Notice.— It ig requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information Bhould be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor tRUSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ef Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, nbove, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. < 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by fee persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without I he apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Absconded from Nailsworth, charged with unlawfully wounding a Constable, wiih intent to do him grevious bodily harm, at Nymphsfield, on 26th instant:— JOHN MALPASS, labourer of Nailsworth, 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 J inches high, very light hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, rather stout built. Also HENRY BIGWELL, labourer, of Naiisworth, 20 years of age, 5 feet 52 inches high, dark brown hair, light blue eyes, fair complexion, anchor tattooed on left arm, boot and cross on right arm. both previously convicted of felony. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Stockport, about 9 p. m., on the 28th ult.:— u silver lever Watch No. 2466, no makers name, dial cracked, little finger broken, has the name ' Abraham Longaon' inside case, written very fine. Information to Chief Constable Stables, Stockport..— How- street, June 1 In custody, charged with larceny from the person, on Harpenden Race Course, on 27th ultimo :— JOHN FRITH, of 38, Scotland- road, Liverpool, 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, proportionate build, oval face, can read and write, a protestant, single, a cigar maker, and born in Manchester. Information to Mr. Supt. Isgate, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, June I. Committed for trial at the next Taunton Quarter Sessions, charged with stealing from the persons at the Bath Races :— JOSEPH MOSS, alias ROBERTS, alias EDWARDS, about 60 years of age, 5 feet i inch high, grey eyes, grey hair and beard cut close, bald on top of head, slight build, nose dis- figured by disease, lost all teeth, scars on top of head and left side of mouth, rather deaf ; dressed in brown mixture suit, soft bowler hat; has been convicted at Lincoln, Birmingham, and Nottingham, is very well known as a travelling thief to the police in the North of Eogland. Stolen from the person in Langholm, Dumfries, on 25th instant:— a single- cased silver English lever Watch, maker Picken, Melbourne- place, Edinburgh, No. supposed 6602, engine- turned cases, silver dial, gold chaptered, steel hands, with sunk seconds; had attached a piece of brass Chain, about 2 inches long, with a piece of black cotton Boot- lace for a guard, and two ordinary brass Keys. Stolen from the person about 9' 30 p. m., on 28th instant: — a silver Boston lever Watch, white dial, No. on case 1659, No. on movement 4080, the minute hand has a small piece broken off the end. Also a gold patent lever Watch, medium size, gold dial, supposed gold numerals, engraved case,' patent lever' stamped on inside case. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fearnside, Town Hall, Pontefract.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen on the night of 21st instant, from the person in Preston :— a silver lever Watch, maker E. Fritson, Liverpool, No. 1302. Stolen from the person in Preston, on 20th instant:— a silver lever Watch, maker J. Bennett, Preston, dial disfigured near the second hand, minute hand slightly bent. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from the person in a railway carriage, at Cuck- field, on 21s'. instant a pair of Militia Boots, two pairs of worsted Socks, two Shirts, and one Handkerchief, No. 655. By HARRY, alias STIFFEN PRYKE, native of Lavenliam, labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, stout build, and bowlegged ; dressed in dark clothes, and has been working in London for the last eight or ten years in cab yards. Known to the Police in Holborn and Islington. Information to Mr. Supt. Chapman, Boxford, or to Sergeant Marsh, Lavenham, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his pprehension.— Bow- street, May 27. JOHN WILSON, labourer, 27 years of age, 5 feet 2i ins. high, very daik brown hair, dark eyes and complexion, slight dark moustache, and whiskers about a month's growth; dressed in a brown mixture suit, nearly new, black hard felt hat, blucher boots ; belongs to the 2nd' West York Militia. Information to Mr. Supt. Nicholson, North Riding Constabu- lary, Leyburn.— Bow- street, June 1. Stolen by means of Burglary at Scarning, on the night of 29th ultimo :— a lady's silver lever Watch, No. 4367; a common watch Key ; 10s. to 12s. in silver, of which 2 florins and 2 sixpences forms a, portion; about 21b. cooked salt Beef; lib. cooked Pork ; a loaf of home made Bread; and small plum Cake ; supposed by a tall thin young man, light com- plexion, whiskers round his chin, inclined to be sandy; dressed in pepper and salt suit, hard black hat, lace- up boots : seen at Swaffham at 8 a. m. on the 30th ultimo, eating beef and bread, taken from a bundle in a red handkerchief in his possession, he was seen again at noon same date, at East Winch, going in the direction of Lynn or Downham. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 9.30 aryl 10.30 a. m. on 24_ tli instant, at Mallbrook, Chetton :— a silver hunting Watch, minute hand off, ' J. Roper' scratched inside the case with a knife, steel Chain, attached with Key at the end ; a silver twisted Chain with Locket, attached, and some Hair inside the Locket; two Neckties, one spotted ; two scarf Pins, one horse- shoe pattern, the other a trowel pattern ; a light grey mixture cloth Vest; and 6s. in Silver— a' Half- crown, a Two- shilling Piece, a Shilling, and a Sixpence. Prison, Stafford, until 7th instant, charged with picking pockets, at Stone, on 30th ultimo :— DANIEL COLLINS, late of Holloway's lodging- hcuse, Bilston- street, Wolverhampton, hawker, 42 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, brown tuft on chin, no whiskers or moustache, grey eyes, medium build, prominent forehead, several small scars thereon, sharp features, sharp pointed nose; dressed in old brown tweed jacket and vest, old brown cord trousers, old lace- up boots, soft sammy bat, old light- coloured cotton muffler. THOMAS QUINN, late of George's- road, Manchester, labourer, 53 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, sallow oinplexion, black hair, small black moustache, no whiskers, hazel eyes, slender build, nail second right finger recently broken ; native of Manchester, and single ; dressed in old black faded reefer jacket, large black patch on each shoulder, old brown trousers, light- coloured vest, dirty, old elastic- side boots, and hard billy hat. Stolen on 30th ultimo, from the person of a lady at Newark Market- place :— a £ b Bank of England Note, No. 10. By a man, between 30 and 40 years of age, about b feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout built1, light complexion, light liair, no whiskers or moustache, a little light sandy hair on end of BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen, by means of burglary, during the night of 30th ultimo, from Diddington Hall a black leather Jewel Case, containing a gold scarf Pin, claw pattern, pearl in centre of head ; a Do. with brown bee in head ; a Do., round top with blue tracing or network on head ; 3 seta of gold Studs— a plain set, one with blue turquoise stones, and a small plain set; a set of white pear' Studs ; 2 gold Pencil- cases ; 5 gold Rings— one with large diamonds, two of them signet Rings with letters ' C. L. A.'; a silver Cyprus Coin; also a gold Geneva Watch with a gold Albert Chain, and gold Locket and small silver Coins attached, with lady's portrait inside Locket ; 2 brass Candlesticks, dragon pattern ; a shallow silver Sugar Bason, ribbed and flowered, and a pair of gent's button Boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardlev, Acock's Green, Birmingham.— Bow- street, June 3. Remanded till 8th instant, on a charge of burglary : — JAMES MUNRO, drover, 66 years of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, grey hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, whiskers all round face ; aressed in brown cloth coat, light grey vest, dark cord trousers, woollen shirt, light and grey stripes, woollen drawers, and red woollen scarf, blue cap, turned up, with brown velvet; is an Irishman, and has been in the army. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Ellergill, Otley, Yorkshire, on the night of 26th ultimo :— a black Mare, about 144 hands high, rather long hair at bottom of legs, has a white patch under- neath tail, and can only be seen by lifting the tail up; shod all round, and about 6 years old. Also from a field on Leeds Road, Otley, Yorkshire :— a brown Mare, 15i hands high, near fetlock little swoollen, little white on fetlock joint, shod all round, 12 years old, and in foal. Also from the same field on the Leeds Road, between 9 p. m. on 30tli, and 9 p. m. on 31st ultimo : a chestnut Mare, white legs, white star on forehead, long mane, looks like a brood mare, very good goer, 15 hands 1 inch high, and 12 years old. Information to Mr. Supt. Birkill, West Riding Constabulary, Otley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 3. Seolen from a field at Saighter, Chester, during the night of 31st ultimo :— an iron grey Cart Mare, of the Welsh breed, about 15 hands 1 or 2 ins high, dark head and muzzle, black points, forefeet trowing up ringbones, one shoe off the hind far foot, and a little lame when trotting on a hard road. Information to Mr. Supt. Plant, County Constabulary, Broxton, Cheshire.— Bow- st., June 3. Further information respecting the dark brown cart Mare, advertised in Police Gazette of 20th ultimo, stolen from Allaston Mesne, Lydney :— she is 19 years old, 14 or 15 hands high, star on forehead, hair rubbed off rump, hind hoof rather long and peculiar shaped, and in rather low condition. Suspicion is attached to a gipsey, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark swarthy complexion ; dressed in a dirty cord suit, with hard hat; had with him an old covered cart, rather narrow between the wheels. A gipsey answering this description was seen about a fortnight ago, travelling through Herefordshire with tin ware ; he then had in his possession a mare, answering the description of the one stolen. Infor- formation to Mr. Supt. McRae, Coleford, or to Sergeant Clark, Lydney, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, June 3. The roan Gelding and drab Exmoor Pony, advertised in the Police Gazette of 23rd ultimo, and again on the 30th ult. as stolen from Little Churchill Farm, Broadclyst, Devon, have been recovered.— Bow- street, June 3. Obtained from Tattersall's, by means of a worthless cheque :—' Hermit,' a dark bay, with black points, aged, 15 hands 3 inches high, has been fired on inside of both hocks, scar inside off hind heel. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, June 1. Stolen from a meadow at Dorking, during the night of 25lh ultimo :— a black cait Horse ( recovered), and a brown Mare, 14Jt hands high, with a mark branded on off cheek a little larger than a shilling, slightly springed hocked, and in | good condition, Supposed by two men, of gipsy appearance ; t mm POLICE GAZETTE. KNIGHT, alias SHUTDOWN, advertised in Police Gazette of 27th and 30th ultimo, have been appre- kended.— Bow- street, June 3. Charged on warrant with stealing a Field Glass and a silver Albert Chain, curb pattern, with oval silver Locket attached, engraved and initials ' E. B.' on one side, from his lodgings, at Smethwick, on 23rd ultimo :— THOMAS WAR- BRICK, 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark com- plexion, black hair, cut short, moustache, no whiskers, medium ouild, small mole on cheek, blue mark on bridge of nose, and native of Ashton- under- Lyne; is a clerk, and of military appearance; dressed in black billycock hat, black ribbed cloth coat and trousers, light coloured vest, and lace- up boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Whitehurst, Police Office, West Bromwich, or to Inspector Henton, Police Station, Smeth wick, near Birmingham, who holds the wariant for his arrest, - Bow- street, June 3. Stolen at Old Hill, on 20th ultimo :— an old black c'otli Jacket, velvet collar, pockets on hips and one inside left breast, four black covered buttons down front and two on eich cuff, single breasted, the pocket on left hip has been torn by the bite of a dog and repaired. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches higb, stout build, dark brown hair and moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in dark grey jacket, moleskin trousers, black and white plaid scarf, round hard black felt hat, and elastic- side boots. He stated that he had got a job at the Old Hill Railway Station, as shunter. Has the appearance of an excavator. He said he belonged to Bristol. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston, Brierley Hill, or Inspector Walters, Police Station, Old Hill, near Dudley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, June 1. Absconded from Ipswich, on 29th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 3 5a. in Money : -- GEORGE HOUGHTON, about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, fiesh complexion, very clean looking, brown eyes, very dark hair, inclined to curl, ' G. H.' in blue ink on arms, about 10 stone, and walks erect; dressed when last seen in brown reefing jacket, nearly ne K, brown trousers and vest, and cap, known as deep water cap. Believed that he will try to ship ai a seaman tor America. Information to Chief Constable Russell, Ipswich, Suffolk.— Bo- w- st., June 1. buttons; and a light brown tweed Vest, speckled with red, rown buttons, both but little worn, two tramps, one about 5 ® years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches igh, dark complexion; dressed in soft white felt hat, linen jacket, moleskin trousei- s, and lace- up boots, the uppers cracked, carried a black jacket; the other about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in brown tweed cap, with two peaks, drab slop, dark ribbed trousers, and clogs. Information to Mr. Sapt. Hughes, Holywell, Flintshire.— — Bow- street Ju, ne 1. Remanded to the Cambridge Petty Sessions, for stealing Jewellery from bedrooms, in Cambridge, during 24th ult. : THOMAS SMITH, alias SIMPSON, alias BUCHANAN, 23 yeais of age, 5 feet 5J inches high, dark sallow complexion, black hair, brown, eye?, muscular build, long face, slight scar above left eyebrow, scar from abscess on right jaw, above right knee, and back of left thigh. States he ia a carpenter, joiner, and reporter, and has no fixed residence. Also JOHN FITZGERALD, alias WRIGHT, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6£ inches high, pale complexion, black hair turning grey, brown eyes, muscular build, oval face, scar under right jaw, second finger- nail right hand has been injured. States • ie is a medical student-, and has no fixed residence. They are both well dressed, and are of gentlemanly appear- ance. Had in their possession two white pocket handker- chiefs marked ' F. W. KENDALL, 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, turning grey, very stout, of drunken habits, and fond of low company; dressed in dark grey suit, and high hat; a schoolmaster, good address, and last residence Ossett Grammar School. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Airton, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 30. Absconded from Hertford, on 29th ultimo:— WILLIAM FROST, of Leighton Buzzard, a watchmaker, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hail; was dressed in a light tweed coat and vest, brown trousers, and hard felt hat; charged with larceny as bailee. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow street, May 30. Stolen from a stable at Aldershot, on 27th instant: silver Geneva lever 3i plate hunting Watch, white dial, steel hands and seconds, and ' F. M.' engraved on outside of case. Supposed by a groom, 18 to 20 years of age, about 5 ft. 5 ins. high, fair complexion, very slight moustache, and few light hairs on chin ; dressed in a dark check tweed stable jacket, tight- fitting dark tweed trousers, with a piece of leather let in at the bottom of each leg, and hard black felt hat. Infor- mation to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, May 30. Charged with embezzling £ 15 :— ALBERT WILLIAM MASTERS alias W. A. WILLIAMS, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, small moustache and whiskers, rather large mouth, slit in upper lip ; dressed in dark brown home made suit, trimmed with military braid. He was married about 8 years ago at Pontypridd, has relatives living near Shepton Mall « t, Somerset. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somerset, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from a bedroom at the South End Hotel, £ 1 10s, in Gold. By a man 20 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high fair complexion, dark brown hair, small thin brown mous- tache ; dressed in a black cloth I'bsd coat, dark tweed trousers, small low- crowned felt hat, button boots, and brown kid gloves. He stated that he was a reporter, but it is thought he is probably a travelling hotel thief, and the same man who committed offences at Stratford- upon- Avon, on 2nd instant, and at Melton Mowbray on 18th instant. Also stolen from a house in JAllhallows Line, Bedford, on 22nd instant; a double cased silver hunting verge Watch, maker's name H. Harvey, London, No. 2837. Informa- tion to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, May 27. Stolen from Wymondham, about 19th instant:— a navvy'i white Slop, nearly new, chain stitched, has a string round bottom to draw it tight; a navvy's double- breasted , white cotton cord Vest, nearly new, no sleeves, buttons on right side have been removed; a sailor's white Slop, with blue cuffs, collar has been taken off; a blue and white check silk Neckerchief, and about 8 yards of blue and white check cottor Shirting. Supposed by a navvy, a native of Upwell, Norfolk, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair and eyes, no whiskers or moustache, scarred face, also has a scar on right side of upper lip, supposed to have been caused by a burn or scald ; dressed in black monkey jacket, moleskin trousers, brown cap with ear laps, and heavy lace boots. Information to Inspector Cator, Wymondham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, May 27. Charged with stealing several articles of clothing, re- covered :— a man, about 40 years of age, 5 ftet 4i inches high, medium build, has very thick black bushy whiskers, chin shaved, having been with the militia during training, tattooed on right forearm ; dressed in dark clothes, hard felt hat. Supposed to belong to London. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Prothero, Carnarvon.— Bow- st., May 27. forfnation to the Head Constable, City Police, Worcester.— Bow- street, June 1.
