Whenever it, is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and tho Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion, Al no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, a8S Letters addressed to the Editor COilUS be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and af Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. SMITH, alias CHARLES CLARK, charged on warrant • with stealing four Heifers ( since recovered), from Greenhill, uear Sheffield, on 22nd ultimo :— 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 ins. high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, cut short, full face, dpan shaved, circular cut over and round the left eye, broad shoulders and chest, small waist and hips, rather thin legs, slightly bowed, supposed to be a native of Fussiogfield, Suffolk, where he has two sisters ; " when last seen was dressed in long black top coat, dark worsted corded cloth under- coat, brown ribbed cloth trousers aud vest, low ciowned hard felt hat, and elastic- Bide boots ; has the appearance of a groom, and has worked in livery stables, and has driven cabs at London, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Yarmouth, is known among cabmen and stablemen, and is fond of talking about horse dealers and horse dealing, he has worked a Bhoit time as a farm labourer ; he has been convicted in London, tor horse stealing. Stolen from a field at, Stapleford Abbotts, during the night of 15th instant:— a bay nag Gelding, aged, 15 hands 3 itches higb, over very much on fore legs, switch tail, and in good condition. Description of WILLIAM BROWN, alias BROWNEY, wanted on the charge of stealing a Pony, at Ratcliffe- on- the Wreake, on 13th instant ( since recovered) :— about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark brown hair, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, sallow complexion, has lost several upper front teeth, and speaks rather hoarsely, native of Derby, served about 5 years iu the 6th Regiment of Foot, lias rather au awkard rolling gait when walking; dressed iu brown mix- ture suit, long blue overcoat, and hard black billy hat. Since his discharge he has been hawking salt, and collecting old iron with a pony and cart, iu company of his father, now in cus- tody, and stays at low pnbiic houses or common lodging houses. Information to Mr. Deputy Chief Constable Moore, Constabulary Station, Belgrave, Leicestershire. — Bow- st., December 22. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen from Chorlton- cum- Hardy -— a pair of men's lace- up Boots; a dark cloth Coat, with black velvet collar, dark lining, black composition buttons ; a pair of white Stockings; a dark ribbed tweed Vest, single breasted, cloth covered buttons, and striped lining; a blue silk Handkerchief, with light check border, and a black and red striped Necktie. Supposed by a man wlu had the appearance of a navvy; dressed in white slop, and white moleskin trousers ; black whiskers. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- slreet, December 29. Wanted at Upton- on- Severn, on a charge of stealing two blue pilot cloth Overcoats, on 25th instant, the property of Mr. Lewis, farmer, Chaeeley Court, one of the coats is a man's size, and been worn some time, has a rent under collar at back ; the other a boy's, and but a littlo worn ; both coats have velvet collars, with pockets outside:— a farm labourer, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches higb, fair com- plexion, brown hair and moustache, had on an old soft ribbed hat, dark stuff j icket, cord trousers, strong lace- up boots, be may be wearing one of the coats. Information to Mr. Supt. Turner, Upton- on- Severn.— Bow- street, December 29. Absconded, charged with embezz'ement:— THOMAS EDWARDS, 46 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, dark complexion and hair, grey whiskers, beard ( full) and moustache, lost front teeth and ri^ ht leg, walks with a crutch; dressed in dark clothes, high black hat, a shoemaker. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, December 29. Absconded, charged with embezzlement:— WILLIAM KEMP, 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, grey hair ( bald top of head), dark ( heavy) moustache, turning grey, dark eyes; dressed iu fawn- coloured overcoat, velvet collar, light speckled trousers, brown felt bat, side- spring boats; a collector, formerly a butcher, wife's friends reside at Leith. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Groat Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Pi lice, Dictmber 29. Wanted or. warrant, charged with embezzlement: — JOHN GEORGE CHANGING, solicitor's clerk, 18 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, clean face, little or no moustache, slight build, upright; dressed in low fashionable felt hat, wide brim, short cutaway coat, dark tight fittiug trousers, dark brown melton overcoat, chesterfield, stand up collar. Supposed to frequent billiard rooms and concert halls. Information to James Perry, Chief Constable, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- ttreet December 29. Stolen at Haslingden, between 3 and 7 p. m. 19th inst,:— a pair of elastic- sido Boots ( recovered), and a light drab cloth riding Coat, which will fit a youth about 18 years of age, has two pockets in hips, one outsido left breast, and ticket pocket, which have lids over, also a pocket inside right breast, round raised teams, lined with brown material, cloth covered buttons, and has ' Kino, Brothers, Manchester', on tab of collar. By a man who gave liis address as 27, Every- street, Manchester, who pledged the Boots at Mr. Ilaslam's pawn- shop, Blackburn, about 6 p. m. the day tho robbery was* com- mitted ; he stated that he was a painter and decorator, and left a good situation in Manchester about 6 weeks ago ; that he was going to Preston, and thence to Barrow- in- Furness ; he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches higb, dark brown hp. ir, bushy dark beard and moustache, full round face, and av » ry pleasant looking man ; dressed in the stolen coat, bjack hard billycock hat with flat top, dark trousers and shoes. He wore a dark t veed coat and vest underneath the stolen coat. This man is supposed to be a painter, and to be now wanted at Burnley for stealing a Coat on 16th instant. Information to Mr, Supt. Henderson, County Police Office, Bacup.— Bow- street, December 29. Absconded from Hope under Dinmore, on 13th instant charged with stealing £ 1 : — the driver of a steam thrashing machine, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, Btout build, fair complexion, light brown hair and whiskers, Tound shouldered, and hang* down his head when walking ; dressed iu a blue monkey jacket, cord trousers, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots, all new. He may seek employment at farm houses. Information to Mr. Supt. Strangward, County Police, Leominster, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his arrest— Bow- street, December 27. Stolen from a farm building at Lvmm on the afternoon of 22nd instant:— a black worsted Trousers and Vest, nearly new, to fit a man 5 feet 9 inches in height. By a tramp, sup- posed dark complexion, stout build, about 40 year; of age, 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in blue pilot monkey jacket, over white slop, uppers of boots were slit as though wearer was suffering from corns. Absconded from Ipswich on 21 st in* t.. charged on warrant with stealing £ 47 2s. 8d. :— SAM. TfLLETT, 32 years of age, about 5 feet 7. ius high, hazel eyes, light brown hair and moustache, no whiskers, swarthy complexion, weight about 10 stone, baa received injury to right eye, which causes the aye- lid to draw towaids the nose, and he is in the habit of pkciog his livid against his nose ou this side ; served 8 years iu the 84th Regt. of Foot; was. bought out; and is well kuown at Great Yarmouth in Militia Reserve; dressed in small black coat, brown trousers and vest, long blue pilot cloti: o, erc- a:, < ouud hard felt hat, spring side boots, jyfcolo fronts, red and black plaid scarf, loose on neck, and no collar. Has relatives residing at Norwich, Norfolk. Information to H. R. Russell, Lt.- Col. Chief Constable, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., Dec. 27, Stolen during the evening of 25th instant, in Hertford :— 4 gold Rings. 1 small Geneva silver Watch, open faced, without a glass, No. 4059,7. 1 gold Chain, necklet with pendant, blue enamelled, with garnet in centre. 1 bottle of Whiskey, labelled ' Taplow, Marvland Point, Stratford.' 1 bottle of Brandy. 1 small gold Necklet and Locket, containing the portrait of a young lady with [ fair h. ir, frizzed, and a blue ribbon on top of head. 1 pair of gold Ear- rirgs, fringed. 1 gold Cross. 1 gold border of a Brooch, with gold pin and without a back, about the size of a 2s. piece. Three men are suspected. Oue about 30 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 inches high, with full brown moustache, and dark eyes ; dressed in dark overcoat and black hard felt hat. Another,' about 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, full face, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in » , long drab overcoat, and low black hat with flat crown. The third, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout build"; dressed in drab overcoat and round felt hat. The above men can be identified. Information to Head Constable . Tarrett, Boro' Police Office, Hertford.— Bow- street, December 27. Stolen at Dodslev. Leigh, during the night of 19lh inst. : - 3 grey and white Geese, 1 brown and white Gander, 1 Turkey, 1 grey Drake, 1 black Duck, and 1 brown Duck. By a man, about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark whiskers round face and chin slightly turning grey, top lip shaved, and fresh complexion ; woie a long dark coloured overcoat, dark soft billycock hat, and patent leather legcings He came by the last train from the Potteries to Leigh on the night of 19th instant, and carried a dark coloured wooden box, tied with cord, black iron handle at, each end ; he booked for Stoke by v 37 a. m. tr* in from Leigh, with the same box. Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Police Office, Leek, or to Sergeant Boon, Towu Hall, Uttoxeter, Stafford.— Bow- street, December 27. Description of a man suspected of stealing ou 25th inst., from a house where he had lodged for a few nights, and who has absconded, £ o .2s. in Money; a gold- framed oval Brooch, containing hair in glass, about 2 inches long ; and a gold Locket, about an inch long, with shield iu front, and red and brown hair in glass behind, Ithe brooch has its pin broken, but it has a ring fastened behind to suspend it round neck ;— he is about 35 years of age, said to be under 5 feet high, fair complexion, light hair, rather long, parted in centre, very few if any light whiskers and beard, light moustache, slightly pockpitted, stoutiah build ; dressed in an old black ribbed eloth coat and vest, much worn, old light grey trousers, black low felt hat, wears n, breast scarf, with a whitish glassy looking headetl pin, black overcoat, with black velvet collar, heavy lace boots ; states he is a German, and a watchmaker', calls upon the trade to ask for work, he had a card in his possession with the name of ' Browett, Westfidd House, Coventry,' upon it, whom he stated he bad worked for. December 15 Stolen from a dwelling- house at Stockport, about 7 30 am., on 23rd instant:— a gentleman's silver lever Watch, No. 66588, bad a small bit chipped out of dial near figure 10. By a man who lodged at the house three nights, and stated lie was a groom or stableman, about 31 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion and hair, dark side whiskers and slight moustache, stout build, round face, big head ; dressed in dark tweed suit, and had a dark vest with bright buttons under the tweed one, dark ribbed overcoat, black hard felt hat, silk neckerchief, ties with a double knot, lace- up boot.?. Stolen frcm the persons of several children, about G p m , on 23rd instant:— the following property, viz., a pair of boy's lace- up Boots, new, pointed toecaps, size 4, watertight tabs, rivetted, white soles, had a pair of black hair socks inside, hooks on front; a pair of boy's lace- up Boots, levant tops, pointed toecaps, size 12, loose tabs, rivetted, with hooks up front, new ; a suit of boy's brown corduroy Clothes, second size to fit a boy 12 years old, new; a pair of corduroy Trousers, brown, boy's ; a woman's black satiu Skirt, three flounces round bottom, a little worn at pockets; a twill calico Sheet, new. By a woman, who stopped them and sent them errands, and absconded with their parcels, 35 years of age, stout build ; dressi d in black and white striped thawl, aud black bonnet with flowere. DE JOUGH, late of 41, Newton- road, Wc- Btbonrue- grove, 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair whiskers, beard, and moustache, Roman nose, and Jewish appesrance ; dressed in green overcoat and high hat. Has a brother re- siding at 24, Giaricarde- gardens, and father at 2, Lambellow- road, Belsize- square, St. John'e- wood. Stolen from a public house at Dunstable, on 20th inst. a gold Watch ( recovered) :— By a man about 26 years of age, 5 ieet 5 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair aud moustache, dark eyes, rather stout figure ; dressed in a ( lark ribbed coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt billy hat, sidespring boots. Stolen from Wellington, Salop, on 22nd instaut:- an inch and a half paring Chisel;; 4 nail paasors ; 3 sprig Bits, an axe; and an oil can— all marked on handle'J. Harvey'; an 6- inch Square ; and an ha'f- inch Chisel, marked ' Mathew Martin'; also 2 gilpin Chisels, the oue an inch and a h » ' f, and the other three quarters of an inch, marked ' J. Corbett.' By a tramping carpenter and joiner, about 45 years < f age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, hair turning grey, heavy sandy moustache, turning grey, no whiskeis; dressed in very long brown overcoat, black Muiler hat, cord trousers, and strong lace- up boots. Had the appearance of a forgeman, and frequents brothels and low public- houses. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Jones. County Police Office, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, December 27. Absconded, charged with embezzlement:— JAMES WILSON", 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown complexion and hair ( turning grey) ; dressed in brown over- coat and soft felt hat. Wanted, charged on a warrant with embezzlement:— WILLIAM FRYER, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion, very small side whiskers, and respectable appearance. Known on Y Division. Infor- mation to Inspector MnWilliam, Detective Department, City of Loiidcn Police, 26, Old Jewry, . London, E. C .- Bow- street, December 23. Description of FREDERICK KAY, a commercial tra- veller, late of Travis- place, Sheffield, why is wauted here on a warraut charged with embezzlement:— be is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout build, light hair and moustache, small whiskers on sides of face, aud of gjntlemanly appearance. He absconded on 5th instant, and is supposed to have lett the country. Information to Mr. John Jackson, Chief Constable, Central Police Offices, Sheffield. — Bow- street, December 22. dark dress, dark hat; she has been in custody for like offences at Clewer, Berks. Found in their possession a new pair of lace- up Boots, and a new red and white silK Handkerchief. Stated that they bought them at a shop close to the Market at Reading. Information to Mr. Supt. Samuel A. Vickery, Weymouth.— Bow- stree', December 29. Found about 8.45 a. m., 19th instant, in a field off Upper Chorlton Road, Stretford, the Dead Body of a new- born male Child, wrapped in brown paper ami tied with strong string ; the navel string had not been tied.' There were no marks of violence on the body. Pawntickets found in the house of WALTER WILLIS, who is remanded to 29th instant :— at the pawnshop of Martha Hardon, 41, Ogden- streer, Manchester, 31st Oct. / 82, a 2- foot Rule ; 18th Oct. / 82, a Jack Plane, marked ' T. W. Moss' ; 13th Nov. / 82, a Trying Plane, marked ' B. Gregory'; FRAUDS AIB AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Wanted on three charges of fraud on 18th instant, at Wirksworth aud Middleton -— RALPH HOWSLEY, late of Elton, about 55 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, full face, grey hair and stout built; dressed iu brown or drab coat, woollen cord or cord trousers. He is well known to butchers, cattle dealers aud farmers. He will very likely be found iu some low public or lodging house. Information to Supt. Sharpe, Wirkswortb, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 29. HENRY WILLIAMS, described in Police Gazette of 20th instant, wanted for fraud at Hastings, ha< been appre- hended, and stands committed for trial at the Borough Quarter Sessions to bo held ou the 8th proxim".
