' orward one of the covers, or give the number it bears, as without this. DUBLIN, TUESDAY MARCH 6, 1883. ENGLISH POLICE. WILFUL MURDER. £ 50 REWARD. WHEREAS, the dead body of a newly- born female child was found in a privy at Belle Vue Gardens, Gorton, on the 2nd inst,, and at a Coroner's inquest, held on the oth inst., a verdict of wilful murder was returned against some person or persons unknown: This is to give notice that the above reward of £ 50 will bo paid by Iler Majesty's Government to any person other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such infor- mation and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the Murderer or Murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious^ pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Lancashire, Preston; to Mr. Superintendent BENT, County Police Ollice, Old Trafford, near Manchester ; or at any Police Station of the county of Lancaster. County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester, February 12,1883. ( 25871 M 47694.) £ 100 REWARD. WILFUL MURDER. WHEREAS, Thomas Earlam was found murdered in liis house at Smallwood, in the county of Chester, on the 9th of February inst., supposed by a man known as " Patrick Carey," alias John White, < fcc., & c., who has tramped under the name of Jack or John, and will now in all probability assume another name: he is of the following description, viz.:— About 35 or 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, tanned complexion, no whiskers or moustache, slightly pockpitted ; wore a hard brown felt hat, long blue pilot cloth overcoat, corduroy trowsers patched on right knee with light cord, also at the bottom. The following property has been stolen from the house, viz.:— A suit of men's clothes, of blue- black worsted cloth, slightly ribbed, nearly new; and a Post Office Savings Bank book, belonging to a lodger named Edward Sampey, wrapped up in a Paisley handkerchief. This is to give notice that the above reward of One Hundred Pounds will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person other than a person belonging to a Police force, in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a liko result. OF GLASGOW POLICE. £ 500 REWARD. WHEREAS, about ten o'clock on the night of Saturday, 20th January last, a gasometer in the " Tradeston Gas Works was injured by the application of some explosive substance, to the danger of the lives of the lieges, and the serious destruction of property; and, whereas, it has now been ascertained that the said explosive substance was maliciously and wilfully applied by some person or persons at present unknown, the Lord Provost and Magistrates hereby offer a reward of £ 500 to any. person who will furnish the subscriber with such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons by whom such explosive substance was applied. The Lord Provost and Magistrates have been authorized by the Crown Authorities to state that no proceedings will be taken against any informer who was not an actual perpetrator of the crime. A. The bill, dated 27th January, 1883, offering a reward of £ 100 in connexion with this matter, is hereby withdrawn. BENJAMIN TAYLOR, gamekeeper, Doonside, near Ayr, has been amissing since Friday, 26th ult., on which day he was in Ayr transacting business and paying accounts. He had about £ 25 in bank notes on him, anda gold lever watch ( No. 18,024), attached thereto a strong Albert silver chain. He was seen in Ayr about 7.30 p. sc. of said date, since which he has not been seen or heard of:— He is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches or thereby in height, proportional make, auburn curly hair, full beard and whiskers all round, scar on left side of head, above left temple. Dress— Dark tweed jacket, vest, and trowsers, round black felt hat, and elastic- side boots. In case he may have met with foul play, I will feel obliged if you will be so good as to instruct your officers to search for said watch, and, if any trace found, communicate with D. A PROCLAMATION By the Lord Lieutenant- General and General Governor of Ireland. SPENCER. WHEREAS by our Proclamation, dated the 9th Mayt 1882, We offered a reward of Ten Thousand Pounds to any person or persons who should, within a limited time therein specified, give such information as would lead to the conviction of the Murderers of Lord Frederick Cavendish, the Chief Secretary, and Thomas Henry Burke, Esquire, the Under Secretaiy to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, on the 6th, May, 1882: And whereas the time therein specified for giving such information has expired : Now We, the Lord Lieutenant- General and General Governor of Ireland, are pleased to renew the said offer, and We do hereby offer a reward of TEN THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING to any person or persons who, within six months from the date hereof, shall give such information as will lead to the conviction of any of the Murderers : And a further reward of FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS for such private information as shall, within the same period, lead to the same result: AND whereas it is known that four perpetrators of these Murders escaped from the scene on an outside car which was driven away by a fifth person : Now We are also pleased hereby to offer to any person concerned in or privy to these Murders ( not being one of the above- mentioned four Murderers) who shall, within three months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the conviction of any one of the said four Murderers, a FREE PARDON and the special protection of the Crown in any part of Her Majesty's Dominions, in addition to a reward of FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS. And We are further pleased to offer a reward of ONE THOUSAND POUNDS to any such person concerned in or privy to these Murders, who shall, within the said last- mentioned period, give such private information as shall lead to the conviction of any one of the said four Murderers, or of any other person concerned in or privy to thev Murders. AND We are further pleased hereby to offer- a reward of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS for such private information as shall lead to the identification of any person concerned in or privy to the Murders, or of the horse and car used on the occasion, such last- mentioned reward of Five Hundred Pounds to be paid upon the information being corroborated to Our satisfaction by other information in Our possession, even though no person should be made amenable to justice as a result thereof. And We hereby promise that every effort shall be made to insure that the name or names of any person or persons who may become entitled to any of the said rewards for private information shall not be disclosed or made public, and that the said reward shall be paid in any manner in which such person shall desire Any person having any information to give, may communicate it to the Assistant Under Secretary for Police and Crime, Dublin Castle, to the Superinten- dent of the Detective Department of the Dublin Metropolitan Police, Dublin Castle, or to any other Government official in Great Britain or Ireland. Given at Dublin Castle, this 10th day of November, 1882. DESCRIPTION of the four men, wanted for the murder of Lord F. Cavendish and Mr. Burke, the Chief and Under Secretaries for Ireland, in the Phoenix Park, on Saturday, 6th May, 1882, between 7 and 8 P. M.: 1. About 35 years old, stout make, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache recently clipped, so as to give a bristling appearance, narrow forehead, natural hollow or dinge on bridge of nose; wore a soft black jerry hat and dark clothes. 2. About 30 years, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache ; brown faded coat, as if much exposed to sun, soft black jerry hat. 3. About 20 years, small dark moustache, no whiskers ; soft black hat and dark clothes. 4. About 30 years, sandy hair and moustache, beard on chin ; wore dark clothes and soft black hat. The height cannot be given of any, all being sitting on an outside car, driven by a man between 35 and 40 years, red bloated face, with a few days' growth of beard on; dark or brown coat, supposed frieze, and low soft black hat. The horse was a bay or chestnut, of good action, and the car had either a dark green or a red panel. The men had the appearance of sailors or well- to- do artisans.— JOHN MALLON, Superintendent. Field, of Westmoreland street, in this city, was, on the evening of the 27tli November instant, about six O'CLOCK, at " Ndrth Frederick- street, in this city, feloniously and malici- ously stabbed and wounded by some person or persons, who immediately afterwards got on an out- side car which was waiting in Hardwicke- street, and drove off rapidly through Hardwicke- place : Now, We, John Poyntz, Earl Spencer, Lord Lieutenant- General and General- Governor of Ire- land, for tho better apprehending and bringing to justice the offenders and their accomplices, hereby offer a reward of FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS to any person or persons who, within three months from tho date hereof, shall give such information as will lead to the conviction of the said offenders or their accomplices, or any of them. And a further reward of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS for such private information as shall, within the said poriod, lead to the same result. And We hereby promise that every effort shall be made to insure that the name or names of any person or persons who may become entitled to the said reward for private information shall not be disclosed or' runde public, and that the said reward shall be paid in any manner in which such person shall desire. Any person having any information to give, may communicate it to the Assistant Under Secretary for Police and Crime, Dublin Castle, to the Super- intendent of tho Detective Department of the Dublin Metropolitan Police, Dublin Castle, or to any other Government official in Great Britain or Ireland. ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY. Belfast. Elizabeth Anne Rice, native of 56, Abyssinia- street, Belfast, who left her home on the 17th Octo- ber, 1882, has not returned thereto. Cavan. Thomas Kemp, who has been missing since the 3th of last December, and was described in the Huo- and- Cry of the 30th of January, 1883, has not as yet turned up. Clare. DUBLIN CASTLE, 6th December, 1882. WHEREAS by Proclamation dated the 2nd February, 1882, His Excellency offered a reward of Five Hundred Pounds to any person or persons who should, within a limited time therein specified, give such information as wonld lead to the conviction of the person or porsons who committed the Murder of John Lennane, of Breffa South, near Miltown Malbay, in tho county of Clare on the night of the 24th January, 1882 : And whereas the time therein specified for giving such information has expired : And His Excellency is pleased to renew the said offer, and doth hereby offer a reward of ONE THOUSAND POUNDS to any person or persons who, within six months from tho date hereof, shall give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the person or persons who committed this Murder. His Excellency is also pleased to offer to any person concerned in, or privy to the said Murder, other than the person or persons whs actually Committed the same, in case of his giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the person or porsons, or any of them, concerned in this Murdor, a FREE PARDON and the special protection of llie Grown in any part of Her Majesty's Dominions, in addition to a reward of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS. And His Excollency is further pleased to offer a reward of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS for such private information as shall lead to the identification of any person concerned in or privy to ; Ennistymon, the Murder, such last- mentioned reward of One Hundred Pounds to be paid upon the information being corroborated to His Excellency's satisfaction by. other information in His Excellency's possession, even though no person should be made amenable to justice as a result thereof. And His Excellency hereby promises that every effort shall be made to insure that the name or names of any person or persons who may become entitled to any of the said re\ vards~ Tor prVBate information shall not be disclosed or made public, and that the said reward shall be paid in any manner in which such person shall desire. DESCRIPTION aj^^^ Ks Kelly ( supposed fictitious) ( mother's surname Hara), native of Killasser, near Swinford, county Mayo, who stands charged with having, on the 1st March, 1883, in the barony of Tulla Upper, parish of Feakle, failed to give a satisfactory account of himself, and has been re- manded for eight days pending inquiries, as he may have committed some crime :— Brown eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 25 years of age, dark hair; wore a low round hat, brown tweed frock coat, gray tweed trowsers and vest, military boots, marked North Hampshire, 934; also wore as drawers a military trowsers, marked 934, and a military shirt; is a stone mason. Tulla, March 2, 1883. ( 55803 c.— 8653.) Andrew Hehir ( prison breach), not arrested; Hue and- Cry. 30th January, 1883. This boy absconded with Patrick Heffernan, Patrick Dorgan, and James Deegan. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 2nd March, 1883, absconded from the St. Patrick's Reformatory School, at Upton, county / Cork :— Patrick Dorgan, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 1 inch high, proportionate'make, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyefc, regular nose, medium mouth, scar • on' right eyebrow ^ formerly belonged to Kyle- street, Cork, where his parents reside. The school dress consists of. corduroy trowsers and sleeved corduroy wa'isfco'rtt, clVab tunic with leather belt, blue striped shirt, all with Reformatory stamp ; Glengarry cap, nailed boots fastened with leather strap s. This boy absconded with Michael and Patrick Heffernan and James Deegan. I The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who. may capture him with £ 1. Philip Denehy ( attempt to commit a rape), not arrested ; Hue and- Cry December 5, 1882. Cork. DESCRIPTION of two calves, the property of Jane Buckley, which were stolen from the lands of Coolenave, parish of Brigown, barony of Condons and Clongibbons, on 17th day of February, 1883 :— 1. A red heifer calf, 10 months old. in fair condi- tion ; value for £ 5. 2. A red and white heifer calf, 10 months old, in fair condition ; value for £ 5. Mitchelstown, Feb. 28, 1883. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender who, on the 2nd March, 1883, absconded from the St. Patrick's Reformatory School at Upton, county Cork :— James Deegan, 17 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, proportionate make, sallow com- plexion, brown hair, blue eyes, regular nose, medium mouth ; formerly belonged to Athy, county Kildare, where his parents reside. The school dress consists of corduroy trowsers and sleeved corduroy waistcoat, drab tunic with leather belt, blue striped shirt, all with Reformatory stamp ; Glengarry cap, nailed boots fastened with leather straps! This boy absconded with Patrick and Michael Heffernan and Patrick Dorgan. The Manager of the Reformatory will defray the expense of his conveyance, if arrested, to the nearest Justice, on remand, and will reward the person who may capture him with £ 1. DESCRIPTION of the undernamed young offender, who, on the 2nd March, 1883, absconded from the St. Patrick's Reformatory School, at Upton, county Cork:— Michael Heffernan, 16 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, slight make, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, regular nose, medium mouth, cut- mark on left side of head; formerly belonged to Tipperary Workhouse. The school dress consists of corduroy trowsers and sleeved corduroy waistcoat, black freize coat, blue striped shirt, all with Reformatory stamp ; Glengarry cap, nailed boots fastened with leather straps. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Doyle, native of Letallion, who left his father's house, at Letallion, in the barony of Upper Iveagh, parish of Kilcoo, on 23rd February, 1883, and has not since been heard of, and it is, therefore, thought that he may have met with foul play:— Blue eyes, short nose, fresh com- plexion, plump face, stout make, 4 feet high, about 12 years of age ; wore a black cap, dark tweed coat, cord trowsers, dark tweed vest, red and white spotted handkerchief round his neck ; is the son of a small farmer. Rathfriland, March 4, 1883. ( 56395 c.— 4726.) DESCRIPTION of Patrick M'Donald, alias Nelson, native of Portadown, who stands charged with having, on the 1st inst., in the barony of Kinalarty, parish of Magheradrole, entered the dwelling- house of Robert Martin, in his absence, and stolen therefrom clothing, some of which he pawned in Lisburn, and he is wearing the rest:— Regular nose, fair complexion, round face, medium make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 17 years of age; wore a gray cap with tassel, black cloth dress coat, gray trowsers, and black cloth vest; the black cloth dress coat will be rather large for liim ; is a tramp, frequenting the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Louth, and Down. Warrant for his arrest with Sub- Inspector at Downpatrick. Downpatrick, March 4, 1883. ( 56394 c.— 4725.) Galway. DUBLIN CASTLE, 9th June, 1882. WHEREAS at or about the hour of twenty minutes past three o'clock, P. M., on Thursday, the 8th June, instant, Walter M. Bourke, Esq., of Rahassane Park, Craughwell, in the county of Galway, and Corporal Wallace, of the Royal Dragoons, were shot dead on the road close to one of the gates of Castle Taylor Demesne, near Ardrahah, in the said county, by some person or persons at present unknown : His Excellency, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the perpetrators of these Murders, is pleaded hereby to offer a reward of TWO THOUSAND POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within six months lrom the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to the conviction of tire person or persons, or any of them, who committed the said Murders. And a farther reward of ONE THOUSAND POUNDS for such private information as shall lead to the same result. His Excellency is also pleased to offer in addition to the above rewards a FREE PARDON and the Special Protection of the Crown in any part of Her Majesty's Dominions to any person concerned in, or privy to, the said Murders other than the person orpersons who actually committed the same, in case of his giving such information as shall lead to the con- viction of the persons, or any of them, concerned in the Murders aforesaid. And whereas any person who knowingly receives into his or her house or otherwise harbours or maintains any of the persons who copamitted tbe said Murders, or conceals or aids any of tliofl!*" or endeavouring to escape from justice becom< 3 to penal servitude for life : THE POLICE G A Z E T T E , Or h U E - A n d - C R Y , MARCH 6, 1883. His Excellency is pleased hereby to offer a reward • of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS to any person or persons who shall, within three months from the date hereof, give such information as shall lead to tho CONVICTION of any person who has so received, harboured, maintained, or concealed, or assisted in endeavouring to escape from justice, or who shall receive, harbour, maintain, of conceal, or assist in endeavouring to escape from justice, any of the persons who committed the said Murders. Franks, Esq., the Resident Magistrate at Gort, to thoso who may become entitled to them under the conditions of this Proclamation. Kerry. DESCRIPTION of a gun, the property of Mrs. Mary Behane, Which was taken from her dwelling- honse at Ballymacwhin, in the barony of Clanmaurice, parish of Killahan, and county of Kerry, about 9 o'clock, P. M., on 23rd February, 1883, by two men disguised, whose names are unknown, and of whom no descrip- tion can bo given :—\ n old single- barrelled muzzle- loading gun, with initials J. W. B. branded on the stock; value for about £ 2. Tralee, February 28, 1883. ( 55793 C.- 8639.) DESCRIPTION of Michael Shea, native place un- known, who stands charged, with having, on the night of 6th February, 1883, at Asdee, in the barony of Irraghticonnor, parish of Ahavellen, stolen a donkey belonging to Robert Cahill, which he sold to William Keane, of Harthill, for 18 « . The donkey has been recovered :— Brown eyes, long nose, fresh complexion, long* face," medium make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 27 years of age, dark hair; is a labourer. Listowel, February 15,1883. King's. Arthur M'Carthy ( robbery), not arrested; Hue" and- Cry, 2nd March, 1.883. Tho man who gave his name as Cullen ( sheep stealing), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 23rd January, 1883. DESCRIPTION of four persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on tho night of tho 19th February, 1883, in the barony of Ooonagh, parish of Doon, seriously assaulted Denis Ryan and James Duggan :— 1. Long face, active make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 22 years of ago; wore 11 soft jerry hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest. 2. Small fair moustache and side whiskers, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 22 years of age; wore a soft black hat, gray tweed coat, and gray tweed trowsers. 3. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Hannon, alias Moran ( mother's surname Moran), native of Edmondstown, who stands charged with having, on tbe 14th day of February, 1883, in the barony of Costello, parish of Kilcolman, assaulted Joseph Campbell, by striking him on the head with a stone, thereby fracturing his 4 skull :— Walks with a swaggering gait, slightly knockkneed, and clumsy appearance, round shoulders, and small mole on face; gray eyes, regular nose, sallow complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark brown hair slightly tinged with gray; wore a frieze coat, cord trowsers, and frieze vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Francis Kelly, native of Drummond, who stands charged with having, on the 26th Feb- ruary, 1883, in the barony of Farney, parish of Magheracloone, absconded. He was on bail to take his trial at Monaghan Spring Assizes, 1883, for an attempted rape;— Walks erect, smart appearance, good- looking; brown eye3, regular nose, fresh com- plexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 9 inches liigb, about 25 years of age, dark brown hair, small dark whiskers and moustache; wore a tweed coat, cord trowsers, and tweed vest; is a cattle dealer. DESCRIPTION of John M'Clean ( name supposed to be fictitious), who stands. charged, on remand, with stealing a pair of socks, on 24th inst., out of the dwelling- house of George Kinnornly, farmer, parish of Kilmanman, barony o'f Tinnahinch, townland of Coolagh, Queen's County :— Prominent front teeth, large thick lips, high cheek bones, gray eyes, short thick nose, dark sallow complexion, round face, Stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, and 24 years of age, Dressed in a suit of old black tweed, much worn. The parcel of jewellery stolen from the railway station at Maryboro', and described in detail in the Hue- and- Cry of the 26th of last January, has not been recovered. Roscommon. DESCRIPTION of Patrick Dwyer ( mother's surname Dillon native of Emlaghbeg, barony of Ballymoe, parish of Oran, who left his father's house at Emlagh- beg on 29th January, 1883, for the purpose of attend- ing the fair of Claremorris, county Mayo, on the 31st January, 1883; was last seen at Claremorris on 31st January, and has not since been heard of. He attended the fair in company with John Hanly, of Emlaghbeg; it is supposed he is lost or met with foul play:— Slightly bald on top of head, full gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, full face, stout make, 5 feet 8 inches high, about 36 years of age, long black curly hair, shaves all his face ; wore a black hard hat, frieze coat, and corduroy trowsers. DESCRIPTION of a girl who stated her name was M'Donnell, native of Cahir, who stands charged with having, on the 13th February, 1883, in the barony of Clanwilliam, parish of Tipperary, obtained goods from shopkeepers in the town of Tipperary, under false pretences :— Brown eyes, regular pose, sallow complexion, thin face, slight make, 4 feet 2 inches high, about 14 years of age, light brown hair hanging On shoulders ; wore a seal cap, red dress, black jacket, red muffler, buttoned boots with high lieels, supposed to be accompanied by a man, respectably dressed, thin face, black whiskers, about 50 years of age.
