I " CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who ar not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Properly that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6581 MONDAY, MARCH 7, 1881 Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it ia indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not ijow entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at ohce returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. Also stolen from the person at same time and place:— a silver hunting lever Watch, No. 10868. Information to Mr. Supt. Haines, Whitchurch, Salop— Bow- strett, March 2, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen at Long too, by means of burglary, on 6th inat. : — a silver lever hunting Watch, supposed No. 1410, Coventry mate, white dial, steel fingers, sunk seconds, chased back, worn smooth, dent across outer case ; had a gold albert Guard attached, small link pattern, 10- carat stamped, on swivel, but not on links ; a seal appended, stone blue on one side, and yellow on the other; a silver lever Watch, white dial, gilt in centre and figures, sunk seconds, chased back ; a pair of men's elastic- side Boots, square toe caps, have been soled, heeled, small patch on sole of left boot, across toe ; and about 25s„ in Money, Silver and Copper. Information to Mr. Supt. McWilliams, Police Office, Longton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 7. complexion, dark brown hair, little or no whiskers ; dressed in cotton cord trousers, dirty and torn at the bottom of legs, grey cloth coat and vest, hard worn, and an old red fur cap, with ear laps. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. C. Lewis, Llansaintffraid, Montgomeryshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- 1ireet, February 28. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the night of 21st instant:— a blue serge Coat, one inside and one outside breast packet, a ticket pocket with flap, flaps at waist, two buttons to each cuff, but no holes, but a slit black, four hole buttons, sewed on 2 by 2, not crossed, stitched by machine, the coat is of a very large size, on the strap at the back of the vest is ' W. Thomas, Cheltenham'; three silk pocket Hand- kerchiefs, one white, with a deep red border, one with small blue specKs, oval pattern, deep border ; three black silk small ribbed Scarfs ; two long Roman striped silk Scarfs, one with red ground. Information to Mr. Supt. Day, Constabulary Office, Cheltenham.— Bow- st., February 25. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas about 8.45 p. m., on 11th ultimo, Lieutenant Percy Lisle Ormsby Roper, ot the Royal engineers, was killed by a shot from a revolver pistol, fired on the staircase of his quarters, at Brompton Barracks, Chatham, and a coroner's jury have returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' A reward of £ 100 will be paid- by Her Majesty's Government, to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom), who shall* give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or muderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the graut of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any Accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such information as shall lead to a like result. Information to the Chief Constable of Kent, Maidstone, or to Mr. Snpt. Coppinger, Rochester Division, Kent County Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, March 4. One of the men, advertised in Police Gazette t> f 7th ult. j is still at large :— he is about 24 years of age, 5 ft. 7 or 8 ins. high, thin pale face, dark red hair, and a° little sandy hair on chin ; he is a native of Haslingden, Lancashire, and a weaver ; was a member of the Haslingden Cricket Club, and well- known to most of the Clubs in the district; is an Irishman, and generally wears a blue pilot cloth monkey jacket. Was last heard of at Littleborough, near Rochdale. Information to County Police Office, Bacup, Lancashire. — Bow- street, February 28. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Committed for trial at the ensuing Quarter Sessions for Worcester, charged with stealing from the person :— GEORGE HENRY CHATTERLEY, alias GEORGE HENRY LOWE, alias DUCKET, of Birmingham, 22 years of age, 5 feet 3J inches high in stockings, black hair, brown eyes, dark complf/ xion, broad shoulders, rather long nose, and narrow upper lip, has several scars on head, cut on upper lip, and has lost the thumb of right hand ; he is a travelling pick pocket, frequents race and other meetings, and has been con- victed at Hereford as Lowe, Bridgnorth as Chatterley. In- formation to Sergeant Sommers, City Police Office, Worcester. — Bow- street, March 4. Stolen from the person, on 22nd ultimo :— 6 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, numbers believed to be 88358, 88359, 88360, 88361, 88362, 88363. Information to Chief Constable Wilkinson, Kendal, Westmorland.— Bow- street, March 2. Stolen on 24th ultimo, from the person, on the race course, Whitchurch, Salop :— a double- case hunting Watch, maker Bannister ( late Grant), Fleet- street, London, crest— a wolf's head, on outside case. Burglariously entered on 3rd instant., the dwelling- house of the Station Master, at Southwaite Railway Station, Pen- rith, Cumberland :— a No. 3 joiner's Hammer, with the name 1W. Nicholson' faintly marked on the handle ; and two bags were left on the premises— first guano bag, marked on one side, ' Manufacturer, W. and H. M. Goulding, Dublin and Cork', and on the other side ' Super. Aepatria, Co- op. Society'; second, coarse packing bag or sack, which had recently contained oat- chaff, marked on both sides ' W. O. Co.', blood was discovered on the window- sill. Information to Mr. Supt. Fowler. Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable': Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, March 7. Stolen by means of housebreaking on 1st inetant, at Ashby- cum- Fenby :—£ 40 in Sovereigns and Half- Sovereigns, tied up in a white Pocket- handkerchief, marked ' M. Cook'; also a waggoner's light Top- coat, with a cape, two pockets outside, one in left breast, brown bone buttons, and lined with horse collar lining. Information to Mr. Supt. Jarvis, County Police Station, Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow-; March 7. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on the evening of 5th instant, at Middlesbrough :— a black velvet Coat, black braid, covered buttons, black lining, 3 pockets outside, made after the reefer style, loop inside of collar, with gilt letters thereon ; a black cloth double- breasted Vest, black velvet back, horse rug lining, covered buttons, 2 pockets ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, full fronts, lined throughout, has been split above one knee, and darned up, the suit are to fit a small sized man ; 2 baby's night Gowns, white, with a little fancy work across the front; 2 pillow Cases; and a baby's white Shirt. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.— Bow street, March 7. Stolen at Hyde Ash, Leominster, on 25th ultimo, by means of housebreaking :— 2 Vests, one doubte breasted, red flower pattern, strong dark back, the other a dark grey ribbed cloth, with black back ; a slate coloured cravat Tie ; a large red and blue Handkerchief, with red border ; a loaf of Bread and about lib. of boiled Bacon. Supposed by a man who was seen near the cottage, about 11 a. m., one mornirg, carry- ing a large bundle tied up in a blue handkerchief, he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy whiskers; dressed in a dark grey jacket, cord trousers, and black billy- cock hat. Remanded to the Rochford Petty Sessions, of 3rd proximo charged with burglary, au i stealing a quantity of Plate, at Souhend- on- Sea, all recovered :— HENRY DUPREE, 35 40 years of age, dark and swarthy eonipkxion, dark hair and moustache, rather loDg oval face, good' teeth, good figure, smiles in a defiant sarcastic manner when speaking, 5 feet 9° inches high, large scar from a cut across wind pipe, letter ' D.' tattooed on left breast, blue mark across chest, about an inch wide, five scars on left forearm, two of them forming the letter ' T.' scar on inside right leg, just above ankel, first joint of little finger rig'at hand contracted ; dressed in brown tweed suit, black diagonal overcoat, black Cardigan jacket, hard hitter hat, rather high iace- up shoes. Information to Mr. Supt. Hawtree, Police Station, Sou'thend- on- Sea, Essex. — Bow- street, February 28. Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions for Kent, on two charges of housebreaking, at Tonbridge :— GEORGE TURNER, or GEORGE WOOD, of Woollet- st., Maidstone, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, tut', of brown hair on chin, blue eyes, ' D,' left side, partly obliterated, ruptured left side, and wears a trus3 ; dressed in monkey jacket, blue guernsey, fustian trousers, Fenian hat, blue socks, and heavy lace- up boots. Also GEORGE HAVEN, 16 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, small birth mark left hip, two warts back of neck, small cut mark left cheek, light brown hair, and grey eyes dressed in fustian trousers, old dark coat and vest, lace- up boots, a native of Braintree, Essex. Information to Mr. Supt. Barnes, Kent Connty Constabulary, Tonbridge.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen by means of burglary, at Pontscoweyd, Meifod, Montgomeryshire, on the night of 15tli instant, a quantity of Beer, Bread and Cheese :— By THOMAS WILLIAMS, labourer, native of Llanfair, Montgomeryshire, he ia about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, dark HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Absconded on 26th ultimo, charged with stealing an iron grey Gelding, 13 hands high, brass mounted Harness, and an old Cart, painted blue, odd wheels, off side iron rails broken :' i man, 32 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair com- plexion and hair, round full face, left arm paralysed ; dressed in dark overcoat, dark tweed trousers, black felt hat; supposed driven into country. Stolen between 22nd and 24th ultimo, from a field at Fluska, near Penrith, Cumberland :— 2 fat Leicester and long wo » l ewe Sheep, marked at the far side with letter ' T.' Charged on a warrant at Wakefield, with stealing a Horse and Trap, recovered :— MARSHALL WINDNER, or WILSON, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, small dark moustache; dressed in a dark suit, and light snuff- coloured overcoat. Is of gentlemanly appearance, and frequents music halls and houses of ill- fame. Information to Chief Constable Clarkson, Borough Police Office, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street,. March 2. Stolen at Castle Farm Rock, on the night of 21st inst. a mouse coloured mare Pony, aged, about 14 hands high, black legs, brown nose, has been clipped ; also a Bridle and Saddle ; a set of silver mounted Harness; and a horse Rug. Information to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Great Witley, near Stourport, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, February 25. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on 19th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement:— WILLIAM BERNARD NEWARK, a clerk, late of 30, Milman- street, Bedford- square, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair, moustache, and beard, thin face ; dressed respectably. Information to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Esw- stree', March 7. Absconded from Weston- super- Mare, on 24th ultimo, chargfed with stealing a quantity of old Brass and Bags ( recovered), warrant issued .-— HENRY FOWLER, labourer, about 18 years of age, 5 feet GJs inches high, proportionate build, dark brown hair cut very short, no whiskers or mous- tache, dark complexion, browu eyes, and left arm tattooed ; dressed in a dark jacket rather short, light cloth trousers, light mufiler with red spots, lace- uo boot3, and black bowler hat: aud WILLIAM. BENNETT, labourer, 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, proportionate build, dark brown hair cut short, no whiskers or moustache, SiiUpw complexion, and dark brown eyes ; dressed in brown coat and vest, coril trousers, black soft hat, and lace- up boots. Supposed to have gone into Wales. Information to Mr. Supt. Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary Office, Axbridge, or to Sergeant Stichlau, Weston- super- mare.— Bow- street, Mwch 7. Absconded charged on warrant with larceny, as bailee of a watch, at Allexton, Leicester, on 17th Jan. last :— FREDK. GREEN, watch and clock cleaner, from 35 15 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, grey eyes, light blown hair, ginger coloured whiskers and moustache, finder nails dis- coloured, and slender built; " dressed in grey suit, low black billy hat, light lace- up boots, with toe- etps, of respectable appearance, and has with hini a small black leather bag. The watch is a pair case silver verge, No. 2302, cieam coloured dial, the knob for pressing down tha spring at side of case is missing, leaving a small hole, and the top of the case does not fit close ; had a steel chain attached, with imitation medal of Zulu War. Absconded on 17tli ultimo, from the service of his employers, 50, Friday- street, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— HENRY MACKLIN, late of 64, Great Guildford- street, Russell- square, 23 years of age, 6 feet high, pale complexion, black hair, very thin consumptive appearance; dressed ' in dark suit and ulster, black felt hat ; ' a traveller and collector ; has friends in Devonshire and Cornwall. Supposed to be in Liverpool In- formation to Chief Constable Davies, Borough Police Office, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, March 2. Absconded from Wrexham, on 27th ultimo, charged on warrant with stealing a silver consular lever Watch, silver dial, capped movement's No. 14243, and 3s. in Money : — GEORGE TAYLOR, about 27 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, brown curly hair parted on both sides and meets in a curl on top of head, sandy moustache, no whiskers, stout build, mark on forehead supposed from burn or scald ; dressed iu dark cloth clothes, blue cloth overcoat, high- heeled lace- up boots; respectable appearance. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wilde, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Bow- slreet, March 2. Charged on a warrant with stealing from a shop, at Maiden Newton, on 18th instant, £ 8 odd in Silver :— CHA3. ROGERS, alias ROSE, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 iris, high, thin reddish face, fair complexion, light brown hair, small sandy moustache, no whiskers; dreised in new clothes, purchased with part of stolen money, consisting of dark Oxford tweed jacket, straight back, aud hip pockets, brown striped vest, dark mixture tweed trousers, striped shirt, black tie, white turn down collar, low bowler hat, elastic- side boots, which are too long, and a large black and white scarf; he is a hawker of pipes, and as he had his pedlar's certificate renewed at Poole, in the name of Charles Rogers, on 19th instant, he may apply for it to be endorsed in other Police Districts. Information to Mr. Supt. Gale, County Police StatioE, Dorchester, Dorset, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen at Walkden, about 8.20 p. m. 23rd instant : — a pair of boy's riveted lace- up Boots, with toe caps, and three hooks on each side. By a man about 50 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexion, and dark whiskers; dressed in blue pilot overcoat, and soft billycock hat. Information to Mr. Supt, Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester. — Bow- slreet, February 28. Stolen at Little Ouseburn, about 4 a. m. on 12th inst:— , a verge cased silver Watch, glass much scratched, maker's name Snow and Sons, or Snowdon, Birtswith, had attached a flat steel chain, with seal, and a broken key or two . at end ; also about 8s. worth of Coppers. Supposed by two tramps, one about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high : dressed in a dark coat, light coloured trousers, boots supposed fac worn, and wore a cap ; the other about 5 feet 6 or 7 ins. high ; dressed in a dark coat, clogs with grooved heel irons, piece out of sole iron of right foot inside, about li inches long, and wore a cap, had a bag or bundle on his back. Absconded on 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement:— ALFRED JOHN ORCHARD, alias BUCKLAND, No. 2, Heber- villa, Heber- road, East Dulwich, 35 years of age, 6 feet 5 inches high, fair hair, sandy moustache, no whiskers, florid complexion, rather stout, drinks heavily, red nose ; dressed respectably ; a clerk. In- formation to Inspector McWilliam, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen on 25th instant, at Spennymoor :— a small maho- gany Show Case, containing 1 silver Lever Watch, No. 13205; 1 silver Geneva ditto, No. 13243 ; 7 silver Yerge ditlo, Nos. 3904, 788, 2964, 24581, 64367, 1540, 8904, all p'ain faces ; 118 gold Wedding and Keeper Rings, keepers stamped ' 9 ct.,' wedding rings ' 18 ct.' and * 22 ct.'; 4 gentlemen's gold Dress ditto, 4 pair gold Ea rrings; and 10 silver Thimbles, medium size. By a man, " 22 to 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or mous- tache, and slender figure ; dressed in light grey coat and black billycock hat. £ 5 reward will be given to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehec sion and conviction of the thief or thieves, aud recovery oi the property, or in proport'on to the amount recovered. Information to Mr. Supt. Banks, Bishop Auckland, or to Inspector Fleming, Durham County Constabulary, Spenny- moor.— Bow-$ treet, Febiuary 28. Stolen at Pontefract, on 27th iustant:— a blue pilot Jacket, raised seams, 5 pockets, two outside, three inside; a pilot Vest, four pockets outside with flaps ; a pair of woollen cord Trousers, new; a blue pilot Cap, with round knob OQ the crown ; a check Shirt; a pair of strong laced Boots, with heel plates ; a red leather Purse, containing 31s., chiefly in Half Crowns and Florins ; about 3 lb. of Beef, with a bone in centre ; a Rabbit, without skin. By a man, about 33 yrs. of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, dark moustache, no whiskers, stout build ; he was discharged from H. M. Prison at Wakefield, in December last, having been committed for some offence at Sheffield. Information to Mr. Supt. Fearnside, Police Office, Town Hall, Pontefract, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., Febraury 28. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing 25 Watches, found pawned in London :— a Swiss watchmaker, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 fe'^ t 0i inches high, black hair, turn- ing grey, cut short behind, pupil of right eye larger than that of the left one, first joint of third finger of the light hand cut off, and little finger off about half way down, lower teeth pro- jecting ; generally dresses in dark tweed clothing, of clean smart appearance. Information to Head Constable Rogers, Redhill, Surrey.— Bow- slreet, Feb. 25. Charged on warrant with stealing on 22nd instant, a Pelisse aud Cape, since recovered, iu Windsor : — MISS KING, about 23 years of age, tall, thin, rather genteel, fresh complexion, dark hair; dressed in black alpaca dress, dark blue ulster, braided down the back, aud seal- skin hat, with dark amber plush in front. She is also charged at Maiden- head, with stealing from'her lodgings on 17tli instant, £ 1 14s. 6d., in a small box, which she left behind at Windsor. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Taylor, Borough Police, Maidenhead.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen in Stretford, between 5 p. m. and 7 p. m. 21st instant:— two single Blankets, hemmed at one end with red worsted, one far worn ; a grey twill Sheet, large size ; a calico Night- dress, trimmed with needlework ; a faded red flannel Petticoat; a pair of gent's brown cloth Trousers, with dark mixture stripe ; a Book, subject ' Life of Christ,' bound in brown calf skin ; a Book, subject ' Life of the English Martyrs,' bound in brown morocco, gilt. By a man and woman who lodged in the house :— the man is an army pensioner, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair and moustache ; dressed in short blue cloth overcoat, black repp dress coat, is wearing the above described trousers, black billycock hat; the woman about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair ; dressed in a black repp dress, dark grey striped shawl, white apron. The man has worked at Derby, for the L. and Y. Railway Company, he left behind a pair of trousers, with that Company's stamp on them. Information at County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, Feb. 25. Stolen from the George Hotel^ Luton, on the night of 22nd instant:—- a black diagonal cloth Coat and Vest, with the maker's name on a small band inside £ be coat collar ; a long dark mixture Overcoat, single- breasted, with velvet collar, pockets on hips, ticket pockrt arnd breast pocket ; and a pair of dark mixture Trousers, all nearly new ; also a lady: s silver Watch, with ' Pitts' scratched with a pin inside the case ; a long silver Guard, and a short hair Guard.
