Notice.— It U requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offender*, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all application* in referent* to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ths Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it i* desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it i* indispensably necessary that an information ibould be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an at tested copy thereof, together with ths advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. A* no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor oniut be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. Tho Name* and Description* of Doserters from the Army, and Of Absentees and Doserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offie* Forma 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for Insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must * tate clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signod by t'ae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of roward for tho return of the property, without Vhe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to Insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to reccive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary, INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 2nd iastant, the dead Body of THOS. PYLE, of Ushaw Moor, platelayer, was found between Red Hill- terrace and Crossgate Moor, near Durham. At tho inquest the juiy returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' A reward of XI00 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government, and a further leward cf ill00 will be paid by H. Chaytor, Esq., Witton Castle, to any piraon ( other than a, person belongiDg to the Police Force in the United Kingdom), who shall give such information and evi- dence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer oi murderers ; and the Secretary of State will ad vise tho grant of Htr Majesty's gracious paulon to any acconi plice, not being the person who actually committed the murt'er, who shall give such evidence aB shall lead to a like result. Stolen from the person at Gateacre Railway Station, on 19th instant: — a gold lever hunting Wateh, No. G5961, chrono- meter balance, maker ' Roskell,' inscription engraved inside of ease, ' Presented to Gerhard Bringemann, as a token of friend- ship ard regard, by Frederick Huth, and Co., Liverpool, 30th September, 1870.' Stolen from the person at tho Croxteth Hunt Steeple Chase, Gateacre, on 19th instant:— a gold lever Watch, No. 66101, white dial, slightly cracked, gold hands ; a gold Chain, bars and rings, with a short drop, to which is attached an ornamen- tal watch Key, with a fox on each side; a gold lever hunting Watch, engine turned cases, maker ' Harrison, Liverpool,' erCBt haid with dagger on caao ; a s'iver lever Watch, has Henry Clayton, Olive Mount, Wavertree' engraved on dome; a Silver Geneva Wat-' b, snap back, metal dome, metal edges to tho case, ono of the following numbers scratched inside case, 67200, 12735, or 28047, white seconds dial, with steel bauds. Stolen from tho person on Lichfield Race Course, on 14th instant:— a white ivory Purse, which contained Four or Five Pounds. The Purse has the name of ' Miss Logan' engraved thereon in gold lettera Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen from the person on Lichfield Race Course, on 13th instant:— a silver Lever Watch, No. 1016 or 10116. maker ' J. Robinson, Chichester,' with a 12- caratTgold Albert Chain, cable- pattern, and a small gold Key ( slightly bent) tied on with thread, and gold Seal with three stones ( one white, one pink, the other green) attached. Also at same place and date a silver ditto, with gold Albert Chain ( very much worn) and barrel Key attached. Information to Mr. Supt. Gilbride, Burton- on- Trent, or to Sergeant Pearson, Police Station, Whittington, Staf- fordshire.— Bene street, April 17. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 20th instant:— a Cash Box, about 10 x 8 inches, painted black and gold, con- taining a massive gold blue enamelled Bracelet, consisting of about ten mother of pearl medallions, each about the size of a shilling, engraved with beads, between each is a bar, bearing a gold fir cone, a piece is broken oil' one of the medallions, fastens with a clasp ; a Brooch to match, with a spiing under the pin ; three Seals, viz. :— one red cornelian, one white cornelian, crest— a spread eagle, one bloodstone sea', also engraved with a fpread eagle, with motto in Indian characters ; a malachite and silver Bracelet, buckle and chain pattern ; Cheque Book, oil Grindley's Bank, with seven forms removed; a Will on Parchment, dated June, 1870, signed M. J. Brooke; several Accounts, Letters, and Store Tickets, all bearing the name of ' Mrs. Pettle'; several German and other silver Coins, having holes through them. Information to Chief Supt. Stolen by means of housebreaking during the absence of the family, between 12 noon and 9.30 p. m. on 18th instant :— about £\ 8 in Gold, and a silver Consular verge Watch, No. 7705, with steel Chain attached ; and a snake pattern imita- tion gold curb Chain with Locket ant', a Rhyl Stone, with views of Rhyl and Portrait of Edward Wilding attached, value £ I 10s. Stolen by meaui of housebreaking, at Bridgnorth, on 18th instant:— a leather Purse, containing three £ o Bank of England Notes, and dated ' Birmingham, May 16th, 1881,' Nos. 01 E 61048, 01 E 74533, 01 E 74578 ; a Sovereign, a Half- Crown, and Is. 0d. ; a gold lever Watch and Chain with ' Harriett Weaver' engraved on the works ; an embossed silver quart Tankard ; an embossed silver Waiter; a plain silver sugar Basin, hdmet shape, or oval, ami marked ' S'; two silver Brooches, one round and one shape of a knot; three silver sleeve Links ; a dessert Spoon— cr< vt a lion, and marked ' W'; an old Table Spoon, marked ' J. H.'; a small round silver cream Jug ; and Sugar Tongs. Information to Head Constable Cole, Bridgenorth.— Bow- street, April 21. On morning of 10th instant, between 12 15 and 6 o'clock, the booking office at the Uxbridge- road Station was entered, a cupboard door ( in which was an iron safe fixed) broken open, the said safe opened with a false key, and Cash stolen therefrom. A leather Cash Bag with brass label and padlock, belonging to the L. and N. W. Railway, was also stolen. £ 25 reward will be paid for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of tho offender or offenders. Information to Mr. W. T. Mason, Special Police Department, G. W. R, 6. Eastbourne- terrace, Paddington ; or to Mr. Supt. Copping, Detective Department, L. & N. W. R., Euston Station, either of whom will guarantee the reward being paid.— Boic- street, April 19. Stolen by means of burglary, on 14th instant, from Weston, near Bath : — a Teapot; a cream Jug, both stamped on the bottom ' J. K. &. Co.— 1860'; a straight pint Cup; two half- piut Ditto ; and an English Concertina, in rosewood case, maker Wheatstone. Tho two half- pint Cups have ' John Webb, won at Batheaston' scratched on the bottoms. Information to Mr. Supt. Morgan, Weston, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, April 17. EDWARD WALL, wanted for Burglary at Pollardine, Salop, on 1st February, 1881, and adveitised in Police Gazette 2nd August, and 12th December, 1881, has been apprehended, and is remanded till the 22nd instant. The stolen property has not been recovered, for description of the property stolen see Police Gazette of 7th February, 1881. Information to Mr. Snpt. Edwards, County Constabulary, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.— Bow- strett, April 17. Stolen by means of housebreaking on 10th instant, from Wall Bank, near Leek :— a lady's silver Geneva Watch, No. 42632; a small gold Brooch ; a pair of imitation gold Ear- drops, and about £ 3 10s. in Gold and Silver. Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Leek, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, , April 17. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Failed to surrender to his bail at the General Quarter Sessions at Worcester, on 3rd instant, he being charged with stealing a Horse at Halesowen, on 3rd February last:— GEORGE COX, alias SMASH, 41 years of age, 4 feet 11 inches high, freah complexion, sandy hair, no whiskers; dressed when last seen in dirty brown coat, moleskin trousers old soft hat ( cloth ) and wore clog*, is a native of Stourbrid and frequents Birmingham Marke', and may be found dri cattle from there. Information to Mr. Supt. Hardm9. il, ( ma bury, Worcestershire, or to Sergeant Raybould, Police Station, Halesowen, who holds a warrant for hii apprehension.— Boic- streit, April 21. Charged with stealing a Pony and J at Aldeburgh on 3rd instant:- WILLIAM HENRY BETTS, advertised in Police Gazette on 31st ultimo, as having stolen a Horse and Cart at Lewisham on 24th, is apprehended and committed for the next assizes at Ipswich. Information to Supt. Wm. Balls, Framlingham, or P. O. Wm. Hammond, Aldeburgh. — Bow- street, April 21. Absconded from Freemantle, Hants, on 3rd instant, charged with stealing a mare Pony ( since recovered):— a man, about 18 or 20 years < f age, 6 feet 3 or 4 inches high, brown hair, and fair complexion ; dressed in tight- fitting cord trousers and . vest, brown mixture tweed jacket, and black hard bowler hat; a stable keeper, native ot Petworth, Sussex, an associate of horse copers. Was at Petworth on 16th instant, and ij now supposed to be in the neighbourhood of Brighton. Information to Mr. Supt. Mintram, Hunts Constabulary, Bitteroe, Southampton.— Bnir- street, April 21. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Absconded from Brecon on 14th instant, charged on warrant with embezzlement:— JOHN MORGAN, post- r-" fster of Brecon, from 46 to 48 yea A of ag<\ about 5 feet S inches high, medium built, pale complexion, dark brown hair, slight dark brown whiskers, beard and moustache, dark bazel eyep, has a broken tooth in front of upper jaw, walks erect; dressed in a double breasted blue ribbwVieth jacket and vest, pepper and salt coloured waterproof overcoat, grey striped trousers, black hard felt hat, and elastic bide boots. Is fond of boasting when in drink, and very free with his money. He has a son ( supposed) employed as a telegraph clerk in Gloucester, and his wife has friends in Oxford and London. It is supposed he will endeavour to go abroad. Information to Mr. Supt. James Watkins, Borough Police Station, Brecon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Biio- street, April 24. Charged at Wednesfield on warrant with stealing £ Z 0s 6d. in Gold and Coppers, on 17th instant:- JOHN ROBINSON alias BUCK, about 18 or 10 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light brown hair, light complexion, small light whiskers on each side of face, proportionate build, supposed to have a lump on left shoulder, a night latch maker, and a native of Wednesfield; dressed in a blue pilot jacket, brown moleskin trousers, black hard billycock hat and strong lace- np boots. Information to Chief Supt, Longden, Bilston, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, April 24. Stolen at Worldham, Hants, between 0 p. m., 3lst ultimo, and 5 a. m., 1st instant:— a pair of horse Ribbons, two side Reins, four Topknots, and a Front- piece to bridle ( recovered). By a man, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium build, and dressed in dark coat, white cotton jacket underneath, cord trousers, lace- up boots, and soft felt hat; states he is a native of Appleshaw, near Andovcr, Hants. Absconded from Uppingham, on 14th instant, charged on Warrant with stealing Three Bank of England £ 5 Notes : - GEO. ROBT. CLARKE, solicitor's clerk, 17 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair, hazel eye?, dark complexion, and large full round face ; dressed in dark brown tweed cloth jacket and trousers, the latter mended with a patch inside both knees with same material, dark tweed cloth vest, hard black billy bat, and half boots. The Notes were exchanged for gold before lis absconded. Infor mation to the Chief Constable of Rutland, Oakham, or to Mr. Supt. Murfitt, Uppingham, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 24. Wanted on a warrant charged with larceny from lodgings at Hednesford, on 18th instant:— JAMES SHUKER, miner, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and complexion, slight light moustache, blue eyes, rather stout build, large nose, with Jump on centre ; dressed in soft black felt hat, brown cloth jacket, striped vest and trousers, single, native of Ketley, Salop. Shuker absconded with his landlady, taking 2 cotton Sheets, and a market Basket. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Whalley, Hednes- ford, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, April 24. Absconded from Bournemouth on 2nd install^, charged on warrant with stealing 2 Casks and 1 Bag ( recovered) :— SAMUEL OSBORNE, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, light brown hair, grey or light blue eyes, fair complexion, very little whiskers or moustache ; diessed when absconded iu light suit, light billycock h « t, and dark overcoat. Information to Inspector Alexander, Hants Constabulary, Bournemouth.— Bolt- sir let, April 21. Absconded on 18th instant, charged on wariant with stealing .£ 100 in Gold :— G. F. HORSFALL, a clerk, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, thin build, very fair complexion, light hair, smart appsarance, good address; dressed in black ribbed cutaway coat and vest, light trousers and black billycock. Information to Supt. Robinson, Detec- tive Office, Birmingham.— Bow- street, April 21. Committed for trial to Stafford General Quarter Sessions, charged with stealing two Shirts and a Shawl, recovered, at Burslem, on 8th instant:— WILLIAM HENSHAW, alias WILLIAM THOMPSON, painter, 46 yearB of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, turning grey, hazel eyes, medium build, tattooed right arm, ' G. U. N. E. B.', wreath with ' C. R.' in centre, bracelet on wrist, table and cross back of hand, ring on third finger; left arm, Rancoon and anchor, bracelet on wrist, gunner on back of hand, ring on third linger, ' D. D. D.' on left side ; says he is a native of Canada, single; dressul in black hard felt hat, hairy cap, grey tweed jocket, brown cloth and black cloth vests, with sleeves, brown tweed; trousers, patched on knees, red piaid scarf, check shirt, and old strong lace- tip boots ; states he arrived from France about 7 weeks ago, and was discharged from the American Navy in 1873 ; was convicted at Glossop on 19th December last, of felony, and sentenced to a mouth's imprisonment. Absconded from Trench, Ellesmere, charged on a war- rant with stealing, on 17th instant, £ 2 10s. in Gold : — JANE JONES, a tramping woman, 60 years of age, about 6 feet 4 inches high, palo comtilexion, thin face, high cheek es, has lost nearly all her teeth, very little hair which is , ayd worn down around her ears ; dressed in a black crape bonnet, black scarf shawl, and a light grey winsev dress, with a towof broad black braid around, about SinclwR from the bottom. She occasionally tramps the country with another woman, and slays either in common lodging- houses or casual wards. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough. Oswestry, or to P. S. Walters, Ellesmere, Salop, who hold the warrant — Bow- street, April 21. Absconded on 31st ultimo, from Coleford, Somersetshire, charged with stealing a silver lever Watch ( recovered, pawned in Bristol):— ELISHA MOORE, a native of Coleford, Somersetshire, coal minervabout 60 yearn of age, 5 feet 3 or 4inckeB high, daik complexion, little whiskers at side of face, turning grey, little round shouldered, thin face, large mouth ; dressed in black frock coat, cord trousers, black billycock hat, all much worn. Supposed in some part of Wales. Has a brother living at 15, Cwmtillery, near Newport, Monmouth- shire, where ho is most likely to be found, or in some mining district in Wales. Information to Sergeaut John Westcott. Police Station, Kilmersdon, near Bath, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st'eet, April 19. Absconded on 30th ultimo :- EDWARD CHANNING BARLOW, Secretiry to Upper Mill Industrial Co- operative Society, limited, charged on war ant with stealing £ 8!) 5s. 6d. He is well known in Manchester aud Liverpool, has a brother in Natal, and may leave the country ; 36 years of age, 5 ft. 6 inches high, slender J& uild, stoops rather, sallow complexion, brown hair, slight moustache ana whiskers, may have shaved, a clerk and agent; has also been manager in a cotton mill ; born at Saddleworth, where he also last resided ; education good, irregular bad teeth, walks with a quick steo, hangs his held down, and generally with both hands in trousers pickets; hai a downcast look, and unable to look : a any one whsn talking, always carries large sums of money abcut with' him, aud is now supposed to hive upwards of £ 200 in his posses- sion. Information to Inspector Stott, Saddleworth.- Bow- t treat, April 19. Wanted at Wakefield, charged on warrant with stealing 59 yards of ( cloth ( recovered):- WILLIAM JOHN CHAS. HENRY PRINCE, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 » inches high, blue eyes, light hair, sallow complexion, no whiskers, light sandy moristache, slim build, thumb off left band, left arm tittco.' d with fish, anchor,^ tari>, half moon, and some initials in Latin, a native of Lasswade, neat Edinburgh. He has been in the army and navy, and wan sentenced to 6 months hard labour for desertion at Bath ; dressed when last seen iu brown mixture coat aud vest, light coloured trousers, black billycock hat, and elastic side bouts, lie is a notorious thief. Infor- mation to Chief Constable Claikson, Borough Police Office, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 19. Stoleu at New Brighton on 8th iustai t:— a large Bilver Locket with raised monogram letters ' A. E. J.', attached to a silver Chain with long plain links conuected by small balls ; a lady's dress ring ( old), mounted with opals aud garnets ; a large white ostrich Feather. Supposed by a servant, about 23 years of age, ( looks o! dui), 4 feet 10 inches high, dark brown hair, blue eyes, sallow complexion ; dressed in black cloth jacket, trimmed with fur, black hat aud feather, brown dress, speaks with a strong north of Ireland accent. Information to Chief Supt. Egerton, County Hall, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, April 19. Absconded on 7ih instant, charged ou a warrant with embezzlement : - ARTHUR NEWTON, alias CLAISE, alias TEMPLE, a medical student, 28 years of age, looks older, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, short thick curly reddy- brown moustache aud small whiskers, gentlemanly appearance, of good address, speaks with a drawl, short- sighted, wears glasses, probably wearing a silk hat, maker Beatley, Norwich. Information to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Norwich.— Bow- st, April 19. Absconded 14lh instant, charged with stealing .£ 35, Gold and Silver, and a £ 5 Bank of England Note:— EDWARD WHITELL, 15 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, « ark com- plexion, eyec, and liuir ( curly); dressed iu brown overcoat, dark under ditto, light tweed trousers, soft felt hat, side spring boots. Supposed to have a revolver iu his possession. Friends reside at 82, Jamaica Street, Commercial Road, E , warrant issued. Remanded until 20th instant, ou a charge of htealing a Watch ( recovered), at Fakenham, Norfolk, on 15th inst. :— GEORGE BAINES, 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light ci mplexion and hair, no whiskers, brown eyes, a groom ; dressed in brown tweed cnt& vest, brown corduroy breeches, brown leather gaiters, lace up boots, blue cloth cap and white neckerihief; a native of Edith Weston, Rutlandshire. This man was released from Pentonville Prison on license, 21st March last, and removed to Oldbury on 12th instant; on 15th instanthe notified his intention of removing to Burton, but has not yet been seen here. He was convicted at Sheffield on 20th August, 1872, for larceny, and committed for a month ; at Derby, March Assize, 1873, for stealing boots and sentenced to 12 months, and at Worcester Sessions on 16th October, 1876, for larceny by servant, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision.
