the 23rd July, 1883, in the barony of Upper Orier, parish of Newry, stabbed Patrick O'Hare, with a knife, and escaped from the escort when on his way to Bridewell, on remand:— Gray eyes, regular nose, fresh com- plexion, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 27 years of age, brown hair, small thin side whiskers and moustache ; wore a dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Michael Smith, native of Bruskey, who Sstands charged with having, at about nine o'clock P. M., on the 7th August, 1883, in the barony of Clon- mahon, parish of Ballintemple, feloniously stabbed Edward Smith on public road, near townland of Bruskey, thereby endangering his life :— Old cut- mark over one eye, gray or blue eyes, long nose, dark freckled complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 27 years of age, dark ha, ir; had side whiskers and moustache ; had chin shaved. DESCRIPTION of Michael Enright, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 29th of August, 1883, in the barony of Tulla Lower, parish of Kiltenanlea, stolen from the dwelling- house of John Flynn, one pair of laceil shoes, one pair of tweed trowsers,- one pafr of'sScks, two ounces of tobacco, and 7 « . 6d. in silver :— Slove. ily gait, leans forward when walking, thin face, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, about 40 years of age, fair hair ; wore a black cloth cap with a peak, black coat, dark tweed trowsers and vest. DESCRIPTION of Michacl Sullivan, native of Barra- hauring, who standi charged with having, on' the 3rd May, 1883, in the barony of East Muskery, parish of Donoughmore, stolen three sheep, the property of Richard Golden:— Gray eyes, straight nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 18 years of age, dark brown hair ; wore a tweed coat, cord trowsers, and tweed vest: is a labourer. Is believed to have gone to Wales. Information sworn and Warrant issued 10th May, 1883. Ballincallig, Aug. 21, 1883. ( 59154 c.— 10056.) DESCRIPTION of Ellen Rose ( mother's surname Hannon), native of Limerick city, who stands charged with having, on the 31st July, 1883, failed and neglected to appear at Passage West Petty Sessions, to prosecute her deposition in a rape case, as bound by recognizance to do :— Regular nose, fresh com- plexion, regular face, medium make, about 5 feet 4 inches high, about 36 years of age, light brown hair; wore an old grayish shawl, grayish petticoat, braided with red from knees down, and an old black silk body; speaks with Limerick accent. The Con- stabulary at Passage West hold a Warrant for her arrest, and in the event of her being found it is re quested that the Head Constable there be telegraphed to, so that the Warrant may be sent on with a man who can identify her. DESCRIPTION of James Boyland, native of Dundalkr who stands charged witfi having, on the 30th of August, 1883, in the barony of Upper Iveagh, Lower Half, parish of Drumgooland, stolen a purse contain- ing 8s. 4and a pair of elastic boots, the property of Arthur Lundy. The purse and boots can be identified:— Black eyes, short cocked nose, dark complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 2 inches high, about 16 years of age, black hair; wore a gray coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Mary M'Cabe ( robbery of money), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th April, 1883. Galway. DESCRIPTION of John James, alias John Cooke, alias John Barker, native of England, who stands charged with having, on the 4th September. 1883, in the barony of Galway, parish of St. Nicholas, escaped from the Galway Gaol, he being under sentence of 15 years' penal servitude, for house- breaking, convicted at Belfast on 25th, April, 1882 :— Letter J, anchor, and cross on left arm, and speaks with drawling English accent, gray eyes, large nose, fresh comp'exion, round face, stout make, 5- feet 6 inches high, about 39 years of age, brown hair; wore no coat, convict trowsers and vest. DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 8th of July, 1883, at Tuam, in the barony of Dunmore, parish of Tu- im, stolen a jennet, the property of John Darcy, of Tuam, and offered it for sale on his way from Tuam to Williamstown, Galway, E. R., in which direction he then pro- ceeded :— Brown moustache and shaved chin, long face, slender make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, brown hair; wore a hard jerry hat, blue pilot old frock coat_, corduroy trowscr?, and moleskin vest; military highlow boots; is a tramp,, looks like a tinker. Lamings, 18th Hussars, which were stolen from his tent in the Curragh Camp, parish of Ballysax, barony of East Offaly, on the evening of 1st September, 1883:— A gold keyless- watch with open face, white dial, gold hands and second hand; crest, a pelican feeding young in a nest, and motto " Fortuna Sequitur " were engraved on back, number unknown ; maker James M'Cabe, Corn- hill, London; value for £ 35. A gold Albert chain, a half- sovereign of 1820 attached, at one end a hook and at the other a swivel; the chain was made with joints, not links ; valueTor £ 5. • Kildare, September 3, 1883. Thomas Sex ( failing to appear when on bail), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 27th March, 1883. Mathew Smith ( attempt to commit a rape), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 16th March, 1883. William Tegan ( attempt to commit a rape), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 16th March, 1883. The man, name and native place unknown, described in Hue- and- Cry of 13th March, 1883, ( intimidation), not arrested. Kilkenny. Thomas Watson ( robbery of an ass, cart, and harness), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 3rd April, 1883. King's. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, x> n the 30th September, 1882, absconded from the Philipstown Reformatory School, King's County:— Peter Clarke, 712, 18 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, brown hair, gray eyes, short nose, regular mouth, oval visage, scar on each chee , formerly belonged to Belfast, his parents reside at 25, Millfield- lane, Belfast. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his convcyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ I. Patrick Keely ( attempt to set fire to a house, and failing to take his trial when bailed to do so), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 16th March, 1883. Mayo. DESCRIPTION of Dominick Gara, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 25th June, 188S, at Lung, in the barony of Costelloe, parish of Kilcolman, assaulted Michael Gara seriously:— Turns out his toes when walking, very stout make, stooped shoulders, red complexion, long full red face, 5 feat 8 inches high, about 67 years of age, gray hair and whiskers ; is a labourer.
