CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has Leen stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6743 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 1882. Notice.— It is requested that all communication! for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offendera, or itolon property, may bear the Signature of tiro person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in referenoe to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to the JEditor, Polioe Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it ia indispensably necessary that an information thould be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offenoe charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertiaement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Ai no charge ii made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Form* 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering reward8 must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tiie persona forwarding them. They should oontain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. Stolen from a Lady's Satchel at the Bailway Station, Middlesbrough, on 17th instant at 12 40 p. m. :— a purple coloured leather Purse, with steal ornaments at each corner, and steal clasp, which is broken and fastened with an elastic band, supposed to have 3 or 4 compartments, which contained 5 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, the numbers of which will be among the following, probably < a of them are the four first named :— 27273 Newcastle 12— 7— 75, 04144 Leeds 2— 6— 80, 58941 London 4— 11— 81, 36213 ditto 3- 10— 81, 3- 12— 81, 2— 11— 81, 7— 11— 81, 2- 12— 81, 2— 6- 81; £ 2 10. J. in Gold ; some Silver ; several 2Jd. and Id. postage Stamps ; and a first class Railway Pass from Barnard Castle, to all places East, date of if sue 1st January, 1882, name Mrs. Hanson, Southfield Villas, Middlesbrough, 1 Lofthouse, Cleve- land,' at bottom of ticket. Supposed to have been stolen by a tall woman, with daik eyes, aud respectably dressed, and a young man oil short stature. Stolen from the person at Burton- under- Needwood on llth instant:— an English silver Lever Watch, maker ' Prid- ham, Queen's- road, Bayswater, No. 7762.' Information to the Superintendent, Burton- on- Trent.— Bow street, March 17. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 16th instant, the body of a newly born male child was found in the river Sow at Stafford, wrapped in part of a copy of the Liverpool Daily Post Newspaper, dated 2 tth February, 1881. An inque3t was held upon tbe body on 17th instant, aud from the evidence of the doctor it was shown that the child had received an injury to the back of the head which caused death, and after death put into the water, where it must have beeu for at least six or eight days. The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown. Description of JOHN FLINN, alias BONEY FLINT, alias NOTTINGHAM BOUGH, committed to t » ke his trial at the next Derby Assizes, on a charge of Murder :— he is 38 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, light brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, very much poet marked, he ia a low horse dealer, and a noted pugilist, and has been in the habit of frequentiug fairs all over Eogland Information to Inspector Emery, Boro Police OTice, Chester- field.— Bow- street, March 15. 16287 06764 22847 68247 15131 ditto ditto ditto ditto ditto short dark mixture jacket, light cord or moleskin trousers, and clogs. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, or to Sergeant Hughes, Police Station, Wolstanton, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, March 17. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Some evil- disposed person wilfully set fire to the farm buildings at Old Learmouth, near Cornhill, Northumberland, about 10 p. m. on llth instant, whereby two Stables, a large Granary with a quantity of Oorn, and two Hay Houses were destroyed, and five Horses suffocated. Information to Mr. Supt. Marshall, Lowick, Beal, Northumberland.— Bow- street, March 17. FORGERY. Charged on a warrant with forgery :— CHAS. STEELE, alias CHAS. SABEY, alias J. H. GIRLING, 35 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches higb, stout build, full beard, whiskers, and moustache, right leg been broken, walks lame ; wore a plain gold ring, I uckle pattern, on third finger of left baud, a similar one on little linger of right hand, speaks with strong London accent; well dressed iu a light tweed suit, or a dark diagonal frock coat, vest and trousers, boot* with fashionable pointed toes ; left Manchester by 4.15 p. m. train for London or Birmingham on 27th ultimo. He presents a cheque on the London and County Banking Co., Ld*, Islington Branch, purporting to be Bigned by Goldberg and Langder, which is a forgery. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Rawlinson, Manchester.— Bow- at., March 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in Manchester, on 17th instant: — p gold lever centre secoud stop Wat^' i, 2 e/, cases, 3 pair BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Charged with housebreaking at Wolstanton, on 20th instant:— a man, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, light complexion, light hair, slender build, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in light mixture cloth jacket and trousers, much worn, dirty white muffler, light coloured cloth cap, with peak and clogs. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, or to Sergeant Hughes, Police Station, Wolstanton, Staffordshire.— Bow- ttreet, March 22. Wanted under warrant on a charge of shopbreaking and stealing a quantity of Boots and other articles ( a portion recovered), in Macclesfield, on 2lst December last:— JAMES STOREY, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair and moustache, slender build, and has a peculiar look in one eye; native of Birmingham. And JANE STOREY, about 22 or 24 years of age, about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, moderate build, and fresh complexion ; said to be a native of Worcester. Information to Chief Con- stable Sheasby, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 18th, or morning of 19th instant, from the house of Derwydd, Llan- fihangel- glyn- myp, in the county of Merioneth ;—.£ 1,830 in Gold, and £ 200 in Notes ( numbers not known), one £ 50 Note of date prior to 1878. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Edward Evans, of Derwydd, to any person or persons that will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Inspector Williams, Corwen, or to the Chief Constable, Bala, N. Wales. — Bow s'. reet, March 22. Stolen from the bedroom of Mr. James Walker, farmer, of Chew Stoke, Somerset, about 8 p. m. 18th instant, by means of placing a ladder at the window :— a lady's gold Geveva Watch, with flowered case, a large gold linked guard Chain attached ; a lady's gold finger Ring, set with ten stones, lour red, and six of a light green colour ; and a gold Brooch, set with plain stone. Information to Mr. Supt. Emson, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bow- strect, March 22. Wanted on warrant, charged with burglary at Ardingly, Sussex, on the night of the 23rd ultimo; also for breaking and entering a carpenter's shop, at Ardingly, Sussex, on the night of 22nd December last, and stealing a quantity of car- penter's Tools ( portions since recovered), and other offences : - WM. BROWN, alias BIRDCATCHER BILL, about 35 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches higb, dark complexion, very dark hair, rather bald on top of head, very dark curly whiskers and moustache, medium figure ; sometimes wears a moleskin jacket, black waistcoat, and cord trousers, sometimes A guernsey with red stripes; generally makes his home iu Somer's Town, works on new railroads, where he commits robberies of different kinds; well acquainted with several gangers on new lines, is a professional thief; was seen on the new line of railway at Chalk Tunnel, Godstone, Surrey, on 10th instant; also at Croydon with a man called " Gloucester Bill, advertised in Police Gazette of Dec. 30th, 1881, also on flth instant. Information to the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, oi to Mr. Supt. Avery, Cuckfield, Sussex, who hold the warrant for hi^ apprehmsion, or to Mr. Supt. Berry, East Grinstead.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen between 11 am. and 1 p. m. 14th instant, by means of housebreaking : — a Canary, green colour. Supposed by a man about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, slender build, broad face, light complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in bl; ick cap, with peak. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field at Tettenhall during the night of 10th instant:— two bay Fillies, one four years old, 15 hands 2 or i inches higb, white star on forehead, black points, short bang tail, fired on both hocks, throughbred and in good condition ; the other three years old, 15 hands high, white star on fore- head, black points, tail cut square at hocks, large head, long body, half bred and in goed condition. Information to Inspector Barrett, Tettenhall, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, March 22. The Horse, Trap, and Harness, stolen from Coventry, and described in Police Gazette of 3rd instant, have been recovered in London, and two men who stole the same are in custody.— Bow- itreet, March 22. Stolen on 17th instant, from Gravel- lane, High- road, Chigwell:— an iron grey Gelding, 13J hands higb, large sheath, in good condition ; supposed taken to Saffron Walden. Information to the Director of Criminal Investiga- tions, Graat Scotland Yard, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, March 22. Stolen during the night of 16tli instant, from a stable and shed at Thornwood Common, North Weald Bassett,:— a chest- nut Cob Gelding, about 14 hands 2 inches high, ring bone on forefeet, square cut tail; also a light spring Cart, painted green, green axles, low front, with a piece of German silver on top of dash board, one wing broKen, and an old set of brass- mounted Harness. £ 10 reward for such information as shall lead to the recovery of the same and also the conviction of the offender aud offenders, Information to Mr. Supt. Wanted'ou a charge of stealing two Heifn's '-^ covered), from Stock Green, Feckenbam, on the morning of 14th inst. : — a man, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, long face, thin compressed lips, dark hair and whiskers, inclined to grey, whiskers on side of face, other parts shaved; has a peculiar gait, and throws his feet out very much when walking; dressed in blue pilot coat and waist- coat, cord trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Jeffrey, Bromsgrove.— Bow- street, March 20. Stolen on 25th ultimo, from a field called Bridge Ground, adjoining the Tiverton Turnpike Gate, Bishop's Nympton, Devon :— a horn Ewe Sheep and 2 horn Lambs, each marked ' W. B.' on near side, and a heart on the off pin. The ewe also ' W. B.' burnt in on off horn. Information to Mr. Supt. Wood, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen from a field at Berkeswell, during the night of 6th instant :— two Stirks, one very light roau, most red on neck, the other red roan, with red neck, and small red patches on back, in calf, both in poor condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Hannah, Police Office, Longford, Coventry.— Bow- street, March 17. Found at Harmer Hill on 8th instant, supposed stolen : — a bay 2 year old Colt; and a black yearling Colt, with 3 white feet. Information to Mr. Supt. Edwards, Shrewsbury, or Police Constable Roberts, Harmer Hill, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, March 15. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT I Stolen from a dwelling- house in Macclesfield, on 13th instant:— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, white dial, chased back ; a lady's gold Chain, double links, small curb pattern, had attached a single gold Locket, forget- me not flower ou back, and portrait of lady in front, also some silver Tiiakets; a lady's gold Bing, set with ruby ; a lady's gold Ring, with five amethysts iu row; a lady's gold Bing, with five turquoise in cluster ; a lady's 18 carat gold Keeper, squares engraved on it"; a lady's plain gold Bing, with two stones lost out ; a silver Locket, chased back, had attached a silver Chain, curb saltern, the locket has the portrait of a lady and gentleman in it, the latter in tha dress of the engineers, with several medals on breast; a pair of 18 carat gold Ear- rings, round hoop pattern; a gold plated Brooch, with portrait of gentleman painted; a silver filigree Brooch, with cameo head; an American silver Brooch, round, set with malachite; a silver Brooch, white stone with ffower in centre, composed of silver and rubies ; and a pair of gold Eye- glasses. By GEO. CLEMENTS, who lodged on the premises for a week, said to have been in the employment of drapers, about 20 years of _ j, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, boyish appearance, fair com- plexion, no hair on face, light hair, parted in centre, and fringe down on forehead, fine set of teeth which he shows plainly ; wore brown tweed reefer coat, with black, bone buttons, blue serge trousers, low shoes with drab cloth tops, black felt hat, white scarf with silver pin ; frequents skating rinks and public- houses. Information to Chief Constable Sheasby, Borough Police, Macclesfield, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 28. Stolen— two white damask Table Cloths, both about yard long by li yard wide, quite new ; six flax Towels, about J yard long by J yard wide, one is smaller aud newer than the others ; a • woman's white Nightdress, with embroidery round neck and • wristbands, four tucks down each side ; a girl's unbleached ditto; a plain white unbleached Chemise, torn a little down front ; a lady's bleached ditto ; two baby's flannel Petticoat^ one long, ^ the other short, all wet from the wash, value 16s. Absconded from Leighton Buzzard on 11th instant ehwged with fowl stealing :— JOHN WESTON, a gardener, 80 years of age, S feet 6 or 6 inches high, pale face, [ dark brown hair, slight dark moustache, has shaved, but may let his whiskers grow, has a scar on his forehead, slightly para lyaed, shakes right leg when walking, almost stops every few steps, and gives himself a shake, and throws his head from eide to side when talking ; dressed in old dark coat and vest, cord trousers, heavy boots, and black hard felt hat which he wears; back he lias a mother named Chalton, residing at Basingstoke. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Leighton Buzzard, Beds, who holds a warrant for his appre, lienHion.— Bow- street, March 20. Any person, who in the first place gives such information that will leail to the conviction of any person or persons for stealing from Cabs in any district of the Metropolis the Rugs, Capes, Whips, or any other Article belonging to the Driver, • will receive One Guinea Reward on application to the Offices of the Amalgamated Cab- Drivers' Society and Centaur, 15, Poland Street, Vf.— Bow- street, March 20. Stolen at Kirkburton, between 6th and 12th instant: an old English gold lever Watch, gold dial, engine- turned case, had ' Set hauds' engraved on inside inner case, had attached an alumininum gold : Albert with lion Seal; also 2 Sovereigns in Gold, aud Is. in Silver. Supposed by a man 31 years of age, 6 feet 10 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair and eyos, long ginger whiskers and moustache, • lender build, and has a bad ( left) leg; he has been In the army ; dressed in rough'jblue railway slack backed Jacket, old brown plaid trousers and vest, niuller hat, and low shoes, both cut down the front to case his feet. Sometime since he was employed on the railway at Hebden Bridge. He is a native of Horbury. Information to Mr. Supt. Goodall, West Riding Constabulary Office, Huddersfield.— Bow- st., MarchZO, Stofen from a dwelling- home at Wavertree, about 11 a. m., 10th instant:— a lady's small silver lever Watch, - white dial, gold hands and joints and seconds fingers, engine- turned cases, maker ' John James, Liverpool'; number not known. By a mm, 35 yeais of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, sallow complexion, slim built, dark brown hair and moustache, shaved clean down sides of face; dressed in a grey tweed monkey jacket, with narrow stripe, black cloth trousers, strong lace- up boots. Iuformation to the County Police Office, Prescot, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 17. Wanted on a w-. rrant charged with stealing about 20th ultimo, a Bill of Exchange for .£ 120 :— PETER EMIL WEEKE, about 45 years of age, but looks older, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, ho stoops anil is rather bow legged, pointed features, very near and weak sighted, has generally worn spectacles, Lair very thin, whiskers beard and moustache, all turning grey, has a wen on the corner of one cyo, thought to be the right one, also scars behind the ears and whiskers, owing to recent application of blisters. Information to Chief Constable Campbell, Hull.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen from a farm at Blackley, between 12 noon, 11th and 7 am., 13th iust.:— a Hand saw, Oil Stone, 2 i- in. Chisels, a }- in. ditto, gill Oil Can, Smoothing Plane, Jack ditto, 2- foot Rule, aud brass Bevel ( all stamped ' Wm. Clayton), a Spirit Level and Hammer. Stolen from a clothes line at Sandy Brow, Blackley, between 1 aud % p. m., 13th :— 4 pairs of white calico Drawers, two lady's, two child's ; 2 lady's white calico Chemisea, a child's calico Nightdress, a boy's red and white striped cotton Shirt, a white calico Bolster Cover, a printed Pinafore with long sleeves, a Pompadour with ditto; 2 white holland Aprons, one bound blue; a blue and white striped ditto ; 4 printed ditto, much faded ; a grey roller Towel, a white cotton Sheet, and a white flannel Vest, all much worn. Supposed by a man and woman who wore begging in the district, but no descrip. tion can be given. Information to the County Polio Office, Old Trafford, Man- chester.— Bow- street, March 17. whiskers or moustache, has an abscess mark on neck; dressed ark cloth jacket and trousers, moleskin vest, and hat. ' RICHARD DEE, 16 yeais of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight bujild, thin face, light brown hair, light complexion, grey eye|^ has a small bum mark on top of head ; dressed in dark cl/ ffi jacket, light cloth vest, cord trousers, and black hard hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Whitehurst, " West Bromwich, or to Inspector Evans, Handsworth, near Birmingham, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, March 15. Further information respecting GODDARD BOOT- MAN ( advertised in Police Gazette of 3rd instant) :— he served about two years in the Suffolk constabulary, and has since been acting as groom to a doctor, laid ostler at an hotal; is a good groom, horse clipper and trimmer, can drive single or double; - when dressed is of sr. iart appearance, and of good address, he is likely to seek employment as groom or ostler at an > nn. Information to Mr. supt. Glasier, Mildenhall, Suffolk.— Bow- street, March 15. FELONIES. ( Ifot otherwise described.) Between 9 p. m. on 3rd insfart, and the morning of 4th instant, the Parish Church at West Worlington, Devon, was forcibly entered, and there was stolen therefrom a brass Cross, 2 feet high ; 2 do. Candlesticks ; 2 do. Vases ; a Sur- plice ; the Clappers of three of the bells, and the Screw Nuts of another; also the Harmonium Destroyed. Information to Mr. Supt. Wood, B Division, Devon Constabulary, South Molton.— Bow- street, March 17. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Absconded from Wellington on 11th instant, charged with obtaining Food and Lodgings by false pretences :— a man, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, whiskers aud moustache a little sandy, lost several front teeth, and has slight impediment in his speech ; dressed in a small black hard hat, black ribbed cloth jacket, strong lace- up boots with brass eyelet holes j stated that he belonged to Leeds, and that he was clerk to an auctioner in the neighbourhood. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ivins, Wellington.— Bow- street, March 20. Wanted on a Sheriff's warrant, on several charges of Fraud ( Long Firm Frauds), committed during January last, with one WM. HAYWOOD THOMAS, now in custody :— JOHN JOHNSTON, alias HARRY JOHNSTON, alias JOHN HENRY JOHNSTON, a native of Derby, where his father is a coal merchant and Town Councillor, 29 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair and eyes, dark complexion, stout make, tkick neck and broad shoulders, one leg a little bandy, having been broken, aud generally u^ es a walking stick. His w. fe is also a Derby woman, and was with him at Manchester when last heard of 5 oi C weeks ago, and he has an uncle ( supposed a confectioner) in Barrow- in- Furness. He is said to have travelled generally over Eng- land, to have a pedlar's certificate granted at Lutcn, in the name of Harry Johnson, on 2nd May, 1881, endorsed at St. Alban's 4th May, and at Scarborough 5th July, and to have dealt iu cheap jewellery and watches. He is a betting- man, attends the race meetings, is of low dissipated habits, was recently at Liverpool, Preston, & c., aud is well knowu to bet- ting men as a bookmaker and weloher.
