Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, ic is indispensably necessary that » n information should he made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insortion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ot Absentees and Deserters frem the Militia, should he forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, » bove, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. - Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The • mount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person hy whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tae persons forwarding tkem. Monday, December 25, being Christmas Day, the " Police Gazette " will be Published on Saturday, December 23. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 28th ultimo, the dead body of an infant male child, was found on the top of a hedge at Plantation- terrace, Dawlish, Devoi., - Wrapped in a piece of brown paper, with ' H33' marked in black lead thereon, and tied acro3S with a piece of cord :— the child was about 6 weeks old, of a fresh fair colour, blue eyes, with light hair, inclined to be red, and the bones of the skull were fractured. At an adjourned coroner's iuquest held on 5th instant, a verdict of ' Wrlful Murder against some person or persons unknown'was returned. ,£ 50 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government, to any person, other thau a person belonging to a police force iu the United Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State for the Home Depart- ment, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually com- mitted the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. ' ' Wanted on a warrant, charged with forgery :— JAMES ERASER, No. 9, Highwood- road, Upper Holloway, a clerk, 25 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, straight dark hair, and moustache ( very slight), long nose, projecting ears, dissipated look; dressed in shabby dark clothes ; native of Tain, Ross- shire, Scotland. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, December 20. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at 8.15 p. m., on 15th instant, a silver English lever Watch, No. 36674, maker's name Peter Holland, Swinton. Information to the Boro' Police Station, Stockport.— Bow- street, December 20, Stolen from the person at Bradford on Gth instant, for which a man named FRED. TURNER has been appre- hended :— a gent's gold lever stop Watch, centre seconds, white centre, sunk chronograph dial, chronometer balance, full jewelled, 18 carat dome cases, oval shield and garter on back of cases, No. on dial 7 | 2914, ancl on movement 72914. A man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, had a moustache, and wore dark clothes, was in the company of the above, and has not yet been apprehended. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, — Bow- street, December 13. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Froyle, Alton, on 14th instant:— A large size dark blue Overcoat, pilot, cloth, velvet collar, red and black plaid lining. Supposed by a tramp, an Irishman, about 35 years of age, about 5 ft. 10 in. high, large blue eyes, thick bushy whiskers, dark hair, pro- portionate build ; dressed in soft white hat with wide band, cord trousers, light brown coat. May be wearing stolen over- coat. Information to Mr. Supt. E. Paine, Hants Con- stabulary, Alton.— Bow- street, December 22. Stolen from a lock- up shop iu Kendal, between 8 p. m. 15th, and 7 a. m. 16th instant, by means of breaking a pane of glass in a window, and thereby effecting an eutrance, and stealing therefrom :— eleven fancy Boxes of crystalised Fruit, of various sizes, of the value of Gs. Information to Thomas Cotton, Chief Constable, Kendal, Westmorland.— Boio- street, December 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking ( by placing a ladder at a . bedroom window), at the ' Swan' Inn, Longbridge, Hatcham, between 730 aud 920 p. m., on I3th instant:— 14s, in Bronze and about 303. in Silvef, from a club box. Supposed by the same party who committed a similar offence at Mapledurwell, near Basingstoke, as advertised in the Police Gazet te of 4th iustant and subsequent dates. A turn- ing saw and putty knife ( both quite new), 7 skeleton keys, 2 wood wedges, a pair of woolleu socks wich felt bottoms, and other articles were left, behind by the thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. Bennett, Berks Constabulary, Newbury.— Bow- street, December 18. Absconded from Runcorn, charged with breaking out of the dwelling house, duriDg the night of 15th instant, and stealing therefrom, a black cashmere Cloak, with hood, and lined inside with dark fur ; a light- coloured japanned Cash- box, size 9 inches by 4 inches, and brass handle; and a pair of lady's elastic Bide kid Boots, with patent leather toecaps, 14 or 15 buttons up the sides :— a girl, 18 years of age, medium height and build, fair complexion, light ejes with a peculiar cast, brown hair, cut, very short all over the head ; dressed in a dark green stuff dress, small kilting at the bottom ard two pockets behind, the stolen boots, aud an imitation sealskin hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, Cheshire Constabulary, Runcorn.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 13th instant : — a pair of men's strong lace- up Boots, repaired at side on sole ; a do. do., shooting do. in good conc- litiou ; a claret coloured old merino Dress, trimmed with claret coloured velvet; a pink check print Dress, has button holes worked in, but is without buttons, gathered flounces: atr old green striped Dress; a gent's dark brown Chesterfield Coat, with throat strap, horn buttons on ; a lady's gold dress Ring, broken, set with rubies and opals ; a do. do. set with amythists aud pearls, one stone missing; and a fine ribbed cloth cut- away Coat, black satin lining, Anderton's make. Information to Central Police Ofi'ne, Sheffield.— Bow- ttreet, Decvmber 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Sheldon, 9th inst. : — a Musical Box, 12 ins. by G ins , plays seven tunes, light walnut case, the left end drops dowu for winding ; a pair of gent's elastic side Boots, patent leather, size 9, recently soled and heeled. Information to Mr. Supt. Yard ley, Acocks Green, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, December 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field at Stapleford Abbott"*, during the night of 15th instant:— a bay nag Gelding, aged, 15 hands 3 itches high, over very much on fore legs, switch tail, and in goad condition. When taken had two hiud shoes off. Infor- mation to Mr. Superintendent Lennon, Constabulary Office, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, December 22. Description of WILLIAM BROWN, alias BROWNEY, wanted on the charge of Btealing a Pony, at Ratcliffe- on- the Wreake, on 13tli instant ( since recovered) :— about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark browu hair, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, sallow complexion, has lost several upper front teeth, and speaks rather hoarsely, native of Derby, served about 5 years in the Gth Regiment of Foot, hns rather an awkard rolling gait when walking ; dressed in brown mix- ture suit, long blue overcort, and hard black billy hat. Since his discharge he has been hawking salt, and collecting old iron with a pony and cart, in company of his father, now iu cus- tody, and stays at low public houses or common lodging houses. Information to Mr. Deputy Chief Constable Moore, Constabulary Station, Belgrave, Leicestershire. — Bow St., December 22. Stolen from a field at Haydon, near Clieltenhaam, ou 9 111 instant:— a dark biown half- bred Mare, 3 years old about 14 hands 3 inches high, in good condition, hind feet white, white star on forehead, small white spot about the size of a penily on near side of ccntre of neck, small white stripe across fore foot over the hoof, and a small lump on near knee as if from a blow. Aiso, the same night, from a field close by, a dark brown half- bred Horse, aged, about 1 Stands high, hind feet white nearly up to the hocks, white star ou fore- head, switch tail, saddle marks on withers, in good condition. The owner of ths mare will give £ b reward on her recovery if stolen, and the apprehension and conviction of the thief, or if strayed, all reasonable expense will be paid on the recovery of either of these liora33. Information to Mr. Supt. Day, Contsabulary Office, Cheltenham,— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen from a field by the side of the Fosse Road, leading from Six Hills to Leicester on the Wreak, during the night of 13th instant :— a dark brown mare Pony, 6 or 7 years old, 13 hands 3 inches high, white patch ou off side, near the shoulder, few while hairs inside each knee, knees slightly chipped, and in good condition. £ 2 reward will begivtu to any person who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the pony, and the conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Deputy Chief Constable Moore, Constabulary Station, Belgrave.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen from a field at Gilfach Llanwnog, during the last 3 months :— I Ewe and 1 Wether, Limbs, a cross betweeu Kerry Hill and Welsh ; mottled faced, raddled across back in two places, pitchel on cross ' E. I.' ear marked, left ear point cut off and slit, and right a notch in point; also during the last 3 months from Blaincerniog Carno, 4 Ewe Welsh, pitched on nearside ' T. R.'. raddled a spot on shoulder, ear marked, a fork in point of each, left and right. Informa- tion to J. Dauily, Esq, C. C., Newtown, or to P. C. Hum- phrey, Caersws, Montgomery shire.— Bmo- ttreet, December 13. Stolen at Bishops Stortford at 4 p. m. on 5th instant:— a large dark browu Mare ( since recovered), at OaHey, Essex. By a man about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high about 28 years of age, clean shaved, rather stout build, and is cri|. pled in the left arm, has the appearance of au ostler or cabJriver; dressed in black cloth coat and waistcoat, with white waistcoat underneath, worsted corduroy trousers, lace- up watertight boots, hard black felt hat, aud blue necktie, tied in a sailor's knot. After selling the horse on Gth instant, he went to Saffron Walden, where he lodged at the White Horse Inn, on the Wednesday night; he appears to know Leeds well, lie left Saffron Walden on Thursday morning, by the up train, stating that he was going to meet his father in London, having first supplied himself with a new pair of shoes, new check woollen shirt, scarf, and dark blue knotted cloth over- coat, all cf whHtJ ,5 is now wearing, having left his old shoep, shirt, & c. behind ; tie is wearing the same trousers as he. wor, . when he stole the horse, and has a scarf pin ( brooch pattern), silver colour. He is also wanted for a robbery at Newmarket, on 28th ultimo, and a robbery on 1st instant, at the Mitre Hotel, Cambridge, where he stole a Great- coat, belonging to a cab proprietor, whose pocket- book and name was in the stolen coat. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ryder, Couuty Constabulary, Bishops Stortford, Herts.— Bow- street, Dectmber 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Description of FREDERIOK KAY. a commercial tra- veller, late of Travis- place, Sheffield, who ia wauted here on a warrant charged with embezzlement:— he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches higb, rather stout build, light hair and moustache, small whiskers on sides of face, and of gentlemanly appearance. He absconded on 5th instant, and is supposed to have left the country. Information to Mr. John Jackson, Chief Constable, Central Police Offices, She'lield. — Bow- street, December 22. Stolen ou 8th instant:— a gentleman's silver lever Watch; a gent's gold Aloert Guard, diamond square pattern, each link thick in centre, aud graduates to each end, has a small gold Locket; a Pendant, oval shape, chased on one side and blue enamel on the other, also £ 2 in Gold, ( Watch recovered). By supervisee WILLIAM ANDREW BAR a ATT BARBER, alias WILLIAM BARRATT and WILLIAM BARBER, a felt hat finisher, 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, proportionate build, brown moustache, but may shave it off, face very much s arred last week ; dressed iu black ribbed worsted coat and vest, tweed trousers, new elastic side boots with buttons on side, new black hard felt hat. Left here about 9 p. m. on 10th instant. He is well known amongst hatters at Denton, Hyde, Ashton, Gee Cross, Nuneaton, Atherston, Duintable, and was apprehended at Maryport, Cumberland, in November, 1880, for a similar offence here. Photo on application. He is also wanted under the Preventiou of Crimes Act, for failing to report himself. Information to the Stockport Boro' Police.— Bow- street,, December 20. Charged on a warrant with stealing £ 1 10s. in Gold, and 30s. in Srlver, at 1, Alfred- street, Saint Leonards, on 7th instant: — THOMAS LUCK, a jobbing gardener, who absconded the same day, about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown bu3hy beard ; dressed iu an old blue pilot jacket, turning brewn, cord trousers, lace- up boots, and narrow rimmed round hard hat ; said he came from Fliruwell; convicted ill the name of CHARLES LUCK, at Hastings, for fraud, and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment in Lewes Prison, on 4th April, 1881, and is since believed to have beeu for some months an iumate of the Kent County Lunatic Asylum, at Barming Heath ; was formerly a coachman and gardener, in service at Ore, Sussex. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Gleuister, Central Police Office, Hastings.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen at Sunderland, about 6 p. m., on 16th instant :— 4 lady's small gold Geneva Watches, 18 carat cases, gold dials, eugraved backs, all new, Nos. amongst the following, viz., 5465, 176663, 170664,171884, 1060, and 73906 ; a gentleman's gold lever Watch, seconds hand, gold dial, black chapters, No. 19910 or 49910 ; 4 gold Alberts, 9 carat, fancy pattern, all new. December 15 Absconded, charged on warrant with obtaining, on 14th oltiino, by false pretences, a gold j- plate open- face Lever Watch, patent Key in pendant, four jewels, makers ' Ba. rr. ind and Lund, No. 2- 8868 ;' 4 lady's gold Alberts, scratched on swivel ' o- x- x, L c- x, p. o- x, p or x,' one wneat- leaf pattern, with two bole rings attached to drop; a gold Locket, one diamond in star setting ; and a gold plain flat bangle Riug ( not recovered) :— ROBERT WOOL WARD, 2G years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, dark hair and moustache, little or no whiskers, sallow complexion, long upper lip and rather sunken ; dressed in dark clothes aud deerstalker hat. Friends reside at Athol House, Knatchbull- road, Camberwell, London ; his father is captain of a steamer iu the Royal Mail Line. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective De- partment, 26, Old Jewry. London, E. C .— Bow- street, Dec. 20. ROBERT BROMLEY, alias WILLIAM HAR- GREAVES, advertised in the Police Gazette of 21st August last, has not yet been apprehended, he is charged on warrant with stealing a gentleman's gold Auger Ring, set with an oval shaped blood stone, and £ 4 10s. in gold, at Whitehaven ou 12th August last, also charged with larceny at Parton on the following day :— he is 28 years of age, 5 feet inches high, pale complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, whiskers and mous- tache, chin shaved, a hotel porter, and is a first class mus cian, and of good address ; dressed when last seen in a dark grey tweed suit, and lo~ v crowned soft felt hat, wears a pair of eye- glasses, which he carried in his waistcoat pocket. He is an expert hotel thief, and has been several times convicted. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Bird, Constabulary Office, White- haven, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, December 20. Absconded from Jackfield, charged with stealing £ 23 in Gold, Silver and Copper :— THOMAS HENRY COULSON grocer's assistant, 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high ruddy complexion, and black hair; dressed in a light grey mixture sn, t, round black hat, and lace- up boots ; a native of Gatacre, near Bridgnorth, where his mother now resides Information to Mr. Ivins, Deputy Chief Constable, Welling- ton, or to Sergeant Turner, Madely, Salop.— Bow- street, De- cember 20. Stolen in Charloltte Row, Ellesmere, about 7 a m. on 16th instant:— a dark grey speckled cloth Jacket, man's size, pockets on hips aud one outside each breast; two white pocket Handkerchiefs with coloured borders in pocket; a pair of man's light lace- up sparrabled Boots, brass eyelets, toe.- apped, and have been soled and heeled; a small olive wood Work Box, about 12 inches long, containing reels of Cotton, Needles, Pins, & c, and 2s. in Money. By a tramping labourer, a native of Dunham Hill, Cheshire, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, stout build, round face, fresh complexion, very short hair, dark brown whiskers around face, his left hand is frost- bitten, and he wears a black glove on it; dressed in the stolen coat and boots, white mole- skin trousers and vest, and small round black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt, Gough, Oswestry, or to P. S. Walters, Ellesmere, Salop.— Bow- street, December 20. Charged with larceny ofja Watch at Mouut Pleasant, on 16th instant:— JOHN HOG AN, 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 iuches high, fresh complexion, clean shaved, proportionate figure, walks erect, and speaks the south of England dialect; dressed in a grey Btriped tweed coat, cord trousers, white muffler, soft white billycock hat, and lace- up boots, much worn. The w itch has been recovered. He is a member of the Bricklayers' Unior, a. hd calls upon secretaries of that association for assistance. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunn, County Police Office, Durham.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen in Westhoughton, about 5 p. m., 8th instant:— a fine wool shoulder Shawl, broken cheek pattern. Supposed by a woman, who with her husband £ was traced to West- houghton Railway Statiou, where they booked by the 5 58 train to Manchester. She is 20 years of age, 4 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, stout build, and has a cut mark on left of face ; dressed in plum- coloured skirt, light stuff jacket, new plaicl shawl over her head, white linen aoron and new clogs. Her husband is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, dark hair, slight dark moustache ; dresced in dark cloth jacket, blue cloth trousers, cap with ' bob' at front, and wore no stockings. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Farnworth, between 9' 30 a. m , 9th, and 10 pin., 11th instant:— a silver Geneva Watch, No. 40,174 ; a silver Neckguard, plain pattern, had a 10- cent silver piece at the end of it ; a woollen shirt ( recovered), a white militia Shirt( recoveietl), and a blue, red, and white striped cotton Shirt. Supposed by a man who had lodged at the house six or seven weeks, a carter, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, stoops when walking, slightly pockpitted, cut marks ou fore- head ; has a habit of leaning his head on one side when speaking to any ore ; dressed in blue pilot cloth jacket, rnole- akiti trousers, patched on both knees, bard black billycock hat, aud lace- up boots ; a. native of Daubhill, Bolton, and is a wwmcted thief. Frequents low lodging- houses and beer- shops. Has relations residing at Worsley, Bolton, and Stocliton- on- Tees Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire, — Bow- itreet, December 20. The man described in Police Gazette of 13th instant, a< s b ' intr suspected of stealing Wearing Apparel, from Royal Oak Inn, Evesham, on 9th instant, has beeu apprehended at Presteigne, Radnorshire, with the missing property in bis po'ss.- siou ; he now stands remanded at Evesham till 19th instant:— he gives the names of JOHN JONES, alias THOS. COOPER, native of Worcester, but has been tramning the country for the last 6 or 7 years, getting employment occas- nionally as a baker : he pawned a silver Waich, No. 25 629, m Cheltenham, iu November last. Information to Mr. Supt. Kemp. Per shore, - or to Sergeant Ganaertou, Evesham, Wor- cestershire — /' ow- street, December 18. Absconded, charged with embezzlement:— EDWIN S. BAILEY, clerk, Charity Organization Society, 46 years of age, 5 feet. 8 inches high, slim build, concplexioii fair, hair ( bald), whiskers, and moustache black ; dressed in chocolate- colomed suit, black felt hat, side- spring boots. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W. Metropolitan Police, Dec. 15. Abscomled on the evening of 7th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 4 16s. 8d. :— JAMES BARBER, 40 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, sallow com- plexion, light brown hair, light heavy moustache, clean shaved, cast iu one eye, very upright, has beeu a soldier and is marked with letter ' D'; dressed iu light tweed soft hat, black frock coat aud light trousers, it is supposed he will try to get on . board a stenmer for America. Information to A. A. Pratt, Head Coi stable, Chichester.— Sow street, December 13. FRAUDS ATO AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Charged on warrant at Hastings, with obtaining £ 12, by means of false and fraudulent pretences, on 5th instant :— HENRY WILLIAMS, describing himself as an architect and surveyor, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 in Ues high, dark compiexiou, hair aud whiskers, medium fijure ; wore a blue pilot cloth overcoat, dark trousers, and high black hat, gentlemanly appearance ; was in company with » woman about 35 years of age, rather short aud stout, dark complexion and hair, wore a dark jacket, trimmed with fur, and dark bonnet. Left on 5th instant, by road, stating be was going to Dover, driving a cream- coloured pony, about 13 hands high, recently clipped, plated harness, and a small pony gig, painted dark green, picked out with white, very how steps, has a standard to fix carnage umbrella in ; had with them two Rugs, a black Gladstone Bag, a brown square basket, containing a small striking clock, and a fiat black, box, upon which was a Bristol label. The woman had with her a small black- aud- tan terrier dog, which she generally carried, Bhe, in conversation, said her home was at Toubricige, Kent.; they arrived at Hastings on 28th ultimo, taking lodgings for a week, and putting the pony and trap up at a livery stable. Williams inserted an advertisement iu a local newspaper, stating that' a gentleman was in urgent need of a temporary loan of .£ 12,' and offering good interest and security ; on getting the money, he gave as partial security two duplicates relating to jewellery pledged at Manchester aud Birmingham. Found in possession of a well known thief and burglar, in custody at Leeds, charged with stealing the same :— a pair of strong rivited waterproof navvy's lace- up Boots, size 9, double row of Dails round the edge of soles, the outer row ot which is square headed, three rows of round headed steel nails down centre of soles, heel plated, and quite new. The pri- soner accounts for them by stating that, he bought them at Newcastle, but when arrested was within a few mile of Leeds, coming from the direction of York:— his name is JAMES BRANNON, alias BROWN, native of Leeds, 22 years of age, 4 feet 11 inches high, sallow complexion, thin face, very thin light moustache, and slight sprinkling of whiskers, dart brown hair, grey eyes, he looks several jeans older than 22 ; dressed in dark coat", small square grey and black check vest., dark mixture trousers, cap ( worsted), with peak, and old cotton shirt, torn at breaar, with metal button at neck, old elastic- sided boots, a size or two too large for him, aud has a thin wiry appearance. He gives his name JAMES BUTTLER, about 64 t. o 68 years of age, 5 feet 2- i inches high, blue eyes, scar uuder left eye, grey hair, clean shaven, oval face, rather prominent month ; dressed in Oxford grey home- made coat, the back buttons gone, pepper- and- salt vest, cotton cord trousers, lace- up boots, nearly new, brown cap ; known to have been convicted in Merionethshire oi felony; supposed to have stolen the Shirts from Cardiganshire very recently ; he is remanded until 20th instant at the To wyn Police Station.
