No. 6900 THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1883. notice.— It it requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Sljgiiatusre of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that in information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article m the POLICE GAZETTE, al! (. letters addressed to the Editor mmt be prepaid* Otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Armti, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. . Advertisements offering rewards must state cioarly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. Wanted at Stirling on a charge of Rape and Murder, committed near Lennoxtown, between the night of 17th and the morning of 18th instant .— JAMES BROWN, a navvy, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, stoops a little, grey hair cut short, whiskers and moustache shaved off: dressed in an old pilot jacket, moleskin trousers and vest, much worn, brown tweed cap, new tacketted boots ( pur- chased on 17th instant). The accused has been employed at the Kirkintilloch Waterworks. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, STIRLING.— Bow- St., March 21. FORGERY. Wanted on a warrant, for forgery :— ELIZABETH STANFIELD, otherwise HOLE, of Bath, 66 years of age, short, very stout build, and has several moles on face. And HARRIETT ELLIS, of Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, about 60 years of age, short, rather stout build. Would both be dressed in mourning. They are sisters ; Mrs. Ellis has two daughters ( Hannah and Harriett), nurses at the Fever Hospital, Liverpool- road, Islington. Information to Col. R. T. Gwyn, Chief Constable, BATH. — Bow-, March 21. Wanted at Glasgow on a Sheriff's warrant, charged with forgery:— JOHN SMILLIE, lately a tea merchant in Waterloo Street, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, moustache and whiskers, no beard, full round face, fresh complexion, and slender make ; dressed generally in a blue cloth jacket suit, and felt hat; speaks with Scotch accent. Absconded about the end of December last; seen in London since then. Information to the Chief Constable, GLASGOW.— Bow- street, March 19. Charged with forgery :— WILLIAM& ROSS, of Sandford, Oxen, 191 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches higb, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, scar on left hand, is a deserter from 6th Dragoons, Canterbury ; has in his possession a Cheque Book, Gillett and Co., bankers, Woodstock; is passing cheques in the name of Thomas Curm; was seen in Hay- market, London, on 9th instant, dressed in a black suit of clothes. Information to Inspector Hawkin, WOODSTOCK, Oxen.— Bom- street, March 16. Wanted on warrant, for forgery :— JOHN HORTON, a clerk, 37 years of age, 5 feet 5 iuehes high, light brown hair, moustache, and hide whiskers, chin shaved, light complexion, rather pale, slender build, sometimes w « ars spectacles, polite and gentlemauly iu his manner and address, third linger ou right hand swollen and disfigured ; supposed to be wearing a dark pepper- and- salt coloured suit ; he absconded ou 3rd instant, and had with him a black leather portmanteau and a black leather dressing case, and is supposed to have a con siderable amount of money in gold in his possession. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Chief Constable of Man Chester, for such information as will lead to the apprehension of the said Johu Horton, and 5 per cent, upon amount, of moneys recovered, on behalf of the firm defrauded. Stolen from the person, at Withiugton, oa 15th instant : — a brown leather Purse, fastens with a button in the middle, contained one Half- Sovereign and one Half- Crown. Stolen from the person at Atherstone, on 19th instant during the time the procession of Sanger's Circus was pass- ing :— a gent's open face gold lever Watch, No. 12280, 14 size, Coventry make, engine- turned case, enamelled dial, gold hands, jewelled in 6 holes, sunk seconds, compensation balance, with the initials ' W. Stolen from the person at the Midland Railway StatioD, Derby, about 6' 30 p m, on 16lh instant :— a gent.' s gold key- less Lever Stop W atch, No. 27579, crystal case face, centre seconds, chronometer balance, maker's nareer ' J. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Heaton Chapel, during the absence of the family, between 3 and 9 45 p. m. 17th inst.: — a dark brown sealskin Jacket, lined with brown qnilted satin, two pockets inside at the front; and a square dark calfskin Purse, steel clasps all round, gold pocket inside and two open ones. £ 2 reward will be paid by the owner for the rtcovery of the property and the apprehension of the thief or thieves'. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, near Manchester.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen by means of burglary on 15th instant, at Hill Top, West Bromwich :— a pair of men's block front Boots, size 7, part worn, meided on one sole, elastic in one boot shorter than the other, and has been sewn by hand ; a man's old check Oxford Shir;, which has been newly sleeved with a blue material; a Turkey red Handkerchief, and a long wool knitted Muffler. By a man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout build, no beard or whiskers, fresh red face ; dressed in dark ; loth cap with peak, black jacket, mole- skin trousers and vest, and had the appearance of a navvy. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, WEDNESBURY, or to Sergeant George Given, HILL TOP, West Bromwich.— Bow- street, March 21. Description of two men, wanted at Old Trafford, for attempting to break into a house at Gorton, on 11th instant: — first about 40 yesrs of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sandy whiskers, stout buik ; dressed in black tweed frock coat, and black billycock hat: second about 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slencbr build ; dressed in dark tweed suit, coat has two pockets at the side ; they can both be identified. Stolen between 14th and 15th instant, from the workshop of the Philanthopic Farm School, Redhill, Surrey, by means of breaking intothe shop :— three hair whitewash Brushes, nearly new, one > f them has been split through the handle, and a pioce of zinc has been tacked on each side of the rod of the handle. Farther information of housebreaking at East Grinstead on 4th instant :— the gold Albert Chain has beeu found, sold at Aldershot on 6th instant, by GEORGE TURNER, about 40 years of age, 5 feet If) or 11 iuclies high, dark complexion, very sullen aud evil- looking, very - dark hair, small moustache, small side whiskers, medium figure, and walks very erect: dressed in blue pilot coat, cord trousers with flap fronts, cord vest, rather high crowned felt hat, and bad boots, supposed cut down fronts to ease toes ; stated he was a pensioner from the Guards in receipt of 2*. 3d. a day, and that his late brother was schoolmaster in 23rd Foot. F.' in black paint on side ; also 2 very small Lambs. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston, Police Office, BUIERLEY HILL, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen from a field at Midsomer Norton, on the night of 12th instant :— a dark bay maie Pony, about 13 hands high, age 4 years off, short tail, rough coat, a little white on one hind foot. CHARLES ROGERS, late of Usk, watchmaker, adver- tised in Police G? zette of 19th instant, for larceny as bailee, has been apprehended at Cheltenham,— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen at Longsight, between 3 p. m. and 4 p. m. on 14th instant :— a blue, white and red striped cotton Shirt, new sleeves of same material, far worn. By a man, about 24 yrs. of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, slight whiskers and moustache ; dressed in long black cloth over- coat, dark trousers, and round pot hat. Information to the County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester. — Boio- street, March 21. Absconded from Biggleswade on 16th instant, charged with stealing a lady's gold Watch, and 3 gentlemen's silver Watches, with which he had been entrusted to repair:— a German, who gave the name of E. MEILLER, from 45 to 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and complexion, grey eyes ( very full), light brown hair ( turning grey). Information to Mr. Supt. Bedlow, Beds Constabulary, BIGGLESWADE, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, March 21. Description of GWEN JONES, who absconded from Llanwddyn Water Works, charged with stealing a new black alpaca Dress, and a marone jacket Bodice :— she is about 45 years of age, stout and full face ; dressed when she left in dark blue cress, black jacket, sealskin hat. She left Llan- fyllin on 13th instant, in company with her husbaDd, Edward Jones, labourer, and four children : a boy, 18 years of age ; a girl, 15; a boy, 7 ; and a boy, 5. They had with them boxes, bedding, and a mangle ; they booked to Llanidloes, and stated they were going to Penarth, near Cardiff. In- formation to P. C. N. Edwards, LLANFTLLIN, who holds a warrant for her apprehension ; or to Mr. Supt. Ellis, WELSH- POOL, Montgomeryshire.— Boio- street, March 21. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Burton- on- Trent:— a pair of blue and black striped tweed Trousers, fl/ fronts, brass button, engraved ' W. Jones,' with pockets ; a black ribbed cloth Vest, cloth buttons, usual pockets; and a gold Albert Chain, long link pattern, geld Locket attached, con- taining two photographs. Supposed by a man ( who lodged in the house one night) about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 ins, high, light complexion, grey hair, medium build ; dressed in dark cloth suit, shabby billycock hat, and blucher boots; stated he was a fitter, and came from Nottingham, and is suffering from an attack of bronchitis. Information to Mr. Supt. James Gilbride, BURTON- ON- TRENT.— Bow- st., March 21. Charged under a warrant with larceny, as bailee of a silver verge Watch, No. 7557, on 25th January last, the cases recovered, but the works still missing: — WILLIAM SCOTT, a travelling clock and watch maker, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, hair, whiskers and moustache nearly white, fresh complexion, lost right leg, and has a wooden leg; dressed in a long black coat, white vest, and dark trousers, and carries a black leather bag in which are his tools. Description of ERNEST RICE, alias GEORGE RICE, charged with larceny of a man'} brown tweed sack Jacket, single breasted, buttons to match, brown Italian and striped lining in back and sleeves respectively, pockets on hips, do. ticket, with flaps, and do. outside left breast, no flap; a black worsted Vest, single breasted, bound with black braid; and a pair of Trousers, fancy brown check pattern, fly fronts, and twill lining, all new, at Tunstall, on 12th instant : - he is a 2 P O L I C E GAZ ETTE March 16 tailor, 23 years of age, 5 feet & inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, full eyes, slender build, skin disease in hands, walks erect, native of Worcesl er ; dressed in black hard felt hat, long brown overcoat, sleeves have been lengthened, brown tweed trousers, seated, and repaii ed at bottoms, and low! shoes. The other, about 18 years of age, 5 feet, 7 or 8 inches high, slight build, dark hair, pale thin face; dressed iu daik felt hat, dark j icket and trousers. Bath of respectable appearance. Absconded on 14t, h instant, charged with stealing £ 15: — ROBERT MOORE, a native of Yarm, Yorkshire, 46 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slender made, fresh complexion, thin face, rather sunburnt, light sandy hair and heavy moustache, walks a little lame and hangs his head when walking ; dressed in long dark overcoat, supposed blue, torn iu two or three places behind shoulders, old pepper and salt coloured trousers, white muffler, and Scotch cap with peak ; is a dock labourer aud of riruukpn habits. Stolen on 13th instant;— a silver Geneva Watch, open face, No 2725, and a silver snake Chain, with key attached chain repaired with a steel ring. By a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout made, ludit complexion, tuft of hair ou chic, shaved at sides of face ; dressed in round fur cap, dark grey jacket, light vest, cord trousers aim laced boots. Description of HENRY GRONINETT, tramping watchmaker, wanted on warrant, charged with larceny :— 35 years of age, 5 feet high, crippled with one leg, supposed right, goes with crutch and stick, round shouldered, brown hair, bald on crown of head, no whiskers, heavy moustache, and small tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in blue pilot coat, brown trousers, deer- stalker bat, all much worn. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Jeffrey, BP. OM. SCP. QVE.— Bow- it., March 16. Wanted on a warrant, charged with embezzling 10s. 8d., on 6th instant, at Hastings :— HENRY W. SAUNDERS, a potter, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers and moustache, slight build, long thin face ; dressed in dark cloth coat, cord trousers, and black round hard felt hat; has been in the Metropolitan Police. Information to Mr. Glenister, Chief Superintendent, HASTINGS.— Bow street, March 16. Stolen at Penkridge, between 9th and 12th instant :— a pair of Trousers, grey and black striped cloth, to fit a youth about 18, much worn about the bottoms, have been reseated and repaired in the fork. Supposed by a tramping cadger, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, very dark and dirty appearance ; wore a olack jacket ami hard hat. Absconded from Messina, Sicily, on 26th November, 1881, charged on a warrant issued at the Mansion House, in the city of London, with frard and embezz'ement :— LEWIS REYNOLDS, 32 years of age, 5 feet 4 to 5 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair ( inclined to curl), square shoulders, feminine voice, sneaks through his teeth; his brother resides at Liverpool, at the firm of l/ yon & Reynolds, Accountants, Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, OLD JEWRY, London, E. C.— Bow- street, March 16. Absconded on 14th instant, charged with stealing £ 15 : — a man, 46 years of age, but looks younger, 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, slender made, fresh complexion, thin face, rather sun- burnt, light sandy hair, and heavy moustache, walks a little lame, and hangs his head forward when walking; was dressed in long dark overcoat, supposed blue, torn in { two or three places behind shoulderB, old pepper - and - salt coloured trousers, white muffler, and Scotch cap, with peak ; s a dock labourer, and of drunken habits. Supposed by a tramping ; labourer, about 30 years of age. 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sandy or light hair, little or no whiskers. Information to Inspector George Ward, BARTON- ON- HUMBEB, Lincolnshire.— Eow- st., March 16. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of HENRY WILSON, alias HENRY HALL, wanted for obtaining money under false pretences by representing himself as gamekeeper to Lord Scarsdale, having valuable dogs for sale. He is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout baild, dark complexion, believed pockmarked, dark whiskers and moustache, going grey; dressed in dirty dark clothes, black felt hat, leather leggings ; has a downcast look. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, GLOUCESTER, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- sV e- t. MarJt i). Wanted at Astcn, charged oil warrant with obtaining 3*. Id in Postage Stamps on 11th instant:— CHARLES NEWTON, 4( 1 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, light browu hair, whiskers ai> d moustache, walks with a slouching gait and very BIOW ; dressed in light overcoat, black trousers, high silk hat, carries a Bilk umbrella and black bag. He- inserted a lvertisements iu the Birming- ham daily papers and Stafford shire Advertiser for carpenters, bricklayers, masons, plasterers, plumbers, & c., and on applica tions being made he lequests a deposit of 3d. in stamps. By 1 hvse means he has obtained stamps from several persons. Fie was traced to 41, Hertford Road, Coveufry, where he had been staying for a few days, and left on 14tli instant,. Wanted under Warrant at Newbury, for obtaining £ 5 by false pretences at Speen on 10th instant: — EDWARD REES, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light hair cut: close, sallow complexion, scar on one cheeK ( supposed the right), lesembling a burn or scald, prominent chin, draws his mouth a little ou one wide when talking, very bow- legged ; dreSsed in snuff- coloured top coat with two holes worn behind, ion n't baid black felr, hat, and lace- up boots.
