The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1882. CONTAINING Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICB GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offenoe charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the JPOLICH GAZETTE, all Iietters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid) otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forma 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t! ae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Middlesbrough, of 18th inst. : — an old- fashioned gold horizontal Watch, gold dial, No. 5674, English make. Stolen by means of Housebreaking at Luton, on 21st ' instant :— a gold Geneva Watcb, with seconds hands, glass cracked ; a small gold Locket, containing hair and compasses ; a gold Keeper, ' Mizpah' on outside ; a pair of gold Earrings, ' with turquoise settings; a small gold Brooch, with 3 grapes; a set of gold Earrings, Pendant and Chain to match ; a set of gold ear Wires, foreign make ; a Brooch, with small Coins attached ; a gold Garnet Brooch; a small gold Brooch, black enamel inside; a gold Bracelet, with turquoise; a pair of black Onyx, with Locket to match, and figure of little boy ; a Pendant, with amethyst and pearls ; a plated Brooch, dove carrying a letter ; and other articles of jewellry, ( since re- covered,). Supposed by a gas stoker, 42 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, very dark complexion, dirty appearance, is well ' known at Leicester, dressed in his working clothes ; accom- panied by an Irish woman, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet high, pale complexion, thin face, rather dejected appearance. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in Stockport, between / 9 a. m. and 8 p m. on 21st instant:— a gentleman's black cloth dress Coat, double breasted, two pockets in skirt behind, a pocket inside, black Italian lining, print lining in sleeves ; a black cloth Vest, single breasted; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fall fronts, lined down to the shin, to fit a short stout man ; a lady's black satin quilted Skirt, two flounces round bottom, nearly new ; a. do. brown fine corded Bodice, trimmed with black velvet, brown bone buttons down front and on cuffs, new; a holland Bodice, scalloped round bottom. trimmings worked in, part worn; a pair of linen Sheets ; a pair of bleached calico Sheets ; a doz. Nickle silver Table Spoons: a do. do. Tea Spoons ; a doz. do. do. Dinner Folks, four prongs; two dozen ditto ditto Salt Spoons; a yar of do. do. Sugar Tongs; a small imitation gold Brooch, with small purple stone in centre. Supposed by a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, supposed to have a moustache, slender build, and carried a small black Bag ; dressed in black overcoat and trousers, tall black silk hat, dux collar round neck, boots, respectably dressed, and is of good address. Stated he came from Didsbury. £ 1 reward will be given on apprehension of thief or thieves and recovery of the property, or iu proportion to the amount recovered. Charged on a warrant with housebreaking at Ossing Notts,, between 6 and 7 a. m., on 16th instant, and stealing therefrom :— a £ 5 Note ( recovered), a Sovereign ; a silver Lever Watch, No. 69489, maker ' Russell ;' a gold Albert Chain, and a long black Overcoat:— WILUAM PRESTLEY, a rough Painter, sometimes states he is a clerk, has worked ou the Midland Railway at Pye Bridge as a number taker, and is in the Notts. Militia; 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender build, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, large front teeth, scar on middle finger of left hand, one h » nd cut by glass ; dressed in dark check coat, black vest, dark brown trousers, black stiff billycock hat, old button boots, and the stolen coat. Information to Mr. Supt. Fisher, County Police Station, Newark, Notts.— Bow- street, February 24. Stolen by means of burglary, in Nottingham, on 16th or 17th instant :— a mail's Overcoat, brown tweed cloth, single- breasted, Chesterfield shape, usual pockets, lined on shoulders with same material, bone buttons, in good condition ; a pair of man's Boots, lace- up, brass eyelets, watertights, 4 hooks at tops, plates on heels, riveted, worn, but in good condition j a meerschaum Cigar Holder, head figure of a female, much carved, with Case ; a meerschaum Pipe, silver fenrle, amber tipped, bent stem, morocco Case ; a do. W.' on reverse side; a silver Hook with Chain and plain silver Pencil- case attached ; a gold engraved Pencil- case with cornelian Seal- top, engraved with coronet; an amethyst and diamond Ring ; gold sleeve Links; a pair of gold double ball Ear- rings. Supposed by three men with high dog cart and fast- trotting grizzle- coloured cob, who were seen driving hard towards London about 10 p ni. Information to Mr. Supt. Barnes, Tonbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, February 20. Charged at Romford with housebreaking : — a man, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, little whiskers on side of face, and slight moustache ; dressed in a dark overcoat, white muffler round neck, and hard felt hat, of very gentlemanly appearance and manner ; and a man, from 40 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fall face, and fresh complexion ; dressed in brown clothes, and had smart appearance. Information to Inspector Simmons, Police Office, Romford, Essex.— Bow- street, Feb. 20. Stolen by meats of housebreaking, between 7 and 8 pm. on the night of 12th instant, at Town's End, Halesowen :— a gold breast Pin, with small diamond in centre, ' J. A. R.' scratched on back ; a gold breast Pin, chain cable liuk, moveable ; 3 gold shirt Studs, with topaz stones ; 2 silver Solitaires; 2 gold plated do. ; 3 box Keys ; a brass Seal, 6 square, all different inscriptions, namely, a man with a fishing- rod and line, and ' drop this libe in hopes'; another ' I. O. U. abetter'; another, man with a ledger on his chin, and ' balancing accountsanother, a railway engine ; another, a Votre service ; and another, quill pen, ' tongue of the absent,' and a gold finger Ring set with oval sardonic stone. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Oldbury, or to Sergeant Raybould, Police Station, Halesowen, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, February 17. Stolen by means of burglary at Caterhamon 14th inst.:— a French Timepiece, pendulum missing ( name inside of case) ; 2 spade Guineas ( date 1796); 2 wedding Rings, gold ( very thin); a Overcoat, man's size, grey ribbed, 3 pockets outside, one inside breast; a black diagonal Jacket; a black herring- bone ditto. a black lady's diagonal Jacket, trimmed with fur ; a girl's Ulster, grey, Oxford tweed. Information to Mr. Supt. Bedford, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone. — Bow- street, February 17. Charged on a warrant with breaking and entering an ironmonger's shop, on 8th instant, and stealing therein : £ 1 Ids., a Coat, a Handkeichief, and a Diary for 1881 : — ALEXANDER CONNOLLY, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, thin face, hazel eyes, one eyelash deficient, light brown liair, very slight moustache,' A. C.' and several other marks tattooed on arms ; dressed in a black fancy cloth coat, white moleskin trousers, round hard felt hat, white muffler, and military boots. Has friends residing at Temple Cowley, near Oxford. Information to Head Constable Morton, Winchester, Hants.— Bow- street, February 17. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING The Mare stolen from North Warnborough, on the 28th ultimo, and advertised in Police Gazette of 6th instant, has been recovered by the Hants Constabulary, and a warrant has been issued for the apprehension of a man of the following description, charged with stealing the said Mare : — THOMS, alias STANLEY, NEWMAN, and WHITE. also nicknamed ' PIKEY,' a horse coper, and an associate of convicted horse stealers, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 qr G inches high, rather Btout built, dark complexion, dark hair, supposed inclined, to cuil, coarse features, is in the habit of occasionally shaving off bis whiskers, but may be found wearing them about 3 or 4 week's growth ; generally dressed in a grey or dark mixture check suit, of large pattern, coat of the style usually worn by horse copers, with rather large' buttons, and raised seams, tight- fitting trousers, dark brown or rusty blad$ r Muller- cut- down hat, and soioetim s wftwfljt dark mixture overcoat. As this man is without doubt a- y^ t expert horse stealer, it is extremely desirable that every possible effort should be made to secure his apprehension. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabu- lary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, F'eburary 22. Stolen on 1st instant, from Kingston- on- Thames:— a grey gelding Pony, ' 1 A.' branded on off shoulder ; a set of plated Harness, with initials ' T. H.' in monogram ; and a dog Cart, painted dark blue, monogram ' T. J. K.' thereon. By a man of gentlemanly appearance, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in light overcoat and trousers, hard black felt hat, who requested that the pony and cart might be sent to a given address, at which he represented that he resided, outside of which he met the man sent with the pony, and drove away. Information to the Director of Crimiral Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 22. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen during the night of 19th, or morning of 20th inst.: — two doe Polecat Ferrets, rather light colour, mixed with dark brown, and very sharp claws. Information to Mr. Supt. Lucas. County Police Station, Chichester, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 24. Stolen from a shop at Bradford, at 12 30 p m., 20th inst.: — two pairs of lady's elastic- si .'. e Boots, with toe- caps, machine stitched, size 5. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, and light hair; dressed in a dark blue over- coat and low pot hat. Information to the County Police Office, Old Trafi'ord, Manchester.— Bow- street, February 24. Wanted at Bangor, Carnarvonshire, Oi J warrant, charged with stealing two pairs of new Boots :— ANNE HUNT, 35 to 38 years of age, middle sized woman, slender build, dark hair, sallow'complexion ; she is accompanied by her husband, 37 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, btout build, dark hair, and small dark whiskers, full face, ruddy com- plexion ; dressed always like a navvy, black cloth monkey jacket, fustian vest and trousers, strong lace- up boots, and a Jim Crow hat, supposed to be a native of the South of Eng- land. He has been living at Hilmorton and at Kilsby, and working on the railway near Rugby as a navvy or a ganger about 8 months ago ; he came to be ganger on the Bangor and Bethesda new Railway, where he kept a hut and was selling beer without license, for which offence he was fined i/ 5 and costs, and now there is a warrant of commitment out for his apprehension. When he came to Bangor his furniture was booked from Rugby to Bangor, and on 4th instant they left and booked at Bangor for Birmingham. They have a little girl, named ' Anne', about 3 years , of age, and delicate- looking with them. Information to Inspector Hughes, Police Station, Bangor.— Bow- street, February 24. Wanted for stealing a valuable Clock, ! recovered), from the smoke- room of an Hotel, on the 21st instant:— a man, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or £ inches high, slender build, light brown hair, slight whiskers ; dressed in dark or black cutaway or morning coat, dark vest and troupers, round top'd hard felt hat, of gentlemanly appearance, and good address. s P O L I C E GAZETTE. Charged on a - warrant with stealing a Cash Box, con- taining £ 2, from the White Horse Inn, Woodbridge, on 20th insUnt:— ROBEBT KEEN, 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, no whiskers, slovenly appearance ; dressed in a dark cloth monkey jacket, light cord trousers, mixed cloth ( pepper and salt) vest,' with sleeves, fancy stitched up in front, round each button and button- hole, old black soft felt hat, and old boots. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. freeman, Woodbridge, Suffolk.— Bow- st., February 21. Absconded from Boston on 23rd instant, charged on warrant with stealing £ 14 2s. 5d. in Gold and Silver :—- JAMES RICHARD TURNER, a grocer's assistant, 17 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, slender figure, dark complexion hair and eyes, prominent nose and stoops; dressed in black worsted cord jacket, grey tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, and carries a lady's watch with ' Mrs. Turner' scratched inside. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 24. Stolen on 17th instant., at Frith Bank :— A silver Geneva Watch, steel hands, seconds hand, several small dints on out- side case, and no glass in, a brass- coloured Chain of two patterns was attached, one portion was snake- pattern. By HENRY MACK FALL, a labourer, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stoutish build, sandy hair and whiskers, freckled face ; dressed in a drab cotton jacket, striped fu3tian trousers, no vest, white calico shirt, red and black plaid scarf, soft felt hat, strong lace boots ; he also had a long blue smock, thickly pleated about the bosom, with several white buttons, and a rough drab cloth top coat ( fear- naught); much worn. He belongs to Stixwould, Lincolnshire. Warrant issued. Information to Mr. Supt. Sowden, Spilsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 24. Wanted for theft, forgery, and uttering:— DAYID BLAKLEY, a native of Stranraer, 26 or 27 years of age, 54feet 2 or 3 inches high, slender make, smart appearance, thin red face, black hair, small black whiskers high up on cheeks, black moustache, dark eyes, thin aquiline nose, old sears or marks on nose and cheek bone ; dressed, when he left in September last, in brown coat, dark grey tweed trousers and vest, cap, and carried a dark grey overcoat. He is much addicted to drink, has travelled the country with a mesmerist named Morgan, and was last heard of in Lanchester, Durham, in December. Stolen from the Temperance Hotel at Barton- cn- Humber, on 3l8t ultimo:— a small- sized lady's silver Geneva Watch, No. 41298, v hite dial, steel hands, case chased, attached a silver Guard, snake pattern, the bar has been taken off, has a ring instead, a gold plated Key, with coloured glass in centre. By a man who lodged in the house on the night of the 31st ultimo :— he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, brown hair, sar. dy whiskers, shaves partly under the chin, florid complexion, medium build ; dressed in dark brown top- coat, dirty grey suit, black hard felt hat, grey wo(, ll » n muffler, new light lace boots, soles sprigged ; he belongs to the bqokmaking fraternity from Manchester, and was at Brigg Coursing Meeting on the 31st ultimo. Information to Inspector Ward, Barton- on- Humber, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 22. Stolen on 20th instant, from a jeweller's shop in Brighton :— a half- hoop gold Bracelet, set with pearls and diamonds. By a man who went into the shop on pretence of Mashing 4 ring, and purchased a watch key : - The is about 21 y- catrs of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, smooth pale face,- piercing sharp eyes ; dressed in a long brown overcoat, boots with brown cloth tops, aud round- crowned hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Terry, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 22. Absconded from Wakefield, on 16th inst. :— WILLIAM KNOWLE3, a painter aud paperhanger, swd a collect or of assessed taxes, charged on warrant with embezzling the sum of £ 286 4s. 2d., consisting of one £ 50 Bank of England Note, No. 55/ I 89642, one ditto for £ 20, No. 42/ E 98802, the remainder in Notes and Gold :— he is 51 years of age, 5 feet 6 iaches high, blue eyes, brown hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, all turning grey, rather bald, sallow complexion, sunken cheeks, lost several teeth, lower jaw protrudes a little, rather bow legged, turns his toes in, walks with a shuffling gait, .". nd a native of York, his sinter resides iu that city ; dressed when last seen in a black cloth suit, black overcoat, black billycock hat, black scarf, with pin, imitation of a horse shoe and whip, and lace- up boots'; wore a gold Albert and silver watch, with his name engraved. ou the outer case, and a gold liu>: er ring, with bloodstone. Wanted on a warrant, charged with larceny as bailee aud embezzlement : — • JIARLES W. ATKINSON, late of Museum- btr.- et, London, and well known to travelling drapers in the Scotch trade at Birmingham, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, walks upright, £ tiort quick step, fresh complexion, slight colour, light brjwu hair, small whiskers at side, hea^ y sandy moustache, full eyes, thin sharp featmes and nose; dressed in short brown check loose walking j icktt and vest, daik grey tight- fitting trousers, small leet, side- spring boots, blue necktie, and brown Wt hat. Stolen from Chester, on 15th instant :— i Timepiece, ( recovered); two woollen Singlets, marked in front'Egar, R. H.' ; a black and white plaid flannel Shirt, right elbow worn through ; three pairs of flannel Drawers ; a pair of low sided shoes, newly soled and heeled ; five silk Pockethand- kerchiefs, four white and one figured cream colour ; two Razors, with white handles, marked ' No. 2' on back of each blade, handle of one slightly cracked; a mahogany razor Case, lined with red velvet, lid lined with white satin. By JAMES HORK, 24 years of age, 5 feet 9| inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, no whiskers, mous- tache cut short or may be shaved off, stout build; dressed in coat, dark tweed trousers, with ' stripes, vest of same material, and hard felt hat ; a painter by trade, and states that he has Worked for a Mr. Payne, painter, Marylebone, is supposed to have friends at Macclesfield and Birkenhead ; he was in company with JAMES DALEY, alias WILLIAM INDERSON, bricksetter, a native of London, 22 years of age, 5 feet 81 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, cut mark over left eye ; dressed in a drab coloured coat, black ribbed vest, moleskin trousers, long rough blue overcoat, cap with button on top, and elastic side boots; states that be has worked for th- i Great Eastern Railway Company at Shoredt'ch; the latter is now in custody aod remanded to Chester Castle € 11 24th instant. Information to Detective Inspector Dowces, County Constabulary Office, Bishopfields, Chester, who holds a warrant against Hork. — Bow- street, February 22. £ 1 reward.
