Notice.— It ii requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is giren, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offenoe charged, and an attested copy thereof, tegether with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded en War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, » • labove, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Stolen from the person at Dumbarton:— a gold lever Watch, No. 088, with inscription ' Presented to Mr. Robert Buchanan, by a few friends, in recognition of his long and unwearied labours in the cause sf Temperance, in Dumbarton, especially in connection with the young, 1st January, 1869 attached was a gold Albert Guard, round link pattern ; r. nd a gold Seal, with red stone, ' 54/ 6d.' scratched on the stone. Information to Mr. Supt. Cummings, Dumbarton.— Bow- street, May 23. Charged with highway robbery at Hednisford, on 16th instant:— THOMAS OAKEY, alias DARKEY, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stout [ make, tawney coloured complexion, like a gipsy, very black hair, inclined to curl, no whiskers or moustache, well featured, good teeth, and. frecklea on back of hands ; wore a short double- breasted pilot reefer jacket, light cord trousers, and cap with tuft on top, and is a miner. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Grupie, Hednisford, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, May 20. Stolen from the person, at Machynlleth, on 16th instant: — a light or newly washtd jean Purse, with blue top to draw to fasten it, made rather long, containing two .£ 10 Back of England Notes, the right end was slightly slit in centre, and £\ in Gold. Also stolen from the person on same date and place - a brown Purse, containing from £ 8 to £) in Gold. Also stolen from the peison, on same date and place :— a Bank Receipt, National Provincial Bank of England, Limited, Machynlleth, No. 30370, for £ 10, in favour of David Morgan, Llanrddol, dated 16th May, 1881. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other wise, Copies of thi3 Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of ihe " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. Information to P. C. Williams, Machynlleth, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, > 1lay 20. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 11' 30 a. m, on 17th instant, the body of a female child was found floating in the Rochdale Canal, Minshull- street, Manchester, apparently from 4 to 6 months old ; it had on one white woollen sock, ribbed top and hand knit, a white calico napkin, and a fine white cotton shirt. An inquest was held on 18th instant, when a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. At 8 a. m. 17th instant, there was found in a hen- cote in Herbert- street, Cheetham, a child's scarlet French merino frock, embroidered with black wool, and a white cotton shirt, which are supposed to be a portion of the clothing of the murdered child. The several articles of clothing are now at the Detective Office, Town Hall, where inspection is invited. £ 50 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information and evidence as Bhall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious par don to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such information as Bhall lead to a like result. Information at the Detective Department, Town Hall, or at the Fairfield Street, or any other Police Station.— Bow- street, May 25. Absconded from Smallthorne, charged with unlawfully wounding on 15th inst.:— THOS. CAVANAGH, a labourer, 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, gTey eyes, slender build, walks eiect, a native of Henley- in- Arden, Warwickshire ; dressed in a dark cap with peak, blue necktie, dark jacket and moleskin trousers. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Miy 25. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between 15th and 18th instant, by means < f breaking into the parish church of Caverswall:— a black silk Stole, lined with red silk. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Burton- on- Trent, on 24th instant :— a lady's gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, chased on back, ' E. S. H.' on back, No. 6720 ; a massive 18 carat gold Ring, large size; a gold mourning Ring, black enamelled square top, with pearls round, and hair in centre, ' Elizabeth Wilson' inscribed inside; a very old- fabhioned gold Ring, oval top, with small pearls, a few of which have fallen out, a plait of bair in centre, ' Ann Whieldon' engraved inside ; an old- fashioned gold Ring, with four small pearls, and a larger one in centre ; a gold twisted Ring, with hair twisted all round. By a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, small sandy whiskers, stout build, broad shoulders, and round face; dressed in cord or light tweed trousers, brown cloth jacket, with pockets on . Solen by means of burglary at Harborne during night ot 23rd instant:— a silver cream Jug, small size, embossed ; a pair of gilt Candlesticks, with filagree ornament, set with coloured glass; a pair of polished brass Candlestick, inkstand bottom, modern German pattern; a polished brass paper Knife, peiforated blade and ivory handle; a plated cruet Stand, with amethyst setting on handle. Information to Mr. Superintendent Whitehurst, Police Office, West Broniwiob, Staffordshire, or Sergeant Kavanagh, Harborne, near Bir mingham.— Bow- street, May 2~>. Stolon by means of burglary at Ipswich, between 2 and 3 a. m. on 29th nit. :— a small silver verge Watch, maker's name ' James Baker, Woodbridge, No. 17279,' engraved on plate inside. Information to Chief Constable Russell, Ipswich. - Bow- street, May 23. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Hednesford, during the night of 19th instant:— two gold wedding Rings; a 22- ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Burton, on 21st instant:— an English silver Lever Watch, No. 66037,' J. H,' scratched on carat King, Bet with a pale violet coloured stone, chipped, a blood- red stone, a green stone, and a diamond about the size of a pin's head; 4 silver Table Spoons; 4 silver Tea Spoons, bearing the imprint of an eagle on the back of handles ; a black Cashmere Shawl, having the fringes cut off; and three- and- a- half yards of fine Flannel. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Grupie, Hednesford, Staffordshire.— Boic- street, May 23. Between 7 p. m. on 15th, and 7 p. m. on 16th instant, Fulford Church was broken into and stolen therein :— a new Suiplice, marked in red on collar loop, ' Vanhiem and Wheeler, London'; a white linen Communion Cloth, marked faintly in one corner ' Fulford Church'; about half a bottle of Communion Wine; and 10s. 7fd. in Silver and Coppers. Stolen during night of 14th ins1 ant, or mor. icg of loth, from a field at Clee Hill:— a dark brown Cob Mare, about 14 hands high, black legs. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen from Walsall on 20th instant:— a very dark Bay Mare, 9 years old, ' P' marked on one of tha fore feet, saddle marks on back, 15 hands high, blind at near eye. Information to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- ti reel. May 25. Slaughtered and stolen from a farm at Norton Canes between 8 a. m. and 8 p. m. on 18th instant:— a yearling Sheep, skin, head, and entrails were left in a wood close to. Supposed by three men who were lurking about, and one of them was seen sharpening a knife with a long blade close to the farm on the day in question, one middle aged, sandy whiskers; dressed in light coloured coat, flannel or moleskin trousers. Another appeared younger, dark complexion ; dressed in dark clothes and hat. The other da'k complexiot ; dressed in dirty dark clothes. Supposed colliers, and were heard to say they came from near Bilston. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhills, or to Sergeant Grupie, Hednesford, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 25. Stolen from a meadow at Lowestoft, during the night of 22nd instant: an iron grey horse Pony, about 13 hands high, hog mane, tail cut short, wall eyed, a small piece of hair off left hip, 7 years old. Information to Inspector Jeffiies, Police Station, Lowestoft, Suffolk.— Bow- street, May 25. Stolen from Bronhyddon during night of 5th instant: j a light coloured he Donkey, aged, in low condition, blind left eye, castrated. Information to Mr. Supt. Stolen from Little Church, Hill Farm, Broadclyst, on 13th instant:— a roan Gelding, aged, about 15J hands high, white hind feet, a brown spot on each side of ribs, and a switch taiL And a very dark drab Exmoor horse Pony, aged, broad across the back, white star in forehead, white bind feet, branded ' L C.' under saddle on near side, and near fore knee broken. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter' - Bow- st., May 23. Found at Gilson, supposed to have been stolen :— a light grey Gelding, aged, 15 hands high, in very poor condition. Absconded on 9th instant, charged on warrant with stealing a Horse from Stourbridge ( since recovered) • WILLIAM HAYES, native of Stourbridge, a labourer, 22 years of age, 6 feet high, stout build, dark complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or beard, full face, and thick lips; dressed in a grey cloth suit and black hard billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Wheeler, Police Office, Stour- bridge, Worcestershire,— Bow- street, May 23. Stolen from a field at Balsall, on the night of 17th inst,; r A." HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of a man who hired a Pony and Gig, from a livery stable in Colchester, on the morning of 21st instant, to return the same evening, but has not yet been heard of :— about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers; dressed in blick cloth coat, vest, and trousers, flat top felt hat, yellow and black Decktie, spring- side boots, and has a generally shabby appearance; belongs to the Army Reserve, and has a sti. i' erect carriage. Pony : — bay mare, aged, lljhands high, sbeding its c^ at, > ruall white spot N5 " the ba. ck" under saddle, and a ft mull ibUcV l> pot. below the right ear, rather long mane and tail, a good, trotter. The Gig a Small one, painted blue picked out with white ( fine), back part covered with morocco leather, two blue cloth cushions, the left shaft spliced, and turns in a little, darli board split ; Harness black, brass mounted. Information to Chief Constable Mercer, Colchester, Ensex. — Bow- street, May 25. Description of a man whose apprehension is sought for burglary :— 20^ years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh com- plexion, brown hair, dark eyes, brown scar on right side of abdomen ; dress ( supposed)— brawn stable jacket, fustian trousers, Bedford cord vest, water- tight boots, cork hat, covered with brown cloth, stitched at sides, the proceeds of the burglary; is a bricklayer, and also a deserter from the 49th Regiment of Foot stationed at Hounslow. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metro- politan Police, May 23. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Deddington, oil 16th instant :— a men's brown cloth Overcoat, red plaid lining, one inside breast pocket, two outside pockets at the hips, and brown covered buttons; a black cloth body Coat, man's size, one inside breast pocket, two eutside pockets at the hips, and black buttons; a grey cloth ' boely Coat, man's size, buttons I covered with same material as the coat; a grey cloth Vest, single- breasted, man's size ; a short cotton Jacket, drab colour, man's size, lined with coarse woollen check lining ; 6 pairs of Trousers, man's size, one black cloth, one grey cloth, one light cloth, one d » rk cloth, one plaid cloth, lined with black at the bottom of legs, and red rouud the waist; one cord, quite new, lined with white coarse lining. Information to Inspector Wyatt, County Police Station, Deddington, Oxon.— Bow- street, May 20. POLICE GAZETTE. May 25 — a red Cow, 6 years old, white star on forehead, short horns, horn on off side droops down, in calf ; a red Heifer, in calf, white blaze down the face ; a red roan Heifer, in calf ; all in good condition and half- bred Herefords. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Acock's- green, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, May 23. Stolen from Worplesdon- common, daring the night of 4th instant:— an aged grey Mare, 13 or 14 hands high, heavy in foal, and broken winded ; a blue roan Filly, 2 years old, small star in forehead ; a dark brown yearling horse Col large star in forehead ; and a light bay filly Colt, a little white on face and hind fetlocks. £ 1 reward will be paid for the recovery of the horses and conviction of the thieves. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Con^ stabulary, Guildford.— Bow- st., May 20. Absconded from Ipswich on 4th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a white Mare, since recovered :— JOHN BURROWS, alias JOHN BARRINGTON BUTCHER, is well known throughout the counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridge and Essex, as ' PUG NOSE JACK,' about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, travels to fairs and markets with horse- dealers, & c. Information to Chief Constable Russell, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 20. Stolen from a field at Allaston Mesne, near Lydney during the night of 16th instant:— a dark brown Mare, aged 14 or 15 hands high, white star on forehead, hair rubbed off rump, supposed near side, and in rather low condition. Sup- posed by gipsies. Information to Mr. Supt. McRae, Cole ford, or to Sergeant Clark, Police Station, Lydney, Glou- cestershire.— Bow- street, May 20. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Charged with stealing two registered Letters, containing a Rank of England Note for £ 100, ' 7 | B 73304 Leeds 1877'; a Bank Warrant for £ 318 15s. 0d., drawn on Dimsdale and Co, and payable to the a/ c of the ' Friends Provident Insti- tution, Bradford', this Note has been stopped in London ; a Cheque lor £ 9 4s. 3d., drawn in London and payable to Mackfie, Liverpool, which haB been found paid in Bradford ; a Cheque for £ i> 13s., drawn by A. Coventry, on Manchester Bank, payable to J. J. Diamond, and crossed ' Dinsdale and Co/, and one similarly drawn and similarly payable for £ 3 IBs. 2i. :— JAMES LESTER, telegraphist, 22 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 ieches high, light hair and complexion, no whiskers or moustache; wears a set of false teeth ; dressed in dark oloth clothes. Information to Borough Police Office, Town Hall, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 25. Stolen from Bearpark, on 20th instant :— a pair of heavy made lace- up Boots, nearly aew, and 28s. in Money. By JOHN PERRY or PARRY, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, blue coal acar right side of forehead, cut scar left eyebrow, blue coal mark across nose, grey eyes, dark brown hair, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, round face, ooal miner, native of Wrexham, North Wales, but has been in the North for several years; dressed in blue coat and vest, bound yjfith black braid, grey checked trousers, white muffler tied in sailor's knot, grey cap with peak in front, and tassel on top, and stolen boots; has been three times convicted of larceny, oa indictment, and was only released from H. M. Prison, Durham, about 6 weeks ago, after completing a term of 18 months imprisonment. Information to Mr. Supt. Dunn, County Police Office, Durham.— Bow- street, May 25. Absconded from Bridport on 10th instant, charged on a warrant with larceny as bailee of a silver Watch :— a man, 35 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, dark complexion, rather stoutly built, bald on top of head, and stammers when speaking ; dressed rather shab- bily, dark grey coat, snuff- coloured double- breasted vest, greyish trousers, rather long, turned up at bottom, wears no stockings, black and white small plaid cotton shirt, black round stiff felt hat. He is a tramping watch and clock maker, lodges at low beer- houses, and is a native of Ashby- de- la- Zouch. He was at Salisbury on the 18th instant, going towards London. Information to Mr. Supt. MacHale, Bea- minster, Dorsetshire.— Bow- street, May 25. Absconded from Colchester, on 22nd instant:— a draper's assistant, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light hair and complexion ; dressed when last seen in black low- crowned felt hat, black cloth jacket and vest, brown shaded cloth trousers, side- spring boots, and had a silver watch with steel chain; charged with stealing :—£ 42 in Gold and Silver; 10s. in Postage Stamps; London and County Bank Cheque Book to order ; a black Chesterfield Overcoat, with twill lining; a box of gent's reversible Neckties, light flowered and spotted;* " a ditto ditto, dark flowered and spotted ; a box of cream and white silk Handkerchiefs, pink and blue borders, about l- in. wide ; a do. do., plain borders ; a ditto, white figured and spotted; a ditto, pink and blue, white striped borders; a ditto ditto, three stripes cardinal round border; a ditto assorted blue and gold, pompadour check silk; a ditto ditto, pink and gold, pompadour check Bilk; two packets of gent's half Hose, with dark stripe ; four pairs of gent's calf Gloves, stitched backs ; a box of gent's scarf Pins, silver and gilt; sets of gent's gilt front Studs; ladies white merino Vests, low neck and short sleeves; a packet of gent's white Vests; a ditto old Silver Coins; a small gold Locket, heart- shaped, with cross of turquoise and pearls, one pearl missing ; a gold mourning Ring, with hair; a chased gold Ring; a gold Keeper ( buckle) ; a gold Ring, with red and white stones; a fancy dress Ring; a ditto, pink and white stones ; a silver lever Watch; a silver Geneva Watch ; and a box Cigars. It is supposed that he will endeavour to leave the country for the continent or America. Information to Chief Constable Mercer, Colchester, Essex.— Bow- street, May 25. Stolen at Melton Mowbray, on| 18th inst. :— a silver verge Watch, the bow has been broken off, and a split ring put through ; a gold Albert with gold Locket attached, ' W. Lowe,' engraved on Locket; a lady's gold Watch; a 9- carat lady's gold Chain ; a lady's 18- carat gold Ring, with 3 red stones and 4 or 5 white ones, also 2 five shilling Pieces in a wash leather bag. By a man, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 0 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, supposed light moustache, no whiskers, very slight build, rather thin face ; dressed in dai* k short coat and vest, trousers cf lighter colour, black stiff billy hat, nearly new, buttoned boots, with small pointed toe- caps; wore a ring suppposed with light stone ; carried a knotted walkingstick, mounted with silver. He lodged at the house during the night, and stated he came from Liverpool. Information to Mr. Superintendent [ Goodman, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, May 23. Absconded from Kidderminster, charged with stealing four fowls and three Ducks, on 17th instant THOMAS SWEENEY, about 32 ye4rs of age, 5 feet 7J inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, brown hair, clean shaved ; dressed in drab or brown jacket, blue guernsey vest, moleskin trousers, blue check shirt, and round black hard hat; cut mark on one eye, supposed left eye, a native of Ireland, a labourer, hawks mussels at low publie- houses; has recently lived at Wallsall and Dudley. Information to Mr. Supt. Wheeler, Police Office, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, who holds a warrant for his appreheusien.— Bow- timet May 23. Stolen at Brightmet about 5 p. m. on 18th instant:— a pair of man's black ribbed cloth Troupers, spotted with lime, with a tab on waist to hang them up by. By a man about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, no whiskers or moustache; dressed " in old dark cloth coat, torn a\ left shoulder, the stolen trousers, cloth cap with peak, and clogs mended with leather at the bottom. He left a pair of old torn and dirty plaid trousers behind him. Information to Mr. Supt Holland, County Polioe Office, Bolton, Lanca- shire.— Bow- streei, May 23. Stolen at Skipton on 16th instant:— a bay Mare, 14 hands high, hoof of foreleg split near heel, very little hair on tail, in fair condition ; also a strong set of brass mounted Harness, and a low Scotch dog cart, painted dark colour ( recovered).
