All Noticos intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover addressed to the Inspector- General of Constabulary, authenticated by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will bo inserted. Should irregularities arise in tho delivery of tho Hue- and- Cry, it will be necessary to forward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this information it is almost impossible to rectify the mistake. DUBLIN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. £ 10 REWARD. WANTED at Chelmsford Essex, charged on warrant • vtltli obtaining credit from Frederick Marriage on 14th July, for one heifer and ten sheep by means of fraud, W. Hart, a cattlc dealer, Ac :— Aged 40 to 45, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark hair inclined to be gray, may have slight moustache and whiskers, pale com- plexion, full face, very thick neck, stout build, about 10 stono weight, of gentlemanly appearance and address, when last seen wa3 wearing suit of black clothes and black round felt hat; he sometimes wears a white straw hat with black band and suit of gray clothes, and in his necktie a silver pin, Masonic emblem, a compass surmounting a square with eye in centre. This man in May last took an office in Bank Buildings, Colchester, and represented by his cards that hi; was in partnership with one Willis, as a corn, seed, oil cake, coal, and manure merchant, " all kinds of live stock and implements supplied." He has drawn several cheques on the Central Bank of London, Charterhouse Buildings, which on being presented were dishonoured— some he signed W. Hart, others Hart and Willis. He was last seen at Bristol - Fuii' oil 19th July. ' It, is believed he is wanted in other places for similar frauds. 1 Likely to be known and found at cattle markets, fairs, Ac., or will attempt to leave the country. STOLEN from tho person of a gentleman at Farn- worth in Widnes Athlctic Sports, on Saturday, 21st July, 1883, a gold keyless lever demi hunting watch, No. 9,871, maker, " S. Goldstone, Manchester," gold dial, chapters and fingers; a gold Albert chain, long and short links alternately, had two short chains hanging from bar, with a locket made of two spade aco guineas attached to end of one chain, and a gold compass with white dial to end of the other chain. Ten pounds reward will be paid for such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and recovery of tho property. WHEREAS, the Coroner's Jury, on the 18th inst., found a verdict of wilful murder against Harry Hammond Swindells, for having, on the 16th inst., caused tho death of James Wild, by shooting him with a revolver. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person, other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who will give such information as shall load to the discovery of the Murderer. He is 49 years of age, 5 feet 3£ inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, moustache and beard American fashion, whiskers shaved off, dark blue eyes, Roman nose with blue mark on the bridge, high cheek bones, largo mouth, has only one or two teeth in upper jaw, scar on right side of neck, little finger of right hand crooked, walks with a swinging essed in a black ribbed double- breasted Islack back jacket ( the right shoulder and arm may beartraces ofiimewash), trowsers and vest material, new black soft billycock hat with n, new spring side boots with square toes ; • ly was steward in the service of the Allan working between Liverpool and New York ; own at the Liverpool docks; will no eavour to escape to America, ion to be given to the Chief Constable, , Oldham, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. DESCRIPTION of Richard Coultate, wanted by Warrant for embezzling £ 100, the moneys of his employers:— He is 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high fresh complexion, round full face, light- brown hair, moustache and side whiskers, shaved on chin, stout build, broad shoulders, walks very erect and with a quick step, speaks rather sharp; dressed when last seen in a black worsted morning coat and vest, and black billycock hat with broad brim. CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE. HOUSEBREAKING AND THEFT. WANTED on a Sheriff's Warrant for having, on 24tli July current, broken into a shut- up house in the west end of the city, by means of forcing a window on the ground floor, and stealing a large quantity of goods, all recovered, Robert Stirling, alias Johnston, alias Gillespie :— About 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark brown hair, bare face, fresh com plexion, peculiar look about eyes, which are weak, right arm rather stiff; dressed in dark gray tweed jacket suit and round felt hat; is a cabinet maker to trade, but has not wrought for along time:— Has been convicted several times before the Sheriff Court here, the last occasion being 9th August, 1882, when he was sentenced to 8 months' imprisonment for theft. Accused was arrested at the time by the Police, but after one night's detention in the lock- up made his escape, and as considerable interest is attached to the housebreaking, it is specially requested that officers will do their utmost in searching for accused, and to have him arrested. Information to A. M'CALL, Chief Constable. Glasgow, July 31, 1883. ( 26789 M.— 4942 1.) CITY OF GLASGOW POLICE. THEFT OF £ 108 9s. Id. - WANTED here, charged with the theft of £ 108 9s. Id., the property of Mr. J. D. M'Arthur, hozier and glover, 265, Sauchiehall- street, in whose employment he was as Cashier:— Patrick Valentine King, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair parted in centre, heavy reddish moustache, otherwise clean shaved, pale complexion, some pimples on nose and face, narrow chin, dressed in a dark worsted shooting coat, occasionally wears a light overcoat and black felt hat, a native of Ireland and speaks with slight Irish accent, resided in lodgings at 17, Tureen- street. Absconded with the money on Tuesday last, 10th July current, and believed to be making for Boston where he has got friends. Police Officers are requested to have the necessary search made for accused at hotels, shipping, and other likely places, and should he be ariftsted or traced, communicate with A. M'CALL, Chief Constable. Glasgow, July, 13, 1883. ( 26668 M.— 49215.) DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE. G Division. PARTICULARS relative to English Convict John M'Gowan, D 1189, convicted in Leicester, at Assizes, on 1st November, 1879, for manslaughter, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude:— 70 years of age on conviction, widower, is a labourer, born in Mayo, resided before conviction in Chapel- en- frith ; gray hair, light blue eyes, fresh complexion, round visage, short stout make, 5 feet 2f inches high, scar on crown, right side of chest, and right side of belly, large round scar on front of right shoulder, venesection marks on both arms. This man left London the 30th June, 1883, for Sligo, but he has not reported himself at the latter place, and his present whereabouts are unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 & 35 Vic., cap. 112. ( 26735 M.— 49325.) PARTICULARS relative to Convict John O'Brien, 10765, convicted at Fermoy, county Cork, at Trinity Sessions, on 1st July, 1878, for larceny from person and former conviction, and sentenced to seven years' penal servitude :— 23 years of age on conviction, is a Roman Catholic, married, is a dealer, horn in Clon- mel, resided before conviction in Barrack- street, Cork, his friends reside in Newmarket, Dublin ; dark brown hair, hazel eyes, dark brown eyebrows, small nose, regular mouth, sallow complexion, oval visage, average make, 5 feet 7 inches high, lost a front upper tooth, scars on head, three boil marks on right shin, bum mark on inside of left ankle, mark in left groin, scar on upper lip. This prisoner escaped from Lusk Prison at 9 30 A. M., on the 13th instant. , Notice.— A reward of from £ 3 to £ 5 may be paid to any person who may apprehend and deliver up a convict who shall have effected his escape from a Government Prison. Application to be made to the Governor of the Prison. By Act 19th and 20th Vic., cap. 68, sec. 32, it is provided that any person who shall by aDy means whatever, aid and assist any prisoner to escape, or in attempting to escape, shall be guilty of felony, and being convicted thereof, shall be kept in penal servi- tude for any term not less than 6 nor more than 8 years. PARTICULARS relative to convict Rachel Templeton, 2437, convicted in Armagh, county Armagh, on 13th July, 1878, for larceny, and sentsnccd to 7 years' penal servitude:— 40 years of age on conviction, is a Protestant, single, is an embroidress, born in Market- hill, resided before conviction in Armagh, her friends reside in Portadown ; brown hair, hazel eyes, light eyebrows, long nose, medium mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, slight make, burn mark on left cheek, 5 feet high. This convict was discharged from " The Shelter," Dublin, 18th April, 1883, on licence, and went to reside at Armagh. She left Portadown about the THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, DECEMBER 1 1 , 1883. 25th ultimo, without notifying her departure to the R. I. C., and her present whereabouts are unknown. DESCRIPTION of Bernard O'Hare, native of Newry, , who stands charged with having, on the 23rd July, 1883, in the barony of Upper Orier, parish of Newry, stabbed Patrick O'Hare, with a knife, and escaped from the escort when on his way to Bridewell, on remand:— Gray eyes, regular nose, fresh com- plexion, medium make, 5 feet T inches high, about 27 years of ago, brown hair, small thin side whiskers and moustache j wore a dttrk tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Arthur Hagan ( assault endangering life), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th April, 1883. Belfast. DESCRIPTION of Martin Robinson, native of Fair- view- street, Belfast, who stands charged with having, on the 31st of July, 1883, in the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, embezzled £ 7 10s., the proporty of James Anderson, his employer:— Wants right leg from knee down, brown eyes, regular nose, dark complexion, palo face, slight make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 22 or 23 years of age, black hair, small dark moustache; wore a dark coat, trowsers, and vest; is a clerk. Belfast, August 4, 1883. ( 58387 c.— 5723.) Cavan. DESCRIPTION of Michael Smith, native of Bruskey, who stands charged with having, at about nine o'clock P. M., on the 7th August, 1883, in the barony of Clon- niahon, parish of Ballintemple, feloniously stabbed Edward Smith on public road, near townland of Bruskey, thereby endangering his life :— Old cut- mark over ono eye, gray or blue eyes, long nose, dark freckled complexion, long face, medium make, 6 feet 5 or 0 inches high, about 27 years of age, dark hair; had side whiskers and moustache; had chin shaved. DESCRIPTION of Andrew Hehir, native of Corrofin, who stands charged with having, on the 27th June, 1883, in the barony of Islands, parish of Drumcliff, escaped from the gaol at Ennis, where he was in custody on a charge of prison breach :— Gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 6^ inches high, about 19 years of age, light brown hair; wore a soft jerry hat, old black tweed coat, gray trowsers, dark tweed vest, and military shirt; had no boots on when he left; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Edward M'Garrigle ( mother's surname M'Ginlay), native of Knather, who stands charged with having, on the 13th or morning of the 14tli of June, 1883, in the barony of Tirhugh, parish of Kilbarron, stolen two heifer calves, the property of John Donagher, of Dooballea :— Smart active appear- ance, broad forehead, high cheek bones, pleasing looking, mark of an old cut on the back of head with no hair on it but covered by hair drawn across it, brown eyes, small sharp pointed nose, fresh complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 27 years of age, brown hair; wore a hard jerry hat, heather- coloured pea jacket, brown tweed trowsers and vest; is a shoemaker. DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 8th of July, 1883, at Tuam, in the barony of Dunmore, parish of Tuam, stolen a jennet, the property of John Darcy, of Tuam, and offered it for sale on his way from Tuam to Williamstown, Galway, E. R, in which direction he then pro- ceeded:— Brown moustache and shaved chin, long face, slender make, 5 feet 0 inches high, about 30 years of age, brown hair; wore a hard jerry hat, blue pilot old frock coat, corduroy trowscrs, and moleskin vest; military highlow boots; is a tramp, looks like a tinker. Description of the jennet:—• A six- year- old male jennet, dark- brown colon• ilack mane and tail, a little grayish under the stftldle, small white spot on the off fore leg ( betw^ fc the knee and hoof), marked as if by a fall on botl^^ Bes; value for about £ 8. DESCRIPTION of James Hardy, nati^^ Bice unknown, who stands charged with havingj^^ Bthe 14th July, 1883, in the barony of Glenarough, parish of Kenmare, absconded with five watches given to him for repair, with a felonious intent of converting them to his own use : — Large drooping moustache, blue or gray eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet inches high, about 35 years of age, fair hair; wore a gray tweed coat, trowsers, and vest, rather worn ; is an itinerant watchmaker. Description of the watches :— 1. Silver lever watch, marked on centre of dial, Railway timepiece, supposed No. 21118, maker Sewel, Liverpool; value £ 4. 2. Silver watch, flint dial, No. unknown ; value £ 5. 3. Silver Geneva watch, No. 84357 ; value £ 3. 4. Gold watch, owner's name, Eliza O'Brien, scratched inside cover, No. unknown ; value £ 4 10.<-. 5. Silver watch, self- winding, No. unknown; value £ I. Kenmare, July 17, 1883. ( 59425 c.— 9776.) DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 15th May, 1883, absconded from the Rehoboth- place Reformatory School, at Dublin :— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout make, pale complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, slightly turned up nose, round visage, heavy brows; small mark of cut above right eye on forehead ; formerly belonged to Tralee, county Kerry, and his parents are dead. The school dress consists of cord trowsers, cord sleeved vest, blucher boots nailed, and fastened by strap and buckle; had no jacket on him when he left. This boy is very fond of the army, and may try to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. Garnett, which were stolen out of a box in liis residence at Loughbrown, barony of Connell, parish of Pollardstown, between the 2nd and 23rd instant:— 1. A silver cream jug, chased crest, castellated tower, had either three or four feet, about half an inch high. 2. An evening dress suit lined with silk ; value for about £ 9 ; would fit a man about five feet five inches higb. Kildare, July 28, 1883. ( 57909 c.— 7552.) DESCRIPTION of William Griffiths, native of London, who stands charged with having, on the 10th June, 1883, in the barony of East Offaly, parish of Bally- sax, obtained £ 9 under false pretences, by presentment of an unsigned cheque :— Hazel eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, smart active make, 5 feet 8 indies high, about 26 years of age; wore a jerry hat, dark brown frock coat, dark trowsers, and vest; is a private in the 1st East Kent Regiment. Myles Farrell ( assault), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 23rd March, 1883. Mathew Smith ( attempt to commit a rape), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th March, 1883. William Tegan ( attempt to commit a rape), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 16th March, 1883. The man, name and native place unknown, described in Hue- and- Cry of 13tii March, 1889^ ( intimidation), not arrested. Kilkenny. DESCRIPTION of a horse, the property of Bridget Murphy, which was . stolen from off the lands of Polrone, parish of Tullahaught, barony of Kells, on the night of the 2nd or morning of tho 3rd inst., viz. :— Pale chestnut colour, 3 year's old, face almost white, two hind fetlocks white, a little white on one fore leg at fetlock, about 15 hands high; value for about £ 40. ( 57940 c.— 7611.) Thomas Watson ( robbery of an ass, cart, and harness), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 3rd April, 1883. King's. Young offender John Rooney, described in last" Hue- and- Cry, has been arrested. Leitrim. DESCRIFTKIN of Michael Gearty native of Annagh, wbo stands charged with having, on the' 23rd July, 1883, at Annagh, in the barony of Carrigallen, parish of Carrigallen, seriously assaulted Eliza Lynch by striking her with a spade on the head, from the effects of which her life is in danger:— Large mouth, wide teeth, shaves his face, gray eyes regular- nose, fair complexion, regular face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 38 years of age, brown bair, wore a low black hat, black cloth coat, tweed trowsers and vest is a small farmer. DESCRIPTION of James Farrell, native ol Williams- town, county Westmeath, who stands charged with having, on the 2nd day of August, 188- 3, in the barony of Rathcline, parish of Kilcoimnick, in his possession an ass and cart, for which he cannot, satis- factorily account, and also had in his possession at same place ( but which he has since disposed of), an ass and cart supposed to be stolen from district of Delvin, county Westmeath ( see Hue- and- Cry of 27th July, 1883):— Paralysis on right side, lame of right leg, gray eyes, regular nose, red complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 40 years of age, brown hair; wore a brown round hat, an old gray tweed coat, tweed trowsers, old vest; is a tramp. This man lias been committed for eight days to iongford Gaol. Description of the ass and cart ;— 1. A small mare ass, gray colour, fair condition, shod on off fore foot, and near hind one, part of the hoofs on the other two feet a little broken ; value about £ 1 K's, 2. An old broken cart, large size for an ass, two new felloes in wheel on leading side, cart is of very little value. Ballymahon, August 2, 1883. ( 57930 c.— 7596.) Louth. Patrick Cosgrove ( junior), ( aggravated assault), has been arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 20 July, 1883. Mayo. James Ruddy ( assault endangering life), not ar- rested; Hue- and- Cry, 10th April, 1883. Edward Doocy and olin M'Intyre ( serious assault), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 2oth March, 1883. Michael M'Namara ( suspected of being one of an armed party who committed a murder), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 2nd March, 1883. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Hosey, native of Edenderry, who stands charged with having, on the 29th July, 1883, in the barony of Eune, parish of Killaconnigan, broken into tho dwelling- house of Michael Browne, of Donore, with intent to commit a felony therein :— () ld cut on upper lip and bridge <? f nose, gray eyes, flat nose, fair complexion, small face, slight make, b feet- 3 inches high, about 40 years of age, dark brown Lair; wore a hard black hat, tweed coat, light tweed trowscrs and vest; all the clothing much worn; is a tramping tailor. This man has been committed for trial to Trim Quarter Sessions, to be held on 13th November, 1883, and may have committed crimo elsewhere. Athboy, August 0, 1883. ( 57939 C.— 7610.) Margaret Walsh, described in Hue- and- Cry of 16th March, 1883, not yet found. Francis Kelly ( absconding when on bail to take his trial on a charge of attempt to commit a rape), npt arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 6th March, 1883. Queen's. DESCRIPTION of Edward Tobin ( mother's surname Ryan), native of Doonane, who stands charged with having, o^ the 31st July, 1883, at Clonbrock, in the barony of Sleevemargry, parish of Killabban, seriously assaulted John Mulhall, by striking him with an iron bar on the head, from tho effects of which his life is in danger:— hazel eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, medium make, 5 feet 0 inches high, about 18 years of age; wore a soft hat, dark tweed coat, corduroy trowsers, and dark tweed vest; is a miner. DESCRIPTION of John Hart, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 1 Oth July, 1883, in the barony of Clondonagh, parish of Rath- downey, attempted to pick pockets.
