The Names of Persons charqed with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6572 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1881 Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear tlie Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *„ » Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tiae persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. MAN JOE, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, medium build, dark hair, whiskers and moustache cropped short; dressed in black cap, moleskin- sleeved waistcoat, moleskin trousers, and strong lace- up boots; is likely to be found amongst boatmen, about canal locks, & c. Stolen from the person at Driffield, with violence, about 11 p. m. on 3rd instant :— a washleather Bag, fastens with a string, containing £ 13 in Gold. Information to Mr. Supt. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Charged on warrant at Liverpool with forgery: ALFRED LEYLAND, a clerk, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown liair. alight light moustache, small features, dark hazel eyes dressed when last seen in a dark tweed coat and vest, brown striped cloth trousers, and hard felt hat; he has been at sea for about 3 years in the capacity of apprentice, he absconded from Liverpool on 13th ultimo. Charged on warrant at Liverpool with forgery - HENRY CHALLONER, a clerk, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fair complexion, fair hair ; respectably dressed, well known in Birkenhead, Seacombe and Egremont, abscon- ded from Liverpool on 31st ultimo. Charged on warrant with obtaining 20 empty rum puncheons, by false pretences :- MARK BYRNE, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, ruddy complexion, hair short and curly, moustache turning grey, no whiskers dressed in light coloured overcoat, black billycock hat, speaks low and slow, he is a corn porter, was last seen in Liverpool on 14th ultimo. Information to Mr. Chief Supt Williams, Liverpool.— Bow- street, February 11. Charged on warrant for forging an order on Messrs Beckett, & Cos. Bank, Leeds, for the payment of £ 262 13s, 6d. :— WILLIAM ELY, a tailor, 39 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, stiff build, pale looking, blue eyes, light hair, heavy moustache, and tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in a brown billycock hat, dark overcoat, and sealskin vest, rather a sharp walker, has a cousin named Samuel Ely. lodging with Mr. Platts, 77, St. Martin's Lane, London. In formation at the Detective Department, Leeds.— Bow- street, February 9. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen at Ayr, on the evening of 8th instant, from the person :— a silver lever Watch, No. 7375, in a German silver case; a steel Albert Chain; and six £ 5 Notes, and four £ 1 Notes, supposed of the Commercial Bank. Stolen from the person with violence, on 5th instant:— an English lever Watch, No. 9124, maker Wainwright, Bir- mingham, with a brass Chain attached. Information to Chief Constable Poyntz, Nottingham, — How- street, Feb. 9. Charged with highway robbery with violence, at Smetli- wick, on 20th ultimo, in company with two other men who hare been convicted ;— JOSEPH WILLIAMS, alias BOAT- BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Whitchurch, Salop, on the night of 12th instant :— two Half- crowns, and 3d. in Coppers; a short brass watch Guard, with gold plated Locket attached ; and about 2 lb. weight of Cheese. Stolen during the night of 31st ultimo, by means of burglary, from dwelling house of John Evans, Lower Forrest, Levant:— a pair of men's strong lace- up Boots, nailed, square nails in heels; 2 pairs, watertight, nailed, square nails in heels, plates on toes of one pair ; a pair of strong watertight boots, were left on premises by the thief, which are nailed, plates on toes and heels, of rough manufacture, supposed to have been made in North Wales, in neighbourhood of Balla or Festiniog. Stolen on the night of 6th instant, by means of burglary' at St. Thomas, Swansea :— about £ 11 in Gold and silver ; a silver lever hunting Watch, No. 1251 ; and an old verge Watch. Stolen during the night of 5th ins1 ant, by means of bur- glary, from a farm- house at Farlington, near Easingwold :— about 6 lb. of cooked Beef, and about C lb. of cooked Bacon. Information to Mr. Supt. Hunter, North Riding Constabu- lary, Heworth, York, or to Inspector Wright, Police Station, Easingwold.— Bow- street February 11. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Bracknell, on 6th instant:—£ 13 in Gold ; £ 4 5s. in Crown Pieces; an old silver Watch, double case, engine turned ; a P. O. Order, from John Burden, to R. Stevens, for £ 2 ; a £ 5 Bank of England Note; and a Cheque on Stevens and Blandy, Bankers, Reading, for £ 5 2s. 2d., dated January 7th, 1881, Thomas Lawrence, payable to Mr. Woodly, endorsed Matthew Woodly, No. 85,406. Information to Mr. Supt.. Borlase, Berks Constabulary, Wokingham.— Bow- street, Felruary 1' Stolen between 10 p. m. on 4th and 7 a. m. on 5th inst., at Ditton Marsh, Esher :— a small Locket and Chain, Asyrian gold; an old- fashion silver Watch, face gone ; 3 Night Dresses, 3 Chemises, and 2 Petticoat Boddices, marked ' McNeal'; 3 small Table Knives; a double- barrel Gun, muzzle loader; about 50 Cigars; 8s. 6d. in Money; and 18 Postage Stamps. Supposed by a mau about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers ; dressed in a brown suit, hard felt hat,, and of rough appear- ance. Information to Mr. Supt. Bungard, Surrey Constabu- lary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, February 9. Charged with housebreaking, at Little Kyre, on 2nd November last, and stealing a silver Watch ( recovered) :— MARK SKYIME, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6} inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, is a labourer, and a native of Madley, Herefordshire; dressed in black monkey jacket, dark dirty trousers, and hairy cap, tied on the top ; he is a deserter from the 11th Foot, advertised in Police Gazette of 6th September, 1880. Information to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Poliee Station, Great Witley, near Stourport, or to Sergeant Long, Police Station, Fenbury, Worcestershire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 7. Stolen by means of burglary, on the night of lst instant at Pollerdine, Worthei, Salop :— a silver Geneva Watch has ' Lae and Tobe, 35, College Green, Bristol,' stamped ou dial, ' D. W.' or ' S. d.' scratched on inner case, and long silver Guard, curb pattern attached ; a pair of very good leather Leggings, buckles on sides, and one brown button on top of each; and a portion of Beef, Bacon, Cheese, and Bread. By JOHN POINER, alias GEORGE GRIFFITHS, alias JOHN DAVIES, alias GEORGE BEESTON, who lived at the house 6 weeks, and was discharged a few days previous to robbery :— from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark whiskers; dressed in moleskin rouud jacket, cord trousers, jimcrow hat, strong good boots, wears leggings ; has the appearance of a farm bailiff, shepherd, or gamekeeper, walks upright, fairly tidy appearance, speaks with a slight Herefordshire dialect ; is well acquainted with most parts of Shropshire, Hereford- shire, and Radnorshire, and talked about Stourbridge, Knighton, & c. ; he is fond of beer, and is very passionate ar> d excitable when in drink. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Skerne, near Driffield, on 4th instant:— a fruit Pie and a quarter, and two ounces of smoking Mixture, paper marked ' B. Hudson, Driffield.' , information to Mr. Supt. Harper, East Riding Constabulary, Driffield.— Bow- strjet, February 7. Stolen by means of burglary on 5th instant, at Spark Brook :— a Timepiece, gilt top, two female figures supposed to be reading a letter in confidence, round face, works are enclosed, strikes the hours and half- hours, when wound up will go for three weeks, marble bottom, stands on rosewood frame, under a glas3 shade, is 18 inches high, and 2 feet in length. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Acocks Green, neer Birmingham, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, February 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found on 12th December last, at Acton Trussell, near Stafford, supposed stolen:— 6 yearling Sheep, in good condition, they will be sold on 29th instant, unless previously claimed. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford.— Bow street, February 14. Stolen at Engine Fold Farm, Hilton Lane, Little Hulton, between 6 p. m. on 6th and 7 a. m. on 7th instant :— a bay brood Mare, in foal, aged, about 15 hands high, black points, ruptured ou off side, white star in face extending down to one nostril. Also a bay Filly, aged 12 months, white star on face. Both are nearly thorough bred. £ 1 reward to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the above, and apprehension of ttje thief or thieves. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, County Police Office, Bolton, Lan- cashire.— Bow- st., February 14. Stolen on night of 10th instant, from the Crook Farm, Great Barr :— a yearling black faced fat Sheep, Shropshire breed, pitch mark ' ( S)' on left side not very distinct. £ 2 2s. reward will be paid by the Secretary of the Great Barr and Perry Barr Association for the Prosecution of Felons on recovery of property and conviction of offender or offenders. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, Police office, Wtduesbury, or to P. C. Given, Great Barr, tear Birmingham, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, February 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Charged with embezzling various sums of Money, at Tunbridge Wells :- JOHN FIELDER, about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, " light brown hair, nose rather high on the bridge, stammers a little, carried a small bag ; dresssd in dark tweed suit, or blue serge trousers, and low round hat; he has been a sailor. In- formation to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, Feb. 14 Stolen at Portobello, Willenhall, on 11th instant:— Four Shillings in Silver. By a man about 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, slight build, loi; g features ; dressed in short d irk monkey jacket, tight trousers, round hard felt hat, and walks erect. Absconded from Clay Cross on 24th ultimo, charged on warrant with embezzlment:— GEORGE alias PETER DOVE, a labourer or osiler at pu'olic- houses, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, clean shaved, stout, rather round shouldered, and lost middle ( supposed) left hand ; a native of Haverhill, Suff ilk. February 11 Charged on warrant at Liverpool, with embezzlement :— ALERED B. CHAPMAN, about 26 or 28 years of age, 5 ft. 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, fallow complexion, dark eyes, slight dark moustache, small side whiskers, dimple on chin, slight build, awkwar d gait, flat footed, scrofula on hands ; is invariably dressed in a black frock coat, and silk hat, is a native of London, fond of drink, and a frequenter of houses of ill fame, and is known among such'houses by the name of Lawdy Charley, he absconded from Liverpool on 31st ultimo. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Williams, Liverpool.— Bow- street, February 11. Stolen from The Three Brooks, Burford, at 6.45 a. m., on 7th instant:— a Ham ( recovered). By a man 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, small whiskers on side of cheeks; dressed in long dark coat, and low jimcrow fiat. Was traced to Cleobury Mortimer, where he took train for Bewdley. Information to Mr. Supt. Galliers, Bridgnorth, or to Police Constable Merrick, Burford, Salop. — Bow- street, February 11. Absconded from Watford, Herts, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— GEORGE HILL, 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, turning grey, and brown whiskers rather thin, shaves rather far back, teeth discolored, round face, rather sallow complexion, grey eyes, stout build, drops his h's in conversation, and is a clerk. Information to Mr. Supt. Isgate or Inspector Penn, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, February 11. Stolen on 3rd instant, at Pembroke :— a black cloth Coat and Vest; a pair of cord Trousers ( large cord); a black and white Scarf; a white cotton Shirt; and a soft felt Hat, the whole about half worn. By a man about 21 years of age, 5 feet 7£ inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and slight figure, a deserter ( off furlough) from 13th Regt. of Toot; he left his uniform behind him. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Clarke, Constabulary Office, Pem- broke.— Bow- street, February 9. Absconded, charged on warrant with stealing .£ 14 17s. 6d.: — JOHN WILLIAM GODDARD, 15 years of age, pale complexion, is a bad walker ; was dressed in a dark grey suit, and black billy liat. Information to Chief Constable Poyntz, Nottingham.— Bow- s'reet, February 9. The man WARREN, charged on a warrant with obtaining a gold Locket, under false pretences at Windsor, has been. apprehended in London, on a charge of fraud, where he. gives the name of CHAS. ADOLPHUS WATERMAN; advertised in Police Gazette of 2nd instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Hayes, Borough Police Office, Windsor.— Bow- st., February 9. Stolen at Crumpsall, between 12 noon and 115 p. m. on 5th instant:— a lady's gold 15- carat opal Ring, two small diamonds iu centie; a lady's ruby Ring, set with five diamonds, one lost ; a silver Locket, oval shape, marked ' E. B. H.' in front; a silver fancy Bracelet. Supposed by two men, one about 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, sandy hair ; dresEed in blue pilot overcoat, and pot hat; he is rather bow legged. The other a tall dark man. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, Old Trafford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 9 Charged with embezzlement:— FRANCIS DARIA, a foreigner, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, black hair and moustache, dark complexion, small lump on left side of nose; dres3ed in dark clothes, high hat, side- spring boots, wears steel albert and locket, respectable appearanoe, speaks six different languages, supposed will endeavour to go abroad, was formerly employed on board jthe S. S. ' Greece,' of the National Line. Information at the Police Station, Bride- well- place, New Bridge- street, London, City. — Bow- street, February 9. Absconded charged with embezzlement : — GEORGE THOMAS HUCKSTEP, grocer's assiatant, 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, black hair and mous- tache, high forehead, thick lips,' bad teeth, blotched face ; dressed iD light overcoat, brown tweed undercoat, light tweed vest, black cloth trousers, black felt hat, flat top, lace boots, may be found at Birchington, near Ramsgate, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 9. Charged on warrant with stealing a bark Chopper, at Kingsland, on 23rd November last THOMAS STEPHENS, 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, very dark complexion, black hair, cut short behind, no whisker3 or moustache ; dressed in dark cloth jacket and vest, soft billycock hat, old dirty corduroy trousers, a dark plaid muffler, and elastie- 3ide boots ; supposed to be in the neiglibourhojd of Brecon. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Dykes, County Police Station, Leo- minster, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen early on the morning of 5th instant, at Oxford :— a small wooden case Time- piece, maker 1 Kirner, Oxford', a small silver Geneva Watch, old ; two cotton Sheets, marked in corner ' Turner,' and numbered ; a white Counterpane, with a lion and unicom in each corner, and the Prince of Wales feathers in centre. ( Sheets and Counterpane since pawned at Reading). By a man who took lodgings for the night, stating he was come from Cheltenham to work aa a plumber on the Great Western Railway. 45 years of age, medium height, stoutish figure, thin dark hair, supposed middle finger of right hand tattooed, and spoke with rather a North Country accent; dressed in dark clothes, a brownish coloured vest, washed out plaid woollen scarf round neck, hard black billycock hat in good condition, supposed Welling- ton boots, and generally of shabby appearance, but clean. Information to Mr. Supt. Head, Police Office, Oxford.— — Bow- street, February 9. Absconded from Chepstow, on 2nd instant, charged with embezzlement :— CHRISTOPHER WELSH, a laborer, native of Chepstow, Monmouthshire, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, proportionate figure, ruddy com- plexion, brown hair, cut short, small moustache, cheeks and chin shaved, round face, has a sore or crack in centre of lower lip, and a gathering in palm of one hand, smart soldierly appearauce; dressed in brown or snuff colour dress coat, pockets on hips, with flaps, light moleskin trousers, light muffler round neck, faded brown cap, with peak of same material, with button on top, and lace- up boots; ho formerly belonged to the Monmouth Militia, and is fond of drink. , i In- formation to Captain Berthon, County Constabulary, Usk, or to Sergeant Lewis, County Constabulary, Chepstow, Mon- mouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Brno- street, February 9, Charged with stealing Money at Stourport on 26th ult. : — awoman from 23 to 24 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins. high, medium figure, rather dark complexion, and brown hair; dressed in black stuff dress with fringe, wore a dress fastener, black jacket, black bat, and elastic- side boots; has very good \ teeth and pleasing appearance and manner, and has the appearance of ageneial servant; was carrying a small size tin box, and left Stourport on the afternoon of 26th ultimo, taking a ticket for Shrewsbury. Her mode of proceeding is to apply for lodging for a few days, stating that » he has just left her situation and is going to a fresh one in the neigh- bourhood in a few days, and robs the house during the tem- porary absence of the inmates and then decamps. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Police Station, Great Witley, near Stourport, Worcestershire, or to Sergeant Oliver, Police Station, Stourport.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen from a public- house, in Dudley, on 3rd instant:— a lady's gold verge Watch, with gold dial inlaid with pearl round the edge, dial slightly scratched with key ; and a lady's gold Chain, with twisted links. ByW man about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender build, pale complexion, and heavy dark moustache; dressed in long light drab over- coat, and wearing a high hat. Information to Mr. Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough Police Office, Dudley.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen on 1st instant:— a clasp_ Pursa, containing 2s, in Gold and Silver ; a flannel Petticoat; a Chemise; and a pair of women's Boots, elastic sides, tips on heels.
