POLICE PTIBLTSI& EIR gutfjoritg-. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The. Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that hat been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6744 FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 1882. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications ID reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, tegether with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by fne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without ihe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 16th instant, the body of a newly born male child • was found in the river Sow at Stafford, wrapped in part cf a copy of the Liverpool Daily Post Newspaper, dated 21th February, 1881. An inquest was held upon tbe body on 17th instant, and from the evidence of the doctor it was shown that the child had received an injury to the back of the head which caused death, and after death put into the water, where it must have been for at least six or eight days. The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons uuknown. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, The Green, or to Inspector Chaplain, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, March 20. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Some evil- disposed person wilfully set fire to the farm buildings at Old Learmouth, near Cornhill, Northumberland, about 10 p. m. on 11th instant, whereby two Stables, a large Granary with a quantity of Oorn, and two Hay Houses were destroyed, and five Horses suffocated. Information to Mr. Supt. Marshall, Lowick, Beal, Northumberland.— Bow- street, March IT. FORGERY. Charged on a warrant with forgery :— CHAS. STEELE, alias CHAS. SABEY, alias J. H. GIRLING, 35 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, full beard, whiskers, and moustache, right leg been broken walks lame; wore a plain gold ring, luckle pattern, on third finger of left hand, a similar one on little finger of right hand, speaks with strong London accent; well dressed in a light tweed suit, or a dark diagonal frock ccat, vest and trousers, boots with fashionable pointed toes ; left Manchester by 4.15 p. m. train for London or Birmingham on 27th ultimo. He presents a cheque on the London and County Banking C<., Ld", Islington Branch, purporting to be signed by Goldberg and Langder, which is a forgery. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Rawlinson, Manchester.- - Bow- st., March 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of ESTHER HAMMOND, charged on war- rant with stealing from a thild at Wymondham, on 4th inst., a black Muff, lined with red flannel, and some Coppers :— she is from 35 to 40 years of age, rather tall, fresh com- plexion, brown hair turning grey, walks upright, and smart appearance ; dressed in black dress frilled at the bottom, black jacket trimmed with fur, small black bonnet with short fall; a native of Seething, Noifolk. She represents herself as being the widow of a sea captain, and pretends to have £ 700 or .£ 800 to take at some bank or solicitor's effice, and by these and other false statements she obtains lodging, food, and both public and private houses. Information to Inspector Caton, Wymondham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen from the person in Manchester, on 17th instant: — a gold lever centre second stop Watsh, 2 oz. cases, 3 pair jewelled, No. 53472 | 4. £ 5 reward will be paid by the owner on recovery of the Watch aud conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen from a Lady's Satchel at the Railway Station, Middlesbrough, on 17th instant at 12 40 p. m. :— a purple coloured leather Purse, with steal ornaments at each corner and steal clasp, which is broken and fastened with an elastic band, supposed to have 3 or 4 conipariments, which contained 5 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, the numbers of which wiil be among the following, probably 4 of them are the four first named :— 27273 Newcastle 12— 7— 75, 04144 Leeds 2— 6— 80, 58941 London 4— 11— 81, 36213 ditto 3— 10— 81, 16287 ditto 3- 12- 81, 06764 ditto 2— 11— 81, 22847 ditto 7— 11— 81, 68247 ditto 2— 12— 81, 15131 ditto 2— 6- 81 ; £ 2 10s. in Gold ; some Silver ; several 2id. and ld. postage Stamps ; and a first class Railway Pass from Barnard Castle, to all places East, date of issue 1st January, 1882, name Mrs. Hanson, Southfield Villas, Middlesbrough, ' Lofthouse, Cleve- land,' at bottom of ticket. Supposed to have been stolen by a tall woman, with dark eyes, and respectably dressed, and a young man of short stature. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, or to Mr. Thomas Armstrong, Supt. of Railway Police, Middlesbrough.— Bow- street, March 20. Stolen from the person at Burtor.- under- Needwood on 11th instant :— an English silver Lever Watch,. maker ' Prid- ham, Queen's- road, Bayswater, No. 7762.' Information to the Superintendent, Burton- on- Trent.— Bow- street, March 17. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Remanded at Kidhurst till 29th instant, charged with having been found close to Up- Pack House with house- break- ing implements in his possession ( a companion who was assisting him to carry a ladder, escaping):— a ma: t who states his name to be HENRY HARRIS, a carpenter, a native of Leicester, is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8| or 9 inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, whiskers and moustache inclined to be red, medium build, crooked nose inclined to one side, anchor tattooed on back of right band, device with flags, anchor on inside of right forearm, the word ' Boulter' on out- side, mole on right shoulder, small scar on back, wart on left hip ; dressed in brown tweed suit, black overcoat with velvet collar, felt hat, and elastic side boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Clarke, Midhurst, Sussex.— Bow- street, March 24. Charged with housebreaking at Wolstanton, on 20th instant:— a man, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, light complexion, light hair, slender baild, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in light mixture cloth jacket and trousers, much worn, dirty white muffler, light coloured cloth cap, with peak and clogs. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, or to Sergeant Hughes, Police Station, Wolstanton, Staffordshire.— Bow- Street, March 22. Wanted under warrant on a charge of shopbreaking and stealing a quantity of Boots and other articles ( a portion recovered), in Macclesfield, on 21st December last:— JAMES STOREY, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair and moustache, slender build, and has a peculiar look in one eye ; native of Birmingham. And JANE STOREY, about 22 or 24 years of age, about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, moderate build, and fresh complexion ; said to be a native of Worcester. Information to Chief Con- stable Sheasby, Macclesfield, Cheshhe.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 18th, or morning of 19tli instant, from the house of Derwydd, Llan- fihangel- glyn- myp, in the county of Merioneth :—.£ 1,830 in fiold, and £ 200 in Notes ( uumbers not known), one £ 50 Note of date piior to 1878. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Edward Evans, of Derwydd, to any person or persons that will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. " Information to Inspector Williams, Corwen, or to the Chief Constable, Bala, N. Wales. — Bow street, March 22, Stolen from the bedroom of Mr. James Walker, farmer, of Chew Stoke, Somerset, about 8 p. m. 18th instant, by means of placing a ladder at the window :— a lady's gold Geveva Watch, with flowered case, a large gold linked guard Chain attached ; a lady's gold finger Ring, set with ten stones, four red, and six of a light green colour ; aud a gold Brooch, set with plain stone. Information to Mr. Supt. Etnson, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bow- street, March 22. Wanted on warrant, charged with burglary at Ardingly, Sussex, on the night of the 23rd ultimo; also for breaking and entering a carpenter's shop, at Ardingly, Sussex, on the night of 22nd December last, and stealing a quantity of car- penter's Tools ( portions since recovered), and other off- nces : — WM. BROWN, alias BIRDCATCHER BILL, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, very dark hair, rather bald on top of head, very dark curly whiskers and moustache, medium figure ; sometime^ wears a moleskin jacket, black waistcoat, and cord trousers, sometimes a guernsey with red stripes; generally makes his home in Somer's Town, works on new railroads, where he commits robberies of different kinds; well acquainted with several gaugers on new lines, is a professional thief ; was seen on the new line of railway at Chalk Tunnel, Godstone, Surrey, on 10th instant; also at Croydon with a man called " Gloucester Bill, advertised in Police Gazette of Dec. 30th, 1881. also on 6th instant. Information to the Chief Constable's Ollice, Lewes, oi to Mr. Supt. Avery, Cuckfield, Sussex, who hold the warrant for his apprehension, or to Mr. Supt. Berry, East Grinstead.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen between 11 am. and 1 p. m. 14th instant, by means of housebreaking :— a Canary, green colour. Supposed by a man about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches liigl), slender build, broad face, light complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in black cap, with peak, short dark mixture jacket, light cord or moleskin trousers, and clogs. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, or to Sergeant Hughes, Police Station, Wolstanton, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, March 17. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field at North Minima, Herts, during ihe night of 20th instant:— a light bay Horse, 15 hands, a! uut 7 years old, short tail, no shoes, has the appearance of liaviig been hard worked and badly treated. Information to Mr. Supt. Clarke, A Division, Herts Constabulary, Ware.— By- street, March 24. Description of WM. GILBY FLETCHER, charged on a warrant with having during the night of 9th instant, at Norton Disney," near Lincoln, stolen two Steers ( recovered) :— ho is about SS years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, ark halt, moustache, and whiskers down sides of face, shaves under chin, round features, fresh coloured, good looking, pro- portionate build, and smart appearance; a native of Byrgb, near Spilsby, Lincolnshire, but has lived at Norton Disney ; frequents brothels and low public- houses, & c. ; not well euy. cated, but cunning, fierce in manner, and well known ac Bradford, Boston, and Sleaford, aud has lived in London about 2 years ago ; cab driving, ' busman, or ostlering is his usual occupation ; dressed in a stiff black hard felt hat, which he wears often at the back of his head, dark reefer jacket, dark vest, striped cloth trousers of lighter colour, and light lace- up boots. He will most likely change his clothes and obtain new ones, as he would have about £ 20, the proceeds of the robbery, in bis possession when I19 left SItaford for Lon- don on 13th instant, in company with a girl, who has since left him and returned to her home, near Sleaford. Informa- tion to Inspector Wilson, Kesteven Police Station, Lincoln. — Bow sireet, March 24. Stolen from a field at Tettenhall during the night of 10th instant:— two bay Fillies, one four years old, 15 hands 2 or o inches high, white star on forehead, black points, short bang tail, fired on both hocks, throughbred and in good condition ; the other three years old, 15 hands high, white star on fore- head, black points, tail cut square at hocks, large head, long body, half bred and in goad condition. Information to Inspector Barrett, Tettenhall, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on 17th instant, from Gravel- lane, High- road, Chigwell:— an iron givy Gelding, 13$ hands high, large sheath, in good condition ; supposed taken to Saffron Walden. Information to the Director of Criminal Investiga- tions, Graat Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, March 22. Stolen during the night of 16th instant, from a stable aud shed at Thornw: ood Common, North Weald Bassett;— a chest- nut Cob Gelding, about 14 hands 2 inches high, ring bone on forefeet, square cut tail; also a light spring Cart, paioted green, green axles, low front, with a piece of German silver on top of dash board, one wing broken, aud an old set of brass- mounted Harness. £ 10 reward for such information as shall lead to the recovery of the same and also the conviction of the offender and offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. Simp- son, Police Sta'. ion, Epping.— Bow- street, March 22, Wanted on a charge of stealing two Heifers ( recovered), from Stock Green, Feckenbata, on the morning of 14th inst.; — a man, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, long face, thin compressed lips, daik hair and whiskers, inclined to grey, whiskers on side of face, other parts shaved ; has a peculiar gait, and throws his feet out very much when walking; dressed in blue pilot coat and waist- coat, cord trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Jeffrey, Bromsgrove.— Bow- street, March 20. Stolen on 25th ultimo, from a field called Bridge Ground, adjoining the Tiverton Turnpike Gate, Bishop's Nympton, Devon :— a horn Ewe Sheep and 2 horn Lambs, each marked ' W. B.' on near side, and a heart on the oflf pin. The ewe also ' W. B.' burnt in on off horn. Information to Mr. Supt. Wood, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen from a field at Berkeswell, during the night of 6th instant ;— two Stirks, one very light roan, most red on neck, ths other red roan, with red neck, aud small red patches on back, in calf, both in poor condition. LARCENY A ID EMBEZZLEMENT " Wanted uuder warrants as servant, & e :— EDWARD ALFRED COUPE, about 31 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark brown hair, going bald, dark blue eyes, reddish face, no whiskers, small light brown moustache, cut mark under left eye, wears a keeper ring on left hand, lace- up boots ; slenler build, weighs about 9i stone. Supposed to have eloped with a young - woman, about 22 years of age, 5 feet high, dark complexion, stout; dressed in black; who has friends in Buckland ioad, Landport, Portsmouth. Informa- tion to the Chief Constable, Salford, Lancashire,— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Macclesfield, on 13th instant : — a lady's gold Geneva Watch, white dial, chased back ; a lady's gold Ohain, double links, small curb pattern, had attached a single gold Locket, forget- me not flawer on back, and portiait of lady in front, also some silver Trinkets; a lady's gold Ring, set with ruby ; a lady's gold Ring, with five ametfcysts in row; a lady's gold Ring, with five turquoise in cluster ; a lady's 18 carat gold Keeper, squares eDgraved on it; a lady'a plain gold Ring, with two stones lost out ; a silver Locktt, chased back, had attached a silver Chain, curb pattern, the locket has the portrait of a lady and gentleman in it, the latter in tin drees of the engineers, with several medals on breast; a pair of 18 carat gold Ear- rings, round hoop pattern; a gold plated Brooch, with portrait of gentleman painted; a silver filigree Brooch, with cameo head; an American silver Brooch, round, set with malachite; a silver Brooch, white stone with flower iu centre, composed of silver and rubies ; and a pair of gold Eye- glasses. By GEO. CLEMENTS, who lodged ou the premises for a week, said to have been iu the employment of drapers, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, boyish appearance, fair com- plexion, 110 hair on face, light hair, parted iu centre, and friuge down on forehead, fine set of teeth which he shows plainly ; wore browa tweed reefer coat, with black bone buttons, blue serg-; trousers, low shoes with drab cloth tops, black felt hat, white scaif with silver piu ; frequents skatiug rinks and public- houses. Information to Chief Constable Sheasbv, Borough Police, Macclesfield, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 22. Charged with larceny from lodgings at Burton- on- Trent, on 17th instant:— two plasterers, one is 40 year3 of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light brown hair cut short, medium build, chean shaved, flat nose ; dressed in a light tweed coat and vest, cotton cord trousers, and black billycock hat; the other is 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, dark brown hair and moustache, broad set, ordinary looking; dressed in a light cloth coat and corduroy trousers. Stolen— two white damask Table Cloths, both about 1} yard long by li yard wide, quite new ; six flax Towels, about - J yard loDg by J yard wide, one is smaller and newer than the others ; a woman's white Nightdress, with embroidery round neck and wristbands, four tucks down each side ; a girl's unbleached ditto; a plain white unbleached Chemise, torn a little down front ; a lady's bleached ditto ; two baby's flannel Petticoats, one long, [ the other short, all wet from the wash, value 16s. They lodged in the White Horse Inn, Burton, since 14th instant. Information to the Superintendent, Buiton- on- Treufc.— Bow- street, March 20. Absconded from Leighton Buzzard on 11th instant charged with fowl stealing :— JOHN WESTON, a gardener, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale face, [ dark brown hair, slight dark moustache, has shaved, but may let his whiskers grow, has a scar on his forehead, slightly para- lysed, shakes right leg when walking, almost stops every few steps, and gives himself a shake, and throws his head from side to side when talking ; dressed in old dark coat and vest, cord trousers, heavy boots, and black hard felt hat which he wears; back he has a mother named Chalton, residing at Basingstoke. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Leighton Buzzard, Beds, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension,-— Bow- street, March 20. Any person, who in the first place gives such information that will lead to the conviction of any person or persons for stealing from Cabs in any district of the Metropolis the Rugs, Capes, Whips, or any other Article belonging to the Driver, will receive One Guinea Reward on application to the Offices of the Amalgamated Cab- Drivers' Society and Centaur, 15, Poland Street, W.- Baw- street, March 20. Stolen at Kirkburton, between 6th and 12th instant: — an old English gold lever Watch, gold dial, engine- turned case, had ' Set hands' engraved on inside inner case, had attached an alumininum gold - Albert with lion Seal; also 2 Sovereigns in Gold, and Is. in Silver. Supposed by a man 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair and eyes, long ginger whiskers and moustache, slender build, and has a bad ( left) leg ; he has been In the army ; dressed in rough'blue railway slack backed Jacket, old brown plaid trousers and vest, muller hat, and low shoes, both cut down the front to ease his feet. Sometime since he was employed ou the railway at Hebden Bridge. He is a Dative of Horbury. Information to Mr. Supt. Goodall, West Riding Constabulary Office, Huddersfield.— Bow- si., March 20. Stofen from a dwelling- house at Wavertree, about 11 a. m., 10th instant:— a lady's small silver lever Watch, whits dial, gold hands and joints and seconds fingers, engine- turned cases, maker 1 John James, Liverpool'; number not known. By a man, 35 yeais of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, sallow complexion, slim built, dark brown hair and moustache, shaved clean down sides of face; dressed in a grey tweed monkey jacket, with narrow stripe, black cloth trousers, stron" lacs- up boots. Information to the County Police Office" Prescot, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 17. " Wanted oa a warrant charged with stealing about 20th ultimo, a Bill of Exchange for £ 420:— PETER EMIL WEEKE, about 45 years of age, but looks older, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, he stoops and is rather bow legged, pointed features, very near and weak sighted, has generally worn spectacles, hair very thin, whiskers beard and moustache, all turning grey, has a wen on the corner of one eye, thought to be the right one, also scars behind the ears and whiskers, owing to recent application of blisters. Information to Chief Constable Campbell, Hull.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen from a farm at Blackley, between 12 noon, 11th and 7 a. m., 13th iast.:— a Hand Saw, Oil Stone, 2 i- in. Chisels, a i- in. ditto, gill Oil Can, Smoothing Plane, Jack ditto, 2- foot Rule, and brass Bevel ( all stamped ' Wm. Clayton), a Spirit Level and Hammer. , , , , Stolen from a clothes line at Sandy Brow, Blackley, between 1 and 5! p m., 13th :— 4 pairs of white calico Drawers, two lady's two child's; 2 lady's white calico Chemisea, a child's calico Nightdress, a boy's red and white striped cotton Shirt, a white calico Bolster Cover, a printed Pinafore with long sleeves, a Pompadour with ditto ; 2 white holland Aprons, one bound blue ; a blue and white striped ditto ; 4 printed ditto, much faded ; a grey roller Towel, a white cotton Sheet, and a white flannel Vest, all much worn. Supposed by a man and woman who were begging in the district, but no desciip- tioa can be given. Information to the County Polic Office, Old TralTord, Man- chester.— Bow- street, March 17. Charged with two others ( who are on remand till 18th instant), with stealing £ 1 3s. at Luton, on 15th instant:— a man about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight moustache, very slight whiskers ; dressed in a 1 ght coat and vest, and dark trousers, his parents reside within two doors of No. 5, Ebury- gardens, Pimlico. Information to Head Con- stable Ja quest, Borough Police, Luton, Beds.— Bow- street, March 17. Wanted on a warrant charged with stealing wearing Apparel on 6tli instant:— ROBERT CARSON, hair dresser, 40 to 45 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, round full face, fresh fcomplexion, light hair, inclined to curl and parted in centre, li^ lit moustache, military appearance, and states he has been iu the army, has large joint ou great toe of one foot, and has the boot cut in consequence, he is tatooed on each wrist in imitation of bracelet, and sailor on left arm ; wore shabby black clothing, and black billycock hat. Information to Chief Constable Baiker, Birkenhead, Cheshire.— Bow- street, Ma- ch 17.
