Tht substance of all Information* received in easet of Felony and of Misdemeanors of cm aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputft Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. Tht Names of Persons charged with Offences who are ltnown but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Tic Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as passible, of Propter that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Ilerses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It ii requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Namt is given, it is indispensably necessary that « n information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all I> tter8 addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters frora the Militin, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards mnst state clearly:—( 1) The Amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. Tkey should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tiae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " Tht Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, Stc., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 2 a. m. 5th instant, the house of R. Lee Bevan, Esq., Brixworth, Northamptonshire, was entered, the shutters being bored with a centre bit, the room- door was forced opeu with a jemmy. On the same morning, the house of the Rev. Howard Vyse, of Boughton, near Brixworth, was broken into by forcing open a window with a jemmy :— four silver tea Spoons ; a pair of sugar Tongs, all marked ' G. S. H. V.' iu old English capital letters; a silver sugar Sifter; and about .£ 60 in Money were stoleu therein. About 4' 45 the same morning, Police Constable Chapman met a man near the- last- mentioned house :— the man presented a revolver and fired, the shot striking the policeman iu the arm, the man got away ; during the scuffle the policeman and the man both fell on the ground, and the latter must have had his outer coat covered with mud ; a pair of goloshes were found in the field where the struggle took place, corres- ponding with goloshe marks found iu the soil near to where both burglaries were committed :— the man in about 35 yens of age, 5 feet 8 iuches high, rather stout build, dark beard on chin, and moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, and hwd felt hat. £ 50 reward will be. given to any person who shn. ll give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender, by Mr. Supt. Williamson, County Police Station, Angel- lane, Northampton.— Hmn- stnet, Dec 7. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Remanded at Cerne Abbas, until 9th instant, charged with arsou :— JAMES PRICE, a tramp, no home, 36 years of age, 4 feet 11 iuches high, fresh complexion, dark blown hair and beard, grey eyes, smalt mole ou right should,' r ; dressed in long dirty brown slop, moleskin trousers, red neckerchief, black donkey hat, lace- up boots. States he was born at Swindon, and was working a short time last winter at Painswick, near Stroud. Information ' o Mr. Supt. Pitfield, Cerne Abbas, Dorsetshire.— Bow- street, December 7. Some person, about 6 p. m. on 2nd instant, maliciously set fire to a stack of Straw OR the premises of Mr. George Cottle, of West Felton, who will give £ 5 reward to such person who will give information as shall lead to the convic- tion of the offender. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, December 5. FORGERY. Absconded in February last, charged on a warrant with embezzlement and forgery:— WILLIAM RITCHE STEVEN, late of No. 12, Queen Victoria- street, City, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, meduim build, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, dresses well, usually wears turned down collar and high hat. Well known iu Edinburgh and Glasgow. In- formation to Inspector McWilliam, Dectective Department, City of London Police, 26 Old Jewery. E, C.— Bow- stre'. t, Dec. 7. Wanted under warrant for forging and uttering a cheque for £ 300, on 31st October last, a clerk, 26 years of age, 5 ft. 5 inches high, slender build, very sallow complexion, black hair and eyes, long thin moustache, small black side whiskers, very bad teeth; respectably dressed ; smart aud quick movements, and speaks in ail undertone. He absconded on 30th ultimo. £ 20 reward will be paid by his late employers for such information as will lead to his apprehension. Infor- mation to the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- itreet, Deetmber 7. Wanted on a charge of forging a Cheque and obtaining £ 79 10s. at Dale and Young's Bank, Jarrow, on 25th ultimo, 1881, and absconded on 26th, about 12 a. m. from Gateshead : — ALEXANDER FISHER, 40 years of age, 6 ft. 1 or 2 ins. high, walks very erect, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, large whiskers and moustache; may have shaved off beard, proportionate figure, residence— Jarrow, a bricklayer, married, a native of Perth, Scctland, but has been many years in England ; dressed iu grey clothes, may have obtained new clothing. He was forman for John Smith, builder and contractor ; has worked at many places in the counties of Durham. Northumberlnd, Cumberland, York, London, Liverpool, Hull, and several large town3 in England and Scotland. He has been in America, and spoke of going back. £ 5 reward will be paid for apprehension. Information to Mr. Supt. Harrison, Jarrow- on- Tyne.— Bow- street, Dec. 5. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Further information respecting the highway robbery near Evesham, on 12th ultimo, and advertised in Police Gazette of 16th ultimo :— The shortest and oldest man des- cribed has been apprehended, and stands remanded till 12th instant, he is a labourer, and states that he is a native of Sileby, Leicestershire, and that he left that place last spring to seek employment. The other man is still at large. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Kemp, Pershore, or to Sergeaut Gander- ton, Evesham, Worcestershire.— Bow- st., December 9. Stolen from the person, near the Railway Station, Tops ham, Devon, on 6th instant, at 7 p. m. :— a lady's gold English lever Watch, with gold dial, open face, No. 13,044 ; a leather Purse, with clasp, and a railway season Ticket, from Topsham to Exeter. By a lad who pretends to talk foreign languages, likely to stop at a public- house, had abrown'paper parcel with him, 17 to 19 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, medium build, black hair, very short, no whiskers or moustache, fair com- plexion, white front, upright collar, black tie, supposed no shirt, dark cloth coat, rather large for him, one button missing behind, the other loose, light grey vest, dark grey trousers, all much worn, black round pale hat, and elastic- side boots. In- formation to the Deputy Chief Constable of Jevon, Con- ttabuiary Barrack, Exeter.— Bow- street, December 9. Stolen from the person, at Cholstrey, near Leominster, between 3 and 6 a. m. 5th instant :— a Bundle, containing working Clothes, which were tied up in a blue and white plaid Handkerchief, a dark cloth Jacket, cotton cord trousers and Vest, brown bowler Hat, a pair of strong lace- up Boots, a black and white check Shirt, 2 white cotton Shirts, a flannel Shirt, a pair blue knitted worsted Socks, marked ' C. R.' with blue cotton. Information to Head Constable Johnson, Leominster.— Bow- street, Deceviber 7. Description of MICHAEL O'DONNELL, of Longton, charged with highway robbery with violence, at Longton, on 26th ultimo, aud stealing from the person an English silver patent lever Watch, silver dial, gold figures, maker J. H. Jackson, Tunstall, No. 15596 :— about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iuches high, medium build, fresh complexion, light hair, aud slight light moustache, a collier by trade ; dressed in daik worsted cap, black cloth shooting jacket, black cloth vest, moleskin trousers, whitw muffler aud clogs, all much worn and dirty ; smart appearance, has served in the army and been discharged for bad conduct. Information to Mr. Supt. McWilliams, Police Station, Longtou, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehensiun. — Bow - street, December 7. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of 5th inst :— a gold lever Watch, open face, crystal glass, No. 12723, aod the following inscription engraved on the back ' presented to Henry Morrish by C. H. Pryor and Thomas Hine, for the trouble, as trustee, for the late Mrs. Wood ; . a silver lever Watch ; and a small metal Watch. Information to C. B. Wilkinson, Chief of Police, Bath.— Bow- street, December 9. Further informotion respecting Edward Wall, advertised in Police Gazette of 2nd August last, wanted for burglary at Pollerdine, 1st February last. See for description iu Police Gazette of 14th February last. He passed through Much Wenlock at 9 a. m., 7th instant, in the direction of Build was. Dressed in " black soft jim crow hat, brown drabbet slop, very dark cotton card trousers, black leather leggings up to his knees, with straps and buckles attached, and strong boots. His whiskers all recently shaved off except a little on cheek- bones. Police Office are particularly requested to make inquiries at farm- houses aud search outbuildings, where probably Wall will be found sleeping. Information to Mr. Supt. Edwards, 49, Queen- street, Castle- fields, Shrewsbury, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, Dec. 9. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 6.30 p. m. aud 10.30 p. m. on 4tli instant, at Seacombe :— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, small size, gold dial, blue enamelled, circle at back of outer case, and t.'-. e word ' superior' engraved on the inside of inner case in large letters, the glass is slightly cracked. Also a plain gold wedding Ring, which has been roughly cut through in a slanting direction to take it off the finger. Information to Chief Supt. Egerton, County Hall, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, December 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING) Supposed stolen between 1st and 3rd instant, from afield at Brockley :— two Horses, one an iron grey cart gelding, rising 5 years, 16 hands high, no hind shoes; the other a red roan mare cob, aged, 13J hands high, short mane and tail, lame j. ear fore leg, no hind shoes, both in good condition. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, December 9. JOHN THOMPSON, described in Police Gazette of 6th May last, wanted for stealing a Horse and Cart ( recovered), has been apprehended and stands remanded at Maidenhead till 11 a m. on 19th instant. Supposed to have been previ- ously convicted at or near Towcester, Northamptonshire.— Bow- ttreet, Decenibcr 9. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Wanted on warrant, at North Ormesby, for larceny, on 6th instant:— FRANK JONES, from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, high forehead, dark brown hair, very curly, no whiskers, slight moustache, slender figure ; dressed in an old dark blue monkey cloth jacket, old dirty white slop underneath, black worsted cloth vest, smooth black buttons, bound with black braid, old dirty dark cloth trousers, old grey plaid shirt, blue flannel under- neath, old lace- up boots, aud low- crowned hard felt hat. Stated he' was born at Rrynmaur, Monmouths'hire, came from Rhymrey to South Bank. Information to Mr. Supt. Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Inspector Silver- sides, North Ormesby.— Bow- street, December 9. Absconded on 30th ultimo, charged on warrant with stealing a quantity of Rope ( recovered), from yachts in the River Itchen, Southampton, during past two weeks :— WILLIAM BICKNELL, a labourer, 23 years of age, 5 ft. 9 inches high, grey eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, wear- ing long blue overcoat ( old), white jumper beneath, fustian trousers, heavy boots, and black Alpine hat. FRANK SAIT, a labourer, 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 ins. high, blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, wearing a long white jumper with pockets on hips, fustian trousers, heavy boots, and round black hard felt hat. Both these men are natives of Southampton, and were seen at Jarrow Sports, Durham, ou 2nd instaut. Information to Head Constable Breary, Southampton.— Bow- street, Dec. 9. Description of JOHN MARSDEN, who absconded from. Wakefield ou 29th ultimo, charged on warrant with stealing a Swiss pivoting Tool; a pair of Swiss watchmaker's Turns ; a 3mall box of watchmakei's materials, Jewel Holes, & c. ; a large sized silver lever Watch, crystal glass, No. 4474, not recovered ; and two Watches, recovered :— he is a tramping watchmaker, 50 to 55 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, grey whiskers and beard, ginger hair, nearly grey, smart active appearance, walks erect, frequents low beerhcuses ; dressed in a grey slack back jacket, mixture trousers and vest, and hard felt hat. Charged on warrant with embezzlement:— JOHN JAMES SMITH, a draper's assistant, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, brown hair, fresh complexion, small wart on top of left eyelid, shoft dark side whiskers and moustache, ordiiary build, walks erect, is of smart appearance, and good address; geuerally dressed in dark coat and vest, mixture trousers, and hard felt hat ; he formerly resided at Stockport. Information to Chief ( Nonstable Clarkson, Borough Police Station, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 9. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Newton, between 9.30, a. m. aud 10 a. m. 5th instaut:— a black ribbed cloth Overcoat, small sizi, 2 pockets outside, and ticket pocket, 4 buttons down fi out, bottom button off, lined with black calico, which is torn under each arm ; a grey aud black union shirt, hand made, brass buttons, liued with twilled calico ; an old dark greeu merino skirt, with one flounce round the bottom, mended with a piece of black calico iu front. By a youth, about 16 or 17 years of age, 4 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout build, very fresh complexion, dark auburn hair ; dressed iu a short black jacket, cord trousers and clogs, and hard billycock hat. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- sireet, December 9. Charged with stealing £ 1 0s. 9d. by bailee :— JOHN DAWSON, 24 years of age. 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh com- plexion, sandy hair and whiskers round chin, very short, pro- portionate build ; dressed in small cloth cap with peak, old black cloth jacket with pockets on the hips, corduroy vest and trousers, red se » m down sides, and watertight clogs. Said he bslonged to Ankerslaue, Manchester, ai d may seek for work at or about the Cyrnwy Waterworks. Information to Mr. Supt. Adams, D. C. C., Mold, or Sergeant Ward, Flint, North Wales, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 9. Absconded from Lincoln, on 28lh ultimo charged with stealing a large quantity of Copper and Tin, in ingots, and I 2 POLICE GAZETTE. December 5 other property, recovered :— a man and woman— the man about 35 years of age, 5 feet ( i or 7 inchca high, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair, wore a large brown moustache when he absconded, and whiskers shaved off; dressed in hard round hat, and long blue rough Ulster, and a baker. rlhe woman, 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, thin features, pale sallow complexion, brown hair worn with fringe, curled in front; dresse'd either in white hat with light- coloured trimming, or a rough felt hat turned up on one side, black jacket trimmed with fringe, dark dress, and dark brown Ulster. They have a male child about 10 months old with them, dressed in blue. Information to Chief Constable Mansell, Lincoln.— Low- street, December 7, Description of RODERICK CAMERON, charged on warrant with larceny as bailee of a Sewing Machine :— he absconded from West Hartlepool, ou 12th April, 1880, after he had sold the sewing machine ; will be found at common lodging- houses or low beer- houses, served in the 72nd High- landers during the Crimean War, in 1855, also in the Indian Mutiny. 1858, was also a sergeant on the staff of the Leitrim Militia, has no pension :— about 52 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, turning giey, thin brown whiskers aud moustache, turning grey, shaves ou chin, rather slender figure; residence, late West Hartlepool, where his wife, 4 sons, and 2 daughters now reside, and keep a common lodging house; a tailor, married, native of Inverness; dressed in old brown shooting coat, old grey cloth vest and trousers, black hard felt hat, and old elastic- side boots. Worked at his trade, in Manchester, about 3 years ago. Supposed to be now living with another woman. Is very much addicted to drink. Information to Mr. Supt. Scott, County Police Station, West Hartlepool, Durham.— Bow- street, December 7. Charged on warrant with stealiLg on the night of 21st instant, at Farningham, Kent :— nine Ducks ( recovered)— GEORGE AMBROSE, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and bair, little or no whiskers, pitted • with small pox ; dressed iu long grey coat, black cap, and lace- up boots ; is a collector of ferns, & c., aud visits the London Markets. ' Charged on warrant with embezzlement :— FREDERICK. BATH, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fresh complexion, small sharp features, dark brown hair, and small whiskers at sides of face; dressed in long light overcoat, light grey trousers, hard black felt hat, and cloth top boots ; has been employed as a butcher's groom. Information to Mr. Supt. Webster, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- street, December 7. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) Wanted for felony :— a Man. about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, whiskers and moustache ; dressed iu [ dark clotb coat, black billycock hat, wears a red and while woollen scarf. Infor- mation to the County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester. — Bow- street, December 9. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Charged with indecent assault near Cribden Farm, on the rood between Crawshaw Booth and Haslingden, between 3 and 4 p. m. 7th instant :— a man, about 30 years of age, rather tall, very pale complexion, a little light moustache, a very little hair on chin, and cut short back of head ; dressed in a dark cap, fitting close to the head, brown fustian coat, - with pockets at sides, supposed cord trousers, and clogs. Had the appearance of a collier or labourer, aud can be identified. Information to County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 9. Obtained by fraud, since 2Sth ultimo :— 5 pieces of black Satin, one length 441 yaids, No. 8739 ; another 45 yards, No. 5438 ; another 44J yards. No. 1163; another 45 yards' No. 3926 ; the other 45 yards, No. 6739. Five pieces of coloured Satin, one 455 yards, No. 7124; auother 55 yards, No. 9170; auother 51" yards, No. 4232; another 55- yards. No. 9173; the other 66= yards, No. 5987 ; each piece wrapped in browxi paper, with length of piece aud number marked thereon. By ROBERT FIGG, late of No. 8 Newington- crescent, Newington- butts, London, 36 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, stout build, dark mous- tache, no whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, high black hat; a commercial- traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of Loudon Police, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. - Bow. vt. reet, December 9. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Committed to H. M. Prison, at Norwich, for one calendar month hard labour, for vagrancy, on 5th instaut :— CHAS. JONES, 44 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet 8 inches high, brown bair, whiskers, beard and moustache, blue eyes ( sunken), fresh complexion, rather stout build, scar upper part and inside of right thigh, a long scar inside of left thigh, just above the knee, pointing upwards, about 6 inches long, a boil scar ( fresh) on hamstring of right leg ; dressed iu brown cloth coat, large soft chummy hat, striped cloth trousers, and laee boots. States he is a native of Glasgow, and has been to sea- fishing. Information to Mr, Supt. Munford, Swaffham, Norfolk.— Bow street, December 9. Description of EMILY BERKELY, alias ELIZA HARRISON, remanded until 14- ti instant, on a charge of stealing from shop doors :— 42 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, hazel eyes, lresh complexion, black hair, several scars on face and forehead, native of Islington, London, a tiawker of shell fish; states that her husband Mark Berkeley travels about the country with performing dogs, but that she left him about 12 months ago, aud resioed last winter at Smith's lodging- house, North- street, Hull, aud also resided a short time at Mrs. Mildall's, Golden- alley, Sunderland, that she has been sent from Stockton- on- Tees, for 1 month, for larceny, also tor 2 months from South Shields, for larceny. Informa- tion. to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough.— Bov>- street, December 9. Further information respecting THOMAS LEE, the tramping French polisher, advertised in Police Gazette of 18tli ultimo :— he is supposed to be in Nottinghamshire, or one of the adjoining counties, and may give the name of Hargreaves. Information to Mr. Supt. Burrows, March, Cam to, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, Dec. 9 Description of FRED ULYATT, who stands committed for trial at Bourn Sessions, ou 3rd January next, on a charge of cattle stealing :— 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, medium build, light brown hair, small light moustache, no whiskers, large nose, long face, tfather sallow complexion, by trade a blacksmith, said to be a native of Mansfield, Notts ; dressed in a black diagonal cloth coat and vest, dark cloth cord trousers, hard felt bat, with tip of a peacock's feather in band, and a long brown cloth top- coat ; was convicted for stealing a horse, at Bakewell, Derbyshire, 12 months ago. Information to Mr. Supt. Richdale, Sleaford, Linci. lnshiie, who will forward photo on application.— Bow- street, Dec. 9. Found drowned on 1st instant, in a pit at Ipsley :— the Body of a man unknown, about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches long, slender build, dark eyes, | hair, whiskers and moustache, rather broad face, has a hole in the lower part of right jaw, as if from cancel or tumour ; dressed in dark mix- ture suit, with white slop over his vest, dark cloth overcoat, aud light made lace up boots. In his pocket was found a dark leather purse with brass clasp, containing 10£ d., an Indian- rubber tobacco pouch, an old German silver Watch, No. 39G6, maker's name ' Otto Van Meur, Amsterdam,' and a piece of paper, on which was written the words ' Charles Kemp.' An inquest was held on 6th instant, and a verdict of ' Found Drowned' was returned. Information to Mr. Supt. Simmons, Alcester, near Reddich, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, December 9. Description of GEORGE HERBERT DAVIES, alias FREDERICK WILLIAM DAVIES, committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions to be holden at the Castle, Exeter, on 4th proximo, for stealing from a till, in the ' Builders' Arms,' East Stonehouse, the sum of 3 shillings :— about 19 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, slight build, dark brown hair, fresh complexion, blue eyes ; dressed in a brown tweed suit of clothes, round bowler hat, lace boots. He exchanged a single- case small Geneva watch, with chased back, nearly new, No. 8863, which he stated he bought at Chelsea, for auother watch, at J. J. Nicholls, Paris- street, Exeter. He was convicted at Newport, Monmouthshire, on 2Stb June, 1878, for stealing money, and sentenced to 6 months hard labour; agair\ he was apprehended in London, for stealing £ il from an hotel at Cardiff, and sentenced to 6 months hard labour ; he was also apprehended for an hotel robbery at Bridgend, Glamorganshire.
