C. * » * Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary tVat. an information should be made and Bworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, tegether with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is msrde for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • I Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to' the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( S). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by . a letter, signed by tho persons forwarding them. INFORMATIONS, MURDER aND maLICIOUSLY Wanted on charge of wounding William Yarwood, wheelwright, of Ncv 11, Fielden Street, Patricroft, between 9.30 p. m. and 10 p. m. 29th ultimo :- a man, about 47 years of age, about 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender build, brown hair, brown whiskers, turning grey, stoops a little whtn walking ; dresaed in a dark mixture cloth coat, dirty mole- skin trousers, blue and white striped cotton shirt, clogs, and dark cloth cap. He is a holder- up for boiler- makers, and has worked at Beswood, near Nottingham, Iron Works at Crewo, blackburn Meadows Iron Works, Sheffield, Barrow- in- Furness, and Wigan, and has tramped England, Ireland and Wales ; he was traced to a beerhouse in Winton after 10 p. m. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester. Bow- street, September 5. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Early or. the morning of 17tli July last, and again late on the night of the same day or early on the following morning, Cookridge Mills, Horsforth, near Leeds, were found on fire in two separate places. .£ 500 reward will be paid to any person or persons who will give such information as shall lead to tho apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and persons coming forward with any information likely to lead to, but not resulting in, a conviction, will be adequately rewarded. Early on the morning of 1st instant a fire was discovered in a stack of Hay in a field, near Machynlleth ; the whole of the stack was burnt. Stolen from the person during the Races on 23rd, 24th, and 25th instant:— A gold lever hunting Watch, No. 25,201,1 T. W.' on back cf outer case, dark pointers, white dial, maker- Myers, London. £ 5 reward. A gold lever |- plate Watch, No. 7397, marken— Arundel. A do. Watch, No. 7038, gold dial, dark pointers, makers— Thos. and John Ollivant, Manchester. A gold Lever, white dial, had attached a gold curb Albert with Lockct, red one side, blue on the other. A lady's gold Geneva lever Watch, had a gold Albert • with tish drop attached. A silver lever Watch, No. 8737, maker— Geo. Cussons, Whitby, ' Margaret Conn' on the inside case. A silver lever Watch, No. 6442, and thin gold Albert attached. A silver lever Watch, No. 5885, heavy case, maker— W. Sawdon, Whitby. A silver lever Watch, maker— Clayton, Castleford, had attached a gold Albert, long links, gold Seal, white on one side and blood- stone on the other. A silver lever Watch, slight bulge in case near figure 5, had attached a gold Albert, curb pattern, very massive, each link stamped 15 carat. Information to Chief Constable Haley, York Police Station, York.— Bow- street, August 31. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen during the night of 2nd instant :— a black marble Time- Piece, large white face, has the name ' Monks, Bros., Paris,' thereOn, strikes a gong every quarter, is about 14 ins. high by 8 inches wide, No. 38,888 ; a brown silk Umbrella, with mottled lyown turned handle ; and a gent's faded green cloth waterproof Coat, a little unstitched imder the collar. £ 2 reward will be paid, by the- ov( net, for information leading to the apprehension and convict. iv « of the thief or thieves and recovery of the property. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Little Hampden, on 5th instant :— a dark blue pilot Jacket, two pockets out- side, one inside ; a dark brown Overcoat, with velvet collar ; a black cloth Jacket, with pockets at the hips, bound with braid ; a pair of worsted cord Trousers, with rule pocket; a pair of dark grey cloth Trousers ; a black cloth Vest, bound with braid ; a worsted cord Vest, with sleeves ; a dark grey cloth Veft; a red arid white silk Handkerchief ; a black silk Handkerchief; a yellow silk Handkerchief, reprtseutiug the flag of all nations ; a silver verge Watch, capped, No. 3000, with steel Chain and Seal attached, the word ' Punch' on the seal. Iiiformation to Inspector Andrews, Bucks Constabu- lary, Wendover, Tring. — Bow- street, September 7. Stolen by moans of housebreaking, between 7' 30 a. m. and 7' 30 p. m. on 2nd instant:— a pair of black cloth Trousers and Vest, nearly new ; a long silver Guard with common Key attached; fi white linen Shirt, marked ' Courtney'; 2 yards of new white Flannel; a babj's Nightdress ; a rough Towel with loop on it. A tramp is suspected, about 18 years of age, fi feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair; dressed in a dark coat, dirty moleskin vest, dirty cord trousers, and brown cap, or may be wearing the stolen Trousers and Vest. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Cope, County Police Station, Hereford,— Bow- street, September 7. Stolen from Malvern Lodge; Percy- terrace, Milverton. during the afternoon of 31 - it ultimo :— a p. old oval- shaped Locket, with black liair plaited one side, and blue enamel on the other side ; two gentleman's gold Studs, plain ; a lady's gold ring, with two green stones, the centre one lost; a gilt Pendant; a small s'lver Brooch, shape of a cross, bee with outstretched wings in centre, and the letlers ' D. O. N. T.' on each corner of the cross ; a square- shappd silver Brooch, with malachite ston? in centre. Supposed by two men, one/ about 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, slight moustache, no whiskers, very stout, and walked very erect; dressed in a brown suit of clothes, high hat, and - high stand- up collar ; the other about 5 feet 5 inches high, pbout 36 yrs. of age, fair complexion, slender build, slight moustache, no whiskers, thin face ; dressed in a light tweed suit, billy hat, and was carrying an ulster- • t: and a small brown portmanteau. Also from a house in Wharf- street, Emscote, same date :— a silver Albert Chain, with Seal aad a yellow stone attached ; a hair Guard ; a gold Pencil- case, with green stone mounted; and a long silver Chain. Both houses were entered by means of skeleton keys, and supposed by the same persons. Information to Mr. Supt. Frankton, Warwick.— Bow street, September 5. Between 11 p. m., 2nd instant, and 7' 30 a. m., 3rd inst., the shop, 257, Castle- street, was entered, and stolen therein:— 1 long silver curb Guard; 2 German silver ditto ; 3 dozen brass rings; 2 Canadian gold Alberts : 2 German silver watch Cases ; 2 German silver Watches ( one new, and one without bezel) ; 1 lady's Geneva silver Watch, second- hand off, no pivet on ; 3 dozen gilt Alberts, various patterns ; 6 sets of gold plated Studs, chased, pearl backs ; 1 silver verge hunting Watch, No. 5083, verge broken, and about 3s. 6d. in Money. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Burton, Police Office, Dudley.— Bow- street, September 5. During the night of 27th ultimo, Dunston Hall, near Chesterfield," was burglariously entered, and a silver Box, about 4 inches long, 3 wide, and 21 deep, fastens with a spring, ornamented with figures, and lined with blue silk, was stolen therefrom. Two men ( tramps are suspected), one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, no whiskers ; dressed in a blue pilot jacket, cord trousers, black hard felt hat, and strong nailed boots. The other, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, sandy hair, turning grey, no whiskers ; dressed in a brown overcoat, dark cloth trousers, dark cloth cap - with ear tab9, and elastic side boots, very much worn. £ 10 reward will be paid for information that will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thieves and recovery of the property. Information to Mr. Supt. Carline, County Polipe Office, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, Sept. 2. Stolen IE. Middlesbrough, by means of housebreaking, between 8 30 p. m. on 28th instant and 7 Am. on 29th inst. :— - a very old double case silver verge Watch"; a gold Bracelet with rix flat links on each aide and » , lij& Vcolour cameo in centre, on the inside of the two centre ® imisVJtvhich are rather larger than the others, is engraved ' Presented to Miss Sarah Watson,' also some other words and a date, supposed to le 1858; a gold Guard, belcher pattern, and a small plain gold Locket. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Station, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, August 31. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Wanted under a Sheriff's warrant, charged " with having on or about 1st instant, stolen 12 Sheep from off the hill - pastures of the farm of Borlick, near Aberfeldy, Perth :— a shepherd, supposed native of Morrar, West Coast of lnverncss- shiro, about 22 yars of age, about 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, very small fair whiskers and moustache, ronnd face, fresh complexion, and stout make; dress-- checked tweed jacket, vest, and trousers, red scarf, and double- peaked knitted cap ; carried a black leather hand- bag and - doth waterproof coat. Was accompanied by a hjack smooth- haired cooliie dog, having small white ring round neck. Accused drove the Sheep direct to the Perth Auction Mart, where he gold them on 2nd instant, but they losing identified iu the Sale Ring, be absconded without waiting for payment. Information to Chief Constable Dodd, Perth.— Bow- street, September 7. Farther description of the Horse stolen from Seend, Wilts, and advertised in Police Gazette of 10th instant :— Instead of being a black, it is a very dark brown atcfltt cob Gelding, 5 years old, 14 hands high, hair under the belly is of a lighter colour, and a troall patch of hair off the right rye '" n front of head, olf hind fetlock white, twists m.. r haiafoor when walking, and was not propferly castrated. Supposed stolen out of a Field near Newbridge, Buabon, • during the night of 19th instant:— a chestnut mare Pony, rising 4 year 3d, between ft and 14 hands high, white stripe down face, tail cut square, shod all round. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham. — Bow- street, August 31. Charged at Whitehaven with stealing a Horse and Cai t ( recovered), on 3rd or 4th instant:- ROBERT ROBSON, 18 or 19 j ears of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion and hair,, no whiskers or moustache, blue or grey eyes, stoutish build, a na'ive of Whitehaven; dressed a dark grey tweed suit, white silk muffler, blue cheese- cutter cloth cap with leather peak, and elastic- side boots ; has been at sea two or three voyages. Information to Mr. Supt. Bird, Constabulary Office, Whitehaven,' or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, August 31. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Remanded at Great Driffield, to 15th instant, on a charge of larceny :— JOHN SMITH, 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, bine eyes, dark brown hair, light moustache, beard shaved off, stoutish build ; native of Ros= common, Ireland, scar on left cheek- bone, finger ends crushed but healed up ; states he has worked in Leeds, as a stone- mason, and lodged in Marsh- lane ; convicted in Hull last June, for hawking combs without a license. Information to Mr. Supt. Harper, Police Office, Driffield, Yorkshire. « — Bow- slreet, September 7. Description of WM. BROWN, for whose apprehension a warrant ig.- issued, on " a charge of stealing 11 cwt. of Iron ( recovered) :— he is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 or II ins. high, dark hair, pale complexion, little or no whiskers, a little light hair on his chin, very large mouth, large feet, and walks splay- footed; dressed in dark monkey jacket, soft black hat, . moleskin irnusers and vest, is a labourer, and has been in the Militia. Information to Mr. Supt. North, Swindon, Wilts. • Bow- street, S'ptember 7. Absconded on 16th May last, charged by warrant with having stolen a quantity of Wines and Spirits from Mr. Alderman Rigby, of Liverpool:- RICHARD COATES, a licensed victualler, about 38 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 ins. high, stout build and inclined to be corpulent, sallow com- plexion, full round face, double chin, jet black curly hair, whiskers and moustache which join, chin shaved, fine full dark eyes ; generally wears a dark cloth walking coat, dark cloth vest and trousers, and round black felt or tall silk ha- He has been in Australia and has most likely emigrated. £ 100 reward will be paid by'Mr. Alderman Rigby for the arrest, on application at his Office, 17, Dale- street, Liverpool. Information to Chief Supt. Williams, Liverpool.— Bow- street, September 7. Charged on a warrant with stealing from his lodgings, on 3rd iustaut:— a gold consular lever Watch, white dial, maker Burington, No. 10,754 ; a crab tweed Coat; and an alpaca Umbrella. . DURY, supposed a Frenchman, stated he had been a captain in the French Lancers, and served in the Franco- Prussian War, between 55 and 60 years of ago, 5 ft. 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and moustache, no whiskers, and bald ou top of head, wore a truss ; dressed, in black braided walking coat, black vest and trousers, bowler hat, and elaitic- side boots. Information to Head Constable Breary, Faversham, kent.-— Bow- st., September 7. The Cart Pad Britchen attached and leather Reins - 8 P O L I C E GAZETTE. April advertised in Police Gazette on 15th July last, have been recovered and a warrant issued against HARRY PRICE alias HENRY GARDENER, charging him with stealing them :— he is about 25 or 26 years of age, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, has a very large lump on his back, swarthy com- plexion, clean shaved, and medium build; dressed in dark Drown mixed suit, old and much worn, old dark cloth cap, and one boot and one clog, and is supposed gone to Birmingham, where he has relatives ; waB seen on the road on 28th July, and then said he was for Birmingham ; has until 29th ultimo been travelling the country with horse and van attending fairs, club feasts,| and wakes, with a Id. show ; in company with a man named JAMES SCOTT, who is n{, w committed for trial at the next Salop Assizes, upon three charges of felony. The man PRICE, eating fire and having stones broken on his chest; they had on the canvass in front of their show—' Professor Duval, Champion Fire King, the only Iron Chested Man in the World.' Stolen on 1st instant from No. 10, River Street, Bed- ford :— a small silver Geneva Watch, maker J. Roberts, London, No. 4,461, a leat- 3r Guard with a threepenny and a fourpenny piece, and a bit of bone like a boar's tusk attached. Supposed by a man about 18 years of age ; dressed in light clothes and old black billy hat. Information to Chief Constable Yerey, Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, Sep- tember 5. Absconded, charged with feloniously converting Lace, value ^ 150, to her own use :— FANNY SHEPHERD, alias MADAME COMER, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, ruddy complexion, brown hair ; dresses well, a milliner and dressmaker, formerly in business at Belgrave Mansions, Pimlico. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of • Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metro- politan Police, September 5. Description of a tramping painter, said he came from Manchester, charged with stealing at Ramsbury, Wilts :— a dark cloth monkey jacket, pockets at sides, and one inside breast, which he is supposed to be wearing, and some painters tools since recovered; about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, stout build, rather respectable appearance, wearing a light grey soft bowler hat; calls at painters shops nbegging. Information to Mr. Supt. PierCe, Marlborough, Wilts.— Bow- street, September 5. Supposed stolen in transit on the Great Eastern Railway, between Bishopsgate and Newport, Essex, on 4th August, 188^ :— a parcel of Shoes, weighing 22 lb., containing 6 paiis of men's lace- up Balmoral Boots. Information to J. II. Nettleship, Great Eastern Railway, Liverpool Street, E. C,— Bow- street, September 5. Description of a man, who is supposed to have committed the jewel robbery in Shrewsbury on 18th ultimo :— about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, very dark complexion ; dressed in black frock coat, and a dark overcoat, dark mixture trousers, high silk hat; had dark full bushy whiskers, slightly mixe„ with gr T, of gentlemanly appearance, had a low common way of talking, wore ring on finger of right hand, and carried au umbrella ; walked with a limp as though he had a stiff hip Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, September 5. Stolen from a dwelling- house, at Derby, on 30th ultimo by a man who had been lodging in the house 3 or 4 nights who said he was a watchmaker, and gave the name of EDWARD GIBSON, 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender build, long sandy whiskers and moustache, sandy hair parted in centre, blue eyes, broad forehead ; of respectable appearance ; dressed in black coat, torn under right arm, dark mixture trousers and vest, black billycock hat:— 3 Watches, one of which was found pledged the same day at Mr. John Eaton's, pawnbroker, St. Peter- street, Derby, for 7s., will very likely have the ticket. No. 5160, in his possession; a silver Boston Lever, white dial, plate on works loose, nearly new; and a silver Geneva Lever, No. 12272, cream- coloured dial, second- hand, very old ( not recovered). May also have in his possession a silver Boston lever Watch, No. 15345, white dial, second hand, gold fingers, worn, which was entrusted to him to clean. Information to Chief Con- stable Delacombe, Derby, who holds warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, September 5. Also stolen from a dwelling- house, at Derby, on 31st ult. : a silver English lever Watch, maker Davenport, Dig- street, Ashbourne, No. 6917, white dial, bit broken off the big finger, engine- turned case, much worn. Supposed by a man who lodged in the house one night, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slender build, dark complexion, dark curly hair, dark moustache, no whiskers, has a large scar or scab inside right wrist; dressed in ( lark grey suit, black billy hat, and dark necktie ; had a black silk cap in his possession, which he wears at night whilst in the house. Stated he was working for the London Telephone Company. Information to Chief Constable Delacombe, Darbj.— Bow- street, September 5. Description of FREDK. FOAKES, alias HUGHES: charged with] larceny of Wearing Apparel ( recovered), at Wrottesley, on 26 th ultimo :— he is 20 years of age, 6 ft. high, pale complexion, light brown hair, cut very short, BO whiskers or moustache, grey eyes, slender build, left elbow injured, causing the arm to be nearly useless, a plumber, has been a short time in the navy, a native of Stourbridge, Worcester- shire; dressed in old smooth brown cloth overcoat, much worn, grey mixture tweed trousers, red neckerchief, hard black high- crowned billy hat, and white twill shirt with the letters ' M. S. W.' in marking ink. Associates with prostitutes. Information to Inspector Gilbride, Tettenhall, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., Sept. 2. Absconded from South Stockton, on 27th ultimo, charged with stealing a black ribbed Vest; a plain black cloth Vest, both new, covered buttons, single breasted, bound with braid; and a small silver Geneva Watch, engraved back, silver dial, gold pointers, had about 12 inches of jet Guard attached. , WALTER WALLER, 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark brown hair, pale complexion ; dressed in dark blue jacket, moleskin trousers, blue silk tie, and black billycock hat. And JAMES STRIPLING, 18 years of age, 5 feet high, brown hair, pale complexion, and walks rather lame from rheumatics; dressed in dark pepper- and- salt coloured coat and vest, moleskin trousers, dark red muffler, or red and blue handkerchief. Both were moulder's apprentices; they belong to the East end of London, and came about 8 months ago from Dr. Bernardo's Home, for Homeless Boys, at 27, Stepney Cause- way, London. Information to Mr. Supt. Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen from a Lodging ^ House, Bodmin, on the night of 30th ultimo :— a silver levei . Watch, marked inside case ' Richard Magor, Byers,'; a pair of grey Trousers; blue' cloth frock Overcoat, with velvet collar ; also a short Coat made of grey material,^ flannel ( lining, white and black st » pe ; and a Purse containing £ 1 7s. 6. By a man, about 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, pale com plexion, dark hair, slight moustache, no doubt is wearing the trousers and short coat, as he left his own iu the room, states he was a French polisber. Information to Mr. Supt. Opie, Cornwall Constabulary, Bodmin.— Bow- st- eet, September 2, Stolen at Stratford- on- Avon, on 25th ultimo, a Sovereign, and a green silk Umbrella, which has been repaired at the seams out- side:— By an Irishwoman, about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high ; dressed in brown Princess robe, Paisley shawl, black velvet hat, trimmed with black feather. Information to the Head Constable, Stratford- on- Avon, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, September 2. Description of CHAS.
