CONTAINING TIte substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of am aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Th Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6617 MONDAY, MAY 30, 1881. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should he made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ef Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War OfEiie Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, > '. above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the propeity, without ln « apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded from Nailsworth, charged with unlawfully wounding a Constable, with intent to do him grevious bodily harm, at Ny mphsfield, on 26thinstant:— JOHN MALPASS, labourer of Nailsworth, 23 years of age, 5 feet. 5£ inches high, very light hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, rather stout built. Also HENRY BIGWELL, labourer, of Nailsworth, years of ase 5 feet 5} inches high, dark brown hair, light blue • eyes, fair complexion, anchor tattooed on left arm, boot and cross on right arm. both previously convicted of felony. Information to Mr. Supt. Ford, Dursley, Gloucestershire, who hold warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, May 30, About 11 ' 30 a. m. on 17th instant, the body of a female child was found floating in the Rochdale Canal, Minshull- etreet, Manchester, apparently from 4 to 6 months eld ; it had on ono white woollen sock, ribbed top and hand knit, a white calico napkin, and a fine white cotton shirt. An inquest was held on 18th instant, when a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. At 8 a. m. 17th instant, there was found in a hen- cote in Herbert- street, Cheetham, a child's scarlet French merino frock, embroidered with black wool, and a white cotton shirt, which are supposed to be a portion of the clothing of the murdered child. The several articles of clothing - are now at the Detective Office, Town Hall, where inspection is invited. £ 50 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers; and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious par- don to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such information as shall lead to a like result, Information at the Detective Department, Town Hall, or at the Fairfield Street, or any other Police Station.— Bov,- street, May 25. Absconded from Smallthorne, charged with unlawfully wounding on 15th inst. :— THOS. CAVANAGH, a labourer, ' 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, slender build, walks elect, a native ofHenley- in- Arden, Warwickshire; dressed in a dark cap with peak, blue necktie, dark jacket and moleskin trousers. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 25. a guard, and two ordinary brass Keys. Information t ® the Chief Constable, Dumfries, County Buildings.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from the person about 9' 30 p. m., on 28th instant: — a silver Boston lever Watch, white dial, No. on case 1659, No. on movement 4080, the minute hand has a small piece broken off the end. Also a gold patent lever Watch, medium size, gold dial, supposed gold numerals, engraved case,' patent lever' stamped on inside case. Information to Mr. Superintendent Fearnside, Town Hall, Pontefract.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen on the night of 21st instant, from the person in Preston :— a silver lever Watch, maker E. Fritson, Liverpool, No. 1302. Stolen from the person in Preston, on 20th instant:— a silver lever Watch, maker J. Bennett, Preston, dial disfigured near the second hand, minute hand slightly bent. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen at the Lewes Races, on the afternoon of 21st inst.: — a silver lever Watch, maker's name Shrivell, Brighton. Information to Mr. Supt. Osbon, Lewes, East Sussex— Bow- street, May 27. Stolen from the person in a railway carriage, at Cuck- field, on 21s', instant :— a pair of Militia Boots, two pairs of worsted Socks, two Shirts, and one Handkerchief, No. 655. By HARRY, alias STIFFEN PRYKE, native of Lavenham, labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, stout build, and bowlegged ; dressed in dark clothes, and has been working in London for the last eight or ten years in cab yards. Known to the Police in Holborn and Islington. Information to Mr. Supt. Chapman, Boxford, or to Sergeant Marsh, Lavenham, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 27. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the" person in Langholm, Dumfries, on 25th instanta single- cased silver English lever Watch, maker Picken, Melbourne- place, Edinburgh, No. supposed 6602, engine- turned cases, silver dial, gold chaptered, steel bands, with sunk seconds; had attached a piece of brass Chain, about 2 inches long, with a piece of black cotton Boot- lace for BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Wanted, charged with housebreaking at Martin Hus- singtre, near Worcester, on 28th instant, and stealing there- from, 1 blue rough Overcoat, pockets torn a little on insides ; 2 table Cloths ; 3 white Aprons, bands and buttons at sides ; 1 fine white Shirt; 6 coloured Shirts ; 1 pair of elastic- side Boots, worn a little at toes ; 1 white handled Knife ; 1 Guano Bag ; 1 round hard hat ; 3 lb. of Bacon ; 1 oz. of Tea : — a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, small whiskers inclined to be sandy, freckled face ; dressed in black jacket, dark vest, cord trousers, billycock hat, and lace- up boots. Was hawking needles and pins. Stated that he belonged to Redditch. Information to Deputy Chief Constable ChecKetts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 9.30 and 10.30 a. m. on 24th instant, at Mallbrook, Chetton :— a silver hunting Watch, minute hand off, ' J. Roper' scratched inside the case with a knife, steel Chain, attached with Key at the end ; a silver twisted Chain with Locket, attached, and some Hair inside the Locket; two Neckties, one spotted ; two scarf Pins, one horse- shoe pattern, the other a trowel pattern ; a light grey mixture cloth Vest; and 6s. in Silver— a Half- crown, a Two- shilling Piece, a Shilling, and a Sixpence. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Galliers, Bridgnorth, Salop.— Bow- street, May 27. Stolen between 15th and 18th instant, by means of breaking into the parish church of Caverswall:— a black silk Stole, lined with red silk. Information to Mr. Supt. McWilliams, Police Office, Longton, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., May 25. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Burton- on- Trent on 24th instant :— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, chased on back, ' E. S. H.' on back, No. 6720; a massive 18 carat gold Ring, large size ; a gold mourning Ring, black enamelled square top, with pearls round, and hair in centre, ' Elizabeth Wilson' inscribed inside; a very old- fashioned gold King, oval top, with small pearls, a few of which have fallen out, a plait of hair in centre, ' Ann Whieldon ' engraved inside ; an old- fashioned gold Ring, with four small pearls, and a larger one in centre ; a gold twisted Ring, with hair twisted all round. By a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, small sandy whiskers, stout build, broad shoulders, and round face ; dressed in cord or light tweed trousers, brown cloth jacket, with pockets on sides, cloth or felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Hurston, burton- on- Treut.— Bow- street, May 25. Solen by means of burglary at Harborne during night of 23rd instant :— a silver cream Jug, small size, embossed; a pair of gilt Candlesticks, with filagree ornament, set with coloured glass ; a pair of polished brass Candlestick, inkstand bottom, modern German pattern; a polished brass paper Knife, peifurated blade and ivory handle ; a plated cruet Stand, with amethyst setting on handle. Information to Mr. Superintandent Whitehurst, Police Office, West Bromwiuh, Staffordshire, or Sergeant Kavanagh, Harborne, near Bir- mingham.— Bow- street, May 25. old, about 15fc hands high, in good condition ; and a chestnut cart Horse Colt, rising 3 years old, about 14£ hands high, long tail, in moderate condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Galliers, County Police Office, Bridgnorth, Salop.— Bow- st., May 30. Stolen from a field at Balsall, on 16th instant r- a red Cow, G years old, white blaze down face, short horns, horn on off' side droops down, in calf: a red Heifer, in calf, white blaze down face ; a red roan Heifer, in calf, all three are branded in one of the fore hoofs with the letters ' J. N.' In- formation to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Acocks Green, near Bir- mingham, or to Inspector Carbis, Solihull, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from Llanbedr, Llanenddwyn, on 25th instant:— a light bay Pony, about 13| hands high, aged, small white star on forehead, fore hoofs very flat, hair worn off under the pad on near side, about the size of a hand, two white spots above the tail, in fair condition. Information to P. C. Roberts, Dyffryn, or to Sergeant [ Ashton, Barmouth, Merio- nethshire.— Bow- street, May 30. Wanted for stealing a light bay Mare [( recovered) from a field at Tybuvn, near Birmingham, at 9 a. m. on 27th instant: — a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high ; dressed in dark reefer jacket, pepper- and- salt- coloured trousers and vest, hard round hat, boots well blackened, lame in right leg, carries a walking- stick, and of respectable appearance. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Gallaway, Police Station, Aston Park, Birmingham.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from Little Churchill Farm, Broadclyst, Devon- on 13th instant:— a roan Gelding, aged, about 15J hands high, white hind feet, a brown spot on each side of ribs, and a switch tail; and very dark drab ( would be now black, as it was changing its coat) Exmore horse Pony, aged, broad across the back, white star in forehead, white hind feet, branded VL. C.' under saddle on near side, and near ' fore knee broken. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from Watersfield on the night of 9th ultimo :— a brown Gelding, aged, light Russian breed, about 14 hands high, with long mane and tail, brown legs, has been wrung on the withers, and the hair cut off near it. JOSEPH MITCHELL alias GRITT, is committed to take his trial at the Quarter Sessions, at Horsham, on 1st July, for stealing the horse. Information to Mr. Supt. Kemmish, West Sussex Constabulary, Petworth.— Bow- st., May 30. Description of a man who hired a Pony and Gig, from a livery stable in Colchester, on the morning of 21st instant, to return the same evening, but has not yet been heard of :— about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers; dressed in black cloth coat, vest, and trousers, flat top felt hat, yellow and black necktie, spring- side boots, and has a generally shabby appearance ; belongs to the Army Reserve, and has a stiff erect carriage. Pony : — bay mare, aged, hands high, sheding its coat, small white spot on the back under saddle, and a small black spot below ihe right ear, rather long mane and tail, a good trotter. The Gig a small one, painted blue picked out with white ( fine), back part covered with morocco leather, two blue cloth cushions, the left shaft spliced, and turns in a little, dash board split; Harness black, brass mounted. Information to Chief Constable Mercer, Colchester, Essex. — Bow- street, May 25. Stolen during night of 14th instant, or morning of 15th, from a field at Clee Hill :— a dark brown Cob Mare, about 14 hands high, black legs. Information to Mr. Supt. Caswell, Police Station, Church Stretton, or Police Constable Smith, Clee Hill. — Bow- street, May 25. Stolen from Walsall on 20th instant :— a very dark Bay Mare, 9 years old,' P' marked on one of the fore feet, saddle marks on back, 15 hands high, blind at near eye. Information to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- itreet, May 25. Slaughtered and stolen from a farm at Norton Canes between 8 a. m. and 8 p. m. on 18th instant:— a yearling Sheep, skin, head, and entrails were left in a wood close to. Supposed by three men who were lurking about, and one of them was seen sharpening a knife with a long blade close to the farm on the day iu question, one middle aged, sandy whiskers; dressed iu light coloured coat, flannel or moleskin trousers. Auother appeared younger, dark complexion ; dressed in dark clothes and hat,. The other da- k complexion ; dressed in dirty dark clothes. Supposed colliers, and were heard to say they came from near Bilston. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Grupie, HedneBford, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 25. Stolen from Bronhyddon during night of 5th instant:— a light coloured he Donkey, aged, iu low condition, blind left eye, castrated. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to Police Constable Breese, Llansaintffraid, Montgomery- shire.— Bow- st., May 25. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Draycott, Claverley, duri>. g the night ot 18th instant :— a dappled grey Mare, rising 6 years LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Wanted, on warrant, for embezzlement:— STEPHEN H. KENDALL, 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, turning grey, very stout, of drunken habits, and fond of low company; dressed in dark grey suit, and high hat; a schoolmaster, good 30 POLICE GAZETTE. May 16 address, and last residence Ossett Grammar School. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Airton, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 30. Absconded from Hertford, on 29th ultimo:— WILLIAM FROST, of Leighton Buzzard, a watchmaker, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hail; was dressed in a light tweed coat and vest, brown trousers, and hard felt hat; charged with larceny as bailee. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow street, May 30. Stolen from a stable at Aldershot, on 27th instant:— a silver Geneva lever 3i plate hunting Watch, white dial, steel hands and seconds, and ' F. M.' engraved on outside of case. Supposed by a groom, 18 to 20 years of age, about 5 ft. 5 ins. high, fair complexion, very slight moustache, and few light hairs on chin ; dressed in a dark check tweed stable jacket, tight- fitting dark tweed trousers, with a piece of leather let in at the bottom of each leg, and hard black felt hat. Infor- mation to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, May 30. Charged with embezzling £ 15 :— ALBERT WILLIAM MASTERS alias W. A. WILLIAMS, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, small moustache and whiskers, rather large mouth, slit in upper lip ; dressed in dark brown home made suit, trimmed with military braid. He was married about 8 years ago at Pontypridd, has relativfs living near Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Information to Mr. Super- intendent Jeffs, North Pethertan, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 30. Stolen from a bedroom at the South End Hotel, £ 7 10s. in Gold. By a man 20 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, small thin brown mous- tache ; dressed in a black cloth '- b^ d coat, dark tweed trousers, smalllow crowned felt hat, button boots, and brown kid gloves. He stated that he was a reporter, but it is thought he is probably a travelling hotel thief, and the same man who committed offences at Stratford- upon- Avon, on 2nd instant, and at Melton Mowbray on 18th instant. Also stolen from a house in | Allhallows Lane, Bedford, on 22nd instant; a double cased silver hunting verge Watch, maker's name H. Harvey, London, No. 2837. Informa- tion to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, May 27. Stolen from Wymondham, about 19th instant:— a navvy's white Slop, nearly new, chain stitched, has a string round bottom to draw it tight; a navvy's double- breasted . white cotton cord Vest, nearly new, no sleeves, buttons on right side have been removed ; a sailor's white Slop, with blue cuffs, collar has been taken off; a blue and white check silk Neckerchief, and about 8 yards of blue and white check cottop Shirting. Supposed by a navvy, a native of Upwell, Norfolk, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair and eyes, no whiskers or moustache, scarred face, also has a scar on right side of upper lip, supposed to have been caused by a burn or scald ; dressed in black monkey jacket, moleskin trousers, brown cap with ear laps, and heavy lace boots. Information to Inspector Cator, Wymondham; Norfolk.— Bow- street, May 27. Charged on warrant with stealing Timber at Pensnett, on 22nd ultimo : — EDWARD THOMAS REYNOLDS, alias COBBLER, 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, dark bro'vn hair and eyes, stout build, has a very large head and an impediment in his speech ; he is a native of Pensnett and an ironworker; dressed in grey cloth jacket, moleskin trousers ^ nd vest, hard felt hat, and clogs. WM. KNIGHT alias SHOTDOWN, 20 years of age, 5 ft. 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, crossed and weak, slender build, talks down his nose, and of dirty appearance ; dressed in black cloth jacket, mole- skin trousers and vest, hard felt hat, and clogs ; he is a native of Pensnett, and a bricklayer's labourer. The above- named men are also wanted on a charge of house- breaking at Wall Heath, and have been convicted of larceny. Information to Mr. Supt. Woollaston, Brierley Hill. Stafford- shire, who holds the warrant for their arrest.— Bow- street, May 27. Charged with stealing several articles of clothing, re- covered :— a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 41 inches high, medium build, has very thick black bushy whiskers, chin shaved, having been with the militia during training, tattooed on right forearm ; dressed in dark clothes, hard felt hat. Supposed to belong to London. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Prothero, Carnarvon.— Bow- st., May 27. ^ Charged with stealing two registered Letters, containing a Bank of England Note for £ 100, ' 7 | B 73304 Leeds 1877'; a Bank Warrant for £ 318 15s. 0d., drawn on Dimsdale and Co., and payable to the a/ c of the ' Friends Provident Insti- tution, Bradford', this Note has been stopped in London ; a Cheque for £ 9 4s. 3d., drawn in Lo T don and payable to Mackfie, Liverpool, which has been found paid in Bradford ; a Cheque for £ 9 13s., drawn by A. Coventry, on Manchester Bank, payable to J. J. Diamond, and crossed ' Dinsdale and Co.', and one similarly drawn and similarly payable for £ 3 13s. 2d. :— JAMES LESTER, telegraphist, 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light hair and complexion, no whiskers or moustache ; wears a set of false teeth ; dressed in dark cloth clothes. Information to Borough Police Office, Town Hall, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 25. Stolen from Bearpark, on 20th instant :— a pair of heavy made lace- up Boots, nearly new, and 28s. in Money. By JOHN PERRY or PARRY, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, blue coal scar right side of forehead, cut scar left eyebrow, blue coal mark across nose, grey eyes, dark brown hair, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, round face, coal miner, native of Wrexham, North Wales, but has been in the North for several years; dressed in blue coat and vest, bound with black braid, grey checked trousers, white muffler tied in sailor's knot, grey cap with peak in front, and tassel on top, and stolen boots; has been three times convicted of larceny, on indictment, and was only released from H. M. Prison, Durham, about 6 weeks ago, after completing a term of 18 months imprisonment. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunn, County Police Office, Durham.— Bow- street, May 25. Absconded from Bridport on 10th instant, charged on a warrant with larceny as bailee of a silver Watcli :— a man, 35 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, daik complexion, rather stoutly built, bald on top of head, and stammers when Bpeaking; dressed rather shab- bily, dark grey coat, snuff- coloured double- breasted vest, greyish trousers, rather long, turned up at bottom, wears no stockings, black and white small plaid cotton shirt, black round stiff felt hat. He is a tramping watch and clock mak< r, lodges at low beer- houses, and is a native of Ashby- de- la- Zouch, He was at Salisbury co the 18, th instant, going towards London. Information to Mr. Supt.
