C. » # » " Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary feat an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, o£ tho Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ef Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, iabove, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tfne persons forwarding t- hem. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the propeity, without ihe apprehension of the offender. Between 3 30 and 6 am. 24th iiistant, the dwelling- house of William Cross, of HeadirgtoD, near Oxford, was entered by the back window, and stolen therein :— a pair of man's Socks ; a pair of woman's StockiDgi; 5a. in Silver ; J lb. of Tea ; i lb. dust Tea ; 5 lb. Sugar ; and a bar of Soap. In- formation to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or to Inspector YatesC, ounty Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, July 25. During the night of 19th instant, a carpenter's workshop at Loppington, Salop, was entered by picking the lock, and a li- inch Chisel and a Screwdriver about 2 feet long, both marked on blade near the handle ' D. G.,' and on handles ' D. Gilbert.' Also during the same niglit, the National Schoolroom at Loppington was broken and entered, and 3s. 5d. in Silver and Copper Money stolen from a desk therein, which was broken open, one penny piece is battered very flat and thin on one side ; and a penny reel of black Cotton, the pioperty of Rev. A. Benson. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, Whitchurch, or Sergeant Owen, Wem, Salop.—' tow- street, July 25. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Stoke- upon- Trent, on 22nd instant:— 4 Brooches— one black and gold with name ' Marian Ellen Foiker,' inscribed on back; one a small oval gold do. with hair inside ; another a silver twisted do., set with small stones; and the 4th, a round jet do., cut; a pair of gold Ear- rings, long shape ; a gold keeper Ring, form of a buckle ; and two plated Salts, lined with gold. By a man about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark brown hair, slight moustache, freckled face, and red noB9 ; dressed in dark jacket and vest, light trousers, and hard black hat. Stolen from the person in Brighton, on 21st instant :- r- an open face gold English lever Watch, white dial, 18 carat, compensation balance, maker ' Longford, City, London,' on dial, No. 3744, had attached a 15- carat gold albert chain, pattern, one long link and one short link, with a crossbar, and a gold seal with bloodstone on one side, and cornelian the other side. Stolen between 14th and 21st instant, by means of house- breaking, at Mount- terrace, East Boldon :— a Case containing 4 silver Salts, marked ' W.'; 2 Cases, containing two silver napkin Rings, marked ' W.'; 1 doz. Tea Spoons and 1 pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' W.'; 1 silver Dessert Spoon ; 1 silver Mug ; 2 silver Cups, engraved ' Tees' and'York' Regatta, and the following electro- plated Goods;— 1 Cream Jug, 1 Case of fruit Spoons, 2 Cases, fish Carvers, 1 cake Basket, 1 Case of fruit Knives with pearl handles, 8 small and 8 laige Forks, marked ' W.', 4 Table Spoons, marked ' W.' ; 8 Dissert Spoons, marked ' W.', .5 Tea Spoons and 2 Salt Cellars, marked ' W.'; also a pair of fine black cloth Trousers ; a black Melton tail Coat, side pockets ; a pair of black Morocco leather- covered Opera Glasses, medium size and 3 plain gold Studs. By DANIEL COLLINS, alias MICHAEL FAWCETT, 35 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and clean shaved ; has scars on right side of head under right ear, palm of right hand, left knes and side, right groin, upper lip ; two small scarp on left arm, small mole and scar right arm, lost end of penis, and ring on left little linger. He is a returned convict and may be accompanied by a young woman, wife of one of the men in custody, named Jane Bradley; dressed in a long brown coat, dark trousers, and high- crowned soft felt Yankee hat. Was seen with a quantity of Plate in his possession at Newcastle, in company with other two men who are in custody. Information to Mr. Supt. Harrison, Jarrow- on- Tyne.— Bow- st., July 27. Stolen by means of burglary at Egerton Green, Broxton, between 10 p. m. on 24th and 5 a. m. on 25th instant :— a pair of lace- up Boots with leather socks, caps on toes, with two rows of imitation holes across; a pair of lace- up Boots, recently soled and heeled ; a pair of lace- up Boots, with tips on heels, and have been recently removed from one heel to the other; and about 10 lb. of Cooked Beef. On 20th inst., a Cottage at Newland, near Malvern, was broken and entered, and an old fashioned silver verge Watch, was stolen therein, white dial, plain figures, and rather small residence 45, Stockmar Road, Hackney, warrant issued. In- formation to the " Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— JVow- street, July 22. Stolen during the night of 6th instant, from a stable in Lock's Lane, Mitcham, Surrey :— a dark chestnut mare Cob, 14 hands high, aged, near hind fetlock white, hair rubbed hind quarters by splinter bar, long bushy tail, in fair condi- tion, and had a rope headstall. Information to Mr. Supt. Wiseman, Police Station, Brixton, S. W.— Bow- street, July 20. Stolen from Sherley, on 16th instant:— a dark chestnut Mare, aged, 15 hands high, blind right eye, square cut tail, half bred. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardly, Acocks- green, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, July 20. Remanded at Kington until 26th instant, charged with having in his possession, supposed stolen, a dark chestnut mare Pony, about 13 hands high, fetlock white, near hind foot, and a little white on off fetlock behind; the Pony is in good condition :— EDWARD COLLEY, 32 years of age, 5 ft. 5^ inches high, sallow complexion, and clean shaved, except brown moustache, dark brown hair cut short, grey eyes, mole on left shoulder ; dressed in hard round felt hat, blue monkey jacket, grey vest, nearly new, grey tweed trousers, fly fronts, coloured shirt, blue woollen socks, and lace- up boots. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Edwards, Police Station, Kington, Herefordshire.— Bow- st., July 20. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Supposed stolen from a field near Market Drayton, Salop, during the night of 16th instant :— a black carriage horse, 15 hands 1 or 2 inches high, lame in the round bone in the near kind leg, small contracted feet, the hair rubbed off the head, from the effects of the bridle, 10 or 12 years old, and in rather low condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Merricks, Market Drayton, Salop.— Bow- street, July 25. Description of EDWD. WILLIAMS, alias ROBERTS, alias JONES, charged on suspicion of stealing two Cattle, at Stanton, Salop, on night of 11th instant ( recovered) :— 20 to 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, slight whiskers and moustache, clean chin, dark brown hair, cut short, very thick shoulders, slightly inclined to be round shouldered, otherwise dont appear so stout, has lost part of third or fourth tooth from centre supposed in left upper jaw, and shows a gap when laughing, turns his eyes very quickly about, has been a sailor ; dressed in low hard hat, rather dark pepper- and- salt coat end vest, brown trousers, lace- up boots ; his father resides at Waters- Upton, Salop; was convicted at Salop Quarter Sessions, June, 1880, sentenced to 6 months hard labour, for cattle stealing; supposed now cohabiting with a girl, who in May, 1880, was waiting her trial at Chester, for larceny from person, as he then talked very much about her. Information to Sergeant Owen, Wem, Salop, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, July 25. Left at the Bell Inn, Melksham, on 22nd instant, at 8 a. m — a grey Mare, about 14- 2 hands high, aged, and has lost left eye; also a set of brass mounted trap Harness, with chains about a foot long at end of traces, and a dark coloured Trap, picked out with yellow and white, iron rails at sides, and chain across the bed at back, containing, a blue cushion, whale bone whip, horse rug, & c., also [ a feed for the horse. By a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, and had the appearance of a dealer. He is supposed to have left Melksham by the 8 a. m. train, for Bristol. Information to Mr. Supt. White, Wilts Constabulary, Trowbridge.— Bow- street, July 25. Stolen on the night of 15th instant, at Tunbridge Wells : .— a dun or dark cream- coloured mare Pony, 7 years old, 13 hands high, black mark down back from mane to tail, black hairs in mane, is cow hocked, and lias had a colt; silver- plated Harness, rather old, reins deficient; and a butcher's Cart, painted dark green, picked out with white, one shaft has been broken and an iron plate bolted on the under side, the wings have also been repaired with iron plates, two spokes and the tire of one wheel are loose, name on back ' Wm. Oliver, Butcher, Tunbridge Wells.' £ b reward will be paid by Mr. Oliver, Tunbridge Wells, to any person who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the property, and apprehension and conviction of the offender. Information to Mr. Supt. Embery, Police Office, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, July 25. Obtained by Fraud, 14th instant, from a livery stable keeper at Greenwich :— a bay gelding Pony, 13 hands high, white star on forehead, black points, off hip clipped, saddle marked ; a four- wheel Chaise, painted chocolate picked oat red, silver- plated Harness nearly new, crest a stags head, and a yellow Rug with black stripes. By ARTHUR YOUNG, 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, slight moustache ; dressed in grey suit, hai'd felt hat, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Description of a travelling hat cleaner, wanted for steal- ing a Hat from the Cross Keys Inn, Highworth, on the evening of 23rd instant ( recovered) :— he is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, grey whiskers; dressed in a dark coat, light brown trousers and vest,- and high hat; carried a flag basket. Information to Mr. Supt. North, Wilts Con- stabulary, Swindon.— Bow- street, July 27. WM. ROLLISON ALEXANDER, wanted at Hun- stanton, St. Edmunds, Norfolk, for embezzlement, ' and advertised in Police Gazette 11th instant, has been appre- hended and committed for trial at the Norfolk Assizes.— Bow- street, July 27. Charged on a warrant with appropriating to his own use during the last two months, a silver lever Watch, No. 16 024,' white dial; a silver lever Watch, No. 9,{> 71, maker's name supposed Wolfe, Sunderland ; and a patent silver lever Watch :— JOHN WM. BOUSFIELD, or BUSFIELD, a watch- maker or watch- jobber, about 50 years of age, 5 ft. 10 inches high, sallow complexion, proportionate figure, flat nose, has been broken, all his fingers are more or less contracted, dark brown hair, dark brown whiskers all round face, a native of York, speaks the Yorkshire dialect; dressed in a dark shabby suit, straw hat with black band round it, and low- laced shoes. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunn, County Con- stabulary Office, Durham.— Bow- street, July 27. Stolen at Barton Grove, Barton, about 6 p. m. on 21st instant, i,' l 12s. in Silver and Copper :— by a young man, 18 years of age, light sandy hair, small features, and stoops a little; dressed in plaid linen jacket, brown Guernsey, with double row of buttons in front, black billy cock hat, yellow- woollen scarf, and lace- up boots, and stated that he belonged to Birmingham. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, July 27. Charged on a warrant with stealing Fowls, at Melford, on 7th instant:— JOHN WILDING, a labourer, about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair cut short, brown eyes, no hair on face, one knee lias been dislocated, and bends slightly inwards when walking ; dressed in grey coat, corduroy trousers, round cap, and lace- up boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Chapman, Boxford, or to Inspector Grimwood, Long Melford.— Bow- street, July 27. Stolen at Gorton, between 11 a. m. 16th, and 8 &. m. 10th instant:— ,£ 10 in Sovereigns and Half- sovereigns. Supposed by a man who lodged at the house two nights :— about 45 or 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, thin features, small eyes, dark curly hair, dark moustache, and bow legged ; dressed in dark tweed coat and vest, dark ribbed trousers, striped stockings, and blucher boots ; stated he had lived as a gardener with a gentleman at Preston. In- formation at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester. — Bow- street, July 25. Absconded from Abberystwith, Cardiganshire, on 18th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a 48 inch gold and black painted Bicycle, break in front, the left side handle rather rough made— a lad ( a scholar), 17 years of age, rather short and thick set, fair complexion, dark brown hair, slight moustache ; dressed generally in brown jacket and vest, knickerbockers, blue stockings, black cap, or a jimcrow hat, and low shoes. Went by train to Swansea, having with him a wooden box or trunk, and the stolen bicycle, the latter he will likely dispose of, as he had not much money. Informa- tion to Deputy Chief Constable Lloyd, or Sergeant Evans, Police Station, Aberystwith.— Bow- street, July 25. Stolen at Blackpool, between 11 p. m. 21st instant and 7 a. m. on 22nd instant:— a light- coloured wood Tea Caddy, about 8 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, two compartments containing 2 Sovereigns; a brown leather sometimes wears dark overcoat, brown sleeve vest, cord Purse, half- moon shape, with a strap round it, containing trousers, lace- up boots, appearance of a stableman, last known | £ 1 10s. in Gold; 3 pairs of button Boots, to fit children 9 2 POLICE GAZETTE. July 27 years, 4 years, and 2 years of age, nearly new; a pair of twilled cotton sheets ; a black silk Skirt; a felt Skirt . with- out seam ; a black and white woollen plaid Shawl; a blue sateen Frock, trimmed with blue velvet, nearly new; a plain black silk Frock, both to fit a girl 9 years of age ; and an' alpaca Umbrella. By a young woman who had lived as servant in the house since 11th instant, about 17 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, good- looking, fresh complexion, dark brown hair; dressed in black cloth jacket, drab- coloured Princess robe, black straw hat, trimmed with brown velvet. She stated that her mother was a wiiow aud resided in Man- chester, that her father was a bricklayer and died suddenly in bed about 5 months since. She came from Liverpool, via, Southport, on 10th instant. Information to County Police Office, Kirkham.— Bow- street, July 25. Absconded 21st instant, charged on a Warrant with embezzlement:— FREDERICK SHOEL, late of 71, Herbert Street, New North Road, 46 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout, fair complexion, full brown beard, whiskers and mou- stache, curly hair, bald top of head, prominent nose ; dressed supposed in black frock coat, and vest, grey tweed trousers, good address, and gentlemanly appearance. Supposed accom- panied by his wife, 36 yeara of age, fair, very stout, medium height. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, Old Jewry.— Bow- street, July 25. Charged on a warrant, at Bilston, with stealing a silver English patent lever Watch, No. 6680, and a silver Guard, on 16th instant:— WM. LLOYD, about 43 years of age, 5 ft. 9 OEJO inches high, slender build, dark eyes and hair, long sMKp nose, dark whiskers and moustache, turning grey, is a pensioner from tho army, and receiving his pension from the Lichfield district; dressed in dark pepper- and- salt coloured tweed coat and vest, and trousers of a lighter material, elastic side boots ( much worn) and small hard felt hat. Resides at No. 40, Wynn Street, Egbaston, near Birmingham. Infor- mation to Mr. Chief Supt. Longden, Constabulary Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, July 22. WILLIAM GIVEN, watch cleaner, advertised in Police Gazette of 14th March last, charged with larceny as bailee, is not yet apprehended :— he is about 60 jears of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, grey eyes, hair, and whiskers, sallow com- plexion, pug nose, medium build, is a good workman. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Lennon, Chelmsford, Essex, who holds a warrantrfor his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 22. Stolen at Wolverhampton, on 20th instant:— a ladies gold Ring, set with pearls and rubies, one ruby missing ; a ladies gold Ring,| set with five garnets, one garnet missing ; a ladies gold Ring, set with white opal stones. By a man and woman, who took lodgings at the house on 19th instant, stayed one night and left on the following day, The man is about 35 years of age, short slender build, pale face ( looks ill), black hair, black moustache ; dressed in black cloth coat, grey trousers, hard black felt hat. The woman is about 23 years of age, tall and slender build ; dressed in black alpaca dress, black straw hat, and imitation gold chain round her neck. Stated she was the mans wife, and they both had come from Shrewsbury. Information to Deputy Sergeant Day, Police Office, Wolverhampton.— Bow- street, July 22. Stolen at Botherfield, Sussex, between 11 ard 12 a. m., on 18th instant :— an English silver lever Watch, double case, a silver Chain attached ; a lady's small Geneva Watch; a silver lever Watch ; also 8 Sovereigns, 5 Half Sovereigns, and 10s. in Silver. By a man from 20 to 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair and moustache, slight figure, ana gentlemanly appearance ; dressed in a dark suit, and black bowler hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, July 22. Stolen on 18th instant at West Strefford:— a single case silver Geneva Watch, No. 4445 or 44445 ; supposed by a Man who lodged at the house, and who left the same day, 18 years * of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a light brown suit, elastic- s. ide boots, and low black hat, stated he had been a pupil teacher in Saint Augustine School at Bristol. Information to Inspector Winchcombe, Police Station, Hungerford, Berks. — Bow- street, July 22. Absconded, charged with embezzlement: — SIMON HYMAN, a Jew, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, swarthy complexion, blotched face, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in grey tweed Buit, blaek felt hat; supposed to be travelling the country soliciting orders for cigars. Informa- tion to the Director, C. I. D,, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Bow- street, July 20. Charged with stealing a Watch ( recovered), from Wallingford, on 16th instant:— two men, one about 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in hard black felt hat, striped shirt, brown shooting coat, light trousers, and light made shoes. The other about 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, thin figure, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in small round black felt hat, blue neck tie, dark coat, and dark trousers. They pawned the Watch at Oxford the same day ; W6re traced as far as Eynsham, five miles beyond Oxford, then going in the direction of Bristol Information to Inspector Dorrell, Berks Constabulary, Wallingford.— Bow- street, July 20. Absconded from Aberystwith, Cardiganshire, on 14th instant:— JAMES MEREDITH, an accountant and collector of income tax, charged on warrant with unlawfully appro- priating to his own use £ 69 lis. 7d., money collected by him as income tax; 33 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark brown hair, and small brown whiskers and moustache, nose very red from drinking; dressed in dark and red striped welsh cloth suit, black bowler hat, carried a small satchel, was traced to Machynlleth. Information to Deputy Chief Con- stable Lloyd, Aberstwith.— Bow- street, July 20. Charged on warrant with stealing 10s., at Elmhurst, on 8th instant:— WILLIAM YATES, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, short sandy moustache, no whiskers, stout build, rather large nose ; farm labourer, and native of Colton, near Rugeley ; dressed in blue pilot jacket and vest, woollen cord trousers, soft black sammy hat, and a new pair of water- tight boots. Has been travelling the Rugeley district with an entire horse, and he may obtain similar employment elsewhere. Information to Inspector Barrett, Town Hall, Rugeley, Staffordshira— Bow- street, July 20. Stolen on the night of 17th instant, at Lower Hemies, near Eccleshall:— an old verge Watch, silver cases ; a German silver neck Guard, a brass albert Chain, and two small foreign Coins attached to watch ; a Sovereign, two half Crowns, and one Florin ; and a brown peck market Basket j by a youth, 16 years of age, 4 feet 10 or 11 inches high, thin freckled face; dressed in dark blue pilot jacket, dark cloth striped vest, black cloth trousers, strong lace- up boots, and coloured straw hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Crisp, Police Office, Stone, Staffordshire, or to Sergeant Johnson, Police Office, Eccleshall, Staffordshire. — Boic- street, July 20. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) Absconded from Martley, Worcestershire, on 11th inst., charged with committing a rape :— CHARLES ROWLEY, farm labourer, 21 years of age, about 5 feet 8 ii ches high, medium build, fresh complexion, light brown hair, very little if any whiskers or moustache; supposed dressed in a light brown mixture tweed suit, and a brown mixture cloth over- coat, very long with band round waist, black hard felt hat. Description of ANDREW MURRAY, committed on 20th instant for 2 months to York Castle as a rogue and vagabond :— 20 years of age, 5 feet 1J inch high, dark brown ayes and hair, cropped very short, very small and thin whiskers by side of face, swarthy complexion, pimply skinned face, right eyelid drops, has a habit of shutting it and using only the left eye occasionally, low forehead, protruding mouth, a very ill and forbidding countenance, rather stiffly built and muscular, tattooed on both forearms, scar over left eye, one in centre of forehead, and is a native of Blackburn ; dressed in a very shabby old faded grey mixture jacket, old black cloth vest, old, torn and badly mended fustian trousers, white cotton neckerchief, woven, woollen cap, and without boots or stockings ; described himself as a labourer or basket maker, and stated was going to Grimsby to make fish baskets, but worked at shoe- making in the above- named School. Description of a female who travelled from Selby to Market Weighton, on 25th instant, arriving at the latter station, on N. E. R., by the 1 p. m. train, and had at that time a very young infant with her which she subsequently left in the ladies' waiting room at the above station, and having re- arranged her outer wraps, returned from Weighton by the 3* 5 p. m. train towards Selby, but cannot at present be traced frofti this train :— Tall and slender figure, about 32 years of age, pale complexion, apparently in ill health, and in a weak condition, as though very recently confined ; dressed iu a dark bonnet with light feather, old lace veil over it, black jacket under a red shawl, dark grey stuff dress, knitted woollen neckerchief ; had a small fancy basket. She carried the child • wrapped in a grey shawl. She stated at a place where she went for refieshments that she was going from Liverpool to Hull. When she left Weighton she had taken off the red shawl and neckerchief, and replaced the former by a grey shawl; the basket was also not seen, and she had a shawl or something rolled up and strapped. The Child is only about 3 or 4 days old; dressed in two long cotton gowns, a white flannel skirt, cotton shirt, and flannel binder. It was wrapped about the head with part of a woman's flannel skirt, and had a feeding- bottle by its side and 2 half- crowns, and seemed very sleepy as if drugged. There were no marks on its body or clothes. The left eye was discoloured through cold. States ho worked efore and after Christmas for a Mr. Miller, a painter at Polton, Bedfordshire, from there he went to London, and lodged at No. 1, Eden Grove, Holloway, with a Mr. Parker, from there he tramped to Brighton and Eaatbourne, then into Suffolk, and worked a fortnight for a Mr. Haywood, Saxmundham, from there to Yarmouth and Norwich.
