The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and vt Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded ou War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The * inount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. Absconded, charged with causing the death of a woman at Depiiord, on 4th instant:— a man, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache ( slight), blotched face, roman noee ; dressed in long black coat, blue guernsey, cord trousers, lsce boots, black har 1 felt hat; a brickmaker, known as CAST IRON JACK; will seek employment in brickfields. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, August 24. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a man while in a state of intoxication on the Glasgow and Carlisle Road, near Lockerbie, on the night of Lamb Fair, on 14th instant :— a single cased silver lever Watch, makers' name ' Russell & Co., Loudon, No. 42,103,' ' John McAdam,' engraved on cases. On following morning a watch answering to the above description was offered for sale in two watchmakers shops in Dumfries, but it was not sold, and may again be offered to a watchmaker. Stolen from the person at 8 p. m. on 18th instant ( whilst getting into a railway carriage at Knutsford Station) :— a silver Lever Waich, No. 56030, cream- coloured dial, centre seconds, patent stop, dark hands, no maker's name. Sup- pesed by a man about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, full round face, stout build, and dressed in grey mixture suit. Information to Mr. Supt. Description of THOMAS BATTY, under remand till 22rd instant, charged with Housebreaking at INautmawr, near Oswestry, Salop ;— 38 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, dark comp exion, black hair, very thick beard about 9 days' growth, several marks of injuries received in coalpits on body, aud blue mark on left wrist; dressed in old tweed jacket, old cotton cord trousers, old bouts, and old skull cap with peak of same material ; a native of Wigan, where he has been several times convicted of various offeuces. Wanted for burglary on the morning of 13th instant:— a Welshmau. about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. bi^ h, dark complexion, dark brown hair, bald on top of head, dark brown whiskers, no moustache, stout build ; dressed iu bard felt hat, grey cloth coat and vest, corduroy trousers, heavy nailed boots, with tips on the heels, a labourer, was last seen going in the direction of Stone, Staffordshire, on tbe morning of 13th instant. Description of two men wanted for housebreaking, at Binley, on 16th instant :— one about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy moustache; dressed in a round navvys slop, and hard felt hat ; the other about; 16 or 17 years of age, dressed in around navvys slop ( very dirty), was c. rrymg a flag basket, and looks like a country Jad. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING* Stolen from a field at Ashby- de- la- Zouch, between 5 am. on 17- th and 9 a. m. on 19th instant:— a chest- nut Russian gelding Pony, about 7 years old, 14 hands high, hog mane, long forelock, tail cut square ( has not been docked), a little white on forehead, scar a little above off knee, and one cn near knee ; has several scars along near side ( scarcely visible) from having been bitten by another horse ; rather low in the neck, and throws fore- feet round when trottiDg, and is in good condition. £ 5 reward will be p tid to any person giving such information as will lead to the recovery of the Pony, and conviction of the offender. The two Horses, r< ported stolen from a field at Eastbourne, Sussex, during the night of the 20th instant, advertised in Police Gazette of 22nd instant, have been found straying on the South Downs, about four miles from where they were missed, and have been restored to the owner. By a woman, age from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 teet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, very much pock pitted, large feat.-. res, dark hair, stout figure, supposed a laundress ; dressed in dark ulster, black har, trimmed with red and white flowers, and carrying a bundle of clothes. Stolen ou the 16th instant, at Eastbourne, Sussex :— a gold Watch, gold dial, a castle or tower engraved thereon, maker ' Tobyns, Liverpool'; a silver Albert Chain ; a gold Pin with crystal top, figure of a dog's head in crystal ; a black diagonal cloth Yest, and a pair of Boots with elastic sides. By a stableman, about 30 years of age, about ft feet 6 inches high, fallow complexion, dark brown hair and few whiskers at sides of face, rather stout figure ; dressed in black hard felt hat, black diagonal cloth morning coat, dark tweed trousers with lightish stripe or spots, white neckerchief, and supposed to be wearing the stolen vest and boots, as he left • his old one-, behind. Wanted on warrant, charged with embezzlement :— JOSEPH BREAK8PEAR. clerk, resided at 146, Clifton Road, Aston, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, light complexion, hair inclined to be sandy, clean face ; dressed when he left in pepper and salt mixture suit, and hard billycock. TOHNT HENRY MAR = 511, advertised in Police G. iz- lte of 20th instant, charged on warrant with embfzz'erae& t at Worthing. He has marks ou his throat which he, cur. at Woolwich some years ago, having attempted suicide, he either wears flannel or a high collar, to keep them from being seen. £ 25 rewaul will be paid by Mr. William Neats, the proprietor of the Brunswick Hotel, for the arrest and conviction of the above named. Information to Mr. Supt. Silvester, Police Station, WORTHING — Bow- street, August 24. Absconded on 18t, h instant, charged with stealing £ 27 in Gold :— LOUIS SCHULTZ, a barman, 19 years of age, 5 ft. 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, dark under eyes ; dressed iu dark coat and vest, blaek and white striped trousers, stand up collar, narrow black tie, black round felt hat; speaks German and English. Will probably endeavour to leave the couutry. Warrant issued. Absconded, charged with stealing £ 40 :— LAWRENCE LEf BERT, a German courier, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, hair, beard ( cut short), and moustache brown, and high forehead ; dressed iu black frock , coat, dark mixture trousers, and low black felt hat. Warrant issued. Absconded from Cafe Royal. Regent Street, W., charged with embezzlement: GEORGE CON R& D I, a waiter, 33 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, hair and whiskers light, and light eyes ; dressed in grey overcoat, b'ack trousers, round black felt fiat; supposed a Swiss. May seek employment as a waiter at some watering place. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, August 24. Absconded on Sui> d* v, ? 9th July last, stealing from a safe at the Central Post in this Borough, four Registered Letters, two of which contained 300 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, 150 numbered 78,451 to 78,600, and 150 numbered 80,801 to 80,950, all dated Birmingham, 29th May, 1882 :— WILLIAM GEORGE LINVELL, post office clerk, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches hiah, stout build, full face, no whiskers or moustache, fresh eori plexion, wears spectacles; dressed in dark clothes, billy- cock nat, and addicted to drink. It is expected that he will endeavour to change a quantity of the notes for cash and leave the country. He is ascertained to have purchased a dove- color melton cloth summer overcoat with a drab velvet collar, at a shop iu Woliwich, on July 30t, h, which he is no doubt wearing ; several of the notes have been found changed at post offices for stamps and postal orders. Police officers are requested to make all possible search and enquiry for this man at hotels, railway stations, and outgoing vessels, and advise all backs and post offices ; if found appre- hend and communictte with the undersigned, who holds the warrant for his apprehension. £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Postmaster General, and £ 50 by Lloyds' Banking Company, for the apprehension of the thief and recovery Of the property, or in proportion ' o the amount thereof. Has been a baker i n boaid ship, and has two ship certificates with which he endeavours to obtain employment. TAA MOUNTFORD, advertised in Police Gazette of 2nd Maich, 1883, as being wanted at Burslem for stealing- Pigeons, has been arrested and sentenced to 6 weeks imprison- ment. A. Hill, Chief Supt. BDRSLEM— Bow- street, August 24 Stolen from off a hedge at Same, Nantcwolle, Cardigan, about 4 p. m. 21st instant:— a broad striped home made flannel shirt, with white 1 orn buttons, the back was lined inside with brown calico, man's size, and nearly new. Sup- posed by a tramp about 6 feet 10 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark complexion, black hair and whiskers, and small black moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, black bowler hat, and lace- up boots', nearly new, without nails.
