O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that in information should he made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mn § t be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The • mount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payablo. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'ae persons forwarding them. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. At ( i a. tD. on 14th instant, the dead body of a mule child, abaut 10 days old, wrapped in a piece of old sheeting, about, a yard square, was found in the Strood Tunnel of the North Kent Railway. An inquest was held the same day, and the jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some pe- son or persons unknown.' Information to Mr. Supt. Wanted at Dudley, for stealing Is. 6d. from the person of Caroline Edwards on the highway, at Cinder Bank, Netherton, in the borough of Dudley, about 9 p. m. on the night of 22nd instant : — a man, about 40 years of age, abi ut 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, long dark whiskers, litis a fysh rut- marl, supposed on lejt side of forehead, from a blew i ec - iv d the same night by being struck vith a cams in a struggle with a man subsequent to the above robbery ; dressed iu old dark blue pilot jacket, dirty plaid trousers, and soft black billycock bat. Stolen from the person, about 2 30 p. m., 26th instant, at Bampton Fair:— an old- fashioned bag Purse, containing three £ b Bank of England Notes, Nos, 1st, K 47- 29012 ( dated 10th March, 1882), * 2ud, K 24- 48397 ( dated 10th Jauuary, 1882), 3rd, number unknown ; and .£ 9 10s. in gold, all in Half- sovereigns. Stolen from the person on Cth instant:— a large- sized gold Chronograph, crystal gl- iss, cases deeply chased, No. 30165, had attached a gold Albert, cable pattern, stamped 18 ct., appended a Locket, containing photograph of a lady and gentleman. Stolen from the person at Burslem, on 14th instant:— a small Euglish silver lever Watch, No. 1034, with gold plated Albert and Locket, containing the portrait of a boy attached. Stolen by means of housebreaking at the Smyth's Arms Inn, Long Ashton, Somerset, between 5 and 7 p nr. ou 25th instant:— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, No. 37981, gold dial and steel hands, engraved on outside case a church or a castle, and a gold albert Chain attached with trace links and plain pattern, and a gold Key at the end, with a pale blue stone in it; a silver Locket with ivy or fern leaves engraved on out- side, with a large silver Chain attached ; a silver Bracelet about, | inch wide ; a pair of gold Earrings, with a small stone in centre, and diamond pattern, and a square Russian leather purse with double clasp. Information to Supt. Drewett, Flax Bourtou, or to Sergeant Knight, Totterdown, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, Oc'. ober 27. Stolen by means of burglary, between 12 p. m. 19th, and 5 a. m. 20th instant, from the dwelling- house of Ezra Spittle, Swan Inn, Ettingshal), near Bilston :— a youth's blue pilot Overcoat, imitation sealskin collar, two pockets left side, one on right, and one inside right breast, partly re- lined with different material; a man's light brown tweed Jacket, two pocket left, and one right side ; a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, size 5, toe- capped ; two pairs of youth's Boots, viz, :— one lace- up's, nailed and much worn, the other elastic- side's, plain tops, and toe- capped ; a small hand Saw ; two pairs of Calliper's ( Engineer's); two 2- foot Rules ( wood); a steel Square ; a carving Kuife and Folk, smooth brown handles ; and 5s. iu Money. The burglar is supposed to have cut his hand badly, as a large quantity of blood was fouud on the window which he had broken and gained an entrance through. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Stolen by housebreaking, on the morning of 16th instant, from a cottage at Cardington :— a drab duck Jacket, with pockets outside, bone buttons, lined, with collar check, the lining having a tuck stitched in it; and an old cottou Hand- kerchief in the pocket ; a woollen and cotton Scat f ; and a pair of woollen Stocking*. By a mau, 35 years of ago. 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, dark whis- kers and moustache of about a month's growth ; wearing strong boots, dirty cord trousers, drab slop, carried an old coat on his arm, wore straps round his wrists and round his trousers legs ; had the appearance of a navvy. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen or strayed from a field at Tamworth, during the night of 10th instant:— a bay carriage Horse, 4 years old, 15i hands high, black legs and short tail ; the property of William H. Ballard, Tarn worth. Also stolen or strayed from a field at Tam worth, during the night of 25th instant.:— A thorough bred very daik brown Mare, 3 years old, 14£ hands high, very little hair on mane or tail ; the property of Frederick Harrison, Tam wor th. Both these Horses are in good condition. 5 Information to Inspector Stietton, i olice Station, Tam worth. >— Bow- street, Oct. 27. Wanted at Penrith, charged with stealing, oil 21st inst., a Horse and Gig, which have been recovered at a public- house, at Pendlebury, near Manchester, where he left them on 23rd instant, and borrowed a Sovereign, saying that lie would return iu the evening :— a man, representing himself to be a traveller for Houston, brewer, Barton on- Trent, and the City of Dublin Stont Company. He is about 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, and stout figure ; dressed in a nearly new brownish grey tweed top coat, black diagonal corded cloth coat under- neath, blue vest, daik cloth trousers, all rather shabby except the top coat, and old boots with elastic sides. He had in his possession tome jewellery, which he will no doubt try to dis- pose of. Information to John T. The 2 Bullocks, advertised in Police Gazette of 25th inst. as stolen from Ddolfawr, Llannwchyllyji, on 23rd, have been found straying, and restored to the owner.— Bow- st., OH 27. Found at Leatheihead, on 4tli instant: — a dark brown Gelding, 4 years old, 14£ hands high, scar on near eye, and without shoes. Information to Mr. Supt. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Charged with embezzling the funds of the Margate Working Men's Club and Institute :— EDWARD JULES PETTS, secretary to the above club, a lath render, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, stoops slightly, very sallow complexion, black hair ana moustache, and full black whiskers, a very marked cast in eyes ; dressed in black- diagonal frock coat, light vest, dark mixture cloth trousers, an » l black hard felt bat. Left, for Loudon ou evening of 20th instant, by last train South Eastern Railway. Information to the Chief Constable, Margate.— Bow- street, October 27. Absconded from Hinstock Hall, near Market Drayton, Salop, on 9th instant, charged with stealing on 7th instant, a Sovereign :— THOM AS GIDMAN, 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, dark hair and complexion, no whiskers or moustache, thin sharp features, burn marks on the chin, cut in centre of head quite visible when his hair is parted in centre, and slender build ; dressed in black tweed jacket and vest, light woollen striped trousers, brown hard felt hat, printed necktie with small green headed pin in centre, stable- keeper or groom, and a native of Cheswardine, Salop. Infoi- mation to Mr. Supt. Howells, Whitchuroh, or to Sergeant Mcrricks, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- stnet, October 27. Description of JOHN JONES, a baker, who absconded from Coleshill on 21st, charged with stealing a silver Geneva Watch, with a small piece chipped from the dial:— He is 25 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, light browu hair, light sandy moustache, slight thin features, and slovenly gait; dressed in grey mixture coat and vest, plaid trousers, and hard black billy hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Yard ley, Acocks Green, near Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, October 27. Charged with stealing ,£ 15 in Money at Luton on 25th instant.— T. POPPELSDORli\ alias PAGININl, a German violinist, from 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 3 ins. high, very thin, pale face, black hair and moustache, uo whiskers, wears glasses; dres? ed iu dark mixture overcoat, black trousers and high bat. Speaks bioken English in a quick nervous jerking style. Infoimation to Head Constable Jaquest, Borough Police, Luton.— / O" - street, October 27. Stolen frcm a grocer's shop, at Patricroft, between 10.45 p. m. and 11 p. m. 21st instant:—- a Drawer, containing Gold, Silver and Copper, the amount, cannot be ascertained ; also 4 doz m Penny Stamps ; and a Receipt for stamping weights ; ; fc Old Trafford. Supposed by a man, about 40 yrs. of age, 5 ft. lt> inches high, dark hair ; dressed ia dark clothes, and black pot hat.. Stolen from the vault at the Pine Apple Inn, Openshaw, between 11.20 p. m. 20th instant, and 6 am. 21st instant:— about IPs. or 10s. in Copper, which was in three p iper bags, marked ' Siivef, illCS.' Suspicion attache to a mAf; about zz years of age; 5 feet C inches high, pale complexion, thin fea- tures, brown hair and whiskers. This man was employed at the above- named place about 12 months ago, and obtained the situation by means of a false character. Information to Supt. Jas. Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, Oc'. ober 27. Stolen between G p. m. and 8 p. m. on 20th instaut, at Grosmont, near Whitby :— a. grey mixture union Shirt, nearly new, uiau's size. Supposed by a mau who left the neighbour- hood the same night: — about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, brown hair, dark whiskers and moustache, slender figuie; dressed in jean or fustian jacket, fastened in front with a brace strap, no vest, dark cord trousers, torn at seat, and blue rough cloth cap, with peak, blue and white striped shirt, and is wearing a clog on one foot, and a shoe on the other ; has the appearance of a farm labourer, is supposed to be a Welshman, and well known at Rote dale Abbey and Eaton, where he stated he had worked. Information to Mr. Snpt. Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby.— Bow- street, October 25. Stole? on 21st, instant, from Cefnllwydate Cottage :— a pair of cotton cord Tronser?, newly fronted from below tin- knees up, and footed, and both legs rinsewn. By a tramp, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, dark hair whiskers asd moustache, pale complexion ; dressed in a daik coat and trousers, strong lace- up boots and a cap. Had with him a round hat, which he carried in a guano bag or rice bag strapped over his shoulder, was traced to Brecon on 2lst iust. Information to J. Danily, Esq , Newtown, Montgomeryshire, or P. C. Pryce, Tregynon.— Bow- street, October 25. Charged with stealing a silver Watch ( recovered) ftotn the Commercial Inn, Giaburri, on 8th ultimo :— D AVID THOMAS MATTHEWS, 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 ins. high, stout build, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, a labourer, and last residence Remington ; dressed iu fustian coat and troupers, billycock hat, and a pair of large new heavy navvy shoes. Information to Mr. Inspector Indian, West Riding Constabulary, Setth, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.—- Bow- ntreet, Oc'. ober 25. Description of an Irish labourer, wanted, charged with stealing five Sovereigns, at Stackstead?, on 23rd instaut:—- about 26 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 6 inches high, light corn plexion, slight light whiskers and moustache; diessed in moleskin vest and trousers, blown cloth round jacket, Jace- up boots, with ton- caps, and cap with bob on top ; he generally woiks in stoue quarrie- J or on railways, he has resided at Bedford, Leigh, where he has a sister named Mrs. Leonard. Information to County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- streat, October 25. Charged with stealing fiom the servant's Ivdroom at the Waeu Parai, Neiquis, about G a. m. on 9th insiant, a browu tweed Jacket, pocKets each side arid one inside breast; a pair of dark brown tweed Trousers, with red spots, and Vest to match; and a light coloured cord Vest, with black luin buttons :— TROM AS WILLIAMS. 20 years cf age. 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, daik browu hair, and small matk above left eje ; a farm labourer, resided at UtHPU Farm, Neiquis, near Mold ; dressed iu a bain cap, dark brown jacket with red stripe, daik brown cord trousers, lace- up boots with hooks at top, and cut on one side of one of them, and may be wearing part of the stolen property. November 27 Absconded from Consett, on 2nd instant, charged on a warrant with embezzling several sums or money:— WM. FIDLER, native of Stokesley, N. R. York, Hour store manager, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, rather florid from drink, hair turning grey, stoutjbuild; dressed in a dark suit and hard felt jhat, when last seen. " Warrant, on warrant, charged with stealing seven Ilalf- Sovereigns, at Hailey, Oxon, on 28th ultimo :— JOSEPH KNIGHT, a native of Taston, Oxon, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high ; dressed in old grey suit, trousers patched at knees and seat, ha~ d black felt hat; marine pensioner, invalided in July, 1881, with 5a. lOd. per week, atid is known at the Lambeth Arms Inn, Denhani, Bucks, has received his pension at Uxbridge on previous occasions. Wanted on a warrant, charged with larceny :— EDWIN TURNER, alias BAS11 EUWAKD BURTON, 38 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 11 inches high, stoops slightly, grey hair, cut short, beard, whiskers and moustache ( supposed shaved off) turning jjrey, tattoo marks on both arms; dressed in dark trousers, patched at knees, pilot jacket, patched at back, two vests, one small Scotch plaid, white pearl buttons, one pepper- and- salt mixture, cloth cap with peak ; has been in the army. Information to O. Robotham, Supt., Abingdon. — Bow- street, October 23. Stolen at Whitby, at 7.30 a m, on 18th instant:— a white duck Jacket, with two pockets outside, trimmed with three metal buttons ( nearly new, has not been washed). By a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 incites high, fresti completion, round face, no whiskers, may have a small moustache ; dressed in a dark cloth coat, light coloured jumper slop underneath, bound round the neck and sleeve with scarlet binding, dark cloth trousers, patched at both knees, soft black Yankey hat, and low shoes with red linings. Had the appearance of a sailor, and is supposed to have been in a tishiug boat at Scarboro'. Stated he was making for Sunderland. Informa- tion to Supt. Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby.— Bow- street, October 23. Stolen from the Dolfar Inn, on 4th instant:— a black macintosh Coat, half worn, to fit a short man. By a farm labourer, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, brown hair, cut short, small brown whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in drab coat, cord vest and trousers, jimcrow hat, and ftroDg boots ; supposed to be a native of Herefordshire. He is as described in Police Gazette of 2nd instant, for robbery at Llanfair. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to P. C. Tanner, Kerry, Montgomeryshire. Stolen from the shop of Thomas Davies, tailor, Gwyd- delwern, near Corwen, about 4 p. m., lGth instant:— a pair of light brown woollen cord Trousers, nearly new, would fit a lad 16 or 17 years of age, trimmed with metallic buttons, fly front*, and without lining. By a tramp, front .35 to 38 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown beard and whiskers ; dressed in dark cloth jacket, light cloth trousers and vest, billycock hat, and strong laoe- up boots. Supposed to be in company of a stout lad, 16 or 17 years of age. Infor- mation to Inspector Hugh Williams, Corwen, Merionethshire, — Bow- street, October 20. paper and had not received proper attention at birth. Missing from his home at Winkton, Christchurch, Hants, since 17th inst. :— Mrs. JANE SUCK, 05 years of age, about 5 feet high, fresh complexion, grey hair ; dressed in a black jacket, dark dress, dark Btraw hat, tied down at sides. It is feared that some ill has befallen liar. Information to Mr. Supt. Brinson, Hants Constabulary, Riugwood.— Bow- street, October 27. Missing from her home since 22nd instant:— FANNY II0D30N, of Shallowford, near Stafford, 40 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, and light complexion; dressed in a brown wincey dress, print hood, and lace- up boots. It is feared some ill has befallen her. Information to Captain Oswell, Deputy Chief CouBUble, Stafford.— Bow- street., October 20. Committed to H. M. Prison at Northallerton, for 21 days hard labour, charged with larceny :— WALTER HUGHES, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, light moustache, grey eyes, large scar on lower part of chest; dressed in old brown coat and vest, militia trousers, brown cloth cap, grey striped woollen shirt, and strong lace boots ; a native of Oldham, but for a number of years he has resided with his father John Hughes, 13, Pollitt- street, Rodney- squarn, Manchester. Information to Mr. E. J. Saggerson, Chief Constable, Middlesborough,— Bow- street, October 25. Committed to Reading Gaol, on 16th instant, to one month's hard labour, for stealing an Umbrella ( recovered) :— MARY BEEDLE, 50 years of age, has been a governess, also an inmate of a lunatic asylum ; found in her possession lady's twill silk Umbrella, guaranteed to wear inside, Fox's Paragon Frame, with Partridge cane Btick. Supposed stolen. Committed to Reading Gaol on ICth instant to 14 days h. l., for vagrancy :—" WM. HINE, an Irishman, 64 years of age, one foot deficient, and walks with crutches. Committed to Reading Gaol, on 16tn instant, to 2 mouths' hard labour, for stealing a Coat ( recovered): — JAMES KING, 28 years of age, 5 feet high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair and eyes, long nose, Jewish appearance, large burn mark on left groin ; dressed in black coat and vest, tweed trousers, sido spring boots, hard felt hat, all old and dirty. 1 nformation to Supt. Taylor, Borough Police, Maidenhead.— Bow- street, October 25. FELONIES. { Not otherwise described.) Absconded on 23rd instant, charged on a warrant w ith Rapa :— PATRICK TOWEY ( but occasionally gives the name of JAMES or THOMAS), 45 to 50 years of age, feet 5 or 6 inches high, light brown hair, sandy whiskers turning grey, no moustache, slightly pockpitted ; dressed in a pilot coat, white slop underneath, cord trousers and vest, black hard felt hat, and green and white check neck handker- chief ; he is a farm labourer, and is suffering from the venereal disease. He has a wife residing at Ashbourne, but has not lived with her for some time. May seek admission to a hospital. Information to W. A. Delacombe, Lt.- Col., Chief Constable, Derby.— Bow- street, October 27. Description of a man, wanted for presenting a pistol at a female, and demanding her money or her life, on the high- way, at Bradfield, at 9.30. a. m. 25th instant:— he is about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 ii. ches high, light hair, pale face, no whiskers or moustache, and respectable appearance ; dressed in dark c'othes, supposed wearing cap with peak, and was carrying a small parcel done up in a leather strap. In- formation to Inspector W. Simmonds, Essex Constabulary, Manningtree.— Bow- street, October 27. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Charged on a warrant with obtaining several sums of money by false pretences :— TAMES " W. SEAMOUR, 26 or 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, slight dark whiskers side of face, and moustache, chin shaved clenn, slender build, walks very quick ; supposed to be a grocer; dressed in blue serge suit, round jacket, and black billycock hat. Ilis mode is to advertise in the newspaper; for a grocer's assistant, and when applied to issues a memo randum, headed ' The National Employmert Agency and Mercantile Assistants' Bureau, Northern Branch, James W. No. B 1066, discharged from the Penton- ville Prison, on 17th instant, when he reported his intention of removirg to Oxford ; 26 years of age, 5 feet 5} ins-, kigh, pale epmplexion, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, has a scar on middle finger left hand, two scars over right eye, mole on right side, hairy mole on right cheek and left of neck, a groom. Was sentenced to 14 days h. 1. and 5 years Reforma- tory, under the Criminal Justice Act, at Shipston- on- Stour, on 29 th May, 1871; 6 months h. 1. at Warwick, on 7 th Jan., 1875, for stealing money ; license forfeited at Worcester, on 25th Nov., 1880, for failing to notify change of address ; and to 6 months h. 1. and to complete his term of 7 years p. s., at Worcester, on 19th Jan., 1881, for receiving stolen goods.
