POLICE GAZETTE. fcg autfjoritg. --- CONTAINING The substance of all Information received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, repVM Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged tHU Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Thi Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It ia requested that all communications for tho purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to tho Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tfae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of ihe " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas, on the night of 1st Decemoer, 1881 :— LUCY SANDS, was Murdered near Workington, Cumberland. And whereas a verdict of Wilful Murder has been returned by the Coroner's Jury, against some person or persons unknown. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government, to any person ( other thau the person belonging to a police force, in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the discovery and conviction af the murderer or murderers; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the graat of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to Mr. Supt. Bird, County Constabulary Office, Whitehaven, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow street, May 1. FORGERY. Description of HENRY BORTON MAY, late of Aat- wick, near Brackley, charged on warrant with Forgery, where- by he obtained £ 30 from the Brackley Branch of the Bucks and Oion BankiDg Company, on 9th instant, he received iu part payment four £ 5 Notes on the same Bank, numbered respectively 29555, 29990, 29723, 29053. He ia also suspected of stealing the following blank Cheques, from a cheque book on above Bank, numbered respectively, 513375,513378,513381, 513384, 513385, 513390, 513392, 513393, 513391, 513396, 513399, the property of Mr. John Lord, of Astwick, with whom he was staying at the date of the forgery, he is well known in London, more particularly in Cheapside, Hackney, Peckhatn Rye, Gordon Square, Fassett Square, and Gieenwood Sow, Dalston, also in Oxford :— he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout, fresh complexion, the end of his nose is frost bitten, he having been in Canada, dark hair, and dark whiskers and moustache, dark eyes, and very dark eyebrows ; dressed when last seen in black curly cloth overcoat, with braid across the front, brown jacket, and dark trousers, and brown felt hat, of gentlemanly appearance, very fond of smoking, has been in America, and frequently speaks of having been abroad, and of having plenty of money. Information to Mr. Supt. D. Norman, Police Office, Towcester, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and from whom a photograph can be seen on application.— Bow street, April 28. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on 20th ultimo :— a gold lever bunting Watch, No. 2/ 39, with polished case, centr^ seconds, maker— Owen Owen, South Castle Street, Liverpool; had attached a gold hollow pattern Chain, with a sea Bean and Masonic Pendant, Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Shrewsbury.— Bcw- strest, May 3, Stolen from the person at Windsor, on 27th ultimo ;— a gentleman's open- faced gold English lever Watch, 18 carat case, plain white dial - vith seconds, maker's name Alfred Garland, 47, Lord Street, Liverpool, No. 5633, nearly new ; also a go'd Chain, curb pattern, 9 carat, anchor mark, with a small aluminium Pencil attached. Supposed by a woman, medium size and build, rather shabbily dressed. Also a gentleman's open face gold English lever Watch, with crest and monogram, splayed eagle, white dial with seconds, maker's name Brancher and Sydenham, Beading. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen fiom the person at Wye Steeplechases, on 15th ultimo :— a gold levor half- hunting Watch, No. 37074, maker Dent, LoLdon, large monogram ' B. C. A. F.' on back. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Noakes, Police Office, Ashford, Kent.— Bow- street, May 1. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Snodland, be'ween 10 p m., 22nd, and 8 a. m , on 23rd ult. :— 3 calico Shtets and 1 twill ditto ( recovered) ; 1 old white Shirt, marked ' E. M.' in ink ; 1 blue check Shirt, 1 woman's Nightdress, 2 white Bodices ; 2 pairs of woman's white cotton Stockings, marked on top with red cotton ; 3 chemises, 3 pairs woman's Drawers, and one old white Bag. Supposed by a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, ginger whiskers and moustache, right eye rather fuller thau the left; dressed in cord trousers, patch on oue knee, drab slop jacket, blue shirt with white stripes, and hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Hulse, Police Station, W. Mailing, Ktnt.— Bow- St., May 5. Stolen by means of Warehouse breaking, between 29th ultimo and 1st instaut a piece of black Satin, 84 yards long and 22 inches wide ; a piece of black flowered Silk, 69J yards long, 214 inches wide; and a piece of black flowered Silk, 72i yards long, and 21 Jr inches wide. Information to Chief Inspector Nortcliff, Detective Department, Leeds.— B. w- slreet, May 5. During the night of 1st instant, the church of St. Mary's, Selby Oak, North field, was feloniously broken and entered, and stolen therein :— a pair ( gilt) flower Vases ; a black stuff Cassock, been repaired near bottom ; an Oxford M. A. Hood ; an 8- day spring Clock, iu plain oak circular rim case, white dial plate ' H. Palmer,' written thereon. Ii. formation to Mr. Supt. Tyler, Police Office, King's Heath.— Bow- street, May 5. Stolen by means of housebreaking between 17ch ultimo, and 1st instant, at Slough, Bucks:- a lady's satin hubbard Cloak, with fringe rouud bottom with beads, fitting a tall lady ; a lady's 1 i- ose silk velvet Jacket, lined with thin satin, with the name of ' Holbrook and Hall, Reading,' on the collar; a black cloth lady's Jacket, with fur round the bottom, value together £ 14. Supposed by two men, between 25 and 30 years of age, one of whom was hawking combs, and the other religious cards ; the Daily Chronicle newspaper of Thursday, April 27th, 1882, was left in the bedroom. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen on 26th ultimo, from an hotel in Bolton :— agent's single breasted blue- black tine ribbed worsted cloth Overcoat, short cut, fly front, bound with braid, lined with black Italian cloth, four pr. ckets outside and one inside, worsted covered buttons, in one of the pockets there were a white Handker- chief, marked ' S. B.' or ' S. Bi ierley,' and alight brown leather Pocket Book, papered inside, containing a few postage stamps a jd letters ; a brown silk Umbrella, with cane handle carved nob, representing root and two leaves ; three Overcoats, which have since been found pledged in Manchester, in the pockets of which there were a tobacco Pouch, a wood Pipp, and a morocco leather Case, marked ' Ebensezer Green H » rwood, St. George's Lodge, No. 1723,' containing a masonic Apron, marked under flap ' E. G. Harwood, St. George's Lodge, Bolton,' and date of offi: e ; a white silk Handkerchief, with flowered border ; three pairs of kid Gloves ( two white and one brown), a brown leather Cigar Case, mounted with ebonized silver, painted flowers inside, a silver mounted briar root Pipe and Case, a Seal and an otter skin tobacco Pouch, a brown leather Case, lettered ' Bro. O. C. Crompton, St. John's Lodge,' containing a masonic Apron, lettered under flap ' O. C > ompton,' an oblong brown leather Case, containing a masonic jewel Star, with three bars attached to a'blue ribbon, and a gent's blue and white silk Handkerchief. By a man, about 30 years of age, rather tall and slender, heavy sandy moustache, no whiskers or beard, light complexion, large Roman nose, had a small white plaster on the bridge of nose, which he pulled off and left behind ; dressed in a red mixture suit a long brown check cloth ulster and black billycock hat. He carried a square top black glazed bag. Had lodged in the hotel two days, and left without paying his bill. Is believed he is the same man who committed a similar robbery at the hotel on 10th January, 1881. Also stolen on 26th ultimo :— 4 Half- sovereigns, by a woman who lodged in the bouse two nights, and said she came from Baxenden, near Accrington, about 40 or 50 years of age, £ ft. 2 or 3 inches high, brown hair, pale complexion, and blue eyes ; dressed iu a paisley shawl, black jacket, green skirt, black satin bonnet trimmed with a flower. Also stolen on 18th ultimo :— a tailor's Square ; a Straight- Edge, and a Walking Stick ( recovered). By au Irish tailor, 44 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, long face, sharp nose, large forehead, brown hair brushed up in front, but not parted, long sandy whiskers and moustache, and walks very erect; dressed in a dark mixture morniog coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, black billycock hat, and elastic side boots. Will seek work at first- class shops, as a coat maker. Information to Mr. John Holgate, Chief Constable, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 6. Absconded on 27th ultimo, charged on warrant with embezzlement :— FRANK EDWARD HITCH, commercial traveller, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, whiskers and moustache iuclined to be sandy ; dressed in dark cKthes and round hard felt hat. Has friends living at Ware in Hertford- shire. Information to Mr. Jackson, Chief Constable, Central Police Office, Sheffield.— Bow- street, May 5. Stolen during the night of 25th ultimo :— 7 mason's Hammers, some of them marked 1 T. D.' and ' Astley & Son3,' Blackburn, and about 70 mason's Chisels, marked with a device and anchor, by JOHN WILLIAM BRAMLEV, a labourer, native of Blackburn, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 itches high , brown hair, long face, fresh complexion, burn mark under left eye, first right finger deformed ; dressed iu a black hard bi'lyeork hat, brown mixture loose jacket and vest, dirty fustian cord trousers and shoes. A convicted thief, known at Chorley. Has resided in most of the Lancashire towns. Travelled with shooting galleries. Has also worked at cottage houses doing repairs, such as paving back yards, re- setting ovens and boilers, & c. Information to James Jervis, Chief Constable, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- strset, May 5. Stolen from Brentwood, on 2nd instant:— a very old- fashioned silver Watch, ' Qreenhow, Chelmsford,' on inside, no large hand. By a lodger, about 30 years of age, 6 ft. 8 ins. high, light hair, fair complexion, freckled face, few ginger whiskers ; dressed in black hard felt hat, blue pilot jacket, black cloth trousers and vest, and a watch and clock cleaner. Information to Mr. Supt. Dobson, Brentwood, Essex.— Bow- street May 5. Stolen from Beattock, near Moffat, on 30th ultimo :— a mason's wooden Mallet, not much worn ; a mason's wooden Mallet, much worn ; a mason's Chisel, about 6 inches long, stamped, and nearly 2 lb. in weight. Supposed by PATRICK DEVINE, mason, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, stout made ; dressed in suit of dark tweed clothes, dark twead cap, cai ried a suit of old tweed clothes, and some mason's tools with hirn ; and THOMAS BRODIE, mason, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, fair or reddish hair and moustache, no whiskers, ordinary make ; dressed in old grey or brown tweed coat, dirty moleskin trousers, with pair of dark tweed troupers underneath them, and carripd some mason's tools. Informa- tion to John Jones, C. C., County Buildings, Dumfries.— Bow- s'. ree', May 5. The woman advertised in Police Gazette of 28th ultimo, as being wanted for stealing Bedding, wearing Apparel, &.;., at Haiborne, his been apprehended and the property recovered. — Sow- street, May 5. Absconded charged on warrant with embezzlement: — JOHN GILES, of Gloucester, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, rather corpulent, fresh com- plexion, blue eyes, full round face, light brown hair and moustache, small whiskers, which maybe shaved off; sup- posed dressed in a suit of black ribbed cloth, or dark brown suit, and small bowler hat. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension..— Bow s'reet, May 3. Stolen on 26lh ultimo, at Ledbury :— a man's old dark grey Jacket, blue cotton Shirt, white stripe, a pocket Hand- kerchief, red, black and yellow, 2s. 61. in Pence, and a money Box, imitation hou-, e. By a lodger, a navvy, about 50 year* of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, dark com- plexion, clean shaved, bald on top of head; dressed in fuf cap, dark coat, cord trousers, and wearing clogs. Information to Mr. Supt. Smith, Police Station, Ledbury, Herefordshire. Bow- street, May 3. Stolen from the Oflicer's Quarters, Milton Barracks, Gravesend, on 27th ultimo •— two £ 10 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 38 K. 82022 and 82023 ; a gold signet Riug. with Crest- a Pelican, and words ' NIHIL A MANTI DURUM' round same ; a set of plain gold Studs, flat tops ; a set of coral Studs ; and gold sleeve Links. By an officer's servant, 19 years age, 5 feet 5 inches higb, fresh complexion, good looking, brown hair, slight moustache, hazel eyes, native of new Hen top, Peterboro ; dressed in bluish grey tail coat, vest same material, grey trousers, military boots, and round black hat. Information to Chief Constable George Berry, Town Hall, Graveserd, Kent.— Bow- street, May 3, Stolen at Whitby, about 9 a. m. on 29th ultimo :— a silver Watch ;; a gentleman's gold Albert, with Locket attached, ( recovered pledged.) also a gold scarf Pin, with stone set in it; a jet scarf Pin, with ladies head ; a gentleman's jet Albert '; a jet Locket, with cameo— Italian Boy ; a fossil Brooch and Studs to match— Headless Snakes; a jet Brooch ; and 3 6) purs of jet Eardrops ; a long silver watch Guard, with Key and other Trinkets attached ; also a jet cigar holder. By a man who gave the name of FREDERICK ANDERSON, who lodged at the house two nights, and stated he w; i3 col- lecting information for Kelly and Co,, London, for f. North Ridine Directory, ( supposed false) he is about 25 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, and light brown moustache, large no3e ; dressed in a light overcoat, with light velvet collar, supposed grey trousers, and black low round hat, of gentlemanly appearance, and good address. Came from Scarbro, on 26th ultimo by road, stating he had sent IKS luggage by rail, and was making for Middles- borough, Darlington, and Newcastle. Information to Mr. Supt. Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Wnitby, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- sireel, May 3. Absconded on 8lh ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 400 in Gold :— GEORGE TURNER SPENCER, bank clerk, late of 46, Lordship- road, Stoke Newington, 26 years of age, 5 feetC inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, well built; accompanied by a female, supposed his wife, 26 years of age, daik hair, pale complexion, medium height. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, May 3. Absconded on 17th ultimo, from Peterborough, charged with embezzling .£ 2,000, the moneys of the Peterborough Corporation :— CHAS. WM. RINTOUL, late Rate Collector, about 35 years of age, feet 7 inches high, black hair, had, when he left, black moustache and beard, rather large black eyes, dark complexion, inclined to sallow, square, but rather slenderly built, about 10 stone, and walks with springy step. May emigrate with a female. Information to James Hurst, Head Constable, Police Station, Peterborough, who holds a warrant to anest.— Bow- st., May 1. Stolen from a bedroom at 37, Stonefield Rnad, Hasting?, on 26th ultimo:— an old fashioned silver pair- case verge Watch, maker supposed Job, Hastings, a long guard silver Chain and Pencil attached. By a young man about 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, full f ice; dressed in dark overcoat, blue cloth trouseii, low shoes, and black hard felt hat. Stated he had been in a booking office, and came from Dover on 17th ult. ; left behind at his lodgings a book of ' Rules of the Dover and East Kent Pormanr- nt Benefit Building Society.' Information to Mr. W. M. Gk- nfeter, Chief Supt., Central Police Office, Hastings.— Bow- atreet, May 1. Stolen from a jewellers shop at Stratford- on- Avon on 25th ultimo :— a lady's gold diamond Ring, pear shaped, diamond in centre, clustei of pearls on each side, two pearls irissing. By two men, one about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, little or no whiskers or beard, pale face ; dressed in dark clothes, and tall box bat; the other about 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, and deer stalker hat. YV anted at South Stockton, chargcd on warrant With stealing 8 pairs of Boots, ( recovered) : — BENNATON C11ASTNEY, alias FRANK BENNINGTON, 30 years of age. about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark bro wn hair, whiskers and moustache, dark complexion, a bootmaker, and generally seeks employment in a large shop, has a brother named Chastney, who keeps a large shoe shop [ in London, is of good address, and a great boaster ; dressed in a dark suit, getting shabby, blue tie, laced up boots, and black billy cock hat. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, May 1. Absconded from Salford, charged on warrant with steal- ing £ 30, on 24th instant:— THOMAS SEFl'ON, a carter, 33 yeara of age, 5 feet 10i inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes, scar on back of left hand, and active appearance ; has served in the Liverpool Police Force, and in the Burnley and Barrow- in- Furness Divisions of Lancashire Police. Information to the Detectivo Department, Salford. — Boa- street, April 28. Charged on warrant with embezzlement: — JAMES DAVIS, 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, square shoulders, has been in the army, fresh complexion, high forehead, light brown hair turning grey and bald on temples, usually wears dundreary whiskers ; a clerk, has relations residing at 59, Gooding's- road, New Cattle Market, Lyndon. £ 10 reward will be paid by John Taylor, pointer, 152, Broad- street, Birmingham, for such i; formation as shall lead to his apprehension. Information to Mr. Supt. Rob'nson, Detective Office, Birmingham.— Bow- sf., April 28. Absconded from High Wycombe, charged on a warrant with stealing about £ 30 in Gold :— JOSEPH REEVES, a militiaman, a native of Woburn, Bucks, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown eyes, and dark brown hair, is a labourer ; dressed in regi mentals, but will probably replace tliera by purchasing civilian clothing. Information to Mr. Supt. Collins, Borough Police, High Wycombe, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 26. JAME3 H. WORTHY, described in Poliee Gazette 14th instant ai a license holder, Reg. No. Y 548, has a small scar over second joint right finger, 5 vaccination marks on right ar; n, dimple chin, 3 small white scars left side of neck, 2 small scj. r3 on right breast, one on left bzeast inside and above nipple, a smaller one below lower loft rib3, scar above right groin, acd above left groin, several whitish scars over shoulders, small brown scar on left shin, veins slightly vari- cose ( especially right leg), and left pupil widely diluted. Was convicted at the Central Criminal Court on 29th Feb, 1864, for embezzlement; also on 25th October, 1869, for forgery, and sentenced to 14 yeara penal servitude and 7 years police supervision. Information to Inspector McWiliiam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 23, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, April 28. Stolen about 18th instant:— a scarf Pin, round enamel • with pearls; a gold Wheebarrow with nuggets ; a gold Spade Pin with nugget; a gold Pin with hair drop ; Sluds, gold and light blue enamal; a gold and dark coral serpent; a gold light coral roses ; 2 tortoise and gold filigree ware ; 3 onyx set in gold rope pin. Buttons, about half a dozen gold and coral serpent settings ; 4 gold, sewn with gold thread ; gold coins on a gold ring. Lockets', gold ( qy.) gilt, with a horseshoe on one side and portrait of a little girl inside; 1 gold chased oval with portrait of a boy inside. Albert, heavy gold with bar in centre, and a ball shaped like a bomb shell with a photo and hair inside, recovered, also a black cloth overooat, which has been turned, purple liniDg and plain collar. By JOBN CUMMINS, 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches h'gh, fair complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, P O L I C E GAZETTE,. heavy moustache ( which may now be shaved off), large scar on upper lip, soldier like appearance, has . been a gunner in the Royal Artillery, has bought his discharge which he is supposed to have with him ; dressed in soft billycock hat, dark suit, two white shirts, one marked ' G. H. B. Reed,' a white woollen scarf, low lace- up shoes, and ( supposed) the stolen overcoat. Supposed that his mother resides at 8, Stan- bury street, Old Ford, London. Information to Mr. Supt. A. T.
