No. G378 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1883. { l otlce.— It ii requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may hear the Signature of th* person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed the Kditor, Police Court, Bow Stroet, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that tn information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, aud an attested copy thereof, together with the adTertisemeat, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no oharge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor untut be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offloe Forms 88 and 88a, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. >^ « rtis « mentJ offering rewards must state clearer:—( 1) The cmount of the reward. Stolen from the person in Bolton, on 22nd instant:— a gentleman's gold lever Watch with open face, white dial, • centre seconds, funnel class, dome case, far worn, and num- bered 80,079. A reward of £ 2 will be paid by the owner for information leading* to the apprehension and conv-' ction of the thief or thieves and recovery of the Watch. Stolen by means " of housebreaking at Leatherhead, on 23rd instant :— an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, with steel Chain attached, case much worn, and has a small hole in it, maker's name supposed ' Thomas, London'. Supposed by two men:— one about 35 years of age, 5 ft. 10 in?, high, dark com- plexion ; dressed in black pilot jacket, cord trousers, and soft black hat j the other about 24 years of age, B feet 6 inches high, full face, ;. nd has a few whiskers; dressed in a grey tweed jacket, with white slop underneath, cord trousers, and black cloth cap. During the rjght of 17th instant, a shoe factory at Disborough, was entered, aud eleven pairs of boy's Boots stolen therein :— two pairs golosh Bala, red and black waist, black heel, black eyelets and hooks, pointed toe- caps, size 2 ; two pairs Garibaldi's sealed throat, elastic- sides, straight toe- cape, finished same ab above pair, siz? s 12 and 3 ; three pairs golosh Derby watertights, seal lips, straight toe- capa, finished as above, sizes 3 and 5 ; two pairs boy's kip, watertights, peaked toe- caps, studded heel and too point, sizes 13 and 3, finished aa abov9 ; one pair plain kip, studded bottoms, straight toe- cap5, unfinished, size 5 j oue pair kip, Derby watertiahts, studded toe and bea), finished as above ( all rivetted). HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field at Bromley, Pensnett, on night of 27th instant:— a brown mare Pony, about 12 hands high, cut mane and tail, white blaze down the face, Bhod all round, 5 years old, and has not been worked, is very wild. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston, BRIERLEY HILL.— Bow- street, Jan. 31. RICHARD SWAIN, advertised in Police Gazette of 24th instant, has been apprehended.— Bow- street, January 31. Wanted for stealing a Horse ( recovered), at Biiston, on 23rd instant:— a mac, about 30 years of age, looks older about mouth, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, light brown hair, cut short, clean shaved, slender build, slightly pock- pitted, both corners of mouth chopped, speaks black country dialect, ba3 the appearance of a jockey or groom ; dressed in light cloth suit, tight fitting, and lace- up boots. Information to Chief Supt. Longden, BILSTON, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 29. Stolen during the night of 8th instant, from a stable at Potter Brompton :— a b! a; k cart Mare, 7 years old, 15 hands 3 inches high, small star on foreheid, lorg switch tail, long lair on log?, a scar cn off- side thigh, bind leg, a few grey hairs on nose; a Saddle, maker's nam3 ' Beswick,' on flap; a double- reined Bridle, ' Beswick,' stamped cn bit; also an old Halter. Information to John Farrah, Supt. of Police, Police Station, NORTON, Malton.— Bow street, January 26. The man charged with stealing a Horse and Gig at Penrith, Cumberland, on 21st October last, advertised in the Police Gazette on 30th Oct, has not been apprehended. He is from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, and rather stout figure. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Fowler, Constabulary Office, PENRITH, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, CARLISLE,— Bow- street, January r> 6. Wanted under warrant, on a charge of stealing a yearling Heifer ( recovered), at Vicars Cross, near Chester, on 19th instant:— RICHARD SWAIN, resided at Guilden Sutton, Cheshire, farm labourer, 22 years of agj, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionate build, small dark whiskers and moustache, and has a cast in both eyes ; dressed in a light- coloured jacket, dark trousers, round billycock hat, white muffler round Leok, and lace- up boots, very far worn. Infor- mation to Detective Inspector Downes, Constabulary Station, BISHOPSFIELD, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- stree', January 24. Stolen, about 6 a. m. on 9 th instant, a bright] bay Hack- ney Mare, 15 hands 2 inches high, 5 years old, white mark on near hind leg, white mark on forehead, thick rough mane, rather a locg tail but docked, fresh scar on off side of face, about the size of a florin, has a long coat, and is shod for heavy cart work. Also, a set of brass- mounted Harness, patent leather saddle and collar, leather back strap, galvanized chains on traces, leather reins with brass buckles, black half- way ; value at £ 5. Also Shandry, black varnished, wheels lined with red, one spoke in one of the wheels not lined, newly put in ; front splash board broKen off, black Americas cloth cushions, one seat with stoppers and one without, has the name of ' T. Partington, Edge Green, Golborne,' painted in white ou the back. By EDWARD FISHER, who was in the owner's employ for two months, and is now wanted under warrant; he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers, but dark brown mous- tache long at the ends, lost front teeth of both jaws, thin features aud pale lookicg, ha3 a mole under right eye, crossed flags aud crown on right arm, and a woman on his left arm, two women cn his breasts, and imitation cuffa tattooed on wrists, ha'f way round ; dressed, when last seen in Wigan, in a grey tweed reefer jacket, black cloth trousers and vest, black billycock hat, and elastic sido blosk- fronted boots.. £ 5 reward will be paid on the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and lesovery of the stolen property. LARCENY A2* D EMBEZZLEMENT Description of DONALD ANDERSON, a draper, wanted at Old Hill, on warrant, charged with embezzlement : — he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, pale complexion, grey eyes, Blender build, respectable appearaace, and a native of Inverness, Scotland. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston Police Office, BRIERLEY HILL, or Inspector Walters, OLD HILL, near Dudley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 31. Absconded on 26th instant, charged by warrant with stealing £ 1,000, the Moneys of the Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Company, Limited : — DAVID BELL, bank cashier, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, full round red fao, dark sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; wore dark suit, drab overcoat, and hard black felt hat; he ia a native of Haddington, Scotland, and speaks with a Scotch accent. The money consisted of one £ 000 Bank cf England Note, No. 72 77257, Manchester, 28th January, 1881, and the remainder supposed in Gold. Will endeavour to go abroad. .£ 50 reward will be paid by Bell's late employers for the arrest of Bell, and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to George Williams, Chief Supt., Detective Department, Central Police Office, Liverpool.— Bow- meet, January 31. CHARLES BALDWIN, advertised in Police Gazette of 26 th inatant, wanted for Fowl stealing at Cholsey, has been apprehended, and committed for 6 weeks.— Bow- street, Jan 31. Description of THOMAS PODBURY, wanted on a war- rant, charged with embezzling about £ 50 ;— he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, of medium build, dark lair, bushy dark beard, whiskers and moustache, high cheek bones ; dressed respectably in dark clothes and billycock hat, and has the appearance of a better class mechanic. Has been employed as collector and absconded on 25th instant. He will endeavour to emigrate. Information to J. Farndale, Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM, - Bow- street, January 29. Amended description of the two Asses stolen on 13th iastant, from Broadmore Common, Woolhope, Herefordshire, and advertised in Police Gazette, 22nd instant and subsequent dates :— one a brown inclined to sandy- coloured body, white nose and belly, about an inch and half docked off tall; the grizzly- coloured one has a small brown oval mark on side of noBe, cracked hoofs, and drops her ears forward wMn grazing. They are both small, low in condition, and in foal. The man described as supposed to have stolen them was seen with two donkeys, in the neighbourhood of Malvern, trying to sell then}, 011 13thMilitant. Information to Supt. J. Smith oTice Station, LEDBURY.— Bow- street, January 29. Wanted on a charge of Fowl stealing at Horwich, at 2 a. m. 27th instant, along with another man now in custody : — a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion ; dressed in dark monkey jacket with horn buttons, and cord trousers, will probably have a recent wound on his head, caused by a truncheon. He is a collier, and belongs to Aspull near Wigan. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, County Police Office, BOLTON.— Bow- street, January 29. Between 2 and 3 30 a. m., on 27th inatant, a dwelling- house at Armitage Fold, South Crosland, was entered, and the folio Tving property stolen, viz. :— a dark drab Scotch tweed Overcoat, marked clown front with vitriol, and laps slightly scorched ; and a slack back Coat, both to fit a man about 5 feet 7 inches high; a a india rubber Tobacco Pouch, marked ' Help yourself;' a Purse, with brass top, and £ 3 2a. 4d. ( consisting cf 3 Sovereigns, a Florin, and a 4d.- Piece). Sup- posed by a tramp, about 35 or 40 years of age, tall, spare juild, and dark beard on chin end ; dressed in shabby dark suit, and black billycock hat; said he was a dyer, and came from beyond Wakefield. Information to Mr. supt. Goodall, West Riding Constabulary, HUDDERSFIELD - Bow- st,, Jan. 29. Charged with stealing a pair of men's Boots ( recovered), on 25th instant, at Oswestry :— two men, oue about 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, round fall face) dark com- plexion, neither whiskers nor moustache; dressed in grey monkey jacket, dirty moleskin trousers, and very close- fitting cap ; belongs to Welshpool. The other about the same age, taller and pale face, with little dark brown moustache ; dressed in black hat and dark jacket. They frequent low public house*, singing, and are accompanied by two young women about their own age, oue is pregnant. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, OSWESTRY, Salop.— Bow- street, January 29. Stolen duiing the evening of 26th instant, from the Three Cups Hotel, in Oxford :— A long gold neck Chain, small links, with oval shaped gold Locket attached, and bruised at back. A silver Geneva Watch, with common pin in bow. A do. Brooch and Ear- rings to match, monogram' B. A. G.' A do. do. embossed. A crystal Brooch, set in silver. A silver do. ornamented inside with gold, size of a crown piece. A silver Brooch, set with Scotch pebbles. A pair of silver screw Ear- rings, pearl tops. A pair of flit silver Ear- rings. An ear Drop, dark brown carved bead. 5 gold dress Ringa— a torquoise, set in gold ; a garnet, set in gold ; 1 garnet and pearls; a two- turquoise aid one pearl, gipsy , pattern ; a two pearls, centre stone missing. A silver Bracelet. A do. plain, ivy leaf pattern. A silver Necklet, thick double Jinks, with a large oval silver Locket attached, ' S. E. P.' on one side, other side plain. A silver Pencil- case, old and discoloured. An ebony Chain, witb ivory Pencil- case attached. By a man, between 20 and 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inp. high, dark complexion and hair, small side whiskers, and brown eyea ; dressed in hard black felt hat and long dark pilot over- coat ; respectable appearance. Head, OXFORD.— Bow- street, January 29. 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T TE January 26 T Stolen from a public- house at Henley- on- Thames on 25th inst.:— a brown Shawl ( since recovered) By a mao between 30 and 40 years of age. 5 feet 9 inches high, tuft of hair on chin, and walks very erect* dressed in light brown reefer jacket, dark trousers, red striped stockings, and hard rouud hat; states he is a saddler, and calls on harnessmakers in different towns for employment. Information to Mr. Supt. Coates Police Station, HENLEY.— Bow- street, January 29. Stolen in Stockport, about 5 a. m. on 22nd instant:— a man's blue ribbed worsted Coat, three pockets outside, two inside, black Italian lining, cloth covered buttons, bound round edge, which is a little worn ; a pair of militia Boots, size 8, part worn, stamped ioside ; a pair of low Shoe?, size 8, toe- caps, nearly new. By a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 ins. high, dark complexion, dark ha> r, parted down centre and comes rather low down on forehead, dark moustache ( slight), and imperial, no whiskers, slender build, and military bearing ; dressed in dirty moleskin trousers, boy's round cap ( stolen), and is no doubt weariDg stolen coat, and a pair of stolen boots, he left his old ones behind him. Information to the Borough Police, STOCKPORT.— Bow- street, January 29. Wanted for stealing six tame Fowls, from Easton, on 16th instant ( recovered):— a tramping discharged soldier, named BILLINGS, sometimes works as a bricklayer's labourer or scaffolder, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 ins. high, stout built, thick neck, fresh complexion, brown hair and moustache, whiskers shaved off, dark eyes, ruptured, and wearing a broken truss ; dressed in old blue cloth coat, velvet cjllar, piece of right side of collar torn off, cord trousers, hard black felt billy hat, lace- up boots, with heel plates, half the plate off one heel; he calls begging at the houses of military gentlemen, and sends in his discharge from the army. Warrant issued. Also wanted for stealing a Ladder, from Colly weaton, on 18th instant ( recovered):— HENRY SCOTT, a slater, native of Sheffield, ;: 5 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, fair complexion, thin face, light sandy hair, heavy sandy moustache, whiskers shaved off; dressed in black faded cloth coat, covered buttons, ticket pocket on right side, cord trousers, black cloth vest, bound with black braid, small blue and white necktie, lace- up boots, with cloth tops, much worn, brown cloth soft billy hat, stitched, tattooed on one arm. supposed left; sometimes works as a labourer or striker in blacksmith's shops. Warrant issued. Information to Mr. John F. Noble, Deputy Chief Constable, or to Inspector Alexander, OUNDLE, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, January 29. Description of JAMES ROBERTS, native of Snitterby. Lincolnshire, charged under warrant with having stolen a', Scunthorpe, on 20th instant:— a silver lever Watch, No. 14102, blue hands, white dial, with gilt figures, a gilt circle inside the figures, chain attached ( being part of a silver guard), initials • J. 8. H.' inside case. He is from 35 to 38 years of age 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate build, sallow com- plexion, black hair cut short, black moustache and whiskers, shaves through at chin, thin face, high cheek bones, dark brown eyes, bald place on crown of head, tattooed on left arm with an anchor and other marks ; dressed in white flannel jacket, lined with red and white check, two pockets outside with laps, dark cord vest with sleeves, trousers of similar material, fitting tight in leg, was wearing two shirts at the time he absconded, one a black and white check, the under shirt a grey worsted one, dark J muffler, black soft billycock hat, grey worsted stockings, and strong lade- ilp boots, he also wearsa brown leather belt, took with him a white cord vest witl moleskin back. His parents reside at 7, Ashton New Road, Preston, Lancashire. Will frequent public- houses, where he sometimes performs Punch and Judy. Information to In- spector Dain, WINTERTON, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, Jan. 26 Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing Fowls at Cholaey on 18th instant ( recovered):— CHARLES BALD- WIN, labourer, 22 years of age, B feet 11 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers, light moustache : dressed in a dark pilot jacket, with blue sergo jacket underneath, dirty mole skin vest and trousers, black leather gaiters, high crowned soft billycock hat, red handkerchief round his neck, and heavy lace- up boots, lias impediment in his speech, when talking colours very much. Information to James Borlase, Supt., WALINGFORD.— Bow- street, January 20. Wanted on a warrant for embezzling about .£ 20 at Hemel Hempstead :— JOSEPH REDDING, a journeyman butcher, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, medium build, small light moustache, email light whiskers on cheeks, no beard, light brown hair ; usually dressed in grey clothes, and hard round hat. Information to Mr. Supt. S. Chapman, HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, Herts. - Bow- street, Jan. 26. Absconded from StokesJey, on 9lh instant, charged on a warrant with larceny as a bailee :— GEO. HARRISON, about 40 years of age, about 6 feet high, dark complexion, dark hair, whiskerB and moustache, which is rather inclined to curl and parted behind, bald from forehead to crown of head, slender build, is a watchmaker, shabby genteel appearance, and good address ; may be found calling] upon watchmakers, or might endeavour to get a situation in some theatre; native of Stokesley, and is supposed to have worked in Leeds ; dressed in a dark tweed suit and black hard rouud felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Hutchinson, North Biding Consta- bulary Office, sOUTH STOCKTON, or to Acting Inspector Stones, Police Station, STOKESLEY, via. Wanted for committing a robbery at Royal Oak Inn; Wrecclesham, on 22nd instant:— a man about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in dark grey coat, pockets outside, bard felt hat, dark vest, daubed with paint, dark trousers, side spring boots, has the appearance of a painter, fair complexion, small whiskers and moustache, rather a long nose. Had in his possession a mahogany coloured writing desk, about 15 inches by 12, brass earners, So. Information to Frederick Pike, Superintendent, Police Station, FARNHAM. — Boie- ttreet, January 24. Stolen from Ambrose House, Worthing, between 6 and 8 p. m., on 21st instant:— a lady's silver Geneva Watch, crystal glass, No. 18924, with steel chain attached ; a gild cameo ( four birds drinking at a fountain) Brooch ; a pair silver brilliant Earrings; 4 gold rings, one with three rubies, one chrysolite, one with green stone with several small white stones round it, ono antique with hair worked into a cottage landscape ; a plated Knife, Fork, and Spoon, • Child's Birthday Present'; 5 Sovereigns, and 8s. Cd. Silver. Supposed by a man, about 5 feet 10 inches high, difik com- plexion, dark' moustache ; dressed in long dark coat and black haul felt hat. Iuforoiation to Supt. Stolen from a coach- house at Townsend, Kingswinford, Wwwtu 4 p. m. 19th, and 11 a. m, 20th instant:— a Tricycle, Wolverhampton make, ^ wo large wheels in front, one small Wheel behind, colour— d?- Vk groundwork, yellow stripes, brake rather loose, wood seat Vith bJtfe cushion, a chain on two small wheels, brass caps oisfwo large wheels. Supposed by a man about 20 years of age, about 6 feet 4 inches high, medium build, fair complexion ; dressed in dark grey tweed jacket, light- coloured trousers, aid dark cap ; who was seen about 6 31 ^ m. the 19th instant, pushing a tricycle along the Wolverhampton and stourbridge- road, and going in the directicflbf Stourbridge and Kidderminster.
