The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marlcs of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, ivith every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6571 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1881 Notice.— It iB requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necossary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Iietters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. Charged with highway robbery with violence, at Smeth- wick, on 20th ultimo, in company with two other men who have been convicted :— JOSEPH WILLIAMS, alias BOAT- MAN JOE, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, fresh complexion, medium build, dark hair, whiskers and moustache cropped short; dressed in black cap, moleskin- sleeved waistcoat, moleskin trousers, and strong lace- up boots; is likely to be found amongst boatmen, about canal locks, & c. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found in a soft water cistern, at Peterborough :— on 1st instant, the dead body of a newly born female child, wrapped in brown paper and with a brick tied to its side ; by a post mortem examination, the cause of death has been ascertained to be fracture of the skull previous to being put in water. On 2nd instant a coroner's inquest held on the body, a verdict of wilful murder was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to the Head Constable, Police Station, Peterborough.— Bow- street, February 4. FORGERY. Charged on warrant at Liverpool with forgery: — ALFRED LEYLAND, a clerk, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, slight light moustache, small features, dark hazel eyes ; dressed when last seen in a dark tweed coat and vest, brown striped cloth trousers, and hard felt hat; he has been at sea for about 3 years in the capacity of apprentice, he absconded from Liverpool on 13th ultimo. Charged on warrant at Liverpool with forgery - HENRY CHALLONER, a clerk, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fair complexion, fair hair; respectably dressed, well known in Birkenhead, Seacombe and Egremont, abscon- ded from Liverpool on 31st ultimo. Charged on warrant with obtaining 20 empty rum puncheons, by false pretences :— MARK BYRNE, from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, ruddy complexion, hair short and curly, moustache turning grey, no whiskers ; dressed in light coloured overcoat, black billycock hat, speaks low and slow, he is a corn porter, was last seen in Liverpool on 14th ultimo. Information to Mr. Chief Supt Williams, Liverpool.— Bone- street, February 11. Charged on warrant for forging an order on Messrs Beckett, & Cos. Bank, Leeds, for the payment of £ 2(! 2 13s. 6J. WILLIAM ELY, a tailor, 39 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, stiff build, pale looking, blue eyes, light hai heavy moustache, and tuft of hair on chin; dressed in a brown billycock hat, dark overcoat, and sealskin vest, is rather a sharp walker, has a cousin named Samuel Ely, lodging with Mr. Platts, 77, St. Martin's Lane, London. Stolen during the night of 31st ultimo, by means of burglary, from dwelling house of John Evans, Lower Forrest, Levant:— a pair of men's strong lace- up Boots, nailed, square nails in heels; 2 pairs, watertight, nailed, square nails in heels, plates on toes of one pair ; a pair of strong watertight boots, were left on premises by the thief, which are nailed, plates on toes aud heels, of rough manufacture, supposed to have been made in North Wales, in neighbourhood of Batla or Festiniog. Stolen during the night of 5t! i instant, by means of bur- glary, from a farm- house at Farlington, near Easingwold :— about 6 lb. of cooked Beef, and about 6 lb. of cooked Bacon. Borlase, Berks Constabulary, Wokingham.— Bow- street, February li Stolen between 10 p. m. on 4th and 7 a. m. on 5th inst., at Ditton Marsh, Esher :— a small Locket and Chain, Asyrian gold; an old- fashion silver Watch, face gone; 3 Night Dresses, 3 Chemises, and 2 Petticoat Boddices, marked ' McNeal' ; 3 small Table Knives ; a double- barrel Gun, muzzle loader; about 50 Cigars; 8s. 6d. in Money; and 18 Postage Stamps. Supposed by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers ; dressed in a brown suit, hard felt hat, and of rough appear- ance. Information to Mr. Supt. Charted with housebreaking, at Little Kyre, on 2nd Novemboi last, and stealing a silver Watch ( recovered) :— MARK SKYIME, 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brov i hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, is a labourer, and a native of Madley, Herefordshire; dressed in black monkey jucket, dark dirty trousers, and hairy cap, tied on the top ; he is a deserter from the 11th Foot, advertised in Police Gazette of 6th September. 1880. Information to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Police Station, Great Witley, near Stourport, or to Sergeant Long, Police Station, Fenbury, Worcestershire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, Feb. 7. has ' Lae and Tobe, 35, College Green, Bristol,' stamped on dial, ' D. W.' or ' S. d.' scratched on inner case, and long silver Guard, curb pattern attached ; a pair of very good leather Leggings, buckles on sides, and one brown button on top of each; and a portion of Beef, Bacon, Cheese, and Bread. By JOHN POINER, alias GEORGE GRIFFITHS, alias JOHN DAVIES, alias GEORGE BEESTON, who lived at the house 6 weeks, and was discharged a few days previous to robbery :— from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark wliiskerj; dressed in moleskin round jacket, cord trousers, jimcrow hat, strong good boots, wears leggings ; has the appearance of a farm bailiff, shepherd, or gamekeeper, walks upright, fairly tidy appearauce, speaks with a slight Herefordshire dialect ; is well acquainted with most parts of Shropshire, Hereford- shire, and Radnorshire, aud talked about Stourbridge. Knighton, & c. ; he is fond of beer, and is very passionatea^ d excitable when in drink. Information to Mr. Supt. Howells, Shrewsbury, or to Sergeant Langford, Minsterley, Salop.— Bow- st- eet, February 7. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Skerne, near Driffield, on 4th instant:— a fruit Pie and a quarter, and two ounces of smoking Mixture, paper marked ' B. Hudson, Driffield.' Information to Mr. Supt. Harper, East Riding Constabulary, Driffield.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen by means of burglary on 5th instant, at Spark Brook :— a Timepiece, gilt top, two female figures supposed t ) be reading a letter in confidence, round face, works are enclosed, strikes the hours and half- hours, when wound up will go for three weeks, marble bottom, stands on rosewood frame, under a glass shade, is 18 inches high, and 2 feet in length. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Acocks Green, near Birmingham, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen on the night of 30th ultimo, by means of burglary, at Middleton Field House, East Yorkshire :— a gentleman's silver lever Watch, a silver Albert Chain, with small Whistle attached, square pattern, with double links; also a small square Missionary Box, containing lid. Information to Mr. Supt. Harper, Driffield, Yorkshire.— Brno- street, February 4. Stolen, by means of burglary, during the night of 1st instant :— a black witney Overcoat; a black cloth do., velvet collar, very shabby; a black silk Umbrella, black handle, silver on handle for crest, a green silk do.; a Zinnella do, both brown handles ; a pair of man's new side- spring Boots; a small square walnut frame Clock, round dial; a damask Table Cover ; a black and green flowered Table Cover; 3 large white handle table Knives ; 3 small do., Carving Knife and Fork ; a very old Carving Fork ; 5 plated Tea Spoons; 3 Table do. ; 3 Dessert do. ; a long silver neck Chain, curb pattern ; and a servant's new lilac print Dress. Information to Mr. Supt. Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham. — Bow- street, February 4. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Charged on warrant at Liverpool, with embezzlement:— ALFRED B. CHAPMAN, ahout 26 or 28 years of age, 5 ft. 5 or 6 inches high, daik hair, sallow complexion, dark eyes, slight dark moustache, small side whiskers, dimple on chin, slight build, awkward gait, flat footed, scrofula on hands; is invariably dressed ia a black frock coat, and silk hat, is a native of London, fond of drink, and a frequenter of houses of ill fame, and is known among such houses by the name of Lawdy Charley, he absconded from Liverpool on 31st ultimo. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Williams, Liverpool.— Bou- street, February 11. Stolen from The Three Brooks, Burford, at 6.45 a. m., on 7th instant :— a Ham ( recovered). By a man 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, small whiskers on side of cheeks; dressed in long dark coat, and low jimcrow hat. Was traced to Cleobury Mortimer, where he took train for Bewdley. Information to Mr. Supt. Gallicrs, Bridgnorth, or to Police Constable Merrick, Burford, Salop. — Bow- street, February 11. Absconded from Watford, Herts, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— GEORGE HILL, 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, turning grey, and brown whiskers rather thin, shaves rather far back, teeth discolored, round face, rather sallow complexion, grey eyes, stout build, drops his h's in conversation, and is a clerk. Information to Mr. Supt. Isgate or Inspector Penn, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, February 11. Stolen on 3rd instant, at Pembroke :— a black cloth Coat and Vest; a pair of cord Trousers ( large cord); a black and white Scarf; a white cotton Shirt ; and a soft felt Hat, the whole about half worn. By a man about 21 years of age, 5 feet 7£ inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and slight figure, a deserter ( off furlough) from 13th Regt. of Foot; he left his uniform behind hiia. Stolen by means, of burglary, on the night of 1st instant at Pollerdine, Worther, Salop :— a silver Geneva Watch Absconded, charged on warrant with stealing.£ 14 17s. 6d.: — JOHN WILLIAM GODDARD, 15 years of age, pale complexion, is a bad walker ; was dressed in a dark grey suit, and black billy hat. Information to Chief Constable Poyntz, Nottingham.— Bow- sreet, February 9. The man WARREN, charged on a warrant with obtaining a gold Locket, under false pretences at Windsor, has been apprehended in London, on a charge of fraud, where 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. February 11 he gives the name of CHAS. ADOLPHUS WATERMAN; advertised in Police Gazette of 2- id instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Hayes, Borough Police Office, Windsor.— Bow- st., February 9. Stolen' at Crumpsall, between 1' 2 noon and 115 p. m. on 5th instant :— a lady's gold 15- carat opal King, two small diamonds in centie ; a lady's ruby RiDg, set with five diamonds, one lost ; a silver Locket, oval shape, marked ' E. B. H.' in front; a silver fancy Bracelet. Supposed by two. men, one about 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build,_ sandy hair ; dressed in blue pilot overcoat, aud pot hat; he is rather bow lego- ed. The other a tall dark man. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, Old Trafford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 9 Charged wiih embezzlement:— FRANCIS DARIA, a foreigner, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, black hair and moustache, dark complexion, small lump on left side of nose ; diessed in dark clothes, high hat, Bide- spring boots, wears steel albert and locket, respectable appearance, speaks six different languages, supposed will endeavour to go abroad, was formerly employed on board , the S. S. 1 Greece,' of the National Line. Information at the Police Station, Bride- well- place, New Bridge- street, London, City. — Bow- street, February 9. Absconded charged with embezzlement : — GEORGE THOMAS HUCKSTEP, grocer's assistant, 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, black hair and mous- tache, high forehead, thick lips, bad teeth, blotched face; dressed in light overcoat, brown tweed undercoat, light tweed vest, black cloth trousers, black felt hat, flat top, la. ee boots, may be found at Bircliington, neur llamsgate, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 9. Charged on warrant with stealing a bark Chopper, at Kingsland', on 23rd November last :- THOMA8 STEPHENS, 18 years of age, 4 feet 5 inches high, very dark complexion, black hair, cut short behind, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark cloth jacket and vest, soft billycock hat, old dirty corduroy trousers, a dark plaid muffler, and elastic- side boots ; supposed to be iu the neighbourhood of Brecon. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Dykes, County Police Station, Leo- minster, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen early on the morning of 5th instant, at Oxford :—. a small wooden case Time- piece, maker ' Kirner, Oxford', a small silver Geneva Watch, old; two cotton Sheets,- marked in corner ' Turner,' and numbered ; a white Counterpane, with a lion and unicorn in each corner, and the Prince of Wales feathers in centre. ( Sheets and Counterpane since pawned at Reading). By a man who took lodgings for the night, stating he was come from Cneltenham to work as t plumber on the Great Western Bail way, 45 years of age, medium height, stoutish figure, thin dark hair, supposed middle finger of right hand tattooed, and spoke with rather a North Country accent; dressed in dark clothes, a brownish coloured vest, washed out plaid woollen scarf round neck, hard black billycock hat iu good condition, supposed Welling- ton boots, and generally of shabby appearance, but clean Information to Mr. Supt. Head, Police Office, Oxford.— — jBow- street, February 9. Absconded from Chepstow, on 2nd instant, charged with embezzlement :— CHRISTOPHER WELSH, a labourer, native of Chepstow, Monmouthshire, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 3 jjichcs high, proportionate figure, ruddy com- plexion, brown hair, cut short, small moustache, cheeks and chin shaved, round face, has a sore or crack in centre of lower lip, and a gathering in palm of one hand, smart soldierly appearance; dressed in brown or snuff colour dress coat, pockets on hips, with flaps, light moleskin trousers, light muffler round neck, faded brown cap, with peak of same material, with button on top, and lace- up boots; he formerly belonged to the Monmouth Militia, and is fond of drink.! ' In- formation to Captain Berthon, County Constabulary, Usk, inches high, 9 stones weight, 36 inches round chest, thin features, prominent nose, which is rather sharp and red, speaks quickly, sharp walker, is in company of his wife, is a painter, but can weave in a mill. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Preston, Lancashire. — Bow street, February 7. Stolen at Corris, Merionethshire, on 1st instant, in a wet state :— a grey striped flannel Shirt, nearly new, man's size, button holes rather large for the buttons, and had been altered to fit the buttons ; also a, light grey mixture flannel Shirt, man's size, calico, button benint^ ftad four rows of fancy work made on the breast with white silk thread, little worn at the wristbands ; supposed by a tramp, who carried a bundle, of short stature ; dressed in grey cloths. Information to P. O. Rowlands, Corris, or to Sergeant Roberts, Police Station, Towyn, Merionethshire.— Bou-. treet, February 7. Stolen on 2nd instant, at Rock Cottage, Aberllyfeni, Talyllyn:— a flannel shirt, grey colour, nearly new, mto'a size, the button holes on the front were made too large, and some stitehes were . put in each corner to make them smaller. Supposed by a returned convict, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, large eyes ; dressed in grey coat, high clowned cloth cap with peak, broad at the top. Information to P. O. Rowlands, Corris, Merionethshire. — Bow- street, February 7. Stolen on the evening of 31st ultimo, from a shop at Grantham :— a pair of men's elastic- side Boots, machine stiched, kid tops, peaked toecaps, size 7. Supposed by a woman, 30 to 35 years of age, medium height, dark complex- ion ; and wearing a light dress. Accompanied by a woman of similar description; wearing a dark dress. Information to Chief Constable Pemberton, Guildhall, Grantham.— Bow- st., February 4. Stolen from a dwelling- house at South Bank, during the night of 30th ultimo :— a pair of shooting Boots with square toes, peaked toe- caps, four white lace holes and three hooks in front, nailed wilh sprigs, and heel- plates on; a double- breasted pilot Jacket, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, large black bone buttons, slightly torn at left sleeve and a little repaired at the back of left shoulder ; a double- breasted blue ribbed cloth Coat, two pockets outside ar d one inside left breast, two odd buttons in front, and not lined ; a grey and red plaid Welsh flannel Shirt, feather- stitched down front, hole in right sleeve and left sleeve, and tl e back repaired; and a dark cloth Cap, turned up all round, with peak. By a man who lodged iu the house a few days, and is ! rom 45 to 50 years of age, .5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, flattish nose, hard of hearing, blue eyes, black ciit mark under left, dark brown hair, bald on top of head, no whiskers or moustache, proportionate figure, stoops when walking, looks like a trampiug labourer- or a puddler, and is a Welshman ; dressed in old moleskin trousers, repaired in front with cloth, and supposed to be wearing either the stolen Jacket or Coat. He left an old coat behind him. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Inspector Silversides, North Ormesby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 4. Absconded on 26th ult., charged on a warrant with fraudu- lently converting a cheque for £ 47 8s. to his own use, known by fish dealers throughout the kingdom, now trading in names of Fletcher, Stockwell, & Co. : — JOHN FLETCHER, Gloucester, late of Whitby, N. Shields, Plymouth, and New- castle- on- Tyne, fish dealer, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, stands erect, dark brown hair, small dark whiskers, thick heavy moustache, swarthy complex- ion, Jewish appearance ; dressed in brown mixture tweed suit, of square pattern, and long grey overcoat, bowler hat, lace- up boots. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter, who holds warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, February 4. Stolen, on 30th ultimo, in Oxford :— a silver Geneva Watch, metal dome, and newly plated. By a man - who, on fordshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. O. Tulle, t/ x N.' on the one side, and a paper label with gilt letters ' The latest fashionable bonnet border No. 5064, t/ x N, 2 doz.' The box also contained a feeding bottle with food, a flannel square, bound with tape, and violet woolwork round the edge, 3 old flannels, with calico bands, 2 new white long dresses, with needlework round- bottom, 3 binders, and 5 napkins. Found on 6th instant, in the Thames and Severn Canal, at the parish of Latton :— the body of a man, at present unknown, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light brown hair, whiskers meeting under the chin, the chin and upper lip shaven ; dressed in a short round jean jacket, pilot cloth double breasted waistcoat, with pearl buttons, fustian trousers, lace- up boots, nails in the soles and heels, blue worsted stockings, necktie with red border, leather strap round waist, and another round the right wrist, has the appearance of a navvy, the body bears no marks of violence, is much decomposed, and appears to have been in the water three weeks or a month ; in the pockets of the clothing were found a common clasp knife ; a steel tobacco box, part of a 2- foot rule ; some Buttons ; and a Farthing.
