Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person ihould be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and s^ orn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, tegether with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and « ' Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded . on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, co the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tfae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without ihe apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, T^ ondon." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette " no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. WILLIAW OSMAM, wanted for the murder of hia wife Hannah Osman, at Bredbury, near Stockport, on the night of 19th August last, has been apprehended.— Bow- street, October 10. . • Charged - with feloniously - wounding on 1st instant, at the Clee Hill, Caynhane:— THOMAS KNIGHT, alias BULLOCK, stone squarer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, small moustache, little or no whiskers, medium build, broad face, high cheek bones ; - sup- posed dressed in dark clothes. Had On 2nd instant, two black eyes, and face badly bruised from fighting. Has a brother a foreman in a quarry at Croft, near Hinckley, Leicestershire, has worked in quarries at Mount Sorrell, Stony Stanton, Penmearmawr, Pwllheli, Claniron, and the Nant, also at Dalbeattie, Scotland. Information to Mr. Supt. Caswell, Church Stretton, Salop, who holds the warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, October 7 On 27th ultimo the Body of a newly- born female Child was found on the bank of the canal, at Rochdale, wrapped in a piece of old canvas and placed loosely in a com- mon market satchel or bag, used ordinarily for carrying vegetables. At an inquest held on 30th ultimo, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned ' against some person or persons unknown.' Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Rochdale.— E& street, October 5. ROBBERY AnD LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Wakefield, between 11.30 p. m. 1st, and 4 p. m, 2nd instant:— an American silver lever Watch, crystal glass, engine- turned cases, had attached an 18 carat lone linked Albert Guard, with a medal attached, marked ' The Yorkshire Challenge Cup Tie, presented to G. A. Beverley, half- back, 8th April, 1880.' Information to Chief Constable Clarkson, Borough Police Station, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., October 7. Stolen from the person about 4' 30 p. m. 30th ultimo, at Pomona Gardens:— a silver Geneva hunting Watch, No. 16014, ' O. T.' engraved on inner case, white dial and seconds finger, the spring on the outer case is broken. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, Ootober 7. Stolen from the person, at Burton- on- Trent on 3rd inst. : — a silver Geneva Watch, No. 4082, maker's name Henri Tonkin ; a gold hunting Watch, 18 carat cases, engine- turned, small medium size, white dial, steel hands, No. 53526, maker Maceabe, London. \ Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen in Nottingham, on 6th instant, by means of housebreaking :— six silver tea Spoons, beaded pattern; eight silver dessert Spoons, fiddle pattern ; two silver salt Spoons, marked ' R. B.'; two silver table Spoons, fiddle pattern ; two ditto, old fashioned ; four silver Forks, four grains, old- fashioned ; a pair of silver sugar Bows, filagree pattern ; a Bracelet, dead gold, set with white corals, with amethyst in centre, gold pin through centre of corals ; Brooch and Ear- rings to match ; a pair of silver Ear- rings, filagree pattern ; a child's silver Coral, bells attached, very old and worn; a silver Bracelet, filagree pattern, cameo out in centre ; 11 doz. silver plated Forks, fiddle pattern. Information to Chief Constable Poyntz, Nottingham.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen by means of housebreaking at i erkeswell, between 4.30 and 4.50 p. m. 4th instant :— a lady's gold lever Watch, open face, gold dial, ' Emma Greenway, Berkeswell,' engraved on name plate, with long silver Guard attached ; a gent's silver lever Watch ( English), silver dial, open face, glass cracked, with a 9- carat gold Albert Chain attached, double link pattern ; a gold Brooch, oval shaped, containing hair ; a silver Brooch, twisted pattern, set with pebbles ; 4 gold Rings ( lady's) 1st, set with rubies and pearls alternately,— 2nd, set with small blue stones and pearls,— 3rd, a small sized ring, set with opals,— 4th, was formerly a wedding ring, worn very thin, has had a small piece let in, containing hair ; an old- fashioned Pencil- case; a silver Tooth- pick ; and about 24s. in Money. By two men, first, about 30 years of age, about 5 ft. 4 inches high, dark complexion, piercing dark eyes, pock- marked, black hair, very alight dark moustache, small hands, was wearing a large silver ring; dressed in dark coat with breast pocket, in which was seen a blue silk handkerchief, dark trousers, small black felt hat ; 2nd, about 30 yrs. of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, rather full face, walked very erect ; dressed in long dark coat, brown trousers, small black hard felt hat. It is suppose.! that both men arrived at Berkeswell by 11.8 a. m. traiu'from Birmingham. Information to Mr. Supt. Hannah, Longford, near Coventry.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Venn Cottage, Dulverton, Somerset, between 2 and 4 p. m. on 5th instant : — two Sovereigns ; four Crowns; four Half Crowns j five Florins ; three Groats ; seven threepenny Pieces ; a half- pint Bottle containing Gin ; a German silver watch Chain ; and a leather Purse, with elastic band. By RICHARD WINS- BORROW, a native of Oakford, Devon, 27 yea's of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, very dark brown or black hair, black moustache, full face, thick set, very erect; dressed in serge suit, black hard bowler hat; may go by the name of NED HAWKINS, was seen at Barnstaple, Devon, on the evening of 5th instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Ross, Wiveliscombe, or to Sergeant Stark, Police Station, Dulverton. Somerset, who holds the warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen from a jeweller's shop at Shrewsbury, during the night of 6th instant, by means of shopbreaking with false keys :— 6 English going barrel Levers, open- face, three of which are numbered 18891, 11506, 8711 ; 1 Waltham Lever, open- face; 1 gold keyless Geneva Watch; 12 silver Geneva Watches, medium size ; 24 small silver Geneva Watches ; about 30 second- hand Watches, all silver, one of which is a very small pair case verge, silver gilt, the others were levers, verges ( open- face) and hunters, also an old silver repeater, private marks inside the cases of Geneva Watches near the joint, ex/ x, sg/ x, ue/ x, uo/ x, sc/ x, and about half the Watches had crystal glasses ; 12 gold Alberts, fancy patterns, 9 carat; 6 silver Brooches, with names ' Ada,' ' Louise,' ' Gertie,' 1 Emma,' pierced, border with spotted edges ; 7 bright gold Brooches ; 6 small silver Lockets; 1 silver Maltese Cross ; 20 silver finger Rings, various patterns, buckles, plain hoops, & c. By 3 men of the following description, who belong to Birmingham, one 27 to 30 years of pge. rather short, propor- tionate build, fair complexion, little light whiskers ; dressed in long light coloured top coat, and low crowned felt hat. Another about 30 years of age, may be a little older, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light moustache, deeply pockmarked, full face, thick neck ; dressed in long dark top coat, black muffler with white border, low crowned hat; he is of rough coarse appearance. The other about the same age, and a little taller than the second man, dark moustache; dressed in dark long top coat, low crowned hat; smart appearance ; wore diamond ring on finger, and collar high up the neck. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, October 10. Description of three men suspected of breaking and entering the counting house of Messrs. Blandy and Hawkins, Reading, during the night of 6th instant, and stealing therein .£ 130:— one about 30 years of age, heavy dark moustache, whiskers shaved off, about 5 feet 6 inches high ; respectably dressed, in supposed dark grey suit, and round hard felt hat. Another about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, had a little light moustache; respectably dressed in dark clothes. The other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, had a little light moustache ; respec'ably dressed in dark clothes. Were all seen in Reading about 5' 30 p. m. on 6th, and left by the G. W. Railway mail train, about 4 a. m. on 7th instant. Information to Chief Supt. Purchase, Borough Police Station, Reading, Berks.— Bow- street, October 10, Stolen on 7th instant by means of housebreaking at Maidstone, a pair of Trousers and Vest, ( recovered) ; a blue striped cotton Shirt; a Threepenny piece; and Sevenpence in coppers :— By a man from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, clean shaved, slight moustache ; dressed in brown ' rousers and vest, black cloth coat, and wearing a slate coloured coat over it, and hard felt hat, and had the appearance of having been in the army. Information to the Chief Constable, Police Office. King Street, Maidstone.— Bow- ot., October 10, Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 3rd instant, from the house of Mr. Isaac Hole, of Duckmanton : — 16 yards of brown or bronze coloured Cloth, double width, for ladies' dresses ; 8 yards of slate- coloured glaztd Lining, and some Eatables. During same night the house of Mr. S. R. Parker, farmer, of Temple, Normanton, was entered and part of a bottle of Whiskey, some Cigarettes, aud a few Coppers were stolen. Information to Mr. Supt. Carline, County Police Office, Chesterfield.— Bow- street, October 7. Charged with burglary, at Borden, Kent, on the night of 28th ultimo, and stealing a brown tweed Jacket and Vest, a German silver pocket Compass, and a quantity of Provisions : — 1st, a man about 5 feet 6 inches high, about 26 years of age ; dressed in hard felt hat, and short brown tweed Jacket and Vest ( stolen). 2nd, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet G inches high ; dressed in dark overcoat, pair of shooting boots, and black and wliite striped socks. 3rd, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high ; dressed in long snuff- coloured coat, and hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Mayne, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Kent.— Bow- street, October 7. Between 12 a. m. 3rd, and 6 a. m. 4th instant, a residence at New Derry, was burglariously entered, and stolen therein : —£ 7 10s. in Gold, about 10s. in Silver; 1 single breasted Scotch tweed Jacket, two pockets with flaps outside, one pocket outside left breast, one ticket pocket, and 1 pocket • side right breast, made to fit a youth ol 17 years ; 1 single brew ted Vest of ear n<. . tei- in*. pockets inside, two pocket outside, and watch pocket; 1 pair cf black and white Scotch tweed trousers, youth size, and much worn. Stolen by means of shopbreaking, at Salford :— a silver lever Watch, No. 31691, maker John Williamson, Rochdale ; 2 ditto ditto, Nos. 16201, 1109 ; 25 silver Geneva Watches— Nos. 56, 2891, 4588, 6810, 7514, 7521, 7' 653, 8460, 742W, 8732, 11291, 11712, 12599, 12G23, 13623, 18955. 21423, 23471, 23549, 24832, 31490, 35430, 49381, 55715, 71904 and 2 gold Albert Chains. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Selsby Hill, near Stroud, between 10 p. m. on 4th and 7 a. m. on 5th instant, by means of housebreaking : — a pig skin Purse, containing £ 1 10s. in Silver, the Purse marked ' J. Porter, from his wife'; 2s. worth of Coppers; an American patent lever Clock; a metal Tea- pot; a dozen white handled Knives ; a do. plated Forks ; 3 Table Spoons; 3 Dessert do.; 6 Tea do., one Silver; an old Coat and Waistcoat, dark mixture bone buttons, back of Waistcoat much stained, striped lining ; 2 large bed Sheets ; a Bmall bed Sheet, marked with red cotton ' I. M. P. ; a Table Cloth, white figure ; a dark flannel Shirt ; a grey Merino Guernsey ; a pair of female's Drawers; a pair of white Pants; 2 Chemises; 1 pair of female's Stockings; 2 pair grey Socks ; 7 white pocket Handkerchiefs; 2 baby's Night Dresses ; a flannel Petticoat; a Pillow- case ; 4 chamber Towels; 6 kitchen do. ; a Jack Towel, and several baby's Bibs. Information to Mr. Supt. Philpott, Police Station, Stroud, Gloacestershire.— Bm- street, Oc'ober 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Found straying at Wrangle,- on 29th alt," jo :— a grey yearling Filly, three white feet— fore feet and one hind foot. A dark brown foa, l Filly, with black legs. They are both in good condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Crawford, Boston, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, October 10. The dark brown Mare, advertised in Police Gazette of 3rd instant, has been recovered.— Bow- street, October 10. Further information respecting the black or very dark brown Cob, stolen at Seend, advertised in Police Gazette, 13th August last. Not having been thoroughly castrated, and being what is called rig, he i3 very restless when in the company of mares. £ i reward i3 still offered for the recovery of the Horse and conviction of the thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. White, Wilts Constabulary, Trowotidge.— Bow- s'. reet, October 10. Supposed stolen during the night of 4th instant, from a paddock at Langley Marish, Bucks :— a dark iron grey Pony, with black face and legs as far as knees, 5 years old, about 11 hands high, long tail, mane cut where the collar goes. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, Oc. ober 10. Stolen from Liddington Warren Farm, near Swindon during the night of 4th or morning of 5th instant :- a black stout, cart Horse, about 10 years old, a little white hair above the hind hoof, a small wen on the near side of the lower part of the ft) re ribs, aud long under lip. Value about 15 guineas. Information to Mr. Supt. North, Wilts Constabulary, Swin- don.— Bow- street, Oc'ober 10. 2 POLICE GAZETTE. October 10 Description of a man who on 28th ultimo obtained a Horse and a 2- wheel Drag from the Commercial Hotel, Ormskirk, under the pretence that he wanted to visit farm- houses in tK3 district to sell patent manure, & c.; he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow looking, dark brown hair, cut short, small whiskers, full round face, short neck, and square shoulders; dressed in black twilled suit, black billycock. At one place stated he was seeking orders for pipe- clay and fire bricks. The Horse is light- grey, aged, about 15 hands high, rather cow- legged. The drag is painted green, and lined yellow, blue cloth cushions, brown woollen rug ; silver mounted Harness much worn. A reward of £ 10 will be paid for information leading to the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered, and apprehension of the offender. ' Absconded on 4th instant, charged with stealing a black horse Pony, hog mane, long tail, forelegs run over ; a set of silver- plated Harness, near rose deficient ; and small light spring Van, painted dark green, picked out light greeD. Three men— 1st, 30 years of age, " 5 feet 10 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair and whiskers; dress dark mixture suit, ( tight- fitting trousers), low felt hat. 2nd, 50 years of age, short, fair complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in black frock coat and vest, mixture trousers, boots cut, suffer- ing from gout. 3rd, 30 years of age, medium height, fair complexion, hair and whiskers ; dressed in dark mixture suit, and low felt hat Information to the Director, C. I. D,, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, October 7. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen at Deddington, on 5th instant :— a pair of man's elastic side- spring Boots, nearly new, one has been recently mended in the uppers where the stitches had given way. By a tramp, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, large moustache, little or no whiskers ; supposed to have be « n in the army; dressed in dark brown coat, dark trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to Inspector Wyatt, Police Station, Deddington, Oxfordshire.— Bow- street, October 10. Absconded from Pensford, on 3rd instant, charged with stealing a double- cased Bilver lever Watch and Chain, and upwards of £ 3 in Money :- LYDIA ELIZABETH FILER, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, rather stout built, high cheek bones, dark hair and complexion, dark brown eyes; dressed in a white straw hat, trimmed with black, dark brown jacket, and a light brown stuff dress, may have a new waterproof. Information to Mr. Snpt. Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol, who holds a warrant for her apprehension. — Btrw- st., October 10. Absconded from Louth, on 5th instant, charged with stealing a Jacket ( recovered) .-— PATRICK FEARWICK, labourer, about 42 yerrs of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, brown whiskers, dirty appearance ; dressed in old grey cloth jacket, cotton cord trousers, old vest, and old woollen cap. Informa- tion to Head Constable Lkr d, Town Hall, Louth, Lincoln- shire.— Bow- street, October 10. Charged on a warrant with stealing £ 6 15s., the Monies of his employer, Mr. George Burton Spencer, cab proprietor, Skegness,' or. 3id instant:— ALFRED DOUGHTY, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, and brushes his hai/ forward at sidos of head ; dressed in a dark mixture siugle- breasted groom's jacket, brown or snuff- coloured tight- fitting trousers and vest of same material, stiff black felt hat, stand- up collar, and white linen scarf with pin, the head of which resembles a jockey's cap, and wore a pair of brown sea- side shoes. He is a groom, and has been employed as a cab- driver. He will seek employment at stables ; he is a native of Stain- field, Lincolnshire, and has been convicted at Lincoln, Louth, Donea3tcr, and Wragby. He iwill make his way to London, or some large town. Information to Mr. Supt. Sowden, Spilaby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- tireOctober 7. Stolen from a harvest field at Swan Hill, near Aykeham, on 3rd instant:— a drab diagonal Jacket, man's size, nearly new, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, grey bone buttons, had a small piece of twine attached to top button hole. Supposed by a tramp about 27 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache ; diessed in old long black cloth coat, dark vest and trousers, pink striped shirt, old black cloth cap with peak, old strong boots, one boot cut at the side. Information to Mr. Supt. Spence, North Riding Constabulary Office, Pickering, or to Inspector Dove, Coutty Police Office, Falsgrave, Scarborough.— Bow- sirett, October 7. Stolen at Brownhilla on 2ud instant:— a silver Verge Watch, No. 2225, white dial, piece chipped off the dial near the ring, gold hands, enclosed in a brass case, and steel guard attached; a double- breasted dark corded Jacket, pockets on hips and one irside left breast, black cloth buttons, and dark lining; and an old pair of Militia Boots, with toecaps. By a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale com- plexion, brown hair, dark eyes, slender build, tattooed ' 64' on right firm ( supposed right) and cross flags on breast, small red mark under right eye ; dressed in drab vest, brown cloth trous? rs, holes at the knees, dark cloth cap with peak and knob on top, and stolen jacket and boots ; he stated he had been a soldier, and served in 64th Foot. Wanted at Brownhills, charged with stealing Ducks on 29th ult.:— a boatman, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 iuches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, and proportionate build ; a native of Smethwick, near Birmingham ; dressed in black hard hat, moleskin sleeved vest and trousers, and lace- up boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhiils, near Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 7. Description of J. E. HUNT, charged with obtaining board and lodgings by false pretences from Mr. Poule, of the Virginia Water Hotel, by uttering a fictitious cheque:— about 60 years of age, nearly 60 feet high, a big man, fair, very large eyes, which roll very much when talking, slight white wiskera, slightly bow legged, and a great snuff taker ; dressed in black frock coat, and silk hat with narrow black band. Has been seen in the neighbourhood of Notting- hill, formerly ' resided in the Wandsworth- road, London. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Bungard, Surrey Constablary, Chertsey who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., Oct. 10. Charged on warrant in edinburgh with having fraudu- lently obtained Money ana goods:— SIR CHARLES CUFFE, ( fictitious), about 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium make, dark sallow complexion, grey hair, clean shaved, except curled moustache, seemed to have a stiff neck, sarried head slightly ta one side. Sometimes wore blue serge jacket ssit, sometimes dark velvet jacket, drab knee breeches, high gaiters, round black felt hat, had a horsey appearance, stated he bad been in the army. O.', anchor, two wreaths, several dots, heart and moon on right arm, star, ' S. R.', anchor and flower back of right hand, mermaid, star and flag, and man's face on left arm, square and compasses back of hand, part of bracelet on wrist, ring second finger left, scar on chest and inside left thigh, lost part of left ear, vac. mark top of left shoulder, is a bricklayer aud native of Ramsgate, Kent. Was convicted at Sandwich 10th April, 1862, and sentenced to 3 years penal servitude for obtaining goods by fraud ; and at Dover on 10th April, 1865, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude for frand, as bailee ; aud at the Sussex Assizes, at Lewes, on 26th March last, and sentenced to 10 years penal servitude aud 7 years police supervision, for burglary and stealing Clothes at Eastbourne ; was liberated from Penton- ville Prison on 29th May, 1880. He is supposed to be accom- panied by his wife, who is a short person with very light curly hair, and 3 children, one of which is a baby in arms. Information to Mr. Supt.
