POLICE CONTAINING ' Hit substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of am aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Th Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate at passible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6631 FRIDAY, JULY^ i, 1881. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, » above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without ihe apprehension of the offender. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Early on the morning of 21st instant, the naked dead body of a female child, apparently between two and four months old, was found in the six foot way, on the Main Line of the Caledonian Railway, about a mile north from Perth. Between 12.15 and 1 a. m. 28th ultimo, the Booking Office of the Guide Bridge Railway Station was broken into and entered and the sum of 14s. 4d. ( 5s. iu Copper and the remainder in small silver), stolen from a cash drawer therein. Entrance effected by breaking a pane of glass in the office window and forcing the drawer open with a poker. The im- pression of strong nailed boots was found on a portion of a ' Railway Guide,' which was found lying on the floor. They were seen carrying their jacket or coat loosely round them, m. vvy fashion ; are likely to seek employment at docks as well as on the railways. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 10 a. m. 23rd, and 6' 30 p. m., 24th instaut :— a lady's silver lever Watch, ' Grimshaw and Sons, London,' Nd. 6774, engine- turned case, silver coloured dial, steel seconds hands ; had attached a long thin silver Guard, curb pattern, with old fashioned screw swivel; a long hair Guard, with gold mountings ; a gold Ring, with seal, monogram ' A Gi'or ' L. T.' engraved on it; a small gold pencil case, with ring to attache to a guard ; a small round gold Locket with glass at end ; a pair of gold rimmed spectacles. Information to Mr. Supt. Webb, Bowgrave, near Garstang.— Bow- street, June 27. During the night of 19th instant, Stoke- on- Tern Parish Church, Salop, was entered, and an iron safe, about 3 cwt,, containing all Pariah Registers and Documents, a brass Cross, about 6 inches high On four legs and little round balls for feet, a brass alms Plate about a foot in diameter, were stolen from the vestiy therein. The safe and part of registers and documents have been recovered, much damaged, the following things are still missing :— a Register from about 1540 to 1653; a Register of xiarials, from 1813 to 1877 ; and a Register of Baptisms, from 1813 to 1837 ; a black silk shoulder Scarf, for clergyman to wear at funerals, much worn ; three silk Book Markers, one red, one white, and one violet; a pair of old elastic- side Boota, used for organ playing. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 8 and 11' 30 a. m., 23rd inst.. from a cottage at Thursley, Surrey : a lady's silver Watch, flowers engraved on back, one gold arid one steel hand, long silver Guard attached ; a gold Keeper Ring, ' E. W.' engraved thereon ; a £ 10 Bank of England Note; a ,£ 5 Note, upon Messrs. Melleiish's Bank, Godalming; and about £ 5 in Gold and Silver. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 16th instant, at Groton :— One Half- Sovereign, and 25s. 4d. all in Coppers; a red Bilk pocket Handkerchief ; and a red cotton Do. By two men, one about 28 or 30 years of age, about 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, light complexion, moustache, no whiskers, tattooed on back of one or both hands, stout build, and very much sunburnt; dressed in white blouse jacket, fustian trousers and vest without sleeves, dark cloth cap with leather peak, and knot on the top, and heavy nailed boots. The other about 30 to 32 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, swarthy com plexion, 2 or 3 front upper teeth out, stout build, and very HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a stable at Stanstead, Kent, durins; the night of 27th ultimo :— a dark brown Welsh cart Mare, 12 yrs. old, 14 hands high, three white fetlocks, white down face, hind legs recently clipped, icug tail, aud in fair condition. Was seen passing through Lee, Kent, between 3 and 4 a. m, on 28th ultimo, tied behind a greengrocer's cart, two men of pikey appearance were driving. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen at Water Hayes Earm, Chesterton, between 11' 30 p. m., 28th, aud 6 a. m., 29th ultimo :— three milch Cows, two red and white, the other white ; and twc> Stirks, one year old, one red and white, one strawberry colour. Stolen at Wingerworth, between 18th and 23rd ultimo : — a Russian bay horse Pony, black legs, 5 years old, 13 hands 1 inch high, and branded with the letters' R. C. 1 on near fore foot. Stolen from Hertford, on 24th instant:— a bay mare Pony, 4 years old, about 14 hands high, has a hole in the right cheek, and a long tail. Stolen during the night of 25th instant, froni a field at ' Teddington, near Thame, Oxon :— a light brown cob Horse, 8 years old, about 14 hands high, with black mane and tail, in good condition. £ 5 reward will be gi'en on recovery of tint Horse and apprehension of the offenders. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ferneby, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, June 27. Stolen from a field at Sheepshed, Leicester, during the night of 20th inst.:— a bay nag Mare, 14 hands high, 5 years old, white star on forehead, switch tail, two chips on near side, two or three white spots ou off side of back, splint on off fore leg below the knee, and iu good condition. Supposed by a man, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, very aark complexion, and of medium build ; dressed in dark clothing and hard hat. Supposed from Norfolk, and had been assisting the owner with horses ou 20th inst. at Bilton Fair,, Information to Mr. Supt. June 24 LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Charged on a warrant at Bedale with stealing a barn- door Fowl ( recovered):— WILLIAM KETTERWELL, a farm labourer, a native of Bedale, 24 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, blue eyta and stout build ; dressed in dark coat, vest and trousers, hard billycock hat, aud strong boots. He is a notorious poacher, frequents public- houses, and associates with low com- pany of druuken habits ; may be found on some public work ; has friends in Bradford. Information to Mr. Supt. Nicholson, N. R. Constabulary, Leyburn, or to Inspector Holmes, Police Station, Bedale, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 1. Description of ELIZABETH DAYIES, alias CLARA MARION ROVER, in custody at Heighley, charged with stealing Wearing Apparel, and other Articles, ( all recovered, with the exception of a lady's gold Watch, Geneva make white dial, black figures, a small stone shaped as a female's head in centre of outer case), from a dwelling- house at East- burn, near Keighley, where Bhe had been in service since 13th April last, 16 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, well built, fresh complexion but dark- looking, dark brown hair, brown eyes, pleasant manner aud fluent, very innocent demeanour, a mill- hand or servant, aud a native of Altrincham, Cheshire. She has evidently been obtaining her living for some time past by imposing upon the charitably- disposed ; her practice has been to pretend to lose her purse at a railway station, or other likely place, and then to give a false ntme, address, & c, to the person who advanced the money ; or to be in search ot some lady to whom she had been recommended as a servant, and to be destitute, when, after being kept for a week or two, she absconds with Money or Clothing ; she makes use of the names of various good families iu Cheshire aud other places, and states that her father, Victor Middleton, or similar name, was an artist and surveyor, and was killed by a runaway horse, that she has a fortuue left her, and other similar false statements. Information to Mr. Supt. Ireland, N. R. Con- stabulary, Keighley, Yorkshire.— Dow- street, July 1. Stolen on 28th ultimo, from a yard :— a Spirit Level, marked ' J. Jones, W. Pool,' on brass plate; a 2- foot Rule, nearly new, figures on br ass hinges or dots ; ( and a Smoothing Plain and a tape Measure, recovered). By a tramping car- penter or saw setter, about 37 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light sandy hair, « hiskera, and moustache ; dressed in a black coat, light trousers, and boots cut in front to ease his feet; carried a wooden vice, and a black bag or satchel across his shoulders. He left by the 9 p. m. train for Oswestry the same day. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow street, July 1. Stolen in Windsor, on 30th ultimo :— a gold Watch and Chain, recovered in pawnshop ; a plaid Coat and Waistcoat; a pair of brown Trousers, a piece about 5 or 6 inches in length let in . at the bottom of one leg. By a lodger, HENRY WOODRUFF, from 22 to 24 years of age, about 5 feet 4 to 6 inches high, dark complexion, very Bmall moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in hard felt hat, flat crown, black cutaway coat, grey trousers, plaid waistcoat, elastic- side boots ; might be wearing the stolen clothes. Charged with laiceny :— PETER BUTTER, collier, 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, dark side whiskers, shaves under. clnn, and blue mark over one eye; dressed in dark mixture tweed reefer jacket and vest, black cloth trousers, lace- up boots, and h « rd black billycock hat. JAMES YATES, about 40 or 45 years of age, 6 feet high, dark hair and whiskers round face, and no moustache ; dressed when last seen in Mack cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, cap tied on top with ribbon, and boots, and is a collier. WHALLEY, alias GALLOWS, collier, 41 years of age, 5 ft. 9 ins. high, dark brown hair, pale complexion, clean shaved, lame of left leg, being shoiter than right; dressed in blue cloth monkey jacket, dirty cord trousers, blue cap with peak in front, and clogs. ES PAYNTON, about 30 years of age, 5 feet f3 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, slight dark whiskers and moustache, ' Harriet' tattooed on wrist, blue rings on fingers, and other tattio marks on arms; dressed in dark suit of clothes, and a skinner. Stolen at Gravesend, on 27th ultimo :— a silver open- face Geneva Watch, No. 17456, Nos. supposed scratched on dome ' 47710' or ' 51327'; a gold Brooch, round centre, three rings round same, with small glass buck for portrait; gold Ear- rings, long drop pattern, rather open at the sides; a Cash- box, containing Bet of gold shirt Studs, round pattern, chased on face, plain gold oval sleeve Links, a Marriage Certificate, Freedom of Waterman's and Lighterman's Companies; along black ribbed cloth Overcoat, two inside and three outside pockets, lined with black silk, and quilted. By a painter, at work in the house, 33 or 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slight build, pale complexion, reddish whiskers and moustache ; dressed iu short dark coat, pockets ou hips, dark vest and trousers, hard hat, spring- side boots; supposed residing in Camden Town or Islington. Absconded from Middlesbrough on 25th ultimo, charged with stealing a slater's Hammer, Lath Axe, and Knife, the property ( of his late masters, Messrs. Tyerman Brothers, slaters :— HENRY ROBERTS, alias HENRY PICKERS- GILL, about years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, no whiskers, sandy hair inclined to carl, proportionate make ; dressed in dark ribbed cloth coat, dark tweed cloth trousers torn at seat, and small black billy- cock hat; a slater, and native of Ripon. Stolen on 22nd ultimo, between 5 aud 7 p. m., in East Grinstead :— a silver Watch and Chain ( Watch recovered) By a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fair complexion, Bears about face, light hair, heavy light moustache, Btout figure ; dressed in moleskin trousers, no jacket, black billycock hat, vest with pocket torn. Absconded on 22nd ultimo, charged with embezzlement: —. WM. Charged at Birmingham, on a warrant with Embezzle- ment — JAMES DOWN, about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark whiskers on side of face, aud throat turn- ing grey, dark hair going bald, pale face, thin features, slender build, dresses respectable, quick walker, short step, Bharp spoken, and quick in general.
