Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to tho Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is givon, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to tho Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not bo made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, » .' » boye, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) Tho conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by t'no persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for tho return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. Absconded, 1st instant, charged on a warrant with forgery :— JOSEPH PITTMAN, late of No. 9, Dorchester- place, Blandford- square, W., 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slim build, sallow complexion, dark hair, slight moustache ; dressed in light coloured suit, yellow gloves, and brown hard felt hat; carried a cane. Information to Inspector MeWilliams, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, Old Jewry, E. G.— Bow- st., June 15. Remanded at Woolwich Police Court, for forging and uttering a cheque :— FREDERICK ONSLOW MAY, alias WYATT, 30 years oi age, 5 feet 82 inches high, complexion fresh, hair dark, full moustache, whiskors and beard shaved off; dressed blue serge jacket, mixture trousers, blue necktie, lace boots, black felt hat, gentlemanly manners. Represents himself as the sou of a nobleman, and that he is about to receive a large sum of money from his solicitors. Has been convicted at Lewes and Horsham, and is supposed to be wanted for fraud, and obtaining horses and traps from livery stable keepers. Description of] GEORGE HENRY BOWES, late of Wakefield, clerk, officer or servant, up to 9th instant, was Steward in Her Majesty's Prison, at Wakefield, charged on warrant with falsifying a Banker's Pass Book, belonging to the Prison Commissioners, 49 years of nge, 5 feet 9 ins. high, or thereabouts, proportionately made, brown hair aud slight whiskers, rather tinged with grey, brown or hazel eyes, high forehead, slightly marked from smallpox, crooked nose, which rather inclines to the left, appoars as if at some time it had been broken. He is fairly educated, and of good manners and address; dressed in a light- brown overcoat, [ brown cloth trousers, and b! a; k billycock hat; he was formerly in America, and may endeavour to return to that country. Stolen from the person at Alfreton, on 22nd ultimo :— a silver Lever Watch, silver dial with gold flowers and figures, No. 37146, maker ' C. Aaronson, 73, Stork- street, Cheetham, Manchester.' Stolen between 12 p. m. and 3 a. m. 9th instant, from the person, at Stock- lane, Uttoxeter:— a small gold Geneva Watch, white dial, plain figures, and black steel hands, a small gold Albert Guard, with imitation gold Locket attached. Also stolen at the same time and place, from the person : — an old silver verge Watch, double case, cream- coloured dial, black figures, and black steel hands, maker,^ W. Slater, Uttoxeter,' on works, steel Albert Guard, curb pattern, attached. By a man, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, stout build, pale complexion, dark brown hair and- whiskers sides of face, no moustache or beard ; dressed in old dark tweed jacket and trousers, the latter recently patched on knees, double peak old dark billycock hat, and leather lace- up boots, part worn ; native of Darlaston, a groom, but has worked at Walsall recently as a haine polisher ; he frequents public and beer- houses, sings, & c. Information at Police Station, Uttoxeter.— Bow- street, June 13. Stolen from the person at Partridge Green, on 7th instant :— A silver geneva Watch, open face, short steel guard attached, ' R. Woolven' scratched on the outside case ; Also a silver geneva Watch, with part of a small silver chain attached, the glass much scratched, and a dent in the back of case ; by a man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, stout built; dressed in dark brownclothes, and black felt hat ; and a woman about 38 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, thin face ; dressed in black dress body, the skirt of a lighter colour, dirty black and white plaid shawl, dark hat and white apron. They attend fairs and clubs, playing a concertina, and have small dancing dolls 011 boards, which the man plays with his foot, can be identified. Information to Mr. Supt. Henderson, West Sussex Con- stabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street June 13. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM . THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Cockermouth Hiring Fair, on ,6th instant:— a silver lever Watch, No. 59344, makers name BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. The Church at Cley, was on the night of 5Lli instant, broken into, and the offertory box broken open aud contents stolen. Supposed by a tramp seen on the spot the same night, between 40 and 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high ; dressed in beaverteen jacket and trousers, red necker- chief and cap with peak, lost part of thumb from right hand, which he said was lost when engaged in the whale fishing. He said he was a native of Whissonsett, in Norfolk, but had been away many years, gave the name of CANTON, alias NILAND, talked about fishing, also bricklaying & c., frequents common lodgiug houses. Information to Inspector Hobbs, Holt, Norfolk.— Bow street, June 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on 16th instant, at Groton :— One Half- Sovereign, and 25s. 4d. all in Coppers ; a Jred silk pocket Handkerchief ; and a red cotton Do. By two men dressed as navvies, one about 28 or 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light complexion, moustache, no whiskers, and stout build ; dressed in white bio t « e jacket, fustian trousers, dark coloured cap with peak, and heavy nailed boots. The other from 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, no wliif- keri or mous- tache, 2 or 3 front upper teeth out, stout build ; dressed in old dark coat and vest, white guernsey laid open in front, and no shirt on, blue handkerchief with white spots round his neck, dark- coloured cap with peak, and heavy nailed boots. Both men very much sunburnt. They were traced the same day to Shelford and Duxford, Cambridgeshire, and Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen) by means of burglary, from Stechford Hall, near Birmingham, during the night of 16th instant:— a Centre Piece, • with square silver Stand 9 inches long, surmounted by a bronze elephant with ivory tusks, carrying a silver castle ; a silver Tea Pot, chased ; a do. Waiter, 20 inches diameter ; 6 do. Tea Spoons; a do. Knife, Fork and Spooa ; a do. Toast Rack; a do. Indian Medal, ' Davidson'; 21 doz. electro- plated Dessert Spoons; ^- doz. do. Table Spoons ; 1- doz. do. Fish Knives ; 1 doz. do. Dessert Knives ; 1 doz. do. Des- sert Forks ; 11 doz. do. large Forks ; 11 doz. do. small Forks; an electro- plated Ice Folk ; a do. Soup Ladle. The whole of the above property bearing the crest— a man's hand holding a wreath. Information to Mr. Supt. Gallaway, Police Station, Aston Park, Birmingham.— Bow- street, June 20. Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 8th instant, from a wheelwright's shop at Isfield, Sussex, the following tools :— a seven and a half inch Square ; a pair of Compasses, and a two foot Rule. These tools were offered for sale at Eastbourne, on 9th instant, by a man, 39 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, full face, brown hair, ginger moustache, whiskers shaved off, rather stout built, a tramping carpenter ; dressed in a black billycock hat, light brown mixture cloth coat, blue plaid trousers, and had with him ' a [ rough blue cloth over coat. Information to Mr, Supt. Peerless, Uckfield, or to Mr. Supt. Newnham, East- bourne, Sussex.— Bow- street, June 17. Stolen by means of burglary, from Hew^ l Hall, near Bromsgrove, during the night of 13th instant: — au oriental table Cover, cashmere, amber or yellow, embroidered with may coloured silks ; believed to have Arabic letters on it iu silk embroidery, lined with yellow lama. Stolen by meAtis of housebreaking, between 2 and 4' 30 p. m-, on 12th instant, at Ludgershall :— a pair of men's lace Boots, much worn, with caps 011 toes, and hooks, the right boot has a tip on the heel, and the left boot is without a tip ; a white calico man's Shirt, with buttons sewn on with red cotton ; aud 3 cotton pocket Handerchiefs. two with a d « rk coloured border, and one red border. Information to Inspector Ray, Police Station,, Brill, Than ,' , ton.— Bow- street, June ' 15. Further information respecting tlie housebreaking at Eastnor, advertised in Police Gazette of 8th instant. The whole of the property ( except towel and food) recovered, sold to cottagers at Castle Moreton, Worcestershire, on the day of the robbery. By a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, medium build, dark hair and whiskers, sallow complexion, squints; dressed in short dark coat, light grey trousers and round hard felt hat. He say3 the clothes which lie disposes of, are bought from pawnshops. Information to Mr, Supt. Smith, Police Station, Ledbury, Herefordshire.— Bow- st., June 15. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 6 and 8 p. m., 12th instant, at Sparkbrook :—£ b( i iu Gold, two £ 5 packets of Silver ; a Cheque drawn on Midland Bank for £ i 10s.. payable to A. E. Ensell, indorsed ; a Cheque, crossed, for £ 2 18s. 7d., payable to Stephen Wright, indorsee".; a nickel- plated 5 Chamber Revolver, marked ' English Bull Dog.' Stolen by means of burglary, from Aslifurlong Hall, Sutton- Coldfield, near Birmingham, on 10th instant :— a sniiff- co'oured mackintosh Overcoat, light brown lining, had a pair of dogskin Gloves, aud a pocket Handkerchief marked ' M. W. Wilson,' in pocket; a boy's grey check Overcoat, newly bound with grey braid ; a gold pencil Case, marked ' W. S.,' amethyst stone, small piece broken off; a pair silver sugar Tongs ; and two silver Thimbles. Information to Mr. Supt. Gallaway, Police Station, Aston Park, Birmingham.— Bow- street, June 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from a field at Whatton - in - the - Yale, Notts, between 6 p. m., on 16th, and 4 a. m , on 17th instant:— an iron grey Mare, 5 years old, about 15 hands 2 or 3 inches high, has a lump on off hock, where she has been kicked. By a man, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high ; dressed in dark blue suit, low crowned billy hat ; carried a drab overcoat on his arm, & nd a little stick iu his hand, believed to be clean shaved, looked like a shabby horse dealer, wore tight fitting trousers. Information to Mr. Supt. Somerset, Bingham, Notts.— Bow street, June 20. Stolen from Sutton- park, Sutton Coldfield, on 15th inst.: a Cow and five Heifers ( recovered). By two men : one is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh com- plexion, sandy whiskers and moustache, shaves his chin, hair brown ; diessed in dark coat, blue mixture trousers, light lace- up boots nearly worn out, blue necktie, and low hard billycock hat. Gave the name of THOMAS JOHNSON, and stated he had an uncle living at Bosses Farm, Slienstone, Staffordshire. The other is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, light brown hair, pro- portionate build, high cheek bones, no whiskers or moustache; di eased in a suit of dirty brown clothes and black billycock hat, and carried a drover's long stick in his hand. They were seen driving the Bix beasts in the direction of Wolver- hampton on the morning of 15th instant, where they were recovered. Information to Mr. Supt. June 20 The bay Mare, advertised in Police Gazette of 17 th instant, as stolen from Bolton, has been found.— Bow- street, June 20. Stolen from Cleeve Hill Common, since 27th ultimo :— 3 yearling Oxen, and 3 yearling Heifers, some of a grizzle colour, blue mark on forehead, with ' J. R.' burnt in the horns, in good condition. Information to Mr. Superintendent Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, June 15. Stolen from a field at Ketley, on the night of 4th instant: — a strawberry roan Mare, about 15 hands high, 7 years old, thick set, dark legs, in good condition ; and a dark grey ditto, 4 years old, in fair condition, 16 hands high, white forehead; both are shod till round. Information at the Police Station, Wellington, Shropshire.— Bow- street, June 13. Stolen from a field at Kempton, Clunbury, Salop, between 6th and 7th instant:— 3 fat wether Sheep, of the Shropshire Down Breed, pitch marked with a star on the rump. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Caswell, Church Stretton, or to Sergeant Williams, Bishop's Castle, Salop.— Bow- street, June 13. Found at Basingstoke, at 9 a. m. on 8th instant, supposed stolen :— a light iron grey mare Cob, about 14 hands high, rather long mane, in fair condition, and apparently about 12 or 14 yrs. old, standing in a costermonger- looking sort of spring Cart, rather old, brown with red lines, double steps, each side a piece of iron recently put on off shaft for the back catch, and near wheel cap missing, rather old Harness, brass mounted'with crown on top of saddle pad, straight bit on bridle and a hemp halter over the bridle ; two old Coats and a grey Horse- cloth in cart, and on a card in one of the pockets was an address ' William Barber, successor to the late W. Monk, Licensed Horse Slaughterer, North Street, Whitecha- pel Road,' and on another ' R. W. Pipe, Greendisburgh, cooper, sieve and basket maker.' At 5 a. m. the same morn- ing a costermonger- looking man was seen coming from the direction of London, about half- a- mile out of Basingstoke, with this Mare and Cart; he stated he had driven from near London, and that the Mare was tired ; he cook her out of the harness and tied her legs in a lane to feed. He is 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, rather foil face, rather stou build ; dressed in dark coat, old tight- fitting cord trousers, and coster's cap - with lappets turned up. Information to Head Constable Hibberd, Basingstoke, Hampshire.— Bow street, June 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Charged with obtaining Money, at Tucbridge Wells, by false pretences :— ALF. RUSSELL, a dealer in hay, straw, and cattle, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, very red complexion, hair and whiskers, freckled face, a native of Halton, near Burwash, Sussex, and well known at Tenterden and Romney Marsh. Information to Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- st., June 20. Stolen at Newton, between 2 p m. and 11 p. m. 12th inst.: — a brown cloth Overcoat, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, buttons covered with brown cloth ; a black cloth Jacket, waterproof linings, two pockets outside and one inside left breast; and a pair of white moleskin Trousers, all part worn. By a man, a carter, a native of Dudley, Staffordshire, where he is well known at Coal Pits, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, no whiskers or mous- tache ; dfeased i i a shabby black cloth suit, and lace- up boots ; his wife is living at present with a Mrs. Tomlinson, in a house in the outskirts of Dudley. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.- June 20. - Bow- street, ELIZABETH BOULTON, advertised in Police Gazette, of 17th instant, has been arrested, and the stolen property recovered.— Bow- street, June 20. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Worcester, on morning of 18th instant:— a piir of man's light watertight Boots, with double tongues, and roughly nailed in the heels; a pair of small man's elastic- side Boots, newly soled and heeled ; three red striped cotton shirts ; a white cotton Guernsey ; and a frail Basket. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, small brown moustache, and no whis- kers ; dressed in black coat, cord trousers, and deerstalker hat. Information to Sergeant Sommers, City Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, June 20. Description of HENRY DAVISON, late of Pentre Moch, Northop, Flintshire, a collier's labourer, charged by warrant with stealing on 9th instant, a Half Sovereign ; a Half Crown ; a Sixpenny Piece ; a Threepenny Piece; and two Penny Pieces :— 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair, and slender build ; dressed iu a blue cotton jacket, white moleskin trousers, Militia boots, and belongs to the Flintshire Militia. Information to the Superintendent, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, June 20. Absconded from Grantham, on 12th instant, charged on warrant with stealing £ 1 in Money, a brown Overcoat with brown velvet collar, pockets at sides, hard black felt billy Hat, an iron Chisel, and 3 shoemaker's paring Knives :— ALFRED GREE. N, alias SMITH, a tramping shoemaker, 33 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, usually wears a moustache, but shaved that before leaving, grey prominent eyes, sallow complexion, and has a fleshy substance on back of left hand, about the size of a small nut; was dressed, when he left, in the stolen coat andlmt, blue cloth trousers, and Wellington boots, and carried a flag basket. He is the same person as advertised in the Police Gazette of 25th March and 6th April last. Informa- tion to Chief Constable Pemberton, Guildhall, Grantham.— Bow- street, June 17. Absconded from Portsmouth, charged with embezzlement: — ARTHUR JAMES WHITE, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, grey eyes ( large and slightly bloodshot), small light moustache, no whiskers, thick red lips, small slit iu bottom one, medium build, when walking he usually has his left hand in trousers pocket, and carries his head forward ; drssed in black hard felt hat, black diagonal cloth frock ( or Oxford) coat, vest, and tibusers, black necktie with coral pin, white collar with long points, and low shoes. Had a gold keyless Watch, and gold Albert, large and small link pattern, and was carrying a small black leather bag. Has been booKing clerk on the railway, and was last seen at the Bishopstoke Station. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Central Police Station, Portsmouth, - who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 17, Description of an officers servant, belonging to the Royal Marines, Forton, who deserted at 6 a. m., 13th instant, charged with stealing from his masters quarters :— a £ 6 Bank of England Note, No, 17733 or 17739; about £ 2 in Gold and Silver Money ; a silver Wimbledon crystal Watch, a short gold Albert attached; a gentleman's plain gold Ring, blood stone ; 3 sets gold Studs, one set cats eyes, orescent cut out [ of the base, one set bee hive shape, 1 set chased on both sides ; a pair of forget- me- not sleeve Linksa dark brown tweed Suit; a pair of dark grey tweed Trousers, with a slight red mixture ; a blu?*^ rge coat, with flat block buttons ; a pair of low Shoes, worn atsoles ; a razor Case, marked 11,' and hole at one end. He is 24 years of age, 5 feet 61 inches high, sharp grey eyes, light brown hair, fresh complexion, square shoulders; dressed in the stolen clothes, which were made for an officer 6 feet high, very low crowned black pot hat. He is a native of Triuity, Blackburn, Lancaster, and speaks with a north country accent and slowly. Information to Superintendent Cheyney, Hants Constabulary Station, Gosport.— Bow- street, June 17. Stolen during the night of 13th instant, at the Cottage Farm, Duxfard, Cambs :— 2 hen Fowls, one light coloured, the other dark. Also from a hedge- row at the same place :— a blue and white cotton Shirt, haa been mended between the shoulders ; a blue and white check packing Handkerchief; a pair of grey worsted Socks, men's size ; 2 blue worsted Stockings, one larger than the other, and an odd pair of white cotton Stock- ings. Supposed by two tramps, one about 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in dark jacket, and round black hat.
