Notice.— It ii requested that all communication* for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Folios Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The • mount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( S). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t& ie persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. It Is particularly requested that when, owing either to Insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary, INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 25th ultimo, Thomas James, a gigsy, was seriously assaulted at Eastmeon, Petersfield, and has since died from injuries then received; a coroner's jury has since returned a verdict of'Wilful Murder' against WILLIAM JAMES, a gipsy, 26 or 27 years of age, 6 feet 10 inches high, dark com- plexion, dark hair, whiskers, and eyes, cut over eye, supposed right; dressed in dark coat, no vest, plaid trousers, brown hard round- crowned felt hat, heavy boots. Is accompanied by Georgina James, 25 or 26 years of age, rather tall and stout, light hair, lost several front teeth ; has a little boy, about 12 months old ; the woman carries a large basket, such as hawkers use for hawking lace ; may be found at common lodging- houses. Information to Mr. Supt. H. Ransom, Petersfield, Hants.— Bow- street, September 6. Found dead at Ightfeam, en 24th ultimo, a woman, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches long, stout build, sallow com- plexion, dark hair, turning grey, few long hairs on face ; dressed in old brown lin^ sey drees, black petticoat, large plaid shawl, fringe round border, spring- side boots, and black bonnet j found in her possession a small square tin box, con- tainicg a pc. dlar's certificate, No. 98, granted to Magdo Turrney, or ( if. Seerney), of West- street, Henley, Oxford, dated 8th April, 1882 ; also a copy from the Catholic Marriage Register, Fermoy, Ireland, purporting that James Teirney was married to Margaret O'Neil, on the 29th October, 1850, signed Wni. Rice ; the above articles can be seen at the Police Station, West Mailing, Kent. An inquest has been held on the body, and a verdict of manslaughter returned against Mary Ann Carter, who is in custody and committed for trial at the next Assizes to be holden at Maidstone, Kent, information to Mr. Supt. Stolen from the person at Crumpsall, OH 2nd instant :— an! old leather Satchel, containing a leather Purse ( with a Half- Crown and some Copper), some Tea and Sugar, and a Bank Book for .£ 100 in the Manchester and Salford Savings Bank, the name ' Elizabeth Clegg' written inside. C., Deal, Kent.— Bow- street, September 6. Stolen from the person, at the Aston Lower Grounds, on 4th instant:— a gold Englith lever Watcb, centre seconds, maker's name, Ryley Coventry, monogram ' J. B.' on the back, No. [ 13196; and a gold albert Chain, long and round link pattern, and gold Key attached. Information to Supt. Walker Police Station, Aston, near Birmingham.— Bow- ttreet, Sept. 6 Stolen on 29th ultimo, frqm tbe person, at Liverpool Street Station, Great Eastern Railway :— a gentleman's silver ( aver Watch, No. 6417, maker's name J. Stolen from Cosham, by means of burglary, during the night of 1st instant:— 2 Overcoats, one brown ( velvet collar, breast and hip pockets each side), the other old blue; 1 blue ribbed Dress Coat, pockets on hips; 1 snuff- colour Jacket, 1 grey double- breasted Vest, 1 white woollen Scarf; 3 red Handkerchiefs, marked ' J. Whiting, 6'; 1 black round felt Hat ; 1 pair side- spring Boots, toe- capped ; 2 small Prayer Books, one with brass edging and fastening, the other plain ; and a woman's Apron, marked ' M. Smith.' By two deserters from W Battery, 1st Brigade, R. A. :— ( 1), 20 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, fiesh complexiou, blue eyes, brown hair, two scare on back, scar left arm, right leg, and on left side of head ; dressed in stolen clothes ; ( 2), 19 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, fresh complexion, freckled, blue eyes, brown hair, cut over aose, tattooed ring on 2nd and 3rd fiDgers left hand; dressed in stolen clothes. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Brighton, on the evening of 5th instant, between 7 and 10 o'clock, by means of obtain- ing admission through an attic window :— A pearl Brooch, double tier o£ pearls and large yellow topaz in centre. A pair of pearl Ear- ringi to match, can be worn long or short. Two pearl Bracelets in strings, one in small pearls and the other large, both with diamond clasps. A large cameo Brooch, flesh colour and white, subject— Hebe feeding the bird of Love Two cameo Bracelets, broad gold bands, set with small cameos. A long gold Chain, finely chased. A thick gold Necklace with yellow topaz cross, set in gold, five large stones, lengthways, two across, and swivel loop, set with small topaz. A. pair of gold Ear- rings, very beautiful workmanship, divided into three pieces, for wearing long or short. A pair of Malachite Ear- rings, short. A gold Bracelet with two carbuncles, can be drawn tight or loosened. Three small gold Brooches— one lapis- lazuli, the others pale blue. A Ring, emerald centre, surrounded with large sized pearls. A Ring with amethyst centre, surrounded with pearls of smaller size. A Ring, lapis- lazuli and pearls. About 10 other Rings, with various stones and settings. Six mouruing, black and gold Rings, two set with pearls, hair enclosed. Two hair Pins with peail drops. A diamond Brooch and two Ear- rings ( Court set). A large agate Locket with letter ' M' set in 54 small diamonds, hair in the back. An emerald Stone, not set. A Carbuncle, not set. A small open face silver Geneva Watch, No. 10249. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Yalding, Kent, on 4th instant:— a black tweed cutaway Coat, pockets on each hio and left breast, small pocket on right side ; a dark tweed sac Jacket, pockets at each side, one left breast, buttons close to neck, horseshoe pattern bone buttons, top button off; an imitation gold Albert Chain, and a quantity of Provisions. Stolen by means of burglary, at Cheadle, near Stock- port, between 1 and 6 a m., on 6th instant:— a pair of lady's button Boots, nearly new ; a man's check Shirt, nearly new ; a gentleman's alpaca Umbrella, nearly new ; a silver Brooch with beading and bird in centre ; and 2 briar- root Pipes. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Pembury, on 5th instant : — A dark tweed Suit, mingled with small spots ; a dark plaid Jacket; 2 cotton Shirts, blue and white ; a blue Guernsey, stripes round it; a pair heavy Shoes, square nails; a p^ ir half heavy do., tips toe and heel ; 2 unbleached Shirts ; a pair new worsted Socks; a Nightdress ; an old Sheet; a red Handkerchief, white spots; a white Handkerchief ; and 4s. lOJd. in Silver and Bronzs. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Moor Hall Farm Madely, between 3 and 9 p. m. 3tst ultimo :— a canvas Bag, containing £ 5 worth of Silver, chiefly in half crowns and two shilling pieces, a canvas Bag and a leather Purse with clasp, coutaiuing £ 5 or £ 6 in gold. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING < Description of JOHN LANGFORD, alias ' HARD- UP, alias ' JACK THE LIAR,' who is wanted on warrant for stealing two Horses ( recovered) at Ombersley, on 31st ult.:— he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, slight whiskers and moustache, long thin face, large nose, eyes appear weak, and swaggering gait- pressed in old dirty white slop, old tight- fitting wollen cord trousers, lace- up boots cut across the froufc, and old billycock hat; is a drover, and attends fairs and markets; is well known in most of the midland counties. Information to Mr. George Checketts, Deputy Chief Constable, County Police Office, Worcester, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, September 8. The Horse, Cart, and Harness, advertised in Police Gazette cn 4th instant, as stolen from Oiford Cluney on 31st ultimo, have been recovered in London, but the thieves, who attend races, are still ac large.— Bow- street, September 8, Strayed or stolen from a field at Prestwich, on 31st uit. : — a white faced Sheep, marked red on back. Information a1 County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street September 8. Found Straying at Great Marlow, Bucks, and supposed to have been stolen about two months ago :— a dark brown Russian horse Pony, 13 hands high, in fair condition, long- mane and tail, has spaven on near hind leg. Information to Sergeant Maneely, Great Mario w, Bucks..— Bow- st., Sept. 8. Absconded, charged with stealing ten milch Cows :— a man, 50 years of age, 0 feet 2 or 3 iuches high, ruddy com- plexion, full round face, clean shaved, supposed to bear marks of recent erysipelas in nose, stout, big belJy, short legs, tender feet, slovenly appearance ; a butcher, supposed will endeavour to sail for America. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, September 6. Stolen during the night of 31at ultimo, from a field at West Bromwich :— a dark brown Hackney Mare, 6 years old, about 15 hands high, white star on forehead, long ears, near hind foot white, tail cut square, in good condition. £ 5 reward is offered by the owner for the apprehension and con- viction of the thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. Whitehurst, Police Office, West Bromwich. — Bow - street, September 6. The two men, advertised in Police Gazette of 1st instant, for Horse stealing at Bletchingley, are in custody, the Horse is not recovered. They both refuse to give any name and address : - one is about 45 years of age, 5 Let 5 inches high, dark complexion, hair turning grey, little whiskers UD side of face; dressed in long dark- coloured coat, black cloth " trousers and vest, fancy mixture coloured wrapper, and hard felt hat; the other about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, hair turning grey, tuft on chin, crooked nose, scar on foiehead and right eyebrow; dressed in dark diagonal coat, pepper- and- salt coloured trousers, and black hard felt hat. Had in their possession a dark brown Horse, nearlv thorough bred, aged, 15 hands 1 inch high, black points, small 3tripe down forehead, has been fired both fore legs ; a large market Cart, with false springs, aud back springs, three bars at side3 and back, one step broken off, name on cart ' C. H. Wilson, juur., SI, Carlisle- street, Lambeth.' These men aie supposed to be wanted for other cases of horse stealing. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT5 Stolen from a canal boat at Monton Bridge, Monton, at 11 a. m. 4th instant:— an old silver lever Watch, engine- turned cages, which have been dinged by a fall; a pair of 4 P O L I C E GAZ E T T E . September 22 • white fustian Trousers, - with white, bone buttons; a black cloth Vest, double- breasted ; and a chocolate- coloured silk Handkerchief. By a woruaD, about SO years of age, 4 feet 11 inches high, dark brown hair, sallow complexion, thiu face, slender buiid ; dressed in a buff- coloured dress, and dark shawl no better description of her can at present be given. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Man- chester.— Bow- street, September 8. Absconded about 12 noon 31st ultimo, stealing £ 10 in Silver :— EDWARD GOMM, a clerk, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout built, dark complexion, closely cut hair, - dark eyes and moustache, chin slopes in and is very small ; dressed in black coat and vest, daik blue cloth trousers, fancy tie, stand up collar, and wide blue striped pattern shiit. The Tn » n advertised in Police Gazette of 28th ultimo, for stealing a Watch and Guard from a dwelling- house at Rsddish, has since been apprehended.— Bow- street, Sept. i>. The two Beds and Hearthrug stolen from a house at. Harpurhey, advertised in Police Gazette of 23th ultimo, have since been recovered and the thief apprehended.— Bow- street, September 8. Stolen on 5th instant :— From Mr. Weston's watchmaker's'shop, High- street, Hast- ings, a silver Geneva Wa'ch, maker— Bennett, Cheapside, London, No. 4904. From the Hall, at 77, London- road, St. Leonard's, a gen- tleman's thin black cloth ulster Coat, pockets at the sides, a ticket pocket, and one inside breast, two hooks in front below the buttons, black lining ; and a black felt Hat. Also from No. 10, St. Andrew-' s- road^ a brown cloth Vest • with sleeves ( recovered). By a man, between 45 and 50 yrs. of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather thick set, daik hair and rather bushy whiskers and moustache, turning grey, blue eyes; dressed in an old black coat and black billycock hat ; speaks - with Irish accent, and has the appearance of a taiior. Information to Mr. W. M. Glenister, Chief dupt., Hastings. — Bcno- street, Septembe- 8. Stolen from the ' Rurniug Horse' Inn, Swindon, on 5th instant:— a pair of watertight leather Boot?, man's, sise, new heel tips and nailed. Also, from the garden of the adjoining bouse, the propsrty of R) bt. fctr. tnge :— 2 silver- grey doe Rabbits, one in youog. By a navvy, about 27 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion and whiskers, gipsy appearance, stout build, and bouncible manner ; dressed iu moleskin or cord trousers, soft billycock hat, red neckerchief, and dark monkey jacket ( faded brown). Said he had been in the City of London Police. Information to Mr. Supt. North, Wilts Constabulary, Swindon.— Bow- street, September 8. Wanted upon a warrant at Hasting?, charged with embezzlement:— GEORGE DAY, alias BK1DGER, alias BRIDGES, a baker's assistant, about 1.9 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in black coat, brown trousers and vest, red necktie, elastic- side spring boots, and low crowned hat. Information to Mr. Glenister, Chief Supt., Hastings.— Bu\ n-* treet, September 6. Absconded from Washingborough, on 3rd instant, charged on warrant witn stealing £ 3 10s. iu Gold, and 2s. in Silver : — JAMES- LINCOLN, a tramping navvy, 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium built, light hair, clean shaved, freckled face, bus an impediment in his speech, and splay footed ; dressed in black soft billy hat, navvy's slop, brown corduroy trousers, with patch on light knee, brown cord vest, double- breasted, with large white button in front, red neckerchief, red and blue checked shirt, and strong lace- up boots ; this man worked in Hull about 12 months ago, and has a new pilot jacket and vest in pawn there ; his father resides at Guisborough, Yorkshire, and works in the iron mines. Information to Sergeant Cabourn, Kesteven Police Station, Lincoln, who holds the warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, September 6. Description of FliED ELLIOTT, aliasROBB BENTLEY, native of Retfoid, charged on warraut with larceny from a dwelling- bouse : — he is about 24 years of ago, 5 feet 6 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, red face, and is a little lame of° leffc leg, has the appearauca of a groom, very quick on foot, arid will bolt on a policeman's approach, a gipsy ; dressed in brown coat, dark cord trousers, light vest, and small hard black billy hit; well known ac Nottingham, Newark, Grautham, Lincoln. Sleaford, Horncastle, Epwocth, Louth, and BoBton; left Retford on Friday night the 1st instant, will frequent resorts of thieves and prostitute?, and low beer- houses. Description of a tramping plasterer, wanted for stealing from an utfinshed house at JNewpffirt Pagael, during the night of 1st instant :— two plasterers Trowls, ( one nearly new) one bricklayers Trow 1, a white- wash Brush, ( worn) and a brick- layers Apron, ( very coarse wrappin), he is 45 years of age, 5 feet G iucbes high, moustache and hair incltuga to be sandy ; dressed in light coat, mole or fustian trousers, with patches on the knees, a light round hat, and old water tight boots,. oatch on the front of left one to ease the toe, walks badly. The woman advertised in the Police Gazette, of 14th ultimo, for stealing a Shawl from Prestwicb, has since bet- n apprehended and committed to the sessions. Information to the County Police Office, Old Tratl'ord, Manchester.— Bow- street, September G. Stolen during th » night of 4th instant, from an out- building :— a pair of light lace- up Boots, man's siza, brass eye- lets, hooks at top, tips ou heels. Supposed by a tramp about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 iuches high ; dressed in hard hat, brown jacket, and carried a white stick. Information to J. Daniiy, C. Stolen from Strood, on 4' li instant:— 2 Watches, one ailver American, name of ' Oorringham, Strood,' ou works, a gold albert Chain aud Loiiket attached, chain ranch worn ; also a gold Watch, No. 426, maker's name ' John Anderson, Bristol,' a gold Albert ChaiD, plain link?, attached, small red and white granite Seal on albert. SAMUELS, a, Russian Polish Jew, a tailor by trad.-, who lodged iu the house, about i. 0 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, very sallow complexion, large mouth, thick lip?, and parts his hair in centre: dressed in dark tweed clothes and blue black bowler hat. He formerly lived at Gravesend, aud was convicted for stealing rhododendrons from Cobham- park this summer. In- formation to Wax. Brodbridge, Head Coastable, Rochester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Sep- tember 6. Description of HENRY { BURTON, wanted under a • warrant at Rochester for embezzling a silver Watch, on 7th ultimo :— he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light hair, very light moustache, light ginger beard cut short, light blue eyes, very fair complexion, scar on one side of forehead, walks with a short quick step, and carries his head slightly forward ; dressed in brown felt hat, light stripe cloth tweed coat and vest, and light mixture grey tweed trousers ; he is a member of the Antedeluvian Order of Buffalo Benefit Society, and he is likely to apply at the societies for relief. Informa- tion to William Brond bridge. Head Constable, Guildhall, Rochester.— Bow- street, September 6. Wanted, on warrant from the Sheriff, charged with acts of theft from lockfast cellar at the Mansion House, Ardgowan, Renfrewshire :—- JOHN COYLE, labourer, about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, stoutly built, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, small black eyes, sharp features, fresh. complexion; dresses generally ia white moleskin trousers, sleeved vest of dark gVey tweed cloth ; is said to be a native of the parish of Ivillygarvin, Donegal, where his father, Wm. Coyle, resides. Left Arrigowan on 10th July last, saying he was going to the hay- cutting abiut Campsie or Crieff, and may engage in har- vest work ; was formerly a farm labourer, but may be work- ing as a navvy. Description of No. C1304 JOHN GASKELL, aliaer ROBERT ASPINALL, a convict on license, who has left St. Helens, Lancashire, without notifying his intention :— he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionate build, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, round face, mole on neck and scar below knee of right side, scar on head and knee, mole on neck, hip, and shoulder blade on left side, and lost all teeth upper jaw. He was convictad at Bolton for larceny, after previous conviction, on 26th October, 1876, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude and 5 years police super- vision.
