The substance of all Informations received in cases of Fdeny and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen ( foods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are lcnown but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Th Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as psssibh, of Properly, that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6601 FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1881 Notice.— It it requested that « I1 commnnioations for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or seni/ ing the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, L mden, W. C. * t* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should bo made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mHSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ef Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by fee persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." %. Charged at Bedford with stealing a Purse and 7s. 3jd.> from the person, at Cardington, on 18th instant:— a man, 35 years of age ( IOOKS older), born at Liverpool, but of no fixed residence, a hawker, wears a moustache, whiskers shaved off, large scar from burn inside and outside of right thigh, scar on right groin, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, turning grey, proportionate build, oval face, and 5 feet 35 inche3 high. Information to Mr. Supt. Kennedy, County Police Station, Bedford.— Bow- street, April 20. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Charged with murdering her child 1 year and 9 months old, by drowning it in Ellesmere, Salop, on the night of 16th inst.:— a woman, 24 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, very stout, loose fig ire, fat face, fresh complexion ; dressed in a brown winsey dress, § mall black jacket, small white straw hat with black ribbon on it; all her clothing is very shabby, and her boots are hard worn ; has been in farm service. Was, immediately before and after the murder, with a man about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, email dark whiskers, dark or grey clothes, small hard hat; a farm labourer. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- st., April 19. FORGERY. Absconded on 19 h instant, from the Infantry Barracks, Fulford, charged on warrant with forgery: — Sergeant FRANCIS HANCOCK, 14th Reg. of Foot, 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark blue eyes, light brown hair, florid complexion, and smart appearance ; dressed in regimentals, 14th Regiment of Foot, a native of Birmingham. Informa- tion to Inspector Far ah, East Riding Constabulary, Escrick, Yorkshire.— Bow street, Ap- il 22. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Charged on a warrant with assaulting a young woman, near Guildford, and st aling her Purse and 7^. 6d. : JOSEPH VARNFIELD, better known as JOE FARN- FIELD, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, few whiskers, slight moustache; dressed in a brown coat with velvet collar, corded trousers, and an old black hard felt hat; works in brickyards ; was transferred from the Guildford Militia to the West Kent Militia in April, 1879. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guild- ford.— Bow- street. April 20. Charged with highway robbery, at Reddish, on 13th instant :— two men, one a striker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, full features, dark brown hair, slight moustache, whiskers shaved off, and deeply pockpitted ; dressed in black cloth shooting coat and vest, white moleskin trousers, billycock hat, and clogs; is supposed to have gone to Barrow or Newton- le- Willows, where he has been working for some time, but has been stopped for a week. The other a striker, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high,[ rather stout build, light brown hair, small moustache ; dressed in . brown mixture coat, dirty moleskin trousers, cloth cap, with BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 11 p. m. 20th instant, and 7' 15 a. m. 21st instant, at Derby :— a gold musical and repeating Watch, gold dial, black figures, has black ribbon and two gold Seals, engraved ' J. Most of the Watches have name ' Bancroft, Derby,' on works, are of good quality, having been m ule more than 20 years. Information to Chief Constable Delacombe, Derby.— Bow- street, April 22. Stolen by means of burglary, at Need wood, in Rolleston, on 16th instant:— an old- fashioned silver hunting Watch, double case, ' F. H.' on outside case ; 4 silver tea Spoons, marked ' S. P.'; and a gold Brooch, with stone in centre. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Harston, Burton- on- Trent, or to Sergeant Walker, Tutbury, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., April 20. Between 11 p. m. on 19tb, and 8 a. m. on 2lst ultimo, the shop of Daniel Thomas, of Llandissilio, Pembroke, was entered, and stolen therefrom :— 2 or 3 Half- Sovereigns ; a Tin containing £ 3 in Silver; another | Tin containing £ 1 in Sixpences, and a quantity of Threepenny and Fourpenny Pieces; 2 old shot Bags, one containing £ 2, and the other containing £ 1 10s. in bronze Coins. By JOHN GRIFFITHS, alias JACK PANTYCADNO, about 21 years of age, ftjfcet 4 or 5 inches high, stout built, full face, sallow complexion, no whiskers, small veiy light moustache; was dressed in dark blue cloth monkey jacket and vest, dark cloth trousers, all about half worn, light coloured muffler, with a blue pattern, nearly new laced boots, with small nails in soles. He was traced to Ledbury, Herefordshire, where he worked as a labourer on a new railway, is a native of Llandisailio, speaks English and Welsh, and has been usually employed on rail- way work. Information to P. C. 35 Davies, Llandissilio, Clynderwen, R. S. O., who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion, or to Deputy Chief Constable Clarke, Pembroke.— Bow- street, April 20. Stolen by housebreaking on the 13th instant, between 1 and 6 p. m., at Wadhurst, Sussex ;— a lady's silver Geneva Watch, with seconds hand, maker McNarney,, had a piece of white tape and Key attached ; two plain gold wedding Rings, very old and thin, and cracked ; a boy's low- crowned hard felt Hat; a black Shawl, with silk fringe, nearly new ; about 20s. in Silver ; a brown leather money Purse, with four compartments. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 6 and 11.30 p. m. 15th instant, at Newport- road, Middlesbosough :— From 80 to 90 gold and silver lever and Geneva ladies and gentlemen's Watches. 6 long gold Guards, secret licks, square, snake, and jack patterns. 20 to 25 gold Alberts, 4 curbs, and- remainder fancy patterns. 50 to 60 gold Wedding Rings, 22 carat, all marked ' W. S.' 20 silver Alberts, and 20 long silver Guards. 110 pairs of gold Ear- riog3, 9 carat, of various patterns. 24 silver Bracelets, 3 of which are inlaid with gold, remainder various patterns. 50 to 00 silver Lockets, of various patterns. 100 ladies' fancy gold gem Rings, 9, 15 and 18 carat. 20 Gent's gold signet Rings, 9 and 15 carat, 2 of which are set with imitation diamonds, all marked ' J. C.' 2 garnet Brooches, one cluster and the other horse- shoe pattern. A garnet Pin, horse- shoe pattern. 2 pairs of garnet Ear- rings, 9 carat. A Case, containing 9 silver scarf Slides, 6 of which are set with imitation diamonds, 2 fancy pattern, and 1 buckle pattern. 12 silver Necklets, broad patterns, 1 of whick Las a true lover's knot iu centre, very bright. A pair of small gold Ear- rings, buttercup patters. 60 ladies' and gent's silver Rings, of various patterns, some marked ' Mizpah' and some ' Regard,' some buck le pattern, some set with garnet, others with turquoise, and remainder with coral. A set of coloured gold Ear- rings and Brooch to match, plate pattern. The following are the numbers and description of some of the stolen Watches :— 2 ladies gold Watches, Nos. 14763 and 14764. 8 ladies Geneva Watches, small size, Nos. 11174 to, 11181, all silver. 1 lady's silver hunting Watch, No. 10575. 8 gent's ditto, Nos. 11204, 11205, 11206, 10612, 10613, 10614, 10615, 10616. 6 open- face gent's Genevas, silver, Nos. 11265 to 11270. Other silver Genevas, Nos. 14871, 14872, 14873, 14789, 14790, 14791, 14792, 14793, 14794, 10617,10618. A gold demi- half hunter, No. 60, 684. A gold Watch, gold dial, centre seconds, French and English times and day of month on dial. Several ladies' demi Hunters, with dials painted with different coloured rings, resembling archery targets. A silver English lever stop Watch ; a silver lever Watch, No. 23452; a lady's Geneva keyless Watch, No. 78274 ; a ditto, ditto, silver dome and dial, No. 26495 ; 3 gent's silver Genevas, metal dome, Noa. 19911, 19912, 19913; a silver Hunter, No. 80155 ; a silver dome Hunter, No. 32976 ; a silver keyless gent's Geneva, No. 17,320 ; a ditto ditto, No. 27759; a ditto ditto, with crystal glass, No. 322,034; a lady's silver Lever, silver dial, No. 24057. A dozen gold Seals and Keys, some have crouched lions on them. 40 to 50 Lockets, Birmingham make, common gold, under 9 carat. £ 100 reward will be paid by Mr. Watkin on recovery of the property and conviction of the thief or thieves, or in propor- tion to the amount recovered. A small iron crowbar, a chisel, and a newish felt hat, with ' J. Barritt, Stockton,' stamped inside were left in the shop. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrcugh.— Bow- st., April 19. Stolen by means of burglary, at West Witton, on 14th instant, from a grocer's shop :— 3 £ 5 Notes, two Bank of Eogland, and oue the Yorkshire B^ jvking Company ; £ 5 or £ 6 in Gold ; £ 2 or £ 3 in Copper ; some 3d. an4 4d. Pieces ; also a gardener's old pruning Knife, buck handle, brass plate on end. By 2 men, one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, sallow complexion, thin face, sullen and determined look, light brown hair, small sandy whiskers down side of face, ginger moustache ; dressed in dark Scotch tweed jacket, trousers of same material, dark tweed cloth cap with peak. The other about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, full face, dark brown hair cut short, slight dark whiskers down side of face; dressed ia drab tweed jacket, light cord or tweed trousers, ragged at bottoms, soft felt hat; had a small bundle tied up in a red and white handkerchief. Both wore good boots, one pair had two rows of round- headed nails round edge, aud three rows up centre with ten nails iu each row, and heel plate, the other pair nailed as above with mudds instead of round- headed nails. Stolen by means of burglary, at 51, Grand Parade, Eastbourne, Sussex, duritig the night of 11th instant:— a gold Watch ; a gentleman's grey cloth ( or tweed) small check lounging Suit, the buttons on the tro. useis have the name of ' Smith. 28, East Parade, Leeds/ stamped on them ; a linen Shirt and Collar, marked ' W. Sheepshank'; a pair of 2 POLICE GAZETTE. April 20 gent's stout made lace- up Boots, with brass eyelet holes and hooks ; a pair of merino Socks ; a bunch of Keys ; lis. 2d, in Money ; a pair of black jet sleeve Links. The Watch found pawned at Brighton, by a man who gave the name of J. W. MINCHLEY, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, no beard or moustache, slight figure, of gentlemanly appearance ; dressed in small check tweed suit, low round crowned felt hat, kid gloves; an old pair of boots was left in the house. Information to Mr. Supt Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary, Eastbourne, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, April 19. Stolen by means of burglary, at Chiddingstone, Kent, during the night of 14th instant :—£ 35 in Gold, £ 7 in Silver, a japan Cashbox containing 3 post office saving's bank Books, an I. O. U. for £ 25, an Insurance Paper, and some post office Documents. Information to Mr. Supt. Barnes, Police Court, Tonbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, April 19. Charged with embezzlement:— JOHN ST. CLAIR, late booking clerk in employ of London and South Western Rail- way Company, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 74 inches liigh, pale complexion, dark eyes, black whiskers and moustache, thick lips; dressed in shabby black suit, high silk hat. May be fouud at land league, meetings, Ireland. Information to Mr. Supt. Hoskinson, Police Office, Waterloo Station, or to Detective Sergeant Massey, Police Station, Kennington- road, London, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 20. SIDNEY SEARLE, advertised in Police Gazette of 3rd January, 1881, as wanted at Bingham, has not yet been apprehended :— he is charged on warrant with stealing a lady's silver Geneva Watch, no seconds hand, engine- turned case, minute and hour hands are spade pattern ; a blue cloth double- breasted great Coat, lined with black serge alpaca, black buttons, velvet collar, two side pockets, one left breast pocket, one ticket pocket, ail outside ; a black Handkerchief; a black Walking- stick ; and a blue striped linen Shirt, He is a tailor, native of Bromley, Kent, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 7i inches high, dark hair, no hair on face, rather deaf, long arms, large wart outside left hand, walks with head down; dressed in black worsted coat, bound with black braid, grey check waistcoat, with drab bone buttons, grey trousers, elastic- side newly rfvetted soled boots, with heel plates, one of which is cracked in centre, low round black felt hat; has, tied in black handkerchief, a large Book, called ' Boy's Own Paper,' bound green covers, pair of old black trousers, and pair of mauve knitted mitts. Information to Mr. Supt. Somerset, Bkgham, Notts.— Bow- street, April 20. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Farnworth, about 4p. m 12th instant:— a dark grey plaid Shawl, puce stripe ; a black dress Bodice, trimmed black velvet round the bottom, and black velvet covered buttons down the front; a brown stuff Skirt, trimmed with black kilting round the bottom, and far worn. Supposed by a boy, about 15 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair ; dressed in blue cloth monkey jacket, fustian trousers, hard felt billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- st., April 19. Absconded from Middlesbrough- on- Tees, on 13th instant, charged with larceny of 4 Watches, three recovered, the fourth a silver lever Watch, No. 13511, gold figures, and flowered dial, is not recovered :— GEORGE LIMB, alias LAMB, alias WHEATLEY, or ROGERS, 32 to 35 years of age, 6 feet high, proportionate fijure, fresh complexion, round face, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, cut out on chin end, thick lips, drops his head when walking, rather in- kneed ; is said to be a native of Nottingham, and to have served in several police forces, railway police, and in the Army; at times he professes to be a clock and watch cleaner; dressed in a pair of white moleskin trousers, dark coat, and billycock hat, but generally dresses in dark clothes. Associates with prostitutes. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, who holds a warrant for his arrest, and wil pay all expenses on his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 19. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Fosseway Common, on 6th instant:— a bay Cob, 8 years old, about 15 hands high, hog mane, short tail, white hind legs, in good condition. Also stolen from same place, on same date :— a roan Horse, about 13 hands high, in low condition, has had large knees. Information to Mr. Supt. Harston, Police Office, Burton- on Trent, or to Sergeant Pearson, Police Station, Whittington, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 22. Stolen from a field at Mollington, on the night of 16th instant:— a chesnut mare Pony, in good; condition, 12 hands high, 7 years old, white blaze on forehead, hind fetlocks white, and very light mane and tail. Information to Mr. Supt. Hinds, Shipton- on- Stour, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, April 22. m. on 18th instant. atReigate :— a Horse, Cart, and Harness. By a man, 25 to 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 to 7 ins. high; dr< ssed respectably, and had the appearance of a stableman. The horse is a bay mare cob, black points, 13 hands 2 inches high, thick set, steps high, in good condition, a little wind galls in front fetlock joints, aged 9 years ; the cart a light spring, painted blue ground, picked out with yellow str pes, no dash board ; silver mounted harness. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Rogers, Redhill, Surrey .- Bow- street, April 20. Pound at Kenilworth, on 8th inst., supposed stolen: — a bay Cob, aged, about 15 hands high, hind fetlocks white, black mane, tail cut short, in good condition, and hogged mane; and a roan- coloured Pony, about 14 hands high, aged, in very low condition, and very large knees. Information to Mr. Supt. Frankton, Constabulary Station, Warwick.— Bow- street, April 20. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen, about 15th instant, 4 Sheep Skins, from an out- building at Eeqair Gawr Farm, near Drwsynant, an? l after- wards sold by a man 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, brown hair and eyes, dark complexion, supposed sun- burnt, light- brown or sandy whiskers, chin shaved ; dressed in dark faded cloth coat and trouserB, hard black high crowned billycock hat, and an old pair of shoes turning up at the toes, and cut down. Information to Inspector Jones, Police Station, Dolgelley, Merionethshire.— Bow- street, April 22. Charged with embezzling various sums of Money belong- ing to the Court ' William Tell' Foresters Society in Bir- mingham, of which he was the Secretary: — WILLIAM REEVES, 60 years of age, 6 feet 1 or 2 inches high, very stout, large flat feet, bad walker, no moustache or whiskers, wears billy on chin ; a carpenter. Has a married daughter, living at 88, High- street, Deptford, named Evans. Infor- mation to Detective Supt. Robinson, Birmingham.— Bow- street, April 22. Stolen on 14th instant, from the Havelock Temperance Hotel, Sidcup, Kent:— 3 Brooches— 1 plain gold, 1 do. with turquoise and sapphire, and 1 a portion of elephant's tusk, in- laid with gold, and flowers carved in eentre; 3 gold Rings— 1 lady's small plain, set pearls and forget- me- nots, 1 old wed- ding, and 1 gent's, set onyx. By a man 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, dark hair and whiskers ( small), no beard or moustache, sallow complexion, a very peculiar cast in left eye, and squints very much when speak- ing, and appears to have lost all teeth in upper jaw, except one, which is prominent; dressed in black suit and overcoat, velvet collar, crimson necktie, and soft felt hat. He is wanted for several larcenies in the Metropolis, takes lodgings at coffee- houses, & c. States he is a clerk or auditor on some railway ; stays two or three days, then absconds with jewellery, & e. ; has given name of ' COWEN,' ' FRANCIS,' and ' CARLTON.' Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 22. He goes about the country villages collected watches to clean and repair, and promises to take them home on a certain date, then absconds, taking the watches with him.
