O. %• Whenever it ia desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably nocessary that an information should be made and aworn to before a Magistrate, th* Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Aa no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid) otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ot Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forma 88 and 68A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. • A^'-' tisements offering rewarda must atate cloarly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) Tlio conditiona on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persona forwarding them. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas, Thomas Earlam was found murdered in his house at Smallwood, Chester, oil 9th instant, supposed by a rncu known as PATRICK CAREY, alias JOHN WHITE who lias tramped under the name of JACK or JOHN :— he is about 35 or 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, tanned complexion, no whiskers or moustache, stout build, slightly pockpitted ; dressed iu a hard brown felt hat, long blue pilot cloth overcoat, corduroy trousers, patched on right kneo with light coid, also at the bottom. The following pro- perty has been stolen from the house :— a suit of menVclothes, of bl lue- black worsted cloth, slightly ribbed, nearly uew, and a Post Office Savings Bank Book, belonging to a lodger named Edward Sampey, wrapped up in a Paisley handkerchief. Further information respecting the murder at Smallwood on 9th instant :— the woman Mary Moran, ( advertised in Police Gazette of 12th instant), died on lGtli instant from the injuries received. A reward of .£ 100 will be paid by her Majesty's Government, to any person other than a person belonging to a police force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information i^ nd evidence as, shall lead to the dis- covery and conviction of tb « murderer or murderers, and the { Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Infor- mation to the Chief Constable's Office, County Police police, CHESTER, or to any Police Station.— Bow- street, Feb. 19. Whereas the dead body of a newly- born female Child was found in a privy at Belle Vue Gardens, Gorton, on 2nd inst., and at a Coroner's Inquest, held on 5th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned ' against some or persons unknown.' This is to give notice that a reward of i,' 60 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, • who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the Grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any Accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the Murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to the Chief Constable of Lancashire, PRESTON, or to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, near Manchester, or at any Police Station of the COUNTY OF LANCASTER.— Bow- street, Februray 19. On 9th instant, a Human Head was found in Apley Pool, near Wellington, Salop :— the Head, which apparently had been severed from the body by a sharp instrument, was enclosed in a bag, supposed to hare been made from a portion of a woman's dress, two pieces of brown paper being next to -" fx •' * . ' * « ( he remains, and tied with string, the whole bundle having been afterwards tied round with a piece of blue window- cord; the Head is very small, the teeth in the upper jaw are prominent, and somewhat irregular, a tooth on the ri£.. u aide in front of the eye- tooth recedes into the mouth, and is shorter than the others, dark brown hair, nose short and broad, ears very small, the features are well marked, snd in good state of preservation, and any one who had known them during life, would have no difficulty in recognising them. Neither age nor sex can be positively stated. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ivins, County Constabulary Office, WELLINGTON, Salop.— Bov- street, February 14. On 7th instant the dead body of a woman named Mary Conden was found floating in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burnley, and had evidently been in the water 8 or 9 days. There was a large wound over left temple, penetrating the skull, and a smaller wound above and behind left ear. An inquest was held upon the body, and the Jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some persou or persons unknown.' Information to Mr. Supt. Wright, County Police Office, BURNLEY, Lancashire.--\ Bow- strert, February 12. FORGERY. Absconded on 10th ultimo charged with forgery: — GEORGE H. SIMPSON, alias WESTON, a clerk, 40 years of age, 5 feet Oi inches high, dark brown hair, fair moustache ( heavy), blue eyes, bald back of neck, supposed through blistering, hair long to cover same, one front tooth deficient in upper jaw, splay footed ; dressed in dark brown overcoat, black hard felt hat, ring on little iiu « er right hand ; may be found at Shorncliffe or Bedford Barracks, pensioned 11th April, 1882, from l » t Battalion 16th Foot, at latter place ; mother resides at 33, Mount- street, Devonport. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investiga- tions, Great Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, February 19. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Wanted on a charge of pocket picking, along with two other men, now iu custody, ( remanded to 13th instant) :— a man, about 35 years of age, 5 ftet 5 or 6 inches high, dark sallow complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed iu black cloth coat, pepper and salt coloured trousers and vest, blank billycock hat. Information to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester.— Bow- street February 12 BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Wanted ou warrant for warehouse- breaking, at Longton, on 12th iustaut:— JOSEPH SWETENEHAM, 43 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, beard and moustache, blue eyes, medium build, a carter or labourer, ' D' on left side and cut mark back of left hand, a widower and native of Longton ; generally wears a soft billy- cock bat ; he is a returned convict, has been in penal servitude several times, and was last discharged from Borstal Convict Prison on 1st February, 1876. Also SAMUEL GRATTIDGE, shoemaker, 32 yews of age, 5 feet 8| inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, small light moustache and beard, about a fortnight's growth, blue eyes, slender build, anchor on right forear. u, ' J. S.', anchor and bracelet left forearm, end oil' first left toe. scar right of neck aid right groin, and mole on left breast ; dressed in cord trousers, and lace- up boots, heavily nailed,— native of Longton. is a returned convict, discharged from Dartmoor Convict Prison 22nd July, 1877, after5 years for warehouse- breaking. Between 11 p. m. and 6 a. m. on 9th inst.. the ' Garibaldi' beer- house, Chalvey, Bucks, was broken into and stolen therein :— 150 common penny Cigars ; two men's old striped Shirts : a pair of man's lace- up Boots, No. 6 size, nearly new; a Scarf ; a man's tweed Coat; a man's tweed Vest ( darker than coat); a pair of man's black leather Leggings ; a pair of woman's knitted Stockings ; a pair of woman's button Boots, much woru ; and a woman's dark waterproof Cloak. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 7 and 8 p. m 7th instant, from Manor House, Esher : — three Kings, one diamond, one plain gold, and one signet, crest— a dog tied down; a suit of Clothes, Oxford mixture ; a diagonal cloth / A Goat; a pair of brown Trousers; and £ 9 in Gold. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Remanded at Atherstone, until 20th inst:— CHARLES NICOLL, charged with stealing aj Horse, on 6th instant, recovered at Derby, he states he is a confectioner, and native of Edinburgh, but has spent most of his life at and near Burton- on- trent and Derby ; he has the appearance of a groom or stable helper ; 32 years of age, 5 feet 1J inch high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, face very slightly pockmarked and spotted with erysipelas marks, large scar Iv'ow cap of right knee, has had left thigh broken, blister mark back of left leg, and flesh wart below left shoulder; dressed iu a dark grey tweed suit, tight- fitting trousers, brown hard felt hat; is supposed to be the man wauted for horsestealing in the counties of Somerset, Devon, and Stafford, as described in Police Gazettes of 3rd November and 1st December, 1882, and 31st ultimo. Information to Mr. Supt. R. Hannah, Police Office, ATHERSTONE, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, February 16. Stolen from a field at Bloxwich, near Walsall, on or about 8th instant:— a dark brown Horse, strong nag Colt, 4 years old, 15 hands high, docked tail, without Bhoes. In- formation to Chief Constable Cater, WALSALL, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 14. Description of SPACKMAN, alias HENRY LAMBerT, wanted at Reading for obtaining a Pony by false pretences on 23rd December lait:— he is lrom 30 to 35 years of age, full face, 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout built; dressed in pepper and salt coloured dust coat, is a horse coper aud frequents fairs, & c., is well known at Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Abingdon, and other places. Information to Chief Supt. Jas. Purchase, Borough Police Station, READING, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 14. Stolen from a field at Harlow, Essex, about 7p. m. on the evening of the 6th instant :— a dapple grey nag aged. 15 hands high, silvery mane and tail, in foal, ami good condition. Information to Mr. Sapt. John Lennon,. Consta- bulary Office, EPPING, Essex.— Bow- street, teb. 14. a, Stolen during the night of 17th instant, from a stable at. Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire :— a black Ilorse, about 15 hands high, aged, has a small spavin on near hock, in fair workiug condition, hair chaftd off both hind quarters by the boat harness. Supposed by a lad, 15 or 16 years of age, wearing light coloured clothing. Information to Mr. supt. D. Norman, Police Office, TOWCESTER, or at any Police Station iu the County.— Bow- street, February 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT' Absconded from Cirencester, on 15th instant, charged on a wnrrant with stealing from a dwelling- house, £ 30 in Gold : — EDWIN WITTS, of Cirencester, labourer, and formerly tea dealer, 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark com- plexion, dark hair, dark thick moustache, whiskers shaved off, beard very dark, has a cold or infl imation in the left eye; dressed in an old grey overcoat, with dark velvet collar, with old dark grey cloth jacket and trousers, much worn, nearly a new pair of strong boots, and black bowler hat, which he may have changed since he left on 15th instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Wood, Cirencester.— Bow- street, February 19. Stolen from the Cliff, Stourbridge, between 11 p. m. 13th, an. l 9 a. m. 14th inst. :—£ 10 in Gold. By a man who lodged at the house on the night of the 13th instaut, and leftat9a. m. on the 14th instant, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fiesh complexion, long thin features, black curly hair, hald on top of head, has a thick nose which is flit at the end ; dressed in a loDg blue overcoat, dark cloth vest, and hard billy hat ; statel he was employed by the Great Western Railway Company, to repair telegraph and signal wired. Information to Mr. Supt. John Wheeler, Police Office, STOUR- BRIDGE, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, February 19. Stoleu at Gorton, between 8 a. m. and 10 30 a. m. 2ud instant,:— a woollen Shawl, recovered. It was pledged by a girl, 16 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh oouiplexion, and light sandy hair; dressed in an old brown dress, black cloth jacket, trimmed round the bottom with black fur, elastic- side boots, and black straw hat ; she is a factory operative. In- formation to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Man- chester— Bow- street, February 19. Description of WILLIAM RACKLEY, late ot Cowley. Middlesex, wauted for Fowl stealing at Iver, Bucks, on 3rd instant:— he is 35 years of age, about 5 feet 10 « r 11 in: hes high, full face,* large features, and clean shaved; dressed in a velveteen jacket, cord or fustian trousers, hairy cap, and lace- up boots ; turns his toe< out very much when walking, and of dirty appearance, ^ formation to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, SLOUH, or to Inspector Sapwell, IVER, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— — Bow- street, February 19. Absconded from Worcester :— a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, thin face, dark brown moustache, and beard on chin ; dressed in brown coat with two buttons on back and pockets on hips, black bowler hat, and old ela « tic side boots with odd toecaps; charged with stealing a Vest ( recovered), a gold horse- shoe Pin with a stirrup in the centre, a gold Nugget Pin with three atones, the fourth lost; and an 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE February 19 imitation gold curb Chain, the bar lost, and a Spade Guinea. He stated that he is a saddler, and called at shops, asking for work. Information to the Head Constable, City Police Office, WORCESTER.— Bow- street, Feb. 16. Stolen from the Queen's Head beer- house in Ely, on 7th inatant:— a pair of plain fronted Oxonian Shoes, without nails, half worn out, with black worsted laces. By a man who had lodged there the previous night, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, a good iigure, pockmarked face, no whiskers, Blight dark moustache; dressed in dark cloth coat, light coarse trousers, hard black billycock, hawks combs, and collects skins in a bag. Supposed to belong to Cambridge. Information to T. Snath, D. C. C., ELY, Cambs.— Bow- street, February 10. Charged on warrant with stealing three tin Boxes, containing Clothing, at New Clee, on 13th inst.:— JOSEPH TWIDALE, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very stout, bloated appearance, dark hair and mous- tache, and small whiskers ; dressed In dark clothes, and hard black round billycock hat; accompanied by a woman, 34 yw. of age, lost two teeth from front, and her little boy, 2 years old. They left Grimsby, on 13th instant, stayed at Hull all night, left by first train on 14th instant, for Leeds. The woman has her marriage lines with her, her maiden name was Eleanor Gray. Information to Mr. Supt. Geo. Jarvis, County Police Station, GREAT GRIMSBY, Lincolnshire. — bow- street, February 16. Stolon from Wellington on 14th instant:— a dark buff cloth Overcoat, jellow bone buttons, pockets on hips, and one on left breast, lined with stuff to correspond, lining of sleeves is black and yellow,' Venables & Co.,' on suspension loop on collar. Supposed by a woman 35 or 40 years of age, 4 feet 9 or 10 inchi i high, fresh complexion, round fa< e, slight build; dressed in black hat and rough long dog skin jacket, torn around the back aud patched on the back with rough cloth, supposed gone t, o Newport. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Ivins, WELLINGTON, Salop.— Bone- street, February 10. . Absconded from Penrith, Cumberland, on 31st ultimo, charged with larcony, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued:— ALBERT ALLISON, hairdresser's apprentice, will probably try to go to sua, a native of Cocker- mouth, Cumberland, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 0 inches high, broad hips, stout figure, awkward gait wheu walking, dark complexion, dark eyos, brown hair, full face, and has a few dark hairs on upper lip ; dressed in dark cloth jacket, yellow tweed trousers, and low hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Fowler, PENRITH, who holds the warrant for his apprehension, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, CARLISLE.— Mow- sired, February 14. Description of WALTER WILLIAMS, a grocer's assistant, wanted at Sheffield, on warrant, charged with embezzlement:— ho is about 35 years of age, about; 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, sandy beard, whiskers, aud moustache, cut short, slim build ; dressed in a brown mixture coat aud vest, black trousers, aud short blue nilot overcoat, aud low felt hat ; up to 10th iustant, he has been travelling for a cigar merchant, he has worked at a public- house in Hertford, as an ostler, aud has also been en, ployed as a grocer's assistant., in London, Hull, and Liver- s pool. Absconded on 30th ultimo, from Wold charged with stealing a silver Euglish patent lever Watch, maker Ross, the glass ha* a small crack near the edge, steel curb Chain with an obi Key attached ; a siher demi hunting Watch, No. 25088, blue figures on outside of case, thick double steel Chain with email Coin and Key attached, ' One Dim' on one side of coin ; a silver tie. eve, medium size ; a silver Geneva Lever, No. 41170, maker Vogt, Northampton, steel Chain, split lling, two Keys, and German silver Guard attached ; an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, maker Gibson, London, ca. ies very thin, dial chipped, small split Ring attached; an old- fashioned hilver verge Watch. No. 13302 or 13002, maker Williams, London.— WILLIAM WATSON, alias CLOCKEY BILLY, travelling watch and clock cleaner, 40 to 45 years of age, both little fingers contracted, about 5 feet high, walks forward with quick shuffliug gait, has a very short neck, pa'e complexion, biown hair, lij, ht browu heavy moustache, and whiskers; dressed in shabby dark btowu coat, moth- eaten under left arm, dark brown vest, and light brown trousers, pitched o) i both knees with darker material, about a foot in length, with a light stripe down side, br- wn cloth cap, aud lace- up boot;'; speaks with Yorkshire accei t. talked very much about Carlisle; ho said he c. ime from York, and at other times Scarborough. Information to Mr. Supt Williamson, Couuty, Coustabulary, NORTHAMPTON, who holds a warrant for liis apprehension.— Smo- stre- t, February 14. Wanted at Kendal, on a charge o£. embezzlement:— ROWLAND EWAN, late coal agent to the Kendal Equitable Industrial Co- operative Society, who absconded on 28ih 0: t., 1882. Abont 45 years of age, about 6 fest 7 inches high, fresb complexion, heavy bushy whiskers, dark brown hair, propor- tionate build, has lost some teeth on right side of upper jaw, which are rather conspicuous, sticks i: is shoulders up and hangs his head to ope side when walking, rather simple looking, shuttling walker ; dressed in black cloth shooting coat and vest, durk grey tweed trousers, aud soft billycock hat. He is a native of hutton. Westmorland ; has relatives at Crook, and Gilpin Bridge. Has been in the employ of the Furness Railway Company ; was foreman porter at Grange and station- master on t. he Furness Railway ; is well known at Ulverston, Barrow- in- Furness, Workington, Whitehaven, and other parts of Cumberland. He is supposed to be residing at Manchester. See Police Gazette of 3rd November, 1882. In- formation to Thomas Cotton, Chief Constable, KEXDAL, Westmorland, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- sired, February 14. Stolen in Chester on 7th instant:— a cat's- eye Breast Pin, let with \ diamonds, has a fUw at bottom of eye ; a gold owl's head iiicast Pin, with diamond eyes. By HUGH HARDY, who had been valet to the owner, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, delicite looking, sallow com- plexion, appears consumptive, wears heavy brown moustache ami small side whiskers, walks peculiarly, owing to lie- el of left foot being sore ; dressed in a suit of black, billycock hat, Oxford aboes, with check cloth tops, and a pieoe cut out of heel to ease foot, and wears a silver ring on left hand. Was waiter at some hotel in Shrewsbury lately, aud in the Infirmary there and also at Macclesfield, having broken a blood- vessel, and last year was waiter during the season at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Grasmere. Information to the Chief Constable, CHESTER,— Bow- street, February 14. Charged with stealing at London Road, St. Alban's, about 1 p. m. on 9th instant:— a pair of long gold fringe earrings, nnrked on back 18 carat, and set with 5 or 6 small turquoises; a lady's gold plain Ring, set with 6 pearls and a diamond in the centre; a lady's gold mourning ring, with ' Regard' in gold letters ; a lady's gold wedding Ring, and a lady's plated silver Ring. A man about 28 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 inches higb, dark complexion and moustache, no whiskers, round features ; dreageilrm a fawn- coloured over- coat, dark trousers, and black feft hat. Information to Mr. Superintendent Pike, Police Office, ST. ALBAN'S.— Bow- slreet, February 12. Description of JOHN ANDREWS, charged on a war- rant with having stolen a great Coat and Cape, in Wrexham, Denbighshire, on 18th ultimo:— he is 31 years of age, 5 feet 5> inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, a turner, but now a groom. Supposed to be employed with a brother in Westminster. Ho recently left 23rd regiment. Information to W. Wilde, D. C. C., WREXHAM, Denbigh- shire.— Bow- street, February 12. A warrant has been granted for the apprehension of ARCHIBALD M'CORMICK, an important witness in a case of murder, committed near Girvau; on 29th November last, which is to be tried before the Justiciary Court in Edinburgh, on 19th instant:— he is known to have assumed the name ARCHIBALD ADAMS since the date of the murder, and he may now be passing under that or any other name, a labourer and a notorious poacher, about 21 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches higb, a native of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, he and his brother used to frequent Hawick, Peebles, and Galashiels in their poaching excursions, brown hair, generally cut short, no whiskers, fair moustache, ordinary build, rather stout and thick set, sma 1 forehead, full round short face, short neck, small grey eyes, deeply sunk, heavy eyebrows, sulky appearance, Scotch accent; he belongs to the Dumfries- shire Militia, his description was circulated in Police Information from Kirkcudbrightshire, dated 18th March, 1882, when he was wanted as an important witness in a case of murder, committed at Threave in that county; dressed in brownish grey tweed jacket, dark grey marled tweed vest, snuff- coloured marled tweed trousers, blue Stewarton cap, with diced border and peak, - White muffler, checked wincey shirt, strong heavy lacing boots, with tackets, when at work is in the habit of weariug white moleskin trousers ; he left Girvau the neighbourhood of the murder), on 3rd December, since which ho has been traced to Lugar, from 9th to 13th December, on the evening of the latter date he lift Lugar, and no further trace of him has been obtained.
