Rlotlce.— It is requested that all communications for tho purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it i* desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that * n information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offenoe charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. A « no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all . Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and et Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for in » ertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should oontain no expressions holding out any eipeotation of reward for the return of the property, without llie apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, Sec., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Charged on warrant with inflicting grievous bodilf harm on Nicoda Locke, at Mitchell's Wood, near Talk- o'th- hill, on 29th ultimo:— BARTHOLOMEW GORMAN, 22 years of age, £ feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, sallow complexion, stout build, is an Irishman, of gipsy- like appearance, and a tinker: dressed in brown frock coat, old brown cord trousers and vest, red necktie, old dark brown hard hat, and lace- up boots with tips on heels. He is suppossd to be a member of the 3rd Stafford Militia. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Hall, Tunstell, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or to Sergeant Belfield, Kidsgrove.— Bow- street, June 2. Whereas on 16th instant, the dead body of a newly- born Male Child, was found in the Moat, near | Southsea Beach, wrapped in an old brown linsey petticoat, and a linen napkin ; and at the inquest on 19th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown,' was re- turned. Notice is hereby given, that £ 50 Reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person, other than a person belonging to a police force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or muiderers; and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Paidon to any accomplice, not being the percon who actually committed tho murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. The dead body of a newly- born female Child was found at a hedge bottom in Hope Road, Sale, wrapped in brown paper, tied round with string, made un in the form of a parcel. An inquest held on the body ou 19tli instaut, when a verdict of' Wilful Murder' was returned ' against some per- son or persons unknown.' Absconded, charged on wan- ant with uttering a forged acceptance of a Bill of Exchange for £ 03 7s. 9d. :— JOHN ADKINS JONES, about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 8 ins. higb, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, medium build, and of gentlemanly appearance; dresses in dark fashionable ^ clothes, light tie, and round hard hat ; he has been in business as an iron and tin plate merchant, at 49, Princess- street, Manchester, trading as Barrow, Davis & Co. ; he has in his possession cheque books of the Lancashire and York- shire Bank, Shude Hill, Manchester, and the Sheffield Branch » of the Birmingham, Dudley, and District Banking Company; he has bees in the habit of staying at first class hotels, and having hig letters addressed ' Barrow, Davis & Co., General t ost Office'; he has had letters so addressed to Manchester, atockport, Birmingham, and Bristol. By a woman, from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches higb, pale face, and dark hair ; dressed in black bonnet, black aud white striped shawl, aud white apron. Information to the County Police Office, Old Trafford.— Bou- street, May 31. Stolen from the person at Bottlesford, Wilts, on 24th instant: — a silver engine- turned double- bottom Hunting Watch, maker ' Walter Tucker, Exeter, No. 4696.' Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Pierce, Marlborough.— Bow- street, May 31. Charged with stealing a meerchaum Pipe, from the person at Oldbury, on 10th ultimo, ( pipe recovered) :— THOMAS BALL, alias CUTE, a native of Dudley, 27 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, light liair,. blue eyes, tattoo marks on left arm, is a labomer, walks erect, and has a soldierlike appearance, has been in the army. Tramps the country begging chiefly at public houses, and stays at common lodging houses. Information to Mr. Supt. Hard man, Police Station, Oldbury, Worcestershire, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, May 31. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from Folly Hall, Brierly, by means of burglary during the night of 21st ultimo :— a silver Geneva Watch, ' E. A. W ' engraved on case ; a silver Guaid, broken in the middle ai. d tied with cotton thread ; about 6s. in Silver and 4s. in Copper, by ARTHUR CHILD3, alias POAT CHILDS, a poacher, 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, whiskers and moustache, nose has been broken, and inclines a little to one side, splay footed, and has a stooping gait, by trade a collier ; dressed in a dirty light grey suit, and blaok billycock hat. And PITiLLIS PARKES, 38 years of age, 4 feet 10| inches high, face very much tanned, two moles on left cheek, brown hair, grey eyes; dressed in a dark brown dress, and black bonnet, she is a native of Worcestershire. Both were seen on 22nd ultimo, going in the direction of Wakefield. Information to the Superintendent, Barnsley.— Bow street, June 2. Stolen, by mtans of burglary, on 28tli instant, at Burstow, Surrey :— a cruet Stand; a tea Pot; a cieam Jug; 4 table Spoons ; 12 tea ditto ; a punch Ladle, with black horn handle ; soir eof the spoons have initials ' T. D. H.' ; 2 large gravy Spoons, initials ' H. A.', all silver ; two decanter Stands, plated; a small Timepiece, 14 inches high, brass facing, mixed with red; a weather Glass, sarved frame, maker supposed ' Negretti'; a table Cover, amber and black, spotted with ink ; a small tin cash Box, containing £ 10 or £ 12 in Gold, a Cheque for £ 29, and a Cheque for £ 11, payable at Reigate and Horsham Banks. Stolen [ by means of housebreaking at Stramshall, near Uttoxeter, on 24th instant:— an old fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 211, maker's name ' James Hart well, Burton- on- Trent.' Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Leek, or Sergeant Harding, Cheadle, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 31. Stolen from a beer- house at Sheffield, during the night of 19th or the morning of 20th instant, by means of burglary :— a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, 6 size, toe capped, only once worn ; 2 electro- plated Salts, egg- cup shape, acorn pattern ; a silver Salt Spoon, shovel pattern, fancy engraved ; a Ditto, spade pattern, open handle and ivy leaves engraved thereon ; 2 silver Gravy Spoons ; a silver Nut Crack, beaded pattern ; a silver butter Knife, without handle ; 2 large Jam Spoons, one fancy pattern and the other ivy leaf ; a box of Cigars, branded ' Trabucos'. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a stable in Edge Lane, West Derby, between 7.30 p. m., 25th, and 7 a. m., 26th instant:— a bright bay car- riage Gelding, about 5 or 6 years old, about 1C hands high, black mane, tail, and points; newly shod. £ 20 reward will be paid by Hugh Cullen, Esq , St. Joseph's Mouut, West Derby, to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the thief or thieves and the recovery of the Horse. Information to the Superintendent, County Police Office, Old Swan, near Liverpool.— Bow- street, May 31. Stolen from a field at Hadley End, Yoxill, during the night of 27th instant: — a dark brown cob Horse, 15 haudB high, about 10 years of age, has a small head, a bare place on each knee, and slight collar mark on near shoulder, a small swelling on the outside of near hind leg, just below the hock, tail has been docked, but is of fair length. Information to Mr. Superintendent Gilbride, Burton- on- Trent. or to Serjeant Harrison, Barton- under- Needwood, Staffordshire.— Bow- s'., May 31. The 3 men advertised in Police Gazette on 19th instant, cliaiged with stealing a Pony, Cart, and Harness from Red- bourn, on 16th instant, have been apprehended, and are remanded until 3rd proximo, the property is recovered. In- formation to Inspector Wm. Humrnerstone, Police Station, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, May 31. Charged on warrant with stealing a Pony and Trap at Loughborough, on 17th instant, ( recovered): J. CRANSTON junr., a commercial traveller, about 35 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 niches high, grey eyes, dark hair, thick beard and moustache, inclined to be sandy, fresh complexion, stout built, and has a commanding manner ; dressed in black frock coat, dark trousers, aud vest, top hat, stand up collar, with peaked corners, and lar^ e tie. Absconded from Leek on 17th instant, charged with stealing a Cow ( since recovered) :— a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, no whiskers or moustache, slender build, single, a farm servant, and a native of Leek, Staffordshire. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT The thief described in Police Gazette of 22nd ultimo, a3 having stolen 2 overcoats from au Hotel in this Boro' on 19th ultimo, has been arrested, and the property recovered. — Bow- street, June 2. Wanted at Warrington for stealing, on 29th ultimo, four Parcels, containing one black suit made up, the other to make up ( consisting of 2| yards black Worsted Stuff and 2i yards light check Tweed) ; 34 yards blue Flannel, 41 yards grey ditto, aud 12 yards plain grey Calico :— THOMAS SOUTHERN, a journeyman tailor, about 40 years of a$ e, 5 feet 2 inches high, stiff build, right leg a wooden ore. In- formation to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington.— Bow- street, May 31. Wanted ou a warrant for larceny at Fareham, on 21th instant:- FREDERICK BOWERS, alias DEACON, a gipsy, 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, black hair, hazel e'" es, dark complexion, 2 moles on right breast, 1 on left breast; dressed in light cord trousers, light jacket and waistcoat, hard felt hat, accompanied by a woman aud child, had a small white pony aud cart, and a tent, and keeps a savage black dog. He is well known in the south of England. Information to Mr. Supt. Kiushott, Hants Constabulary, Farehim.— Bow street, May 31. Wanted for stealing a silver Watcli ( recovered) :— a mar, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark com- plexion, no whiskers, black moustache and hair, scar left cheek ; dressed in light jacket with velvet collar, grey treu- sers, hard felt hat, belongs to the Carnarvon Militia, No. 715, which will be found either on his shirt, boots or Bocks ; has worked at Ham- wist, Shrewsbury, Chester, Birkenhead, and Liverpool ( 26, Russell Place), is accompanied Jay one Wood, also a Militiaman, no whiskers or moustache, about 5 ft. 4 ins, high, dressed in black jacket, and moleskin trousers. Infor- mation to the Chief Constable's Office, Carnarvon.— Bow- street, May 31. Charged with stealing lis. on 22ud instant : a woman of loose character, known as BURNLEY HARRIETT, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches higb, fresh complexion, rather stout build and full face, light brown hair turning grey, scald maik on right cheek ; dressed in black velvet jacket, clogs, and grey striped shawl over her head, she fre- quents Burnley, Blackburn, Accrington, Shawforth, Bury and Heywood. Information to Mr. Supt. Henderson, County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bmc- strset, May 31. Wanted on a warrant for larceny by a servant:— EDWARD LAMB, a clerk, late of 54, Foster Road, Junction Road, Kentish Town, 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, hair, and moustache, blue eyes, walks up- right ; dressed, when last seen, in dark frock coat, grey mix- ture trousers, side- spring boots, aud low crowned hat. Stolen on 13th instant, Three Pounds in Silver Monev. By a servant, named MARY GRAIIAM, about 19 years i f age, about 5 feet higb, fresh complexion, very dark brown hair, scald marks on arms and hands, on forehead, and a little oi> nose ; dressed, when ? he left Bolton, in a white straw hat, trimmed with a yellow feather and cream- coloured ribbon, very dark green Ulster and plain morocco boots with elastic sides. She has worked on the Coalpit- trow, also at a brewery, near Wigan, where she was scalded 6 years ago ; she has also of late been employed as domestic servant at public- houses. Stolen at Ledbury :— a blue and white striped cotton Shirt ; a blue and white check Handkerchief ; a red and black spotted Mulfler ; and a pair of white cotton Stockings. By a man - vho lodged in the inn, and absconded at 3 a. m. on 21si instant, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, dark hair, moustache aud complexion, slightly pock- marked ; dressed in dark coat, cotton cord trousers, billycock hat, a labourer, married, wife living in Tewkesbury. Supposed to belong to the Army Reservs, and has ; n his possession a soldier's discharge. He is accompanied by a very tall woman named Thornett, a hawker, ana - they stay at common lodging- houses. Wanted under two warrants f< v obtaining Food, Lodg- ings, and Money by means of false pretences at Talgarth,' B- econshire, on 15th instant : • a irinr, between € 0 and 70 years of age, 5 feet 1C inches high, fair complexion, white hair ard whiskers, shaved under chin ; dressed in a black frock coat, vest and trousers, black silk hat, lace- up boots, and wore a shawl across his should'rs. And a woman, 51 veara of age, looI; 3 much younger, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion, black Lair ( supposed dyed) ; dressed m black, wore a black veil, and carried a black leather satchel bag in her hand. They represented that they were related to respectable farmers in the neighbourhood, getting the Money, Food and Lodgings, owing to their respectable appearance; Supposed to bd" the same persons convicted at ' Stafford Michaelmas Quarter Sessions 1878, Hereford Assizes 1874, and Welshpool Quarter Sessions 187.8, for similar offences in the name of JOSEPH LANE, alias JOSEPH HENRY WILLIAMS WALKER, alias JOSEPH JENKINS. Prison at Sheptou Mallet, until Gtli instant charged with attempting to pick pockets at Biuegar Fair, on 3lst ultimo :— CFIABLE3 CLIFTON, 42 years of age, 5 f, et 2 inches high, sstUow complexion, dark. brown hair, brown moustache, small whiskers at the side of liis face, shaves the chio, suuken cheeks, grey eyes, and slight build, cut over the lsft , corner of the left eye, several cuts on the fingers, and marks of abceases all over the breast, and has had the great toe of the light foot injured v. Lieh causes him to turn his right toes inward when walking ; dressed its small black ribbed coat and vest, brown check trousers, and brown stiff bowler hat, he carried a pair of horseshoe spectacles, with coloured glasses, also had a French passport in the name of Charles Clifton, dated 27th January, 1882. Ho states that he is an Englishman, but his present home is in Pans.
