DESCRIPTION of Harry Hammond Swindells, who is charged with the wilful murder of James Wild, by shooting him with a revolver at 12 50 noon this day; also by tho same means with wounding his ( Swindells') wife:— He is 49 years of age, 5 feet 3^ inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, moustache and beard American fashion, whiskers shavod off, dark blue oyes, Boman nose, high cheek bones, largo mouth, has only one or two teeth in upper jaw, walks with a swinging gait; dressed in a black ribbed double- breasted worsted slack back jacket ( tho right shoulder and arm of which may bear traces of limewash), trowsers and vest of same material, now black soft billycock hat with large brim, new spring sido boots with squaro toes ; ho formerly was steward in the service of the Allan Lino Co., working between Liverpool and New York; is well known at the Liverpool docks; will no doubt endeavour to escapo to America. DESCRIPTION of Charles Jager, a bank clerk, late of 34, Darvillc- road, Stoke Newington, who absconded on 19th ult., and whose arrest is sought on a Warrant for stealing a cheque, the property of his employers;— Age 21, height 5 feet 10 or 11 inches, slim, com- plexion frosh, sharp features, large nose, hair brown ( cut short and parted over left temple), no whiskers, slight fair moustache, eyos gray or hazel; dress, when last seen, gray suit and very low hard felt hat; gold tie pin, shapo of a horse- shoe, with whip through it, lash absent. He is of horsey appearance and frequents billiard rooms and tho company of betting men, and is* well- known at the houses they frequent; supposed accompanied by a female, age 20, height 5 feet 2 inches; complexion, hair ( cut short behind) and eyes dark; blue dress, waistband with large horse- shoo buckle; black silk hat. They left No. 10, Guildford- street, Russell- square, on the morning of 19th ult., in two Hansom cabs with portmanteau each, the female taking away another portmanteau in a four- wheel cab same evening. Tho above reward will be paid by Messrs. Munns and Longdon, 8, Old Jewry, London, E. C., to any person who shall givo information leading to Jager's apprehension. WANTED, by Warrant for fraud, Henry George Hayes :— Age about 38 years, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender build, palo complexion, thin sharp features and hps, dark brown bjp*% hin shaved, small whiskers, haggard or careworn appearance, and of gentlemanly address; stated th » t he was a butter merchant from London commencing business in this city. He presented himself at the Consolidated Bank, Limited, King- street, Manchester, on the 26th May last, and requested to be allowed to open an account, at the same time depositing £ 50 in cash, and two bank cheques, one for £ 96 12s. on Lloyd's Banking Company, Limited, Wolverhampton, and the other on Stamford, Spalding, and Boston Banking Company, Northampton, for £ 83 10s. 6d. The cheques are found on inquiry to be worthless. He also gave references in Manchester which were found to be false. He thereby obtained a cheque book on the Consolidated Bank, numbered 892,571 to 892,600, which he will no doubt use to commit other frauds. Police Officers are requested to give immediate information to bankers, money changers, and others, and should any of the cheques be presented, to forward information without delay. The above reward of £ 10 will be given by the Directors of the bank for such information as will lead to the arrest of the said Henry George Hayes. M., May $ 6th, and 11 A. M., May 27th, 1883, a pawn shop in the borough of Dudley was entered from an adjoining void house, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz.:—• Five silver Geneva watches, Nos. 66, 99, 842, 18296, and 28355. Twenty- three old metal Verge watches, Nos. 16, 345, 445, 477, 549, 683, 820, 889, 2415, 2591, 3720, 4779, 4944, 6355, 6522, 8231, 8382, 9558, 12931, 17232, and three not numbered. One old silver Verge watch, not numbered, has a name on outside oase. One pair of plain silver sleeve links. One suit of men's black worsted cord clothes, rather broad cord, bound with braid, new, size 3. One pair of course black cloth trowsers, fall fronts, lined with swansdown, size 5. One single- breasted vest, dark gray and white, coarse tweed, and five new silkneckerchiefs, plaid patterns, of various colours; Further Particulars. Early in the morning following the above robbery, two men were seen to secrete a basket in an ash mount at Deepfields, which upon being examined was found to contain 57 of the watches and some other portions of the stolen property. One of the men— stout, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches in height, sandy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in soft billycock hat, short black jacket, and dark trowsers; had the appearance of a labourer. The other man not so stout as the above, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches in height, dark moustache; dressed in a short dark coat and hard square topped hat. M'Arthur, hozier and glover, 265, Sauchiehall- street, in whose employment he was as Cashier:— Patrick Valentine King, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair parted in centre, heavy reddish moustache, otherwise clean shaved, pale complexion, some pimples on nose and face, narrow chin, dressed in a dark worsted shooting coat, occasionally wears a light overcoat and blaick felt hat, a native of Ireland and speaks with slight Irish accent, resided in lodgings at 17, Tureen- street. Absconded with the money oh Tuesday last, 10th July current, and believed to be making for Boston where he has got friends. WHEREAS, since the 25th May last, twenty- nine forged or fabricated notes, purporting to be £ 1 notes of the Royal Bank of Scotland, have been uttered in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, the above reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Directors of the Royal Bank of Scotland to the person who will furnish the subscriber, or any officer of Police, with such infor- mation as will lead to the apprehension and convic- tion of the person or persons concerned in the forging and uttering of the said notes, and to the recovery of the plate from which they had been printed. Description of forged notes :— The forged notes are all numbered MgJ, and dated 1st July, 1882, and have the words " Promise to pay to James Wright or the Bearer" engraved on the body THE POLICE GAZETTE. OR HUE- AND- CRY, JULY 24, 1883. of them, whereas all the genuine Royal Bank notes issued since 1874 have only the words " Promise to pay on demand to the Bearer," and the name '' James Wright' omitted. The plate from which the forged notes have been printed has borne the words " Engraved on steel by W. H. Lizars, Edinburgh." Description of a man who passed several of the forged notes in shops in the Eastern District of Glasgow:— A man, from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark brown hair, bare face, which is red and blotched, very small nose, and stout made; dressed in a black shabby frock coat bound with very broad black braid, and black satin hat. Had a dissipated and broken- down appearance, and spoke with a Scotch accent. Bankers, engravers, lithographers, shopkeepers, police officers, and others are requested to be on the alert, and should any clue or information be obtained, to communicato with tho subscriber, or with the local police, at the nearest police station. PARTICULARS relative to convict Rachel Tompleton, 2437, convicted in Armagh, county Armagh, on 13th July, 1878, for larceny, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude:— 40 years of age on conviction, is a Protestant, singlo, is an embroidress, born in Market- hill, resided before conviction in Armagh, her friends reside in Portadown ; brown hair, hazel eyes, light eyebrows,, long nose, medium mouth, fresh com- plexion, round visage, slight make, burn mark on iuft cheek, 5 feet high. This convict was discharged from " The Shelter," Dublin, 18th April, 1883, on licence, and went to reside at Armagh. She left Portadown about the 25th ultimo, without notifying her departure to the K. I. C, and her present whereabouts are unknown. Dublin. 5 DESCRIPTION of clothing, < fec., found in possession of convict Mary Egan ( who has been arrested and returned for trial at tho Commission Court, Dublin, on a Charge of felony) and which are supposed to have been stolen, viz.:— A Paisley shawl, somewhat worn; a black cloth lady's jacket, loose make, trimmed round the neck and sleeves with black fringe; a lady's skirt, half of it red calico, the lower half red silk; a lady's black Cashmere skirt, frilled at bottom ; a small calico chemise ; a lady's pair of high buttoned boots, with a small patch on the outside of each ; a pair of men's elastic side boots, new ; two pair of lady's stockings, one red, the other gray with blue stripe. This woman was returned for trial at the Commission on the 7th instant, and the case adjourned to next Commission. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 15th May, 1883, absconded from the Rehoboth- place Reformatory School, at Dublin s— Thomas Johnston, No. 204, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout make, pale complexion, fair hair, gray eyes, slightly turned up nose, round visage, heavy brows; small mark of cut above right eye on forehead; formerly belonged to Tralee, county Kerry, and his parents are dead. The school dress consists of cord trowsers, cord sleeved vest, blucher boots nailed, and fastened by strap and buckle; had no jacket on him when he left. This boy is very fond of the army, and may try to enlist. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of Michael Cahill ( mother's surname Shanahan), native of Foylenamon, who stands charged with having, on the 24th May, 1883, at Borrisoleigh, in the barony of Kilnamanagh Upper, parish of Glenkeen, seriously assaulted Laurence Ryan, by striking him on the head with a stone, from the effects of which he died on the 7th June, 1883 :— Shaves all his face except small whiskers under the ears ; gray eyes, regular nose, fresh com- plexion, broad fat face, stout make, about 5 feet 9 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark brown hair; wore a slouched hat, dark frieze coat, dark gray tweed trowsers, and gray. tweed vest; is a farmer's son. DESCRIPTION of a man, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 31st day of May, 1883, in the barony of Moyashel and Magheradernon, parish of Mullingar, stolen from the house of Mr. Cramer Roberts, Taitestown, several articles of silver plate ( see Hue- and- Cry of 5th instant), all of which have since been re- covered :— Down- looking and ill- looking, slightly stooped shoulders, stout make ; 5 feet 7 inches high, about 50 years of age; wore a soft hat, old faded tweed coat, and black troswers. DESCRIPTION of Charles M'Dermott native of Strabane, who stands charged with having, on the 16th April, 1883, in the barony of Upper Strabane, parish of Upper Badoney, obtained a heifer by false pretences, and afterwards . selling same in the fair of Plumbridge, and absconding with the amount:— Three warts under right ear adjoining cheek bone, the result of evil, shuffling swaggering gait when walking ; large wild gray eyes, regular nose, pale yellow com- plexion, long face, medium make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 30 or 33 years of age, dark hair, shaves all his face; wore a milky white hat, brown coat, trowsers, and vest, greasy looking and shabby; is a low cattle dealer. DESCRIPTION of Thomas Washington, native of Old Ross, who stands charged with having, on the 21 st day of May, 1883, in the barony of Bantry, parish of Old Ross, committed a rape upon Mary Jane Whitney, of Old Ross :— Supposed to have cut marks on face, blue eyes, regular nose flat at top, sandy complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 30 years of age, sandy hair; is a labourer.
