No. 6588 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1881 Notice•— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear tbe Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that HI information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, tegether with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in tbe POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of tbe reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it i> payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or • coorapanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of tbe offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wisfij Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, See., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary, INFORMATIONS. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Further information respecting burglary at Moston, Salop, advertised in Police Gazette of 14th instant:— also stolen a pair silver sugar Tongs, have been broken at bow and pieced ; 2 silver salt Spoons, all marked ' C.'; 1 trowel- pattern butter Knife, with pearl handle ; 1 pickle Fork, 4 or 5 prongs, bone handle, two latter electro- plated, and not marked. Information to Mr. Supt. Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Owen, Wem, Salop.— Bow- street, March 23. Stolen by means of burglary, at Goldstone Bank, Market Drayton, Salop, on the night of 11th instant:— between 30 and 40 hen's Eggs ; 1 Loaf and 2 Half- loaves of very brown Bread; ± lb. mixed Tea, wrapped in paper with ' Richard Billington, Wholesale and Family Tea and Coffee Salesman, Market Drayton,' upon it; a pair of new calico Drawers, with tape shoulder straps, two linen but'ons on band of waist, and one tuck at bottom of legs, made to fit a girl about 11 years of age. Information to Mr. Supt. Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Merricks, Market Drayton, Salop.— Bow- street, March 21. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, on 11th instant, at Tetburv : - a dark ribbed cloth Vest, and a new pair of Boots ( the Boots since recovered). By a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in grey cloth jacket and trousers, hard bowler hat, and boots with watertight tongue, toecaps, and tips on heels. He inquired the way to Wottonbassett. Information to Mr. Supt. Ford, Dursley, or to Sergeant Munday, Tetbury, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, March 21. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded, charged with the murder of her illegitimate child by drowning, at Bromley, Kent, on 14th instant :— a woman 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, dark eyes, small black mole on face; dressed in black mourning skirt, flounces trimmed with crape, black jacket, and hat, turned up at sides, trimmed crape, and black feather. Likely to be found among soldiers, obtaining a living by prostitution. Well known to police at Gosport, and has been addressing letters to a Corporal Watson, the Albion, Harper - street, Bedford. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, March 23. Furthur information respecting the murderous assult on the game keepers, on the Moor Estate, Clifford, near Hay, Herefordshire :— GEORGE COOK, one of the poachers, has been apprehended at Swansea, and ANTHONY WHITNEY, has also been apprehended at Glastonbury, Somersetshire, Whitney is the man advertised in Police Gazette of 23rd ultimo, as name unknown ; both are reman- ded until 21st instant. THOMAS PARRY who is still at large, is well known at Neath and Swansea, Glamorganshire, in which neighbourhood his photo can be had on application. .£ 50 reward will be paid by E. H. Cheese, Esq., Solicitor, Hay, or by G. H. Page, Esq., Clerk to the Magistrates, Hay, for such information as shall lead to the apprehension of Thomas Parry, and ultimate conviction of the three men concerned in the murderous assault. Information to Mr. Supt. Shead, Weobly, or to Sergeant Ovens, Whitney, who holds the warrant for Thomas Parry, or at any Police Station in the Connty of Hereford,— Bow- street, March 21. Found, about 9.45 a. m., 9th instant, the dead Body of a prematurely- born female Child, in a cigar box, in a brook on Platt Hall estate, Rusholme. The body is very much decom- posed, and appears to have been in the brook sometime. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the afternoon of 8th instant, at Broughton, Bucks :— 3 pairs ot Boots, one man's, two boys'; 2 Vests, one double- breasted, the other single- breasted; 1 child's Frock, 1 white Neckerchief, 1 drab woollen Scarf, 1 hand Saw, 1 clothes Brush, 1 china Image ( a goat), 2 Table Knives, some Bread and Bacon, and a 5- bushel Sack. By two men of the following description :— one is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6£ inches high, very thin, clean face, and very tender feet ; dressed in an old dark frock coat, dark trousers, and soft billycock hat ; the other is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, round features, and sandy whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, and hard felt hat. Sup- posed to belong to the neighbourhood of Kilburn, to which place they were traced. Information to Mr. Supt. Hall Fenny Stratford, or to Inspector Moore, Newport Pagnel, Bucks.— Bow- street, March 21. clasps, containing £ 32 10s. in Gold :— DAVID LEWIS, 37 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light hair, sandy whiskers, stammers very much when speaking ; dressed in old brown velvet jacket, cord trousers, black jimcrow hat; is a tramping labourer, and known to the Police in most of the town in North Wales. Stops in common lodging houses. Was convicted of vagrancy a few months ago iu Carnarvonshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, March 23. Absconded from Machen, on 15th instant,' charged on warrant with embezzling £ 60, the monies of the Lily of the Valley Lodge of the Foresters' Benefit Society of which he was treasurer :— EDWARD PHILLIPS, a carpenter or box maker in tin works, about 32 years of age, about 6 feet 6 ins. high, stout and heavy build, sallow greasy complexion, dark brown or black hair, thin straggling whiskers, slight straggling moustache, small dark hazel eyes, deep bass voice: dressed in bowler hat, and blue pilot overcoat. Information to the Chief Constable of Monmouthshire, Abergavenny, or Inspector Sheppard, County Constabulary, Newport Monmouthshire.— Bow- st., March 23. Absconded from hia lodgings, on 18th instant:— a German watchmaker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, pockpittcd; dressed in long brown overcoat, dark cloth trousers. Charged with stealing a black cloth corded frock Coat, velvet collar, braided down front; a pair shepherd's plaid Trousers, all wool ; a pair light brown tweed Trousers ; a pair of dark tweed Trousers ) a cream- coloured Waistcoat with pearl buttons; a pair lavender kid Gloves ; and several Neckties. Information to Mr. Supt. Rogers, Redhill, Surrey.— Bow- street, March 23. JUNO A. AMANDOUS, advertised in Police Gazette of 18th instant, has been apprehended, and is now in custody. — Bow- street, Ma- ch 23. Further information respecting the larceny at Weeping Cross, during the night of 15th instant, advertised in Police Gazette of 18th instant, under the head of Property stolen, the following articles were also stolen:— five carpenter's Chisels, of various sizes; a 3- inch Square, stamped S. Parker' ; a tenon Saw, stamped on handle ' T. Blanure'; mortice Guage, stamped ' T. Hawkins'. The Brace and Bits have been found pledged at Longton, by JOHN SMITH, a tramping carpenter, 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet ~ or 7 inches high, medium build ; dressed in dark jacket, and hard black felt hat; he will most likely call at houses and buildings in course of erection, under the pretence of seeking work, and offer the stolen articles for sale. Informa- tion to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Sergeant Goodwin, Great Haywood, Stafford, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, March 23. The young woman ( MARY ELLEN RILEY, alias ETHEL MARSHALL, alias FRASER, alias SLATER), advertised in the Police Gazette of 23rd ultimo, charged with stealing Wearing Apparel, at Great Lever, has been apprehended, at Bury, committed to the next Salford Sessions, for that and another similar robbery, the bulk of the stolen clothing has been recovered. Information to Mr. Snpt. Holland, County Police Office, Bolton.— Bow- street March 23. Stolen by means of burglary, at Somerwood Upton Magna, Salop, on the night of 18th instant:— a silver verge Watch, old- fashioned, double row of figures on dial, glass and hinge of [ outer case broken, ' Charles Taylor, High Hatton, Salop,' engraved on inside case ; short double- linked Chain attached; also about 10a. in Money, wooden Box with Primitive Methodist Missions' and ' day spring from on high' printed thereon; and a small quantity of Cheese, Bacon, and Butter. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, Shrewsbury, or to Sergeant Lear, Meole Brace, Salop. — Bow- street, March 21. On night of 16th instant a jeweller's shop, in Worcester was entered and stolen:- 26 silver Thimbles; 17 gold wedding Rings ; 24 dress Rings ; 14 Keepers ; 12 gentlemen's Rings ; 2 silver Geneva Watches; 16 mourning Lockets, gilt, ' In memory of ' ; 12 scarf Pins, gilt; 24 Ear- rings, gilt; and an old watch Case, No. 850. Information to Detective Phillips, City Police, Worcester.— Bow- street, March 18. FORGERY. Absconded, charged on a warrant with forgery and embezzlement:— WM. RITCHIE STEVEN, late of No. 12, Queen Victoria Street, 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, dark hair, whiskers and moustache; dresses well, usually wears turned down collar and high hat. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 20, Old Jewry, E. G.— Metropolitan Police, March 21. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen at Maghull, during the night of 15th instant:— cheanut and white mare Pony, 4 years old, 13 hands, in good condition, mane cut short, has a piece out of one ear, supposed left. Information to Mr. Supt. Jervis, County Police Office, Ormskirk.— Bow- st., March 18. Stolen at West Basham, Norfolk, on the night of 7th or 8th instant:— ten fat hoggett Sheep, the Down and Leicester breed, some marked on the top of shoulders with dot of black paint, others on the off hind quarter with dot of red do Any person giving such information as will lead to the appre hension and conviction ot the offender or offenders shall receive £ 10 reward, on application to Mr. Supt. Murrell Police Station, Walingliam, Norfolk.— Bow- st., March 18. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen about 10 p. m. 11th instant, from the person, at Manchester ;— a gold lever keyless Watch, makers Arnold and LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on 18th instant, fram Graigwen, Llanfair, Montgomeryshire, charged with stealing a Purse with yellow Charged on a warrant with stealing at Bradley, on 17th instant, a silver Geneva Watch, No. 22554, outer case dented: — BENJAMIN SHELDON, alias JEWESS, 29 years ot age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light curly hair parted in centre, light complexion, grey eyes, slender build ; a black- smith, and native of Brierley Hill; dressed in old black cloth acket and vest, dark troasers, double- peaked cap, and strong ace- up boots. Information to Chief Supt. Longden, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 23. Stolen from the ' Flask Inn,' between 9 and 10 p. m. on 19th instant, at Fylingdales :— a blue pilot cloth top Coat, has been recently dyed black, but still has a blue cast, black velvet collar, double breasted, four bone buttons on each side, two pockets outside, laps without flaps, one outside right breast, one inside left breast, lined v ith black lining which has been repaired on the right side. Supposed by 2 men who had the appearance of navvies or labourers, one 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 11 or 6 feet high, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, rather stout build ; dressed in moleskin jacket, vest, and trousers, black hard felt hat. The other 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, pale complexion ; dressed iu blue pilot jacket, white moleskin trousers, and soft billycock hat. Last seen making for Scarboro.' Information to Mr. Supt. Ryder, N. R. Constabulary, Whitby.— Bow- street, March 23. Scolen from an eating house, Salisbury, on the morning of 15th instant:— a blue cloth Overcoat, velvet collar, ' Fleming, tailor, Fisherton Street,' inside of collar; and a black ribbed cloth frock Coat, value £ 5. By a man, who lodged at the house on the night of 14th, and absconded during the night, he is from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, no beard or whiskers ; supposed dressed in black coat and vest, light cloth trousers, elastic- side boots, plain fronts, and black bowler hat, which were stolen from an eating- lio^ se at Trowbridge, Wilts, under similar circumstances. Information to Head Constable Mathews, City Police Station, Salisbury, Wilts.— Bow- street, March 21. Stolen from a shop at Moss Side, between 4 and 5 p. m., 15th instant:— a gent's gold Geneva lever keyless hunter 2 P O L I C E GAZETTE. March 53 " Watch, compensation balance, gold minutes and seconds finger hands, crystal glass, engine- turned cases, No. 14049 ; and a lady's small gold keyless demi- hunter Watch, gold hards, fancy white dial, cases enamelled on front and back, No. 1013. Supposed by a man, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high ; dressed in dark clothes, scarf, and felt hat. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, or at the nearest Police Station— Bow- street, March 21. Stolen between 7 and 9 p. m., on 19th instant, at the Bull Inn, Bulverhythe, Hastings :— a japanned Cash Box, contain- ing about £ 10 in Gold, £ 4 in Silver, and a £ 5 Bank of Eng- land Note. Supposed by three men ; one about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light hair, clean shaved ; dressed in dark brown suit, black billycock, hat, and elastic- side boots Another, about 26 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, light hair and moustache ; dressed in dark suit and black round hard felt hat. And the 3rd about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, and clean shaved ; dressed in dark suit, and black round hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Glenister, Hastings.— Bow- street, March 81: Charged with stealing from an eating- house at Trow- bridge : a brown cloth Overcoat, a dark mixture ditto, a black cloth Vest, a pair of light mixture Trousers, a hard bowler Hat, and a pair of elastic- side Boots with plain fronts: — a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, no beard or whiskers; supposed dressed in the stolen clothes ; he had a new white apron in his possession. He stated he was a painter or polisher, that he had lately been in hospital, and wanted to get to Birmingham. He absconded during the night of 16th instant, and will probably be found lodging at an eating- house or coffee tavern. Information to Mr. Supt White, Wilts Constabulary, Trowbridge.— Bow- street, March, 21. Stolen from a building at Tring, Herts, during the night of 15th instant:— a moulding Plane, marked ' W. S.\ a plough Iron No. 28, a li Chisel, a tenon Saw, a hollow Plane No. 8, a hollow Plane No. 6, a round do. No. 6, a round do. No. 4, a I bead Plane, the above are all marked ' William Sear'; a J bead Plane, a plough Plane, a tenon Saw, a trying Plane, a side filister, a f bead Plane, a § - inch Chisel, an American Brace, a smoothing Plane, a match Plane, an inch Chisel, a band Saw, a carpenter's tool Basket. Supposed by a carpenter who had worked on the building, and is supposed to be making for London. Information to Mr. Supt. Chapman, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.— Bow- street, March 21. Stolen from a passage at the ' Bell Inn,' " Winslow, Bucks, on 17th instant:— an old dark cloth Coat ( since recovered). By a man who was carrying a thin canvas bag, and offering shirt buttons for sale, be is about 45 or 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, medium build ; dressed in dark cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, blue and white stripe shirt, dark soft hat, strong lace- up boots ; had the appearance of a labourer. Information to Mr. Supt. Hall, Fenny Stratford, or Sergeant Bowden, Police Court, Winslow, Bucks.— Bow- street, March 21.. Remanded at the County Police Station, Bourne, until 24th inst., on two charges of Larceny ALFRED GREEN, a tramping shoemaker, 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high without shoes, sallow complexion, grey prominent eyes, dark hair, whiskers, beard and moustache ; dressed in black hard felt hat, black cloth coat, with long laps, and has a patch on rt. side of baek, dk. cloth vest, blue cloth trousers, red and black checked scarf, blue and white striped cotton shirt, white socks, and Wellington boots. States that he is a native of Walsham- le- Willows, Suffolk, and that he worked at Maidstone, from 1871 to 1879, that his wife died there 18 months ago, and since that time he has been tramping the country ; has worked at Laken Heath, Suffolk, for a man named J. Foster, who kept the Bull Inn, and is a shoemaker, also for a man named Smith, at Methwold, in Norfolk, also at Margate and Ramsgate, in Kent. Information to Mr. Supt. Brown, County Police Station, Bourne.— Bow - street, March 21. Stolen in Halifax, between 12.30 a. m. and 1 a. m., on 16th instant, the following Watches and Articles of Jewellery :— a silver Albert with seal in bar ; a dozen Wedding Rings, standard gold ; 20 or 30 Brooches, silver, various patterns; three gold Alberts, ourb pattern, and one belcher pattern; three gold Guards, and other Jewellery. The following are the numbers of some of the Watches :— 19125, silver Geneva, Hall marked; 35175, Ladies' silver Geneva, Hall marked ; 983257, 141, 119843, 47583, 604, 1615, metal and silver dome Genevas; 6085, 5701, silver Levers, flat glasses ; 3546, 3832, silver Genevas, Hall marked; 1546,2270, 9182,96290, 12917, 40639 silver Genevas ; 7640, silver Geneva, flat glass cream- coloured dial; 22405, silver Geneva, flat glass, cream coloured dial; 400, * 8321, 9277, 5992, 1678, cream- coloured dials; 2707, 3952, 2331, 56512, silver levers, compensation balance, white dials ; 9 Genevas with ' Nichol, Geneva,' on dial, steel hands, bull's eye glasses ; a silver lever with a bold dial, and fancy hands; three ladies' Watches with silver dials; the remainder ordinary plain Watches ; about half- a- dozen silver Lockets; about- half- a- dozen pairs of gold Ear- rings, various patterns ; and 21 fancy cased dress Ring, ladies'. By 3 men : — one, a convict on license, No. B 319, 29 years of age, 5 ft. 3 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, corner of- lip has been split, scar on groin and back of neck, slightly pocked- marked, scars over left eye, and on bridge of nose ; dressed in long top pepper- and- salt overcoat, black billy hat, blue and white muffler. This man reported himself at Lon- don on 5th January last, Bradford Borough, Feb. 16th, 1881. Another, a native of Halifax, about 20 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 inches high, and dark complexion. And the other, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, stiff made, full face, dark brown hair, slight moustache ; dressed in dark cloth jacket, dark cord trousers, and white silk muffler, and recently resided at 62, Adelaide street, Man- chester- road, Bradford. Information to Chief Constable Poole, Town Hall, Halifax.— Bow- street, March 18. Stolen from a shop at the Post Office, Preston Candover, between the hours of 10.30 a. m., and 4.30 p. m., on 11th inst.: — a small canvas Bag, containing 2 crossed Cheques— one for £ 6 10s., the other for £ 4, paid to order at Hill and Co.' s Bank, Winchester; also two £ 5 Bank of England Notes, and about £ 4 in Gold. Supposed by a man from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair and moustache, inclined to be little sandy ; dressed in a dark tight- fitting jacket and dark trousers, hard black round crowned hat; carrying a small box about 8 or 9 inches long, and about 5 or 6 inches wide, which was tied up in a red handkerchief with small white spots in it, about the size of peas. Information to Inspector Rapkins, Hants Constabulary, Basingstoke, Hants,— Bow- strut, March 18. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Absconded, charged with fraud :— ROBERT FRANCIS WILLIAM HORSFIELD, a chemist, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, rather light brown hair and moustache, thin bnild ; dressed respectable. Recently filled the office of Dispenser for St. Savior's Union Borough. Likely to be found at billiard rooms or race meetings, in company with a man named Tregale, late of 1 The Flying Horse' public house, Walworth- road, S. E. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, March 23.
