SMotSc ® .— It is requested that . all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon proporty, may bear 61se Sigmafcare of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Polieo Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that en information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is tnado for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Inters addressed to the Editor QIDgi Jie jjfrepaStS, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( I) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will bo paid. Thoy should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by iiie persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. INFORMATIONS. MUEBEE AID MALICIOUSLY WOUIBIIG. On 3rd instant, WILLIAM LEDGER, labourer, of Sluldcu, was murdered on the road between Kimblesworth and Pity Me, his body thrown into a small brook, and Ida Watch and Guard stolen :— an old silver verge Watch, loose case, has ' William Ledger' engraved on inside of outer case, and also on outside of inner case. The Guard is a long single linked silver one, light made, swivel lias been broken and fastens badly. Three tramps are suspected. 1st, about 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache of about a - week or ten days growth, dark com- plexion, round face, stout built, walks erect; dressed in dark jacket and vest, grey cloth trousers, aud dark cap with peak. 2jid, from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, giuger whiskers, bony; dressed in dark coat and vest, soft felt liat, moleskin, cord, or fustiau trousers, had the appear- ance of a navvy. 3rd, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, red face, large nose, clean shaved; dressed in double breasted velvet coat, half worn, and low crowned hard felt hat, wore clogs, and spoke tho Lancashire dialect. Charged on warrant with Forgery :— GEORGE INGLIS POTTS, cashier, 31 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, stout build, brown eyes, sandy hair, long sandy beard, whiskers and moustache ; wearing on leaving here on Wednesday last, about noon, a blue serge suit, low crowned hat. £ 5 Reward will be paid by his late employer on apprehension, and 5 per cent, on all monies recovered. ELLEN EDWARDS, machinist, 4- 4, Sandy- lane, Birming- ham, 45 years of age, 5 feet 21 iucliea high, fair complexion, brown liair, grey eyes, scar on side of left eye, bald top of head ; dressed in black diagonal cloth dolman, trimmed with broad band of satin and fringe, brown stuff dress flounced, brown silk bonnet, trimmed with brown feathers and imita- tion cherries w1th faded leaves, and button boots ; stcutiiiL figure, carried a thick brown woollen scarf shawl. ELIZA SMITH, ironer, 31 years of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, very bright hazel eye?, aud smallpox marks between the eyes ; dressed in black satin dolman, trimmed with fringe and black beads, black cash- mere dress, trimmed with satin, black chip hat with two black feathers and bugles, and wore bright coloured imitation gold eardrops with star in centre. Stolen from the person, on 4tli instant, at Newmarket races :— a gold double- bottomed Euglish lever Watch, lias owners name ' Charles Pilson' engraved on the inside, also a gold albert Guard, long links, attached to which was a two Guinea piece, one Guinea ditto, half Guinea ditto, and small gold Locket, containing the photo of a lady. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT' Description of JOSEPH RE AD, wanted on a warrant charged with stealing a Cheque for £\ 5 on 3rd instant at Cheltenham :— he is about 45 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, medium build, dark sallow complexion, dark eyes and hair, turning grey, rather long dundreary whiskers, clean shaved on the chin; generally dressed in a black frock coat and ve3t, light trousers and round black bowler hat, was formerly employed as a salesman at a furnishing and carpet warehouse, aud may seek employment at such houses, he is lately given to drink and may be found in the company of flarh prostitutes. GJ. :—• HENRY ABBOTT, a professor of music, native of Biackburn, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, oval face, dark complexion, rather heavy moustache, short beard, no whiskers, stout biild, walks erect, carries a walking stick ; dressed in dark or black clothing and silk bat; he generally wears spectacles. Information to Mr. Supt. Henderson, County Police Office, Bacnp, Lancashire, who holds a warrant, - Bov>- streef, July 12. Charged on warrant with stealing a large quantity of railway Chairs and other Metal:— ROBERT RALPH BELL, late a storekeeper in the employ of the London and North Western and Great Western Joint Railways Co's, at Shrews- bury :— he is from 30 to 35 years of age, 5" feet 9 or 10 inches high, proportionate build, dark complexion, a good deal of hair on his face up to his cheek- bones, very dark heavy whiskers, very straight, and cut rather short, dark mous- tache, very prominent nose, the skin of which appears very light ou the bridge, weak eyes, which are at times a little inflamed, dark hair, whieh he brushes close to bis head, aud brings it on to his forehead ; dressed in a dark suit of clothes, respectable appearance, and hard black felt liat. MEDDIJvGS, a shoe finisher, 20 years of age, about 5 feet high, sallow - omplexion, browu hair, no whiskers or moustache, scar on one side of forehead ; dressed in a dark cloth coat, black billy hat, and white hand- kerchief round his neck. The Bicycle has cot been recovered, 8 P O L I C E GAZETTE. August 11 and is a 50- incb, - with. V rim and grey rubber on front - wheel, U lim and red rubber on hind - wheel; painted black, picked out with red ; horn handles, one of which has beon split. Absconded 1st instant, charged with stealing £ 55 in Notes and Coin :— ERNEST FRASER, a potmaD, 30 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, fair hair and moustache; dress, when absconding, a brown cardigan jacket, dark trousers, round hard felt hat, formerly employed at the ' Rose and Crown,' Wimbledon. Description of WILLIAM FOWLE3, of Prees Heath, Salop, labourer, who absconded cn 2Gth ultimo, charged on warrant with stealing a double- barrelled Gun ( recovered) from Tilstock, Salop, on 11th ultimo :— He is between 30 and 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, black hair, dark brown whiskers round face, medium length, black eyes, sallow complexion, high cheek bones, and long visage; dressed in a flat top black muller hat, black cloth jacket with pockets on hips, dark cord trousers, and elastic- side boots ; is of very drunken habits, and fond of low company. Howells, or Sergeant Thomas, Whitchurch, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., July 10, Description of GEORGE WELLS, a labourer, charged on warrant with stealing on 9th ultimo an Over Coat, recovered :— 19 years of age, 5 feet G or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair ( worn short); dressed in dark coat, cord or fustian trousers, and soft billycock hat. Charged with stealing 1 cricket Bat, 2 pairs of leg Guards, etc. ( recovered) :— a man, between 20 and 30 years of age, dark complexion, no whiskers or moustache ; and dressed in working clothes. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, July 10. Stolen at Wilmington, Kent, on 1he evening on 4ih inst.: — a Bicycle, 51 inchea high, all bright, double step, odd nut on little wheel, left side handle split, roller break, hold in rubber of little wheel, and break fastened with indiarubber bands. By two men, who were hawking plain paper bags for sale at various shops in the neighbourhood. Oae about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in dark tweed suit and black hard hat. The other about 2? yrs. of age, medium build, dark complexion and dark moustache ; dressed in dark mixture suit and black hard hat, each carried a parcel wrapped in black canvas". Stolen since 7th April last., from a gentleman's residence: — a dark green leather Jewel Case, lined with blue velvet, containing a pair of pendant pearl Eariiogs ; a pair of Side Combs for haii-, set with pearls ; a pearl Brooch, with pendant to match ; a pearl Bracelet, with gold clasp, clasp broken, the pearls all set in the form of sprays of flowers ; a cream- colour brocaded silk Tunic, trimmed with fringe, and Fichu to match. Supposed by a woman, a cook, supposed'native of Dublin, about 24 years of age, low stature, dark hair, blue eyes, wants gt'ront teeth in upper jaw, and speaks with a lisp and Irish accent; dresses showily. Information to Mr. Supt. Cumming, Borough Police Office, Dumbarton.— Bow- ttreet, July 10. Absconded from Burslcm on 7tli ultimo, charged with stealing 27s. 6d.:— WM. TURNER, cab- driver, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, slight light moustache, brown eyes, medium build ; dressed in black hard felt bat, and a black suit. Supposed to be employed in stables in Manchester or Stafford. Informa- tion to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 7. Stolen at Mickleby, near Whitby, between 5 p. m. on 3rd and 6 p. m. on 4th instant:— a white fustian double breasted Jacket, nearly new, has three small white bone buttons down each side, lined with very dark grey woollen lining, two pockets outside, man's size. By two men :— one is from 40 to 50 years of age, rather tall, dark hair turning grey, and dark whiskers afl round face ; dressed in dark pilot jacket, light coloured trousers and vest, and dark round hat; the other is about 30 years of age, rather tall, light hair, light ginger tuft on chin end ; dressed in a blue guernsey, mole- skin trousers, and dark cap ; they are tramps. Absconded from Rode Heath, Cheshire, on 3rd instant, charged with stealing £ 2 12s. from the cabin of a boat lying in the Trent and Mersey canal:-— a boatman,' who goes by the name of HARRY, about 20 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, fair complexion and light hair ; dressed in a moleskin jacket a piece burned out of one sleeve, blue cloth double- breasted vest, brown cord trousers, black cloth cap, blue ribbed stock- ings, and strong water- tight heavily nailed hoots. States he had an aunt living 3 miles from Newport, Salop. Infor- mation to Supt. Hindley, County Constabulary, Middlewich, Cheshire. — Baw st., July 7. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) Wanted for Rape, on Saturday 8th July, on a girl 13 years of age, at Napton, Rug' y :— a man, known at lodging houses as JOHNNY SMITfl, about 30 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, smart soldierly appearance, light hair tuft of sandy hair on chin; dressed in stitched cloth billy cock hat, lately washed, blue serge jacket, plaid trousers, and strong boots. Travels in company with a woman, about 30 years of age, dark complexion, stout build ; dressed ID small b'aefe hat with bunch of flowers in front, a blue and white knitted woollen scarf, black tight fitting jacket, light dress, with black velvet bands around skirt, wears a brooch in doors and out, with a photo of a soldier in it. They both hawk illuminated scripture texts pictures, pasted oa machine stamped brown and cream coloured paper- machie frames, and carry them in brown paper, generally takes a furnished room at a lodgkig house, and hawk in the neighbouring towns and villages call- ing at all houses and often at police stations. Charged with uttering three counterfeit Shillings, at Buralem, on 11th instant:— a man, about 29 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, swarthy complexion, stout build ; dressed in black hard felt hat, blue and white soarf, light- coloured jacket, cord trousers, and lace- up boots; and another about 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale complexion, slender build ; dressed in soft billycock hat, black jacket, cord trousers, and lace- up boots. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem.— Bow- street, July 14.
