O. %• Whenever it is dosired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be mado and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor tniMl tie prepaul, otherwise the insertion will not be mado. The Names and Descriptions of Dosorters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. • Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a lettor, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. FORGERY. Wanted on a charge of passing a forged Bank of Eag- land Note for £ 5, on 20th ultimo a man, about 40 years of » ge, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, sallow complexion, thin face, dark hair, cut short, heavy dark moustache, but no whiskers, spoke with a foreign accent, endorsed the note ' G. Longden,' supposed to be the same man who passed similar notes in Nottingham, in April 1881. The note is numbered 30013, and dated 14th March, 1882. Information to H. keenan, Chief Constable, NORTHAMPTON.— Bmo- itrcct, February 5. BURGLARY AND HOXJSE BREAKING. Stolen at Peterborough, on 2nd instant:— n man's Ulster, grey rough material, minus the band, dark bone or wood buttons ; a black cloth Vest, no collai ; an old rusty colour cloth Coat; a pair of new cloth . Trousers, grey plaid or square pattern, brass buttons, has name ' W, Gaunt, Peterborough,' on them ; a black silk Neckerchief, a square ; a red and white silk Pocket- handkerchief; a small brown leather Pormanteau, has on a label, 1 Boulogne'. By a stout man, about 40 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches to G feet high, pale complexion, lather full face, dark eyes, bair and whiskers, the latter very thin, slight moustache ; was wearing a brown bard felt hat, dark coat, blue vest, spriug side Chelsea boots, black necktie, and paper collar. The tbief m& y be wearing the Ulster and Trousers, as the thief is about same size as the person robbed ; stated be was a money lender ; bad a tin box, about 18 ins. by 12, covered with canvas; lias in his possession 2 pawn- tickets— a frock Coat, pledged at Marshall's, Peterborough, on 2nd instant, for 2s. 9d., Wilson, Spread Eagle ; the other, for a frock Coat and a pair of | laced Boots, Jenkins, Stamford Street, London, for 7s. 6d., pledged at Morley's, Peterboro*. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 18th and 25th ultimo, at Eastville :— an old silver Geneva Watch, enamel face, minute hand missing ; two Overcoats, men's size, one dark green melton cloth ( three pockets and a small ticket do., with dark buttons), the other a black rib fancy cloth ( two pockets on skirt behind, with black cloth buttons; a fancy cloth Vest, black ground, red and amber flowers ; and a small silver pocket Fruit Knife, pearl handle. Information to Mr. Supt. Matthews, Police StatioD, FISHPONDS, or to Sergeant Morley, EASTVILLK, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Northfield, between 1 and 7 a m. on 30th instant:— four electro- plated fish Knives and Prongs; five electro- plated napkin Rings ; twelve tea Spoons, nickel gilt; a pair of fish Carvers, knotted ivory handles ; a cuj glass claret Jug, silver lid and mount; A punch Ladle, Bilver bowl, and whalebone handle ; a hrown silk Umbrella, dark handle ; a brown rough cloth Overcoat, velvet collar, black striped lining, pockets on hips, and out- side breast pocket. Information to Mr. Supt. Tyler, Police Office, KING'S HEATH.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen by means ! of housebreaking at Leatherhead, on 23rd instant :— an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, with steel Chain attached, case much worn, and has a small hole in it, maker's name supposed ' Thomas, London'. Supposed by two men:— one about 35 years of age, 5 ft. 10 ins. high, dark com- plexion ; dressed in black pilot jacket, cord trousers, and soft black hat; the other about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, full face, and has a few whiskers; dressed in a grey tweed jacket, with white slop underneath, cord trousers, and black cloth cap. Information to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, DORKING.— Bow- street, January 29. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Obtaired by false pretences iu Sheffield, on 26th December last:— a bay Mare, 4 years old, 141 hands high, has a small bit of white on off land foot, a small star on fore- head, a saddle mark on back, a piece off one ear, and was in good condition. By a man named GEO. HOLEHOUSE, a horse- dealer, about 42g* earH of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexioi^ iiin build, rather long features, dark sandy hair, - whiskers, and moustache, if not shaved off; is well known in Manchester and other towns in Lancashire, and has been convicted for a similar offence at Wigan. Information to Mr. J. Jackson, Chief Constable, SHEFFIELD, who holds a warrant for liis apprehension. — Bow- Hreet, February 5. Stolen during the night of 30th or morning of 31st ult.' from the farm yard at White Hall, Bishops Stortford :— a large black cart Mare, 16 hands high, in good condition, has one shoe off near forefoot, 7 years old, with tail touching the ground. Also stolen from the stable at the same time : — a horse's leather Collar, lined with striped lining, nearly new. Supposed by three men,— 1st, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion and eyes, black whiskers side of face, and no moustache; dressed in dark waistcoat, dark trousers, and blsck felt hat. 2nd, 40 to 45 years of age, about 5 feet 10 iuche « high, slight build, pale complexion ; dressed in dark overcoat, and wearing a soft wide- a- wake hat. 3rd, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fcir complexion, sandy whiskers on side of face; dressed in dark overcoat, hard black felt hat. Had with them in the town of Bishops Stort- ford a brown Cob, about 14 hands high, and a light spring Cart with dark coloured paint. They left Stortford at 8 p. m.; the Mare was traced from the farm across three fields into the higk road, and the track of Horse and Cart and stolen Mare traced on the high road to Hertford and London. The three men in question are suppesed to be the same men who stole a Colt at Marlow, Bucks, on 6th ultimo. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ryder, Police Station, BISHOPS STORTFORD, Herts.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen from a field at Bromley, Pensnett, on night of 27th instant:— a brown mare Pony, about 12 hands high, cut mane and tail, white blaze down the face, shod all round, 5 years old, and has not been worked, is very wild. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston, BRIERLEY HILL.— Bow- street, Jan. 31. • Wanted for stealing a Horse ( recovered), at Bilston, on 23rd instant:— a man, about 30 years of age, looks older about mouth, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, light brown hair, cut short, clean shaved, slender build, slightly pock- pitted, both corners of mouth chopped, speaks black country dialect, has the appearance of a jockey or groom ; dressed in light cloth suit, tight fittiug, and lace- up boots. Information to Chief Supt. Longden, BILSTON, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 29. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Wanted on a charge of stealing, about 20th ultimo, a lady's Ulster ( recovered), a tramping woman, 40 years of age, 5 feet high, dark hair, fresh complexion, brown eyes, abscess on left cheek, back of each ear, and under chin ; dressed in a black bonnet, short black jacket, trimmed with black fur, fitting tight to the body, old faded skirt, and bad boots. Stated she belongs to Liverpool: was seen in Welshpool on 30th ultimo, going in the direction of South Wales. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Gough. OSWESTRY, or to P. C. Hopwood, PANTS, OSWESTRY, Salop.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen at Gorton, between 1 and 5 p. in. 31st ultimo:— a joiner's Rip Saw and a Hand Saw, both nearly new and marked ' G. Hartell.' Supposed by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, enndy hair, slight whiskers and moustache, and wore a brown coat. Informa- tion to the County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester. — Bow- street, February 5. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing the Jacket, Boots, & c. ( not recovered), from a dwelling- house at Charlotte- row. Ellesmere ( see Police Gazette of 23rd December last) :— a man, from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, stout build, very round face, fresh complexion, dark brown whiskers round face ; dressed in the stolen jacket and boots, dirty moleskin jacket and vest, and black billycock hat. He is a native of Dunham- on- the- Hill, Cheshire, and has been convicted for drunkenness at Malpas, Farndon, and Runcorn. His wife and family, and also his father, William Whitby, are now residing at St. Helen's, Lancashire, where the latter was formerly employed at the Gasworks. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Gough, OSWESTRY, or to P. S. Walters, ELLESMERE, Salop, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 6. Charged with larceny at Tunstall, on 2Gth ultimo :— PETER GILMER, an lostler, 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, slight moustache and whiskers, grey eyes ( full with red cast), and stout build, supposed native of Glasgow ; dressed in black boiler- end hat, dark brown single- breasted overcoat, dark jacket and vest, brown corduroy trousers, short buttoned leggings, and blucher boots, all old. Has travelled with George Paine's [ mechanical show, and may be found with a travelling show. Information to Mr. Supt. Hall, Police Station, TUNSTALL, Stoke- on- Trent— Bow- street, February 5. Wanted in the borough of Kendal, on a eharge of stealing £ 6 10 « . on the 30th or 31st ultimo:— ALEXANDER STARKEY, a grocer's porter, has a pedlars certificate granted at Kendal on 3rd November last, lie is about 20 or 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, swarthy complexion, propor- tionate build, dark brown hair, a little hair on face, rather sandy ; dressed in a blue cloth overcoat, with belt, black felt hat, and lace- up boots. He posted a letter at Nottingham on 31st ultimo, addressed to Kendal, the letter did not contain any address, but the envelope bore the Station Street post- mark thereon. He left Kendal on the morning of 31st ult., and had a browu paper parcel with him. Information to Thomas Cotton, Chief Constable, KeNDAL, who holds a war- rant for his arrest.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of ENOS STEVENS, a clerk and collector, wanted at Birmingham, charged under a warrant with embezzling various sums of Money, belonging to Messrs. Cardall and Sons, coal and timber merchants :— lie is 57 yeais of age, 5 fiet G inches high, thin build, grey hair and whiskers, round shoulders, and turns out his feet when walking; dressed in a black coat with velvet collar and billyoock hat. Information to J. Farndale, Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM.— Bow- itreet, February 5. . t Description of JAMES SUTTON HOLMES, charged on warrant with having, at Bolton, on 29th ultimo, stolen and sold by auction or otherwise a large quantity of Wearing Apparel, Tea, & c., he is about 24 years of age, but looks » lder, about 5 feet 10 inches high, proportionate make, pale complexion, rather sunken cheeks, brown hair, sandy whiskerx and moustache, and has a burn mark at the left of his bottom lip partly hidden by his whiskers ; dressed in light brown overcoat, blue black worsted coat and vest, dark tweed clotu trousers, black Jersey underneath his coat, turn down collar, scarf with pin, and black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Holgate, Chief Constable, BOLTON, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen at Trowbridge on 1st instant:— a black ribbed cloth Vest, with cloth buttons; also a silver Albert with silver Locket attached, containing two photos, young man and young woman. By a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 ins. high, slight built, sides of face and upper lip sbaveD, light brown beard, several inches long; dressed in light tweed coat, darlr trousers, elastic side boots, all very seedy, also necktie but no collar. Stated he was a saddler, and called on the trade for work. Information to Supt. White, Wilts Con- stabulary, TROWBRIDGE— Bow- sireet, February 5. Wanted on a Sheriff's warrant, charged with the theft or embezzlement of £ 204 15s. lOd. :— CHARLES STANLEY THOMPSON, 24 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, ordinary make, fair hair, slight dark brown moustache, no beard or moustache, fresh complexion, and good teeth; dressed in a fashionable dark checked tweed jacket suit, and round felt hat; may be wearing a dark grey Ulster ; resided with his father, at 3, Lyndocli Street West, Glasgow; absconded with the money, which consisted of 184 Pound Notes of the Bank of Scotland, £ 20 in Sovereigns, and 15/ 10 in Silver and Bronze Money, He is given to playing at billiards, and may be found in loose company. It is believed that he intends to leave the country. Police officers are requested to make careful search and inquiry for accused at Shipping Offices, Hotels, Billiard Rooms, & c., and fif found to have Him arrested. Information to A. M'Call, Chief Con- stable, Central Police Chambers, GLASGOW. — Bew- sireet, February 6. Stolen at Fenton, about 715 a. m. on 3icl instant:— a rough blue Overcoat, double- breasted, - three pockets outside with flaps, one inside left breast, velvet collar, black lining, and large black bone buttons ; a black ribbed cloth Suit, to fit a man about 5 ftet 4 inches, cloth butons on coat and vest same material, ' Goldstone' in gilt letters on loop of coat collar, in the vest pocket was a Pawnticket for a Geneva Watch, pledged at Bolton's, Stoke- on- Trent. By a man about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, no whiskers or moustache, shaves clean, dark brown hair and eyes, rather short, and medium build ; dresssd in dark cloth jacket, corduroy trousers, light coloured vest, blue scarf with white spots, old black hard hat, and elastic- side boots ; sup- posed to belong to the neighbourhood of Burton- on- Trent. Absconded from Llanwddyn Water Works on 18st inst., charged with stealing two Ferrets:— DAVID LLOYD, a labourer, native of Llanrhaidr, 32 to 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown bair, whiskers and moustache, grey eyes, slout build, turns his right foot out in walking, has a ' M P O L I C E G A Z E T TE February 5 Stolen in Stockport, about 5 am. on 22nd instant:— a man's blue ribbed worsted Coat, three pockets outside, two inside, black Italian lining, cloth covered buttons, bound round edge, which is a little worn ; a pair of militia Boots, size 8, part worn, stamped inside ; a pair of low Shoes, size 8, toe- caps, nearly new. By a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 ins. high, dark complexion, dark hair, parted down centre and comes rathsr low down on forehead, dark moustache ( slight), and imperial, no whiskers, slender build, and military bearing ; dressed in dirty moleskin trousers, boy's round cap ( stolen), and is no doubt wearing stolen coat, and a pair of stolen boots, he left his old ones behind him. Information to the Borough Police, STOCKPORT.— Bow- street, January 29. of cloth and calico, one of them stating that he had a brother named Parkinson, a draper, at No. 27, King- street, Hudders- field, Who was in difficulties through being bound for another person in a loan society for £ 10u. One of the men is about 55 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slender build, fresh complexion, dark hair and whiskers, round face, and of good education ; dressed in brown mixture suit, black overcoat, low crowned black billycock hat, and light boots; the other is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, and dark hair ; dressed in dark suit, dark mackintosh coat, and low crown black billycock hat. Committed for trial at the next Monmouth Assizes, for burglary :— JAMES ROGERS, a tramp, a native of Stafford- shire, 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate figure, sallow complexion, brown hair, dark moustache, no whiskers, grey eyes, smart appearance, and has the bridge of his nose broken, can neither read nor write, and is a married man ; lived at Ridbrook, in Gloucestershire, some years ago, and worked in tin plate works, Information to Capt. Willoughby Berthom, Deputy Chief Constable, MONMOUTH.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of GEORGE RICHARDSON, a carpenter, committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions for this Borough, charged with stealing a Coat and a pair of Shoes ( recovered) :— 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, small dark whiskers, hazel eyes; dressed in a dark twill coat, brown braided vest, and cord trousers. Description of ALFRED COPE, commercial traveller, wanted on a warrant for stealing Wines, & c., from his masters: — 32 years of age, 6 feet high, fair hair and whiskers ( recently dyed black), thin build, Btoops, and has cast in his eye ; in a native of Handsworth, near Birmingham. Information to Joseph Farndale, Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen in Ashton- under- Lyne, between 10 and 11 a. m, on 31st ultimo :— a lady's gold lever Wutcb, No. 7879, gold dial, has the name of' Hadfield' scratched inside. By a man, a shoemaker, 45 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, small whiskers, stout made, very much pock pitted j dressed in a black cloth suit, very far worn, round billycock hat, light blue tie, with white spots. He is well known at Manchester and Macclesfield, having been convicted of larceny at both places. Information to Mr. George Dalgliesh, Chief Constable, ASHTON- UNDER- LYNE. — Bow- street, February 2. Description of DONALD ANDERSON, a draper, wanted at Old Hill, on warrant, charged with embezzlement : — he is about 30 years of sge, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, pale complexion, grey eyes, slender build, respectable appearance, and a native of Inverness. Scotland. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston, Police Office, BRIERLEY HILL, or Inspector Walters, OLD HILL, near Dudley, Staffordshire— Bow- street, January 31. Absconded on 26th instant, charged by warrant with stealing £ 1,000, the Moneys of the Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Company, Limited: — DAVID BELL, back cashier, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches higb, stout build, full round red fac"), dark sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; wore dark suit, drab overcoat, and hard black felt hat; he is a native of Haddington, Sootland, and speaks with a Scotch accent. The money consisted of one £ 500 Bank cf England Note, No. 72 | E 77267, Manchester, 28th January, 1881, and the remainder supposed in Gold. Will endeavour to go abroad. £ 50 reward will be paid by Bell's late employers for the arrest of Bell, and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to George Williams, Chief Supt., Detective Department, Central Police Office, Liverpool.— Bow- nrect, January 31. Description of THOMAS PODBURY, wanted on a war- rant, charged with embezzling about £ 50 :— he is about 40 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, of medium build, dark hair, bushy dark beard, whiskers and moustache, high cheek boues ; dressed respectably in dark clothes and biilycock hat, and has the appearance of a better class mechanic. Has been employed as collector and absoonded ou 25th instant. He will endeavour to emigrate. Information to J. Farndale, Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM. - Bow- street, January 29. Amended description of the two Asses stolen on 13th iistant, from Broadmore Common, Woolhope, Herefordshire, and advertised iu Police Gazette, 22nd instant and subsequent dates :— one a brown inclined to Bandy- coloured body, white nose and belly, about an inch and half docked off tail; the grizzly- cjloured one has a small brown ovM mark on side of nose, cracked hoofs, and drops her ears forward when grazing. They are both small, low iu condition, and in foal. The man described as supposed to have stolen them wus seen with two donkeys, iu the neighbourhood of Malvern, trying to sell them, on 13th instaut. OH 25th instant, the dead body of a newly born female Child, was founded stranded on the shore of the old Bedford River, Sutton, an inquest was held on 26th instant, when it was shown by medical evidence, that the child was full timed, had bieathed, and that it was dead when put into the water, where it must have been nearly a month.
