POLICE CONTAINING The guidance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Z'lieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particidar which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6712 FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1882. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the peraons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or othei- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Wanted on a charge of Murder :— JOHN ROSS, alias CUNNINGHAM, alias LOFIHOUSE, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, fresh complexion, prominent forehead, dark eyebrows, sunken eyes, slight moustache, mole on left shoulder, aud squints; is a hawker, born at Leeds, but of Irish descent; dressed iu a pair of dark cord ticusei's, bell bottoms, slightly frayed, shabby black coat and vest, Turkey red plaid scarf, dirty shirt,| old shoes, rough bully cap with kuob at top ; has aunts, who go by the name of Ross, residing near Chain Street, White Abbey, Bradford ; has beeu several times convicted of felony and o'her offences, and is supposed to be well kaowu to the police at Bradford and the West Riding generally. ROBBERY1 AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. - Stolen from the person on 27 th ultimo:— a gent's gold lever Watcfi, gold dial, black figures, No. 1059. Information to Chief Constable Campbell, Hull, Yorkshire.— Brno- street, January 2. — .. Stolen between 3 and 4 p. m. on 29th ultimo, at Wau- iiurst :— two Handkerchiefe, one red with white spots, the other blue and white silk; about 4 yards of fine dark plaid Cloth ; a brown leather Purse, with white stripe?, containing three Half Sovereigns, and 3s. in Silver. By a man who called at the cottage, threw pepper in the face of the inmate, tied her hands and feet, and thieatened to kill her if she called for assistance, he was afterwarcs traced in the direction of Tunbridge Wells :— he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate figure, gentlemanly appearance; dressed in dark suit, hard felt hat, and light boots. Stolen from the person on night of 26th instant:- an English silver lever Watch, No. 41,258, maker's name ' John Livesey, Preston,' on dial, been iu wear about two years, had attached a common plated albert Guard. A small chisel with name ' T. Spickett' stamped in two places on haudle, was left in the housfi by the burglars. Information to Mr. Supt. Hedger, County Police Station, Abingdon, Berks.— Bow- street, Dec. 28. A cottage at Charlcombe was entered on the night of 26th instant, and stolen therein :— a man's black Witney cloth Overcoat; a do. pair of lace- up Boots, tips on heels, no nails ; a pair carpet Slippers; a light blue woollen Wrap ; a white Counterpane, old ; several pairs of Sheets ; and some Pillow- cases, marked ' F. C.' in ink. Information to Mr. Supt. Morgan, Weston, near Bath, Somerset.— Bow- street, December 28. On 21st instant, between 8 and 9 p. m., the mansion of the Lord Essex was entered, and stolen tlierei l :— a gold repeater Watch, No. 3349, makers name Dwerryhouse and Bell, white face and a second hand ; a long gold Chain ; a gold pen Cass with bloodstone, engraved with a mitre at the end, contained a Pencil as well as a Pen, and when closed would be about 2 ins. long, had small ring attached ; enamel Watch, Chaiu and Locket ; a large gold Locket, set with pearls and diamonds ; a gold Bracelet, set with pearls and diamonds ; enamel Pendant, set iu diamonds ; ruby and diamond Brooch ; gold Bracelet set with onyx ; a broad gold Chain ; a Necklace of small pearls, fastened by ordinary gold clasp. Stolen from a look up shop at Fleetwood, between 8 p. m. the 23rd and 8.30 a. m. 24thinst: — a black japan tin Cash- box with gilt rim ( Ohubhs' patent) about 10 inches loug, 6 inches wide and 5 inches deep, containing about £ 6 in Silver ; a Bank- book End a Cheqne- 1- uok on the Lancaster Band, and other Papers ; a black tin B > x, about 6 inches long, 4 inches wide aud 2 inches deep, containing duplicate Cheques, Ibferring to nales of articles from the shop ; a man's yellow oilskin Jacket, collar lined witli green flannel, has 5 large white bona buttons on each side, the price mark 6/ 6 written with ink inside skirt. Eutrauce effected by breaking a square of glass iu the back window ; a quantity of blood was left on the wii ( low framo. In custody at Gloucester, and remanded till 9th instant, charged with stealing a Horse and Trap ( since rewvered) :— JAMES SMITH, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair turning grey, blue eyes, sallow complexion, light brown moustache, and small light brown whiskers each side of face, has a large aud a small pit on left shoulder blade, which appears to have been caused by abscesses, stout build, fat pulpy face, and his lost two teeth from left upper jaw ; dressed iu bUck r ibbed coat and vest, black and grey plaid trousers, fashionable brown bowler tj. it. and Oxford shoes. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester.— Bow- slreet, January 6. Foutd straying on the highway at Compton, about 20th November last, and supposed stolen :— a 2- year old red Irish heifer, star on forehead, white ou rump, hind feet, tip of tail, aud under belly. Supposed stolen from a field at Leominster, during the night of 1st instant:— a black 3- year old cart Mare, about 15 hands high, star on forehead, white fetlocks, iu good condition, had been worked a little. STEPHEN CURTIS IIARVEY, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 imlies high, dark hair, eyes inclined to be weak, Wellington nose, twisted at ei d, walks upijght; dressed in long ulster coat, lightish colour, aud deerstalker hat, bankers clerk. Stolen on 31st ultimo, from vhe front hall at 1, Verulam- place, Hastings :— a black diagonal cloth Overcoat ( recovered). Also stolen nu 2ud inst- int from a coffee room at 19, London- road, St. Leonards, a brown mixture cloth dress Coat, pockets on hips and one inside left breast, black bone buttons. And the 3rd, from a stab'e at St. Leonard's, a black cloth Oxford mixture Coat, black buttons, pockets on hips with flaps, and one inside left breast. By a man about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, no whiskers ; supposed dre^ s; d in the stolen coats, light trousers worn at, the bottoms, black hard felt hat, and old boots, likely to be fonud sleeping in some bam or outhouse. January Description of WILLIAM FITCHETT, a convict on ' license, wanted at Alfreton on warrant, charged with larceny from the person '— 53 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, oval face, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, cut scar on top of head, scar on right eyebrow and on left cheek-, a labourer at- threshing machines or farm work ; wore his beard and moustache cut short. Has frieuds at Weston- on- Trent, where he is well known ; dressed, when he absconded, in dark jacket and soft billy hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Coope, Alfieton, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, January 4. Stolen from the Officer's Quarters, Chatham Barracks, on: 31st ultimo:— a blue serge Coat and Vest: a pair of grey cloth Trousers, with stripes down side ; two pairs of elastic- side Boots ; two Overcoats, one a brown cloth, the other a blue cloth, trimmed with deep lace ; and a brown leather Bag, marked ' L. L.' By two privates of the 45th Regiment, who have deserted :— first, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, native of Middlesex ; second, 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, brown eyes, face much freckled, native of Saint Michael's, near Coventry ; supposed wearing the stolen clothes. Stolen from a coach bouse at Abbey Dore, on 31st ult. :— a blue & a white Handkerchief white spotsin them; ared bordered Handkerchief, white ground with red diamonds in centre, all containing Bread and Cheese; 2 square i- lb. mustaid Tins ; 2 round i- lb. coffee Tins. Supposed by two tramps, one 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slender build, light hair, cut short, small light whiskers and moustache, lias the mark of a ring on second finger of right hand ; dressed in a black soft hat. light short jacket, blue waistcoat, light trousers patched with black cloth on both knees, old boots cut down the fronts; the other 19 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark swarthy complexion," downcast look, slender build, dark hair, small dark side whiskers, ink mark on ba^ k of one hand and supposed, bracelet on wrist ; dressed in soft hat, daik velvet jacket with large inside pockets, blue Guernsey, cord trousers, and strong boots,— carried a tea- kettle with him These men stated that they were going to either London or Liverpool. Description of JAMES McPHERSON DICK, wanted at Birmingham on warrant, charged with stealing a Sealskin Jacket, 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 iuches high, fair complexion, very slight light side whiskers and moustache, smart appear- ance and address, a merchant's clerk, native of Ayr, Scotland, and has numerous frieuds in that locality ; dressed in dark suit and light overcoat. Information to Mr. Supt. Robinson, Detective Office, Birmingham.— Bow- st., Jan. 2. Wanted on warrant at Lewes, charged with stealing on 13th ultimo, seven Hares and three Rabbits, part recovered : — HENRY GILLMAN, 28 years of age, 5 feet 11 ins. high, fresh round face, dark brown hair, cut short, clean shaved, stout build, broad shoulders, late of Brighton, labourer; dressed in dark monkey jacket, light cord trousers. Also wanted on warrant at Lfwes, for stealing three tame Rabbits, on 21st instant :— LUTHER WREN, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, sandy whiskers and moustache, labourer ; dressed in light tweed coat, and worsted cord trousers. Information to Mr. Supt. Osbon, Lewes, East Sussex— Bow street, January 2. Descripton of THOMAS IRWIN, late brewed traveller charged with embezzlement, who absconded on 7th Oct. :— 30 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, proportinate build, [ sallow complexion, broad shoulders, dark brown hair and whiskers, the latter cut very short, grey eyes, rather pimpled face; supposed to be wearing a dark green Bait and black felt hat; native of Kendal ; has left his wife and child here ; has been in the army, and was a member of the Kendal Ritie Volunteers ; fond'_ of drink and chewing tobacco has a brother in Australia. Wanted for robbing her lodging, at Wokingham, on 28th instant, of 3 white calico Chemises ( one unbleached) 1 pair white calico Drawers ( crochet work on bottom), 1 white calico Body, 1 pair black Stays, yellow work on them, black far hat, red and black ribbon, blaok alpaca Dress, black satin Shawl:— a woman, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slender made, brown hair, fresh complexion, thin face ; dressed in bl< vck cherry- ripe hat, trimmed with dark plum- coloured ribbon, two white lace rosettes in front, black coburg jacket, seaweed fringe and lace, the stolen dress, white neckercnief, side- spring boots, patch on side. Stolen from a Temperance Hotel, Runcorn, on 27th inst.: •— a gold Albert Guard, curb pattern, 15 carat, and a Pen- dant, 18 carat, with a blond stone ; 2 gold chased Studs, an aluminum gold Ring with large stone and forget- me- not flowers; a gold breast Pin, head in shape of lover's knot, in a case ; a pair of black cloth cord trousers, very large size ; by a man who lodged in the house for one night, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, brown hair, small moustache ; dressed in blue pilot cloth suit and blue cloth cap, and had the appearance of a sailor. Stolen from a dwellipghouse at Standish. between 10 a. m. and 5 p. m. 26th instant:— a silver lever Watch, No. 1,2 » 7, makers name ' Thomas Milner, Wigan,'' and has the name ' John Bladburn' engraved inside the back case, silver dial, and second hands, black hour and minute hands, had attached a gold albert Guard, of curb pattern, Supposed by a navvy who lodged in the house, he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet < j inches high, dark complexion, black whiskers down sides of face, and under his chin ; dressed in an old blue pilot coat, and vest, moleskin trousers, lace- up boots, and soft billycock hat, his right wrist has been recently scalded, and he has an old handkerchief tied round it.
