Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offender!, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of ( he person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %• Whenever it is dosired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter!) addressed to the Editor tunst be prepaid) otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ol Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded en War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The tmount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They Bhould he signed er accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the proporty, without khe apprehension of the offonder. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in Manchester, on 12th instant :— a gold lever Watch, No. 1655, iniiiils enj back ' J. T. A.,' had attached a gold curb Albert Chain, with Seal appended, on which is monogram ' C. J. B.' £ 5 J e ward will be paid by the owner, on recovery of the watch, guard, and seal, or in proportion thereof, and conviction of thief or thieves. Infor- mation to the Detective Department, Town Hall, MANCHESTER. — Bote- street, January 19. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 4 and 10 p. m., two houses at Rugby were broken into and entered by breaking a pane of glass and lifting the sash of the back window, one on the 13th, the other on the 14th instant, evidently by the same persons, and the following property stolen :— a lady's small silver Geneva Watch, plain face ( open), French make, No. 23214 ; a double- cased German silver verge Watch, number not known; a small silver Geneva Watch, cream coloured face, one hand missing, sup- posed minute hand ; a gold- plated Albert Guard j a long silver Guard ; a leather Purse, containing 14s. in 2s. pieces ; a plain meerschaum Pipe, highly coloured, with amber mouth- piece ; an amber Cigar Holder ( short), and case lined with red velvet; a lady's long brass Guard, snake pattern. Stolen by means of shopbreaking on lltli instant:— a gent's single- breasted blue worsted morning Coat, two pockets in laps behind, one do. in breast, Italian lining, and covered buttons; a grey tweed Chesterfield Overcoat, striped Italian lining, two pockets outside with flaps, and made to fit a boy about 16 years of age ; and a boy's small mixture Vest. In- formation to J. Jackson, Chief Constable, SHEFFIELD.— Bow- street, January 15. Between 9 p. m. on 8th instant and 6 a. m. on 9th instant, the lockup shop of Mr. Geo. Lewis, of Park Street, Welling- ton, grocer and provision dealer, was broken into by means of forcing the back door with two chisels, one about lialf- an- inch, and the other about one inch wide, and two Hams stolen ( out of salt about a fortnight). Stolen from the Railway Tavern, situate at Norton, • between 1 and 5.30 a, m. 8th instant:— a black pilot Overcoat, nearly new, double- breasted, two rows of black bone buttons, 3 pockets outside and 1 inside left breast, lined with red and black woollen lining, medium size; a blue pilot reefer Jacket, plain collar, double- breasted, 2 rows of black bone buttons, a narrow piece of cloth let in on the left side below the button holes, about 4 inches long, 3 outside pockets, and 1 inside left Jbreast; a pair of men's strong lace- up Boots, nearly new, brass eyelet holes, with hooks at top ; a pair of men's light lace- up Boots, much worn, newly heeled, with small pieces outside the soles, one upper leather loose from the sole near the heel; an old grey cloth Jvest, faded, with new black twill back. Entrance effected through the cellar door, which was left unfastened. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, BROWN- HILLS, or Sergeant George Whalley, HEDNISFORD.— Bow- st., January 12. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Trysull, near Wolverhampton, between 10 a. m. 7th, and 3.30 p. m. 9th instant :— 4 Sovereigns, a litttle Silver, and a double Blanket, nearly new, with a border round consisting of four small blue stripes, with a larger stripe in the centre of dark colour. Information to Inspector Barrett, Police Office, TETTENHALL ; or to Sergeant J. Hammond, WOMBOURNE, near Wolver- hampton.— Bow- street, January 12. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen between 8th and 13th instant, from a field in the parish of Cbalfont St. Giles, Bucks:— 20 Oid Down Ewes, various breeds, and not marked. Also within the above date:— 13 Old Down Ewes, of various breeds, from a field in the parish of Iver. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, SLOUGH ; or to Inspector Chaplin, Police Station, BEACONSFIELD, Bucks. — Bov- street, January 17. Stolen at Penwortham, near Preston, between 8 p. m. 10th and 7 30 a. m. 11 instant :— a brown Horse, aged 4 years, 15 hands 1 inch high, rough hair, long tail, has a wart on near side on sheath, heavily shor', and has one shoe sharpened. Information to Mr. Supt. Beetham, County Police Office, CHORLEY, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 15. Stolen about 12 midnight, 9th instant, frcm a stable at Clive Vale, Hastings:— a small black rough coated Pony, white spot on off hind leg, long tail and mane, aged ; a set of old Harness; and a small 4- wheeled Van, body painted blue, odd wheels and shafts. To men were seen to take it away, but cannot be described. Information to Mr. W. M. Glenister, Chief Supt., HASTINGS.— Bow- street, January 12. Stolen fromBinnington, on 9th instant:— a black carting Mare, 7 years old, 15 hands 3 inches high, small white star on forehead, long switch tail, long hair on legs ; an old Saddle, 1 Beswick' on the flap ; a double- reined Bridle, ' Bes- wiek' stamped on cheek ; and a Halter. Information to John Farrah, Supt., NORTON, MALTON.— Bow- street, January 12. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen in Dudley on 16th instant:— a patchwork bed Quilt, newly lined with calico ; 2 white table Cloths ; a pair of new brown calico Sheets ; 2 yards of brown Calico, and a common Knife and Fork. By a woman who had lodged at the house, about 30 yeara of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, was wearing a long imitation sealskin jacket. Stolen at Little Haywood, on 12th instant :— a pair of boy's new Boots, size 9, nailed with Welsh hobs ; and a blue check bundle Handkerchief By a tramping shoemaker, 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, slender build, light brown hair, light complexion, badly pockmarked, native of Leeds ; dressed in black cloth trousers and vest, brown tweed jacket, dark brown overcoat, with black velvet collar, nearly new, black and white muffler, soft brown billycock hat, and elastic- side boots, with sbam buttons. Information to Captain Oswell, Deputy Chief Cohstable, STAFFORD, or to Sergeant Goodwin, GREAT HAYWOOD, Stafford.— Bow- street, Jar),. 19. Description of WM. EDWARDS, who is wanted at Chelmsford, charged on warrant with stealing a quantity of Furniture ( recovered) :— he is a brass finisher, and has worked as a button turner, a native of Birmingham, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair complexion, light whiskers and moustache, looks ill; dressed in brown over- coat, grey trousers, hard felt hat, and violet and white scarf round neck. Has with him his wife, also a native of Bir- mingham, and 2 children, one in arms, the other about 3 yrs. old, is about 27 years of age, 5 feet high, brown hair, pale face ; dressed in a black frock, grey shawl with light border. He is well known at the Goldsmiths' Arms, Little Sutton- street, Clerkenwell, kept by William Ward ; Rose and Crown, Sutton- street, kept by Asker; Iiole- in the- Wall, Baldwin's- gardens, Leather- lane. He has worked for Hopkins, 40, London- road, Southwark, and for Land, gas fitter, High- street, Stratford. Information to the Supt. of Police, CHELMSFORD.— Bow- stieet, January 19. Charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 58, the Monies of the ' Sergeant's mess,' at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Shoeburyness, Essex, on 4th instant:— ALFRED JOSEPH RIPLEY. Battery Sergeant, Royal Artillery, 24 years of age, 5 feet LOI inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, no whiskers, long nose, thin face, slim figure, born at St. George's, Manchester, is a sign writer, and is well educated; he is supposed to be in London, as his uniform was booked for Shoeburyness at Fenchurch- street Railway Station, on 11th instant, and the address was in his hand] writing; he is known to Mr. Brash, 7, Cambridge- gardens, Notting Hill, and also at the Gaiety Theatre, Strand, London. Information to Mr. Supt. Hawtree, Police Station, SOUTHEND, Essex, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, January 17. Absconded from Market Drayton, on 23rd November last, charged ou a warrant with larceny as a bailee :— EDWIN BALLING EE, about 45 years of age, 6 feet high, moustache turning grey, very little ( if any) whiskers, bald on top of head, hair turning grey, rather large mouth, thin fea- tures and medium build ; has been a soldier, walks very erect, is very talkative, and of drunken habits, is a barber or hair- dresser, occasionally mends umbrellas, and is supposed to be a native ot Derbyshire or East Staffordshire. He left Market Drayton by North Staffordshire Railway on 23rd November last, accompanied by his wife and several small children, and booked for Derby, himself and family, and con- signed his furniture to Nottingham and was seen in Notting- ham same day, in which neighbourhood he is now supposed to be residing. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, WHIT- CHURCH, or to Sergeant Merricks, MARKET DRAYTON, Salop, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, Jan. 17. Absconded, charged with larceny and receiving:— a dealer, 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair, whiskers and moustache, prominent eyes, Jewish appearance; usually dressed in dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, hard felt hat ; frequents sale rooms. Has been residing in neighbourhood of Wnitechapel, may endeavour to leave the country. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan 1' olice, January 17. Description of FANNY SHARRATT, wanted on war- rant, charged with stealing a silver Watch ( recovered), at Legcett, on 11th instant:-— she last resided at Longton, Staffordshire, domestic servant, 16 years of age, about 5 feet higb, fresh complexion, pale face, brown hair, cut short across forehead, proportionate build, broad shoulders, native of Man Chester, single; dressed in au old grey winsey dress, black hat, trimmed with black velvet, elastic- side boots, no shawl or jacket on when she absconded, but is supposed to have bought a new shawl at Newcastle, after she pledged the watch. Will very likely be found in some brothel; was bon- victed at Long ton in November last, for - stealing money. Information to' Mr. George Harston, Supt. of Police, STONE, Staffordshire, or Sergeant Parsons, Police Office, MADEIEY, Newcastle- under- Lyme, who holds the warrant for her arrest. — Bow- street, January 17. Description of CHARLES LORAM, a baker, native of Exeter, who absconded from Teigumouth, Devon, on 9th instant, charged on warrant with embezzling several sums of Money :— he is 26 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh com- plexion, black hair and moustache, very small whiskers, large head, prominent forehead, and slightly round shouldered; dressed in light brown West of England cloth suit, and brown bowler hat; he took with him a new dark brown overcoat, with bone buttons to match the colour of the cloth; he worked in London in 1880 and 1881, supposed in the neighbourhood of Brixton. Information to Mr. Supt. Moore, E Division, Devon Constabulary, CIIUDLEIGII, or to Sergsant Bright, Police Station, TIJIONSIOUTH, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bme- street, January 15. Description of J. W. MATTHEWS, wanted in Sheffield, for stealing three photographer's Lenses :— he is 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, thin face, sandy hair and moustache, is of gentlemanly appearance ; a photo- grapher, and supposed to be a native of Manchester. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension ; photo at this office. Information to Mr. J. Jackson, Chief Constable, SHEFFIELD.— Bow- stree', January 15. Wanted on warrant for stealing at Bilston, on 8tk instant, £ 3 in Money :— JAMES SMITH, a labourer or boatman, 55 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, slender build, bald on top of head, shaves chan except chin which is grey ; dressed in old dark tweed jacket, very ragged dark vest, moleskin trousers, red neckerchief, heavy lace- up boots ; is well known to boatmen on the Shropshire Union Canal. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Longden, BILSTON, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 15. Wanted for stealing Pigeons :— a man, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches higb, dark complexion, full round face ; dressed in blue pilot cloth overcoat, cord trousers, strong boots, blask billycock hat, far worn. Information to County Police OL'tice, OLD TRAFFORD, Manchester.— Bow- street, January 15. Stolen at the ' Castle Inn,' Bishops Castle, on 8th instant: — a double- breasted brown Overcoat, drab lining, pockets outside, one inside left breast, ticket ditto outside on right breast ( torn), and patch on wrist of left sleeve. Supposed by a tramp, middle aged, about 5 feet 6 inches higb, whiskers under chin turning grey ; wearing a billycock hat, white slop, and corduroy trousers. Information to Mr. Supt. Caswell, CIIURCHT SRETTON, or te Sergeant Williams, BISHOPS CASTLE, Salop.— Bow- street, January 15. Stolen during the night of 11th instant, from a plate- layer's hut on the Cambrian Railway, near Ellesmere :— a brown cloth monkey Jacket, lined wiih brown material, a patch of unbleached calico on lining inside, only one button on at the top, the others are all off, one pocket inside left breast, and one an each hip outside. Supposed by two tramp- ing labourers : one about 45 3 ears of age, about 5 feet 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, and small sandy whiskers and mous- tache ; the other about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, very dark complexion, and dressed in dark clothes. One of them must be wearing the stolen Jacket, as an old one was left behind. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, OSWESTRY, or to P. S. Walters, ELLESMERE, Salop.— Bcw- street, January 15. POLICE GAZETTE January 19 Absconded from Kenley, Salop, on 12th instant, charged on warrant with stealing ± 5 7s. 6d., and an old- fashioned knitted Parse, about 7 inches long, by 2 wide, baa two steel rings, one to draw each way:— JOHN EDWARDS, a labourer, and a native of Shrewsbury, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark bair and eyes, broad features, pale complexion, no whiskers, slight dark moustache, high fore- head, wide mouth, thick lips, down looking, rather stout built, leans forward and turns left foot outwards when walking ; has seived one training in the Denbighshire Miiitia; dressed in an old dark cloth jacket and vest, light cord trousers, black hard hat, white muffler, and clogs. Charged on warrant with stealing a sewing Machine, wood box ; a small wooden papered Box, a dark mixture tweed Jacket and Vest; a witney Overcoat, with black velvet collar ; a pair of watertight Boots ; a small plain Clock, flat top and'dark- coloured wood ; and 6 Ties, at Heath Town, on 16th ultimo :— WILLIAM. HILL, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, slender build, a miner, native of Heath Town, near Wolver- hampton ; dressed in dark suit and hard black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Longden, Police Office, BILSTON, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 15. Wanted at Welshpool, under warrant, charged with stealing a pair of Boots ( recovered) :—- RICHARD BISHOP, labourer, 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair and whiskers,; dressed in old dark or brown jacket, cotton cord trousers, much worn at bottoms, jimcrow hat, and old elastic- side boots ; ha is of drunken habits, and is well known in Shrewsbury, and the immediate neighbourhood. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Ellis, WELSHPOOL, Montgomeryshire. - Bow- stre- t, January 15. Wanted at Dudley, on a charge of stealing three Coats ( recovered) on 5th instant :— a man about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, pale complexion, dark liair, round full face, and broad nojtrils ; dressed in black corded cloth jacket, dark trousers, hard black billycock hat, black and white muffler, and old low shoes, tiad with string ; he is very talkative, and speaks with a strong Yorkshire accent, frequently interpolating, the words ' nay mon,' in his talK. Absconded from Dullingham, Cambs., on 18th ultimo, charged with stealing from the boys' bedroom at the racing stables of Mr. Marsh ; a silver Geneva Watch, maker's name and number not known, a gercian silver curb pattern Albeit Guard, 19s. in Money, and a new low- crowned hard black felt Hat ( maker's name ' S. Golding, Newmarket,' inside :— THOMAS GALTEROUS, a stable lad, 16 or 17 years of aje, small in stature, and looks much younger. It is thought that this lad will seek employment in racing stables in the north of England. Information to Mr. Supt. Long, NEW- MARKET, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 12. Wanted on warrant, charged with stealing two Watches on 9th instant:- SAMUEL EDWARDS, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, ginger whiskers and moustache, light blue eyes, very thin build, and lias a swinging gait when walking; dressed in a dark brown overcoat, black liilycock hat, auS light brown mixture suit. He is a watchmaker, but may seek employ, nwut as a billiard marker. Information to Chief Inspector Nortel iff', Detective Department, Town Hall, LEEDS.— Bow- st,, January 12. Absconded from Burslem, on 23rd ultimo, charged on warrant with stealing a pair of Boots, brown clotu tops, button at sides, and toe- capped ( not recovered) :— SAMUEL BROADBERE, bookbinder, 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, slight light moustache, and supposed a native of Malvern, Worcestershire ; dressed in black hard hat, blue pilot cloth coat ( buttons to the neck), and brown tweed trousers. He will undsavour to obtain employment as book canvasser or bookbinder. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, BURSLBM, who holds a warrant. Bow- street, January 12. Charged on warrant with rape, at Ssndford St. Martin, Oxfordshire, on 7th instantJESSE HAWKINS, Steeple Barton, Oxon., 22 years of age, ( but looks younger), about 5 feet 5 inches high, sharp features, fair complexion, light brown hair, which is cat very short on top of head, blue eyes, slender figure, little bow- legged, very slight light moustache, recently Buffered from a bad leg ; dressed when last seen, in white cord trousers, brown slop ( may be wearing a dark cloth pilot jacket on top), cloth cap, with ear caps. May seek em- nloyment on roads, stone- breaking, & c. Information to Inspector William Leech, Police Station, DEDDINGTON, Oxon, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Eow- street, January 17. FRAUDS AIB AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Abacorded from Malmesbury, Wilts, about 8 p. m. on 13th instant, charged - with obtaining 4s. 6d. by false pre- tences :— a man about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches higb, stout build; dressed in dark jacket, trousers rather lighter and dirty, black bowler hat, dark hair and raiber bushy. He stated that he was employed on the line, repairing the telegraph wires. He was traced to Stroud, Gloucestershire, on 16th instant. Information to Supt. Luffman, MALMSBURY.— Bow- street, January 19. Absconded from the neighbourhood of Chichester, since 25th November last, charged on a warrant under the ' Game Act' :— JOHN WALKE R, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, blind of right eye, lame in left leg ; dressed in an old velveteen coat and vest, and cord trousers, will most probably be found at places where hounds meet; he is a well known poacher. Information to Mr. Supt. Clarke, County Police Station, CHICHESTER.— Bow- street, January 17. Absconded from Hitchin, Herts, on 2nd instant, charged with obtaining Money under fake pretences :— JOHN MERRY, formerly an agent for the Mutual Friendly Society, about 31 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, whiskers and moustache the same colour, whiskers coming off to a point on the chin, very slightly built; he walks very quick and takes short steps, and turns his right foot inwards when walking; dressed in a brown mixture overcoat, grey trousers, black hard felt hat, and elastic side boots. Information to Mr. J. Reynolds, Supt. of Police, MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Committed to H. M. Prisos at Northallerton, for two calendar months hard labour, tor larceny at Middlesborough : — THOMAS SMITH, 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 iaches high, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, brown hair, broken nose, several scars on forehead ; dressed in old fancy black cloth coat, mole- skin trousers, imitation sealskin vest, coloured cotton necker- chief, yellow striped cotton shirt, brown cloth cap, and lace boots, native of Dublin, a puddler. States that he has resided for some years in Sheffield, Manchester, Bradford, Leeds, and other towns in Yorkshire. Information to E. J.
