The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. C. %• Whenever it il desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, o( the Offence ohargod, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Ai no oharge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor oioat be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and « ( Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 68 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. JMw rtisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or aooom|> anied by a letter, signed by tae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the afternoon of 9th instant, Thomas Earlam, a lodging- house keeper, at Smallwood, was found murdered in his house ; also Mary Moran, who lived with the above, was found in the house very much ill- treated, and L> still uncon scious. Supposed by. a man who had been lodging in the house about seven days, and goes about the country begging . goes by the name of JOHN, about 37 years of age, f> leet 7 inches high, dark or tanned complexion, black hair, no whiskers or moustache, stout build, slightly pockpitted on cheekbones ; dressed in a brown low- crowned hard felt hat, a long blue pilot top coat with large pockets, corduroy troiwers, patched on [ right knee a.. d at the bottom with lighter mate- rial, and lace- up boots. There was stolen from the house at the time a man's suit of black ribbed worsted cloth clothes, nearly new, and a Post Office Savings Bank Book, Sandbach, - No. 216, in the name of' Edward Sampey. ' was in the pocket. The above man was seen leaving the neighbourhood at about 12.40 p. m. with a bundle under his arm, tied up in a parti- coloured muffler ; lie had also two tins, one containing sugar, the other tea, which he took away with him. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, CHESTER ; Supt. Hindley, Mid- DLEWICH, Cheshire; or any Police Station.— Bow- street, Feb. 12. On 7th instant the dead body of a woman named Mary Conden was found floating in tho Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burnley, and had evidently been in the water 8 or 9 days. There was a large wound over left temple, penetrating the skull, anil a smaller wound above and behind left ear. An inquest was held upon the body, and the Jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some persou or persons unknown.' Information to Mr. Supt. Wright, County Police Office, BURNLEY, Lancashire.}- Bow- atrett, February 12. On 2nd instant, the dead body of a female Child was found in a water closet at Belle Vue Gardens, the child appears to have been dead about C weeks. At the coroner's inquest the jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown. Information to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester.— low- street, February 7. FORGERY. Wanted on a charge of passing a forged Bauk of ling- land Note for £ t>, on 20th ultimo :— a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, sallow complexion, thin face, dark hair, cut short, heavy dark moustache, but no whiskers, a rioke with a foreign accent, endorsed the note ' G. Longden,' „ u iposed to be the same man who passed similar notes in wL : ngham, in April 1881. The note is numbered 30013, and I T 1 14TH March, 1882. Information to H. Wanted on a charge of pocket picking, along with two other men, now in custody, ( remanded to 13th instant) :— a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark sallow complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in black cloth coat, pepper and salt coloured trousers and vest, black billycock hat. Information to County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester.— Bow- street February 12 BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 11 p. m. and 6 a. m. on 9th inst.. the ' Garibaldi' beer- house, Chalvey, Bucks, was broken into and stolen therein :— 150 common penny Cigars ; two men's old striped Shirts ; a pair of man's iace- up Boots, No. 6 size, r. early new; a Scarf; a man's tweed Coat; a man's tweed Nest ( darker than coat) ; a pair of man's black leather Leggings ; a pair of woman's knitted Stockings ; a pair of woman's button Boots, much worn ; and a woman's dark waterproof Cloak. Stoleu by meana of housebreaking, between 7 and 8 p. m 7th instant, from Manor House, Esher : — three Rings, one diamond, one plain gold, and one signet, crest— a dog tied down; a suit of Clothes, Oxford mixture ; a diagonal cloth Coat; a pair nf brown Trousers ; and £ 9 iu Gold. Informa- tio I to Mr. Supt. Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, CHF. RTSEY. Bow- street, February 12. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in Hinckley, between 6 and 8 p. m. on 4th instant:— a silver Geneva Watch; a gold plated Brooch, with red cornelian stone; a gold plated keeper Ring, with led stone; a gold plated keeper Ring, with green and white Btones; and two common keeper Rings. A jemmy, 14 inches long, and J inch wide, and a piece of wax candle, wrapped in a piece of the Birmingham Daily Mail, for 23rd, 1882, were left behind. Information to Mr. Supt. Chapman, HINCKLEY.— Bow- steet, February 7. Stolen at Peterborough, on 2nd instant:— a man's Ulster, grey rough material, minus the band, dark bone or wood buttons; a black cloth Test, no collar ; au old rusty colour cloth Coat; a pair of new cloth Trousers, grey plaid or square pattern, brass buttons, has name ' W. Gaunt, Peterborough,' on them ; a black silk Neckerchief, a square ; a red and white silk Pocket- handkerchief ; a small brown leather Pormanteau, has on a label, ' Boulogne'. By a stout man, about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet high, palo complexion, rather full face, dark eyes, hair and whiskers, the latter very thin, slight moustache ; was wearing a brown hard felt hat, dark coat, blue vest, spring side Chelsea boats, black necktie, and paper collar. The thief may be wearing the Ulster and Trousers, as the thief is about same siy. e as the person robbed ; stated he was a money lender ; had a tin box, about 18 ins. by 12, covered with canvas; has in his possession 2 pawn- tickets— a frock Coat, pledged at Marshall's, Peterborough, on 2nd instant, for 2s. 9d., Wilson, Spread Eagle ; the other, for a frock Coat and a pair of . laced Boots, Jenkins, Stamford Street, London, for 7s. 6d., pledged at Morley's, Peterboro'. Information to James Hurst, Head Constable, PETERBORO'. — Bow- street, February 6, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING The two Horses, advertised in Police Gazette of 9th inst., as having been stoleu, January 27th, from a field at Dudley, have been found and reitored to the owners ; they had strayed away.— Bow street, February 12. Found in possession of a man, CHARLES NICOLL, remanded until 15th instant, charged on suspicion of stealing the same ;— a brown horse Pony, 5 years old, 13 hands 1 in. high, white star on forehead, tail cut, in good condition, and has a rough coat, as if it h « d turned out. Nicoll is 32 years of age, 6 feet 4 inches high, slender build, no whiskers or moustache, blotched face; dressed in dark grey tweed suit and brown hat. He refuses to give any account of himself. Stolen on 29th ultimo:— a dark bay Horse, aged, 15 hands, star on forehead, near hind foot, off fore foot, and fetloc'- s white, switch tail, in good condition, carries his head erect when trotting, value £ 12. Information to Mr. Supt. McHugo. Metropolitan Police, Blackheath- road, GREENWICH, S. E.— Metropolitan Police, February 7. Obtaired by false pretences ia Sheffield, on 26th December last;— a bay Mare, 4 years old, 14i hands high, has a small bit of white on off hind foot, a small star on fore- head, a saddle mark on back, a piece off one ear, and was in good condition. By a man named GEO. HOLEHOUSE, a horse- dealer, alJSut 42 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, thin build, rather long features, dark sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, if not shaved off; is well known in Manchester and other towns in Lancashire, aud has been convicted for a similar offence at Wigan, Information to Mr. J. Jackson, Chief Constable, SHEFFIELD, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- ttreet, ' February 5. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT ALEXANDER STARKEY, advertised in Police Gazette of 5th instant, wanted at Kendal, for larceny, has been apprehended in London.— Bow- street, February 12. JAMES SUTTON HOLMES, advertised in Police Gazette of 5th instant, haa been apprehended.— Bow- street, February 12. RICHARD BISHOP, advertised in Police Gazette of 15th ultimo, as being wanted at Welshpool, nas been appre- hended and committed for trial.— Bow- sweet, February 12. Charged with stealing at Loudon Road, St. Alban'?, about 1 p. m. on 9th instant:— a pair of long gold fringe earrings, marked on back 18 carat, and set with 5 or 6 small turquoises; a lady's gold plain Ring, set with 6 pearls and a diamond in the centre ; a lady's gold mourning Ring, with ' Regard' in gold letters ; a lady's gold wedding Ring, and a ludv's plated silver Ring. A man about 28 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion and moustache, no whiskers, round features ; dressed in a fawn- coloured over- coat, dark trousers, and black felt hat. Information to Mr, Superintendent Pike, Police Office, ST. AIBAN'B.— Bow- street, February 12. Description of JOHN ANDREWS, charged on a war- rant with having stolen a great Coat and Cape, in Wrexham, Denbighshire, on 18th ultimo :— he is 31 years of age, 6 feet 51 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, a ' urner, but now a groom. Supposed to be employed with a brother in Westminster. He recently left 23rd regiment. Information to W. Wilde, D. C. C., WREXHAM, Denbigh- shire.— Bow- street, February 12. Stolen about 4 p. m. on 10th instant, at Oswestry:— a hlack cloth Overcoat, plain colla*-, with pockets. on each hip, ' small ticket pocket on right side, and fupx . ver teactj ® is pocket inside left breaBt; and a round black corded*„ th Jacket, single- breasted, pockets on hips with flaps, ticket, pocket on right side, and pocket on outside of left breast, loop for hanging up by broken off; a pair of old dogskin Gloves, lined with woollen, in one of the pockets of the overcoat. Suspected by a man ( supposed a navvy), about 30 years of age, short and stout built, full face and red, no whiskers or mous- tache ; dressed in a long loose white slop and light- coloured tronserp. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, OSWESTRY.— Bow- sheet, February 12. Wanted on a warrant at Reading, for stealing a silver Geneva Watch and Chain, on 26th ult. :— TOM STEPHEN- SON, but whose name is believed to be WOOLLEY, about 46 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light hair, light whiskers, turning grey, mostly on chin, and moustache, tattoo marks cross swords on back of left hand, ship on right arm ; dressed in brown overcoat, patched at comers of c> Uar with pieces of a dark or black dress, blue serge jacket, with brass buttons, check trousers, and hard round felt hat. Is in the habit of representing himself as a telegraph inspector. In- formation to Mr. Supt. J. Purchase, Borough Police Station, READING, Berks.— Bow- street, February 12. Description of JOHN THOS. STANDSTRIGHT, alias STANDHOPE, alias WILSON, chimney sweep, wanted on warrant, charged with stealing between 3 and 4 a. m. 5th inst., at castleford, au 8- cane rod Sweeping Machine Brush, hand Brush, and flannel Sheet, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet high, light complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, rather stout build; cut across forehead ; dressed as a sweep,* and had with him a pair of light cord trousers, blue cloth vest, and cMh cap ; he came out of the Industrial School at Leeds, has worked for a chimney sweep at Bradford. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Whincup, West Riding Constabulary, PONTEFRACT, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 9. Absconded from Portsmouth, on Ist instant, charged with embezzlement:— JOHN HENRY COUSINS, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, brown hair, small whiskers and moustache, shaved under chin, fresh complexion, dimple on chin, stout build, round shouldered, carries his head slightly forward, and speaks and walks quickly; dressed in brown felt hat, brown overcaat, single- breasted black diagonal cloth undercoat, dark grey trousers, and lace up boots with thick soles. Is a grocer, and has recently been traveller to a biscuit manufacturer. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Central Police Station, PORTSMOUTH, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 9. Absconded from Portsmouth, since 2nd instant, charged with embezzlement:— PHILIP MOTT, about 37 yrs. of IGE, 5 feet 0 or 7 inches high, brown hair, fair complexion, small moustache and whiskers at sides, chin and throat clean shaved ; dressed in black felt hat, and brown check suit ; is of respectable appearance aud good address. Has been a brewer's traveller. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, PORTSMOUTH, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, tebruarv 9. Charged on warrant with larceny as bailee :— DANIEL EDWARDS, 60 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, thin features, fresh complexion, grey hair and whiskers, shaved under chin, no moustache, grey eyes, stoops a little when walking, and slightly deaf ; dressed in dark jacket, straight back, dark vest, pepper- and- salt coloured trousers, light coloured soft tweed hat, carries a basket with cord attached, and generally a long walking stick ; states he is a gardener, and has been employed at Exeter Hall, Shropshire ; calls cn clergymen and gardeners for relief, represents he has been 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T TE February 320 engaged by some one in the neighbourhood, but from the weather and some other cause he has been unable to com- mence work; stops at common lodging- houses. Wanted on a warrant, charged with stealing a Suit of Clothes, at Hardwa", Oosport, on 3rd instant ( recovered) :— JOHN KETTLE BAND, a labourer, 39 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark browr hair, bluo eyes, fresh complexion, little or no whiskers, slight moustache, marks— cup marks on breast, scar left aim, Uft, knee, right thigh and right hand, and rather round blwuldered ; was born at Barrow- on- Soar has served in the Royal Artillery, and has been three times convicted of larceny ; dressed in a. light or drab colour jacket, pockets at sides, corduroy trousers, round hard bleck felt hat, and side- spring boots. Stolen in Stockport, between 8 pm. 2nd and 8 am 3rd instant:— three 6s. packets of Copper, wrapped in paper, with the name ' Jesse Howard' thereon; and 12 receipt Stamps. Two other shops were entered the same night in the same building, but nothing stolen. Stolen in Stockport between 11 p. m. on 2nd instant, and 5 30 a m. on 3rd iustant: — a man's black ribbed cloth Over° coat, double breasted, cloth covered buttons to match, black Italian lining, which has Jbeen stitched a little at top of ono sleeve, bound round edge and pockets with mohair braid, 4 J pockets outside and one inside, and supposed to have maker's name ' Higham, Manchester,' on tab inside collar, nearly new; a man's brown mixture plaid Coat, brown speckled buttons to match, two pockets in laps at Bides, one outside left breass, one inside right breast, brown lining nearly new ; a pair of youth's lace- up watertight Boots, size 6, straight toecaps, has a small patch over heel on left boot, and has been stitched a little over heel of right boot, recently soled and heeled.
