Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the Bame, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is madefor the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must, state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or aocompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding tkem. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Charged with feloniously wounding on 1st instant, at ihe C'lee Hill, Cayuhane :— THOMAS KNIGHT, alias BULLOCK, stone equarer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, small moustache, little or no • whiskers, medium build, broad face, high cheek bones ; sup- posed dressed in dark clotbes. • Had on 2nd instant, two black eyes, and face badly bruised from fighting. Has a brother a foreman in a quarry at Croft, near Hinckley, Leicestershire, has worked in quarries at Mount Sorrell, Stony Stanton, Penmearmawr, Pwllheli, Claniron, aud the Nant, also at Dalbeattie, Scotland. Information to Mr. Supt. Caswell, Church Stretton, Salop, who holds the, warrant for his arrest.— Bow- itreet, October 7 ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stclen from the person on 3rd instant, on railway platform, Burton- on- Trent:— a silver Geneva Watch, marked inside case ' Samuel Bloor,' dial cracked across the figure 10. Information to Mr. Supt. Harston, Burton- on- Trent, Stafford- shire.— Boxo- street, October 12. part worn ; and a hard black felt Hat:— a man, about 45 yrs. of age, 5 feet 8 inches nigh, dark complexion, dark brown hair and moustache, no whiskers, slender build, and thin face ; dressed in an old dark grey suit, and wearing the stolen boots and hat. Supposed to be a discharged soldier from the 101st Regiment. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, The Green, or to Inspector Chaplain, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, October 14. EDWARD WIN3BORROW, charged with House- breaking at Dulverton, and advertised in Police Gazette of 10th instant, has been apprehended and committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions.— Bow- street, October 14. Stolen by means of Housebreaking on 7th instant :— a silver lever Watch, silver dial, gold figures, supposed steel pointer, and to have ' W. D. Cotton,' or ' W. Cotton,' engraved on back, No. | 38370 ; a silver lever Watch, silver dial, gold figures, supposed steel pointers, had attached a long silver Guard, chain pattern ; also 6 Half- sovereigns. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough.— Bow- itreet, October 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Nottingham on 9th inst., by means of housebreaking :— an oval silver Sugar Basket, handle over top, filigree pattern, perforated at sidts, very old- fashioned ; a very old- fashioned Knife and Fork, silver handles shape of a horn, marked ' R. D.' on blade ; a Fruit Knife, steel blade, round silver handle, engravsd ; a tortoise- shell Snuff Box, filigree pattern, with gold lid ; and a fancy Stereoscope, ordinary size. £ o reward will be paid by the owner for such information as Bhall lead to the apprehension of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the property, or a reasonable amount in proportion to property recovered. B.'; two silver table Spoons, fiddle pattern ; two ditto, old fashioned ; four silver Forks, four grains, old- fashioned ; a pair of silver sugar Bows, filagree pattern ; a Bracelet, dead gold, set with white corals, with amethyst in centre, gold pin through centre of corals ; Braoch and Ear- rings to match ; a pair of silver Ear- rings, filagree pattern ; a child's silver Coral, bells attached, very old and worn ; a silver Bracelet, filagree pattern, cameo out in centre ; 11 doz silver plated Porks, fiddle pattern. D0 p. m. 4th instant :— a lady's gold lever Watch, open face, gold dial, ' Emma Greenway, Berkeswell,' engraved on name plate, wiA long silver Guard attached ; a gent's silver lever Watch ( English), silver dial, open face, glass cracked, with a 9- carat gold Albert Chain attached, double link pattern ; a gold Brooch, oval shaped, containing hair ; a Bilver Brooch, twisted pattern, set with pebbles ; 4 gold Rings ( lady's) 1st, set with rubies and pearls alternately,— 2nd, set with small blue stones and pearls,— 3rd, a small sized ring, set with opals,— 4th, was formerly a wedding ring, worn very thin, has had a small piece let in, containing hair ; an old- fashioned Pencil- case ; a silver Tooth- pick ; and about 24s. in Money. By two men, first, about 30 years of age, about 5 ft. inches high, dark complexion, piercing dark eyes, pock- marked, black hair, very slight dark moustache, small hands, was wearing a large silver ring ; dressed in dark coat with breast pocket, in which was seen a blue silk handkerchief, dark trousers, small black felt hat; 2nd, about 30 yrs. of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, rather full face, walked very erect; dressed in long dark coat, brown trousers, small black hard felt hat. It is supposed that both men arrived at Berkeswell by 11.8 a. m. train from Birmingham. Information to Mr. Snpt. Hannah, Longford, near Coventry.— Bow- street, October 10. Lever,, open- face; 1 gold keyless Geneva Watch; 12 silver Geneva Watches, medium size; 24 small silver Geneva Watches; about 30 second- hand Watches, all silver, one of which is very small pair case verge, silver gilt, others were levers, verges ( open- face) & hunters, also an old silver repeater, private marks inside the cases of Geneva Watches near the joint, ex/ x. sg/ x, ue/ x, uo/ x, sc/ x, and about half the Watches had crystal glasses ; 12 gold Alberts, fancy patterns, 9 carat ; silver Brooches, with names ' Ada,' ' Louise,' ' Gertie,' ' Emma,' pierced, border with spotted edges ; 7 bright gold Brooches ; 6 small silver Lockets; 1 silver Maltese Cross; 20 silver finger Rings, various patterns, buckles, plain hoops, & c. By 3 men who belong to Birmingham, one 27 to 30 years of age. rather short, proportionate build, fair complexion, little light whiskers ; dressed in a long light coloured top coat, and low crowned felt hat. Another about 30 years of age, may be a little older, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light moustache, deeply pockmarked, full face, thick neck ; dressed in long dark top coat, black muffler with white border, low crowned hat; he is of rough coarse appearance. The other about the same age, and a little taller than the second man, dark moustache; dressed in dark long top coat, low crowned hat; smart appearance ; wore diamond ring on finger, and collar high up the neck. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Shrewsbmy, Salop.— Bow- street, October 10. Description of three men suspected of breaking and entering a counting house at Heading, during the night of 6th inst, and stealing therein £ 130 :— one about 30 years of age, heavy dark moustache, whiskers shaved off, about 5 ft. 6 inches high ; respectably dressed, in supposed dk. grey suit, and round bard felt hat. Arother about 30 yrs. of age, 5 ft 6 ins. high, had little light moustache; respectably dressed in dark clothes. The other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, had a little light moustache; respec'ably dressed in dark clothes. Were all seen in Reading about 5' 30 p. m. on 6th, and left by the G. W. P. ailway mail train, about 4 a. m. cn 7' li instant. Infoi matiou to Chief Supt. Purchase, Borough'Police Station, Reading, Berjjs.— Row treet, October 10. Stolen on 7th instant by means of housebreaking at Maidstone, a pair of Trousers and Vest, ( recovered) ; a blue striped cotton Shirt; a Threepenny piece; and Sevenpenoe in coppers :— By a man from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, clean shaved, slight moustache ; dressed in brown trousers and vest, black cloth coat, and wearing a slate coloured coat over it, and hard felt hat, and had the appearance of having been in the army. Information to the Chief Constable, Police Office. King Street, Maidstone.— Bow- st„ October 10. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING, Charged with burglary, at Stafford, on 11th instant, and stealing a pair of strong ; a? « - up Boots, heavily nailed, 8 size. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Dulverton, Somerset, between 2 and 4 p. m. on 5th instant :— two Sovereigns; four Crowns; four Half Crowns; five Florins ; three Groats ; seven threepenny Pieces ; a half- pint Bottle containing Gin ; a German silver watch Chain ; and a leather Purse, with elastic band. By RICHARD WINS- BORROW, a native of Oakford, Devon, 27 yea « - sof age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, very dark brown or black hair, black moustache, full face, thick set, very erect; dressed in serge suit, black hard bowler hat; may go by the name of NED HAWKINS, was seen at Barnstaple, Devon, on the evening of 6th instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Ross, Wiveliscombe, or to Sergeant Stark, Police Station, Dulverton, Somerset, who holds the warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen at Shrewsbury, during the night of Gth inst., by means of shopbreaking:— 6 English going barrel Levers, open- HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a Meadow at Chalfont St Giles, Bucks, during the night of 1st instant:— a . light brown cart Mare, compact and well formed, between 15 and 16 hands high, rising 4 years old, in good cindition, black legs, mane and tail, and a scratch or scar on near fore leg, between knee and fetlock joint. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information, as shall lead to the recovery of the Mare, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to Chief Constable Drake, Aylesbury ; Mr. Supt. Dunham, Slough, or to Inspector Chaplin, Beaconstield, Bucks,— Bm<:- street, October 14. Supposed stolen on or about the 26th ultimo :— a valuable Scotch Colley Dog, light brown or almjst brindle, answers to the name of ' Ben,' and was wearing a leather collar. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Shepherd, Steeple Claydon, Winslow, — Bow- street, October 12. Absconded at Wilton, on 30th ultimo, charged with horse stealing :— a Eian, from 25 to 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, cut very short, little whiskers ( now probably shaved off), bad scar on upper lip, supposed to be healed now, and slight scratches on side of face ; dressed in brown ribbed jacket, rib running downwards, and raised seams, vest of the same material, light brown tweed trousers, worn through seats, watertight boots, nailed with rather small nails, bowler hat, and light handkerchief round neck : may be found it Bristol, Gloucester, or attending fairs, & c. Information to Mr. Supt. Gale, Dorchester, Dorset.^ — Bow- street, October 12. Charged with stealing a Pony and Trap from Raunds, on 8th instant, since recovered near Bedford, where he exchanged them for a dark chesnut pony, six years old, 121 hands high, thick set, rather long mane aud tail, in good condition, had on a single snafle bridle, no saddle :— SAMUEL KNIGHTON, of Raunds, groom and drover, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, small dark whiskers, dark hair cut short, bow- legged ; dressed in dark coat, grey mixture trousers, hard felt hat. He may be found in company of low horse dealers. Will try to emigrate to America, where he has a brother. He has previously been convicted of a similar offence. Information to Inspector Tarry, Police Station, Thrapston, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 12. Found straying on 28th ultimo, in the parish of Stoke Poges, Bucks, supi> osed stolen:— 1 Ewe and 12 Lambs. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- it., Octobsr 12. Stolen from the Castle Inn, Colchester, about 4 p. m. ou , _ „ - , , 17th instant:— a black Mare, 6 yrs. old, about 14 hands high, face, 3 of which are numbered 18S91, llOOo, 8711; 1 Walt ham short square cut tail, hair chafed off by collar on chest or POLICE GAZETTE. October 14 bottom of neck, a very free goer; a high dealer's Cart, painted chocolate colour, picked out with fine red lines, Email wood dash board, end of one shaft capped with iron, the other brass ; brass mounted Harness, bearing rein hook on saddle broken off, shoulder straps to collar to prevent chafing. By a returned convict, a native of Great Bentley, Essex, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 to 10 inches high, light mutton- chop whiskers ; dressed in brown short coat or jacket, light_ tight- fitting trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to Chief Constable Mercer, Colchester, Essex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 12. Found straying at Wrangle,, on 29th ultimo :— a grey yearling Filly, three white feet— fore feet and one hind foot. A dark brown foal Filly, with black legs. They are both in good condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Crawford, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, October 10. Further information respecting the black or very dark brown Cob, stolen at Seend, advertised in Police Gazette, 13th August last. Not having been thoroughly castrated, and being what is called rig, he is very restless when in the company of mares. £ 5 reward is still offered for the recovery of the Horse and conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. White, Wilts Constabulary, Trowbridge.— Bow- street, October 10. Supposed stolen during the night of 4th instant, from paddock at Langley Marish, Bucks :— a dark iron grey Bony, with black face and legs as far as knees, 5 years old, about 11 hands high, long tail, mane cut where the collar goes. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen from Liddington Warren Farm, near Swindon during the night of 4th or morning of 5th instant :- a black stout, cart Horse, about 10 years old, a little white hair above the hind hoof, a small wen on the near side of the lower part of the fore ribs, and loDg under lip. Value about 15 guineas. Information to Mr. Supt. North, Wilts Constabulary, Swin- don.— Bow- street, October 10. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen from the dwelling honse of Alfred Bull, Wrotham, Kent, on 6th instant:— a lady's small silver hunting Watch, flowers engraved at back of case ; a Bmall gold Locket, set with pearls and corals, in shape of a cross, glass broken inside ; and a black leather Purse, containing 4s. 8d. By a man who lodged in the house one night, about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair, no whiskers ; dressed as a groom, in dark grey tweed suit, hard felt hat, low shoes, walks bow legged, had a ring on little finger. Also stolen at Wrotham, Kent, during the night of 6th instant, from an open Lodge :— 8 Turkeys, about three parts grown, 7 black, and 1 light speckled. Information to Mr. Supt. Hulse, Police Court, West Mailing, Kent.— Bow- street, October 14, Absconded on 30th ultimo, charged with stealing a Bag containing £ 11 :— WILLIAM BOLAM, 23 or 24 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, proportionata build, slight dark moustache, good looking ; dressed in dark ribbed cloth suit, and low crowned hard felt hat. He has recently left the Army, is very active, and of respectable appearance. His parents and wife reside at 119, Capnongate,. Edinburgh. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Station, Newcastle- on- Tyne.— Bow- st., Oct. 14. Description of ROBERT REEVE, alias HECTOR PEEVE, charged with stealing Fowls :— he is 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, brown hair little or no whiskers, fresh complexion, slender made ; dressed in brown cap, old dark overcoat, black short coat, old mixture trousers, and light shoes, all much worn. Information to Mr. Supt. Cole, Ixworth, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, October 14. Charged at Mansfield with embezzlement : — JOHN MURRAY, native of Ireland, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, reddish brown beard and moustache, dark hair ( brovrn or black), slight build, speaks with slight Irish accent, is a draughtsman, and can survey. Stated his parents reside at Southampton, where his father was as excise officer ; dress when last seen in blue trousers, round jacket of brownish check, has a complete suit of blue ; hail a large box, very light, painted darkish colour and grained, with handles, much worn about keyhole. Is likely to seek work in Land Agent's or Surveyor's Office. Left Mansfield on October 7th, for Nottingham, box labelled for Nottingham. Information to the Supt., County Police Station, Mansfiald, Notts.— Bow- st., Oct. 12. Stolen on 5th instant, from 4, Benner- terrace, Barmouth: —% large sized black scarf Shawl, with white thread forming small squares all through, a little more white on border, and dark fringe, there are several moth's hole3 in it, and may have been mended here and there, supposed to have several herring scales on it. Supposed by a female, about 20 years of age, rather tall, light brown hair, fresh complexion; dressed in grey paisley shawl, dark straw hat, wears ear- rings, had a little boy about 12 months old. Second, a female, about 18 to 20 years of age, rather short, light hair and complexion ; dressed in black jacket, light grey frock, white straw bat, and a grey cravat around her neck. Third, a boy, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light brown hair, fresh com- plexion ; dressed in dark clothes, and felt hat. Fourth, a boy, about 14 years of age, rather short and stout, dark brown hair and complexion ; dressed in brown top- coat, and black hat. They had with them a sack, in which they carried their clothes, and a flat square Irish basket, in which they had few things for sale ; they are brotlaers and sisters, natives of Liverpool; they will probably be found hawking and singing on the street, and stopping at common lodging- houses. In- formation to Sergeant Ashton, Barmouth Police Station, Merionethshire.— Jim- street, October 12. Charged at Birmingham, on a warrant, with embezzling £ 14 19s. 6d. :— PATRICK KELLY, 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 9J or 10 inches high, dark complexion, pockpitted, slight dark . moustache, rather square shoulders, walks erect ; has been in the Army ; dressed in blue cutaway coat, black trousers, and hard black billycock. Will endeavour to emigrate. Has friends at Middlesbrough- on- Tees. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Robinson, Detective Office, Birmingham. — Bow- street, October 12. Charged with stealing a Shawl ( recovered), in company with MICHAEL WM. O'BRIEN, a tailor, now in custody : — a woman, about 50 years of age, pale complexion, slender build ; dressed in old dark skirt, small green plaid shawl over her shoulders, a red knitted Bhawl over her chest and round her waist, wore an apron, old black bonnet, and old boots cut open at front,. Information to Mr. Supt. Henderson, County Police Office, Bicup, Lancashire.— Bow- st., October 12. Description of WILLIAM HENRY BLAKE3URRY, a watchmaker, charged at Whitby with larceny as a bailee of silver verge Watch ( recovered) :— he is about 55 years of je, 5 feet 9 or 10 ioches high, fresh complexion, grey hair and whiskers, stout build, rather lame ; dressed in a long grey coat which he wears buttoned, and is very greasy and Bhabby, and black ro^ nd hard hat. Has a nephew at Scarboro', and a brother in Leeds, ironmongers. Information to Mr. Supt. Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 12. Charged with stealing £ 6 15s. at Liverpool:— ARTHUR MEW, or MAW, 18 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, brown mole side of face; dressed in grey tweed coat, brown trousers, blue plaid muffler, and billycock hat; native of Brimscombe, Gloucester. Information to Chief Supt. Williams, Liverpool. — Bow- street, October 12. Charged on warrant with larceny :— JOSEPH BUTTON, a tin hawker, 22 to 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale complexion, light hair, small light whiskers ; dressed in long sleeve waistcoat, with black and white fronts, white pearl buttons, yellow neckerchief, light cord trousers, and old sealskin cap. Supposed to be accompanied with his wife, who is about 20 years of age, very dark hair, small pimples on face.
