Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. Should irregularities arise in the delivery of the Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. DUBLIN, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. ATTEMPTED MURDER. £ 200 REWARD. WHEREAS, at 12.20 A. M., Tuesday, August 28th, 1883, an attempt was made by one of two men ( whose descriptions appear below) to murder a Police Constable by means of a knife and a revolver, in Cottenham Park- road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon. A reward of £ 200 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the assailant or assailants ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious Pardon to any accomplice not being the person who actually committed the assault who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Description: First man, age 35, height 5 feet 4 inqh. es, complexion fresh, short sandy whiskers and moustache, dress short dark jacket, dark brown trowsers, appearance of a mechanic, probably has his face disfigured from a blow. Seoond man: Age 45, height 6 feet, complexion sallow, dark whiskers, dress long black frock coat, dark trowsers and vest, low black felt hat, shabby genteel appearance. Description of Revolver: A small six- chambered, pin cartridge, one of a cheap make, quite new, now in possession of Police. STOLEN from the person of a gentleman at the Chester Autumn Sports, on the 29th August inst, a gold |- plate hunter:— No. 11,716, maker, " J. Rogers, Wilmington- square, London;" has " 0. J. Blelock, Chester," engraved on dome, and crest ( dove on cap, with laurel) on outside case. Bow gone. £ 2 reward will be paid by the owner to any one giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the thief and recovery of the watch. WHEREAS, the Coroner's Jury, on the 18th inst., found a verdict of wilful murder against Harry Hammond Swindells, for having, on the 16th inst., caused the death of James Wild, by shooting him with a revolver. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person, other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who will give such information as shall lead Jo the discovery of the Murderer. He is 49 years of age, 6 feet 3^ inches high, sallow! complexion, dark brown hair, moustache and beard American fashion, whiskers shaved off, dark blue! • eyes, Roman nose with blue mark on the bridge,' high check bones, large mouth, has anly one or tw • teeth in upper jaw, gear on right side of neck, littl finger of right hand crooked, walks with a swingin gait; dressed in a black ribbed double- breaste worsted sladk back jacket ( the tight shoulder and'ar: of which may bear traces of limewash), trowsers and ves of same material, new black soft billycock bat with large brim, new spring side boots with square toes > he formerly was steward in the service of the Allan Line Co., working between Liverpool and New York; is well known at the Liverpool docks; will no doubt endeavour to escape to America. CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE FORGERY. WANTED here on a Sheriff's Warrant, charged with the forgery of a bill for £ 142, Peter M'Bride:— A master plumber, Bishop- street, Anderston, about 44 or 46 years of age, 5. feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout made, dark hair, small side whiskers, otherwise clean shaved, sallow complexion, stoops slightly when walking, dresses respectably, resided at 19, Albion^ crescent, Hillhead. Accused absconded on 16th instant. Police Officers are requested to make particular search and inquiry for accused at hotels, shipping offices, and other likely places, and, should he be arrested or traced, to communicate with A. STOLEN from a dwelling- house at Rhyl, by means of entering the same during the absence of the inmates, the doors having been left unlocked, between 1 P. M. and 6 P. M., on the 27th instant:— A hunting lever watch, gold- plated case, a cannon and the word " Gibralter " over it on the one side and a ship on fire on the other; a lady's gold Geneva watch and chain and locket, with two ladies' portraits therein ; an old silver Verge watch; a massive gold ring and seal with the letter " B." on it; two gold watch- keys, tube of one broken off; an oval gold brooch, with gentleman's likeness therein, initialled on back " J. M. and G." in light colour hair ; blue enamelled gold brooch, with forget- me- not set in pearls, portrait ef a little girl at the back; a gold brooch, set in rubies of large size; a gold Mosaic brooch, with little dog on it; a gold camelian brooch and earrings; a pair of small jet earrings ; a small gold ring, with hair set in; a gold ring, set with small diamonds and rubies, design, a basket of flowers, and motto, " Constance pleases me," in French; three gold wedding rings; a gentleman's gold ring, with Irish diamonds circled round it; gentleman's gold sleeve links, with crest, hand and dagger; four large silver tablespoons, crest, hand, and dagger; a Morocco poeketbook. containing two sovereigns and several receipts ; two silver teaspoons, with initals " T. B." ; a gentleman's brown overcoat, with velvet collar ; two silver pencil cases and two silver shawl pins, chain attached; two silver tablespoons, engraved and initialled " T. L. B." G Division. PARTICULARS relative to Convict Patrick O'Brien or Bryan, 11028, convicted in Limerick, at Limerick Spring Assizes, on 4th March, 1875, for larceny after previous conviction for felony, and sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude:— 38 years of age on conviction, single, is a labourer, born in Temple- bredin, county Limerick, where he resided before conviction, his friends reside at Hospital, county Limerick; bald hair turning gray, gray eyes, brown eyebrows, small and cocked nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, oval visage, forehead receding, a round pimple near corner of right eye, P. and B. tattooed on right arm, average make, 5 feet inches high. This man was discharged on licence from Mountjoy Prison on 13th July, 1883, and went to Limerick. He reported himself at New Pallas on 16th July, but' he has left that place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. , General Prisons Board, August 20, 1883. ( 26904 M.— 49649.) PARTICULARS relative to English convict Patrick Lynch, C 1623, convicted in Omagh, county Tyrone, on 11th October, 1876, for subsequent felony, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude:— 23 years of age on conviction, single, is a tailor, born in Boyle, resided before conviction in Tunstall, Staffordshire, his friends reside in Boyle, county Roscommon; dark brown hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, oval visage, proportionate make, two cuts on crown, one on back of head, small scar above right eyebrow, two blue marks below left elbow, burn scar top of shoulder, blue tattoo marks above wrist, scar on small of back outside buttock, scar on back of right shoulder, four vaccination marks on left arm, scars on right hip, on right thigh and on right shin, 5 feet If inches high. This man was released from Dartmoor Prison on 10th April, 1883, and reported himself on the 12th of same month to the Police at Dublin, on the 13th April he reported himself at Naas, on the 16th April at Athlone, on the 22nd April at Boyle, from whence he went on the same date to Mohill, county Leitrim, but he has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, Dublin Castle, August 15, 1883.. ( 26872 M.— 49582.) PARTICULARS relative to English Convict John M'Gowan, D 1189, convicted in Leicester, at Assises, on 1st November, 1879, for manslaughter, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— 70 years of age on conviction, widower, is a labourer, born in Mayo, resided before conviction in Chapel- en- frith ; gray hair, light blue eyes, fresh complexion, round visage, short stout make, 5 feet 2| inches high, scar on crown, right side of chest, and right side of belly, large round scar on front of right shoulder, venesection marks on both arms. This man left London the 30th June, 1883, for Sligo, but he has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, July 25, 1883. ( 26735 M.— 49325.) a THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1883. PARTICULARS relative to Convict John O'Brien, 10765, convicted at Fermoy, county Cork, at Trinity Sessions, on 1st July, for larceny from person and former conviction, and sentenced to seven years' penal servitude :— 23 years of age on conviction, is a Roman Catholic, married, is a dealer, born in Clon- mel, resided before conviction in Barrack- street, Cork, his friends reside in Newmarket, Dublin; dark brown hair, hazel eyes, dark brown eyebrows, small nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, oval visage, average make, 5 feet 7 inches high, lost a front upper tooth, scars on head, three boil marks on right shin, burn mark on inside of left ankle, mark in left groin, scar on upper lip. This prisoner escaped from Lusk Prison at 9 30 A. M., on the 13th infant. Notice.— A. reward of lrom £ 3 to £ 5 may be paid to any person who may apprehend and deliver up a convict who shall have effected his escape from a Government Prison. Application to be made to the Governor of the Prison. By Act 19th and 20th Vic., cap. 68, sec. 32, it is provided that any person who shall by any means whatever, aid and assist any prisoner to escape, or in attempting to escape, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof, shall be kept in penal servi- tude for any term not less than 6 nor more than 8 years. DESCRIPTION of the undermentioned juvenile offender, who absconded on 20th instant, at about one o'clock, while proceeding to the Reformatory from Naas Prison :— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pretty stout make, sallow complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, nose a little turned up, round visage, heavy countenance, small mark of an old cut above right eye on forehead, and small wart on left side of upper lip, formerly belonged to Tralee, county Kerry ; his parents are dead. The dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of cord trowsers, cord sleeved vest, jerry hat, strong nailed boots fastened by strap and buckle, and blay cotton socks. The absconder is likely to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with XI. DESCRIPTION of William Hanna, native of Bally- wadick, who stands charged with having, on the 31st August, 1883, in the barony of Lower Antrim, parish of Connor, stolen from the dwelling- house of his master, James M'Ilonan, of Carnearney, near Connor, in the county of Antrim, three £ 5 notes and three XI notes:— Gray eyes, flat nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 18 years of age; wore a low dark hat, brown coat, cord trowsers, and brown tweed vest; is a farm labourer. DEeetttPTtON of William John M'Cartney, native of Balmorel near Belfast, who stands charged with having, on- the morning. of the 16th August, 1883, in the barony . of Lower Massereene, parish of Killead, stolen a heifer, value for £ 12, the property of James Thompson, of Kilcross :— Two cut marks on fore- head, tliree vaeeination marks on right arm, brown eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 19 years of age, brown hair; wore a dark coat, light trowsers, dark vest, and military boots ; is a labourer; is a ^ deserter from the Antrim Militia. DESCRIPTION of Charles Murray, native " place un- known, who stands charged with having, on the night pi tho JOdj August, 1883, in the barony of Lower Massereene, parish of Killead, stolen a horse, value for £ 20, out of the stables of David Wallace, at Ballymather:— Long nose, sallow complexion, small thin face, slight make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 25 years of age, black hair and small black beard; wore a dark tweed coat, dark trowsers, and vest; is a horse and cattle drover. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 8th August, 1883, absconded from the Malone Reformatory School at Belfast:— William John Orr, 348, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout make, sallow complexion, brown hair, small gray eyes, ordinary mouth, oval visage, burn mark on nose, J. tattoed on right forearm, blue mark between thumb and forefinger of left hand, and scar on forefinger of same hand; formerly belonged to Belfast, where his parents reside. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp, consists of dark tweed trowsers, gray tweed vest and overcoat, felt hat, nailed blucher boots, house No. 13. DESCRIPTION of Michael Smith, native of Bruskey, who stands charged with having, at about nine o'clock P. M., on the 7th August, 1883, in the barony of Clon- mahon, parish of Ballintemple, feloniously stabbed Edward Smith on public road, near townland of Bruskey, thereby endangering his life :— Old cut- mark over one eye, gray or blue eyes, long nose, dark freckled complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, about 27 years of age, dark hair; had side whiskers and moustache; had chin shaved. DESCRIPTION of Michael Sullivan, native of Barra- hauring, who stands charged with having, on the 3rd May, 1883, in the barony of East Muskery, parish of Donoughmore, stolen three sheep, the property of Richard Golden:— Gray eyes, straight nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 5 inches high, about 18 years of age, dark brown hair ; wore a tweed coat, cord trowsers, and tweed vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of James Boyland, native of Dundalk, who stands charged with having, on the 30th of August, 1883, in the barony of Upper Iveagh, Lower Half, parish of Drumgooland, stolen a purse contain- ing 8j. 4and a pair of elastic boots, the property of Arthur Lundy. The purse and boots can be identified:— Black eyes, short cocked no3e, dark complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 2 inches high, about 16 years of age, black hair; wore a gray coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 23rd August, 1883, absconded from the High- park Reformatory School, at Drumcondra, county Dublin:— Agnes Leavy, 13T2¥ years of age, 4 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, medium nose, medium mouth, oval visage, mark on the arm, formerly belonged to Temple Bar, her parents reside at 2, Royal- row, Ormond Market, Dublin. The school dress consists of brown stuff, brown petticoat, white slip, white cotton knitted stockings, and strong leather boots. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of her conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture her with XI. The school dress, all with Reformatory stamp consists of dark tweed trowsers, gray tweed vest and overcoat, felt hat, nailed blucher boots, house No. 87. DESCRIPTION of Ellen Rose ( mother's surname Hannon), native of Limerick city, who stands charged with having, on the 31st July, 1883, failed and neglected to appear at Passage West Petty Sessions, to prosecute her deposition in a rape case, as bound by recognizance to do :— Regular nose, fresh com- plexion, regular face, medium make, about 5 feet 4 inches high, about 36 years of age, light brown hair ; wore an old grayish shawl, grayish, petticoat, braided with red from knees down, and an old black silk body; speaks with Limerick accent. The Con- stabulary at Passage West hold a Warrant for her arrest, and in the event of her being found it is re- quested that the Head Constable there be telegraphed to, so that the Warrant may be sent on with a man who can identify her. DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknowr, who stands charged with having, on the 8th of July, 1883, at Tuam, in the barony of Dunmore, parish of Tuam, stolen a jennet, the property of Darcy, of Tuam, and offered it for sale on his way from Tuam to Williamstown, Galway, E. R., in which direction he then pro- ceeded :— Brown moustache and shaved chin, long face, slender make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 80 years of age, brown hair; wore a hard jerry hat, blue pilot old frock coat, corduroy trowsers, and moleskin vest; military highlow boots; is a tramp, looks like a tinker. DESCRIPTION of William Oates, native of Curragh Camp, who stands charged with having, on the 23rd August, 1883, in the barony of East Offally, parish of Ballysax, fradulently embezzled money to the amount of £ 22 5s. 2jd., delivered to and received by him for and on account of his master, Bartholomew Murphy, Postmaster, Curragh Camp :— Delicate- looking, dark eyes, thin nose, pale complexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet high, about 16 years of age, dark hair cut short; wore a felt hat, and navy bluo suit; is a clerk in post offices. DESCRIPTION of two men, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 26th day of August, 1883, in the barony of Clonlonan, parish of Ballyloughloe, feloniously entered the dwelling- house of Thomas Collins, of Belville, and placed revolvers against the shoulder and breast of Mary Collins, and put a book into her hand to swear by it that she would give up herding; one of the party then fired a shot, and the pellets lodged in a dog that was lying under the table:— 1.
