No. 6568 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1881 Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, alt LiCtters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must stato dearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may he at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Found in a soft water cistern, at Peterborough :— on 1st instant, the dead body of a newly born female child, - wrapped in brown paper and with a brick tied to its side ; by a post mortem examination, the cause of death has been ascertained to be fracture of the skull previous to being put in water. On 2nd instant a coroner's inquest held on the body, a verdict of wilful murder was returned against some person or persons unknown. Loaf, not recovered, at Shutlanehead, Whitmore, on the night of 20th ultimo : — WILLIAM HENRY GOXALL, alias THOMAS HENRY JONES, labourer, from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, last place of abode Highland, Newcastle- under- Lyne, Staffordshire, light com- plexion, light brown hair, medium build, light whiskers and moustache, about a month's growth, a tuft of hair on chin cut short, and a native of Wybunbury, Cheshire ; dressed in old grey overcoat, pockets torn out, old dark vest, snuff- coloured cord trousers, nearly new, lace- up boots, plain eyelet holes, and soft billycock hat, and is of druken habits. Bauk, on 18th instant:— a man, 34 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown beard and moustache; dressed in long dark overcoat, and black hat, gf od address ; he visits tradesmen's shops, orders goods, principally grocery, ttating he is going to open a shop in a neighbouring town, tenders . the cheques, and draws the balance. Stolen during the night of 29th ultimo, or early on the morning of 30th ultimo, from the Wood Farm, Hanley Castle :— a black faced yearling wether Sheep, marked on both sides with the letters ' B. H.' in pitch, the letters on one side are much plainer than on the other. £ 2 reward will be paid by Mr. B. G. Hall, on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen on the evening of 31st ultimo, from a shop at Grantham :— a pair of men's elastic- side Boots, machine stiched, kid tops, peaked toecaps, size 7. Supposed by a woman, 30 to 35 years of agf, medium height, dark complex- ion ; and wearing a light dress. Accompanied by a woman of similar description ; wearing a dark dress. Information to Chief Constable Pemberton, Guildhall, Grantham.— Bow- st., February 4. Stolen from a dwelling- house at South Bank, during the night of 30th ultimo :— a pair of shooting Boots with square toes, peaked toe- caps, four white lace holes and three hooks in front, nailed with sprigs, and heel- plates on; a double- breasted pilot Jacket, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, large black bone buttons, slightly torn at left sleeve and a little repaired at the back of left shoulder ; a double- breasted blue ribbed cloth Coat, two pockets outside ar. d one inside left breast, two odd buttons in front, and not lined ; a grey and red plaid Welsh flannel Shirt, feather- stitched down front, hole in right sleeve and left sleeve, and tl e back repaired ; and a dark cloth Cap, turned up all round, with peak. By a man who lodged in the house a few days, and is from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, flattisli nose, hard of hearing, blue eyes, black cut mark under left, dark brown hair, bald on top of head, no whiskers or moustache, proportionate figure, stoops when walking, looks like a tramping labourer or a puddler, and is a Welshman ; dressed in old moleskin trousers, repaired in front with cloth, and supposed to be wearing either the stolen Jacket or Coat. He left an old coat behind him. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Simpson, Constabulary Office, South Stockton, or to Inspector Silversides, North Ormesby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, February 4. Absconded on 26th ult., charged on a warrant with fraudu- lently converting a cheque for ,£ 47 8s. to his own use, known by fish dealers throughout the kingdom, now trading in names of Fletcher, Stockwell, & Co. : — JOHN FLETCHER, Gloucester, late of Whitby, N. Shields, Plymouth, and New- castle- on- Tyne, fish dealer, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, stands erect, dark brown hair, small dark whiskers, thick he^ vy moustachc, swarthy complex- ion, Jewish appearance ; dressed in brown mixture tweed suit, of sq^ vare pattern, and long grey overcoat, bowler hat. lace- up boots. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter, who holds warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, Febrxiary 4. * Stolen, on 30th ultimo, in Oxford :— a silver Geneva Watch, metal dome, and newly plated. By a man who, on its being handed to him over the counter, absconded with it, 22 or 23 years of age, medium height, pale face, no hair on face ; was wearing a drab- coloured coat, and of respectable appearance. Description of JOSEPH RUSSELL, charged on warrant under the Bailee Act, with fraudulently converting into his own use, a silver English lever Watch, No. 8808, maker Show, Spilsby, which was entrusted to him for repair :— he is 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, slender build, sallow complexion, sandy hair, long sandy whiskers and moustache, a watch and clock cleaner, last residence Thorne, left on 25th ultimo ; dressed in short dark coat, snuff- coloured vest and trousers, black felt hat, had elastic band round it, and bone behind, old lace- up boots, soles far worn. Information to Mr. Supt. Sykes, Doncaster, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded, charged with embezzling ,£ 95, from hia employers :— WILLIAM BRADING, a clerk, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, long face, high forehead, weak knees ; dress and appearance respectable. Supposed to have friends residing at Fratton, near Land port, Hants, and at Newport and Ryde, Isle of Wight. Warrant issued. In- formation to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, February 2. Charged with embezzling a large sum of Money : — WILLIAM GEORGE COOPER, a solicitor's clerk, 45 or 46 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, very florid complexion, full under the eyes, black hair, whiskers ( long), and mous- tache, dark eyes, proportionate figure, has a wen on left side back of neck, and stoops when walking; dressed in a dark tweed suit of clothes and round hard felt hat. Has been in a similar situation at or in the neighbourhood of Leytonstone, where he is well known. Information to the Chief Constable, Central Police Office, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Northumberland. — Bow- street, February 2. Stolen at Sleafoi- d, on 25th instant :— an old silver verge Watch, double cased, No. 2024, figured face. By a youth, about 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, medium build, no whiskers,' a little dark down on upper lip, light brown hair, inclined to curl, and grows low hea^ down on fore very thick bottom lip, caused by a out, fair complexion ; drossed in old brown cloth cap, short dark coat, . dirty moleskin vest and trousers, sewn across knees, and worn at bottoms, strong lace boots ; was called John, and has worked at Slea- ford a few dajs, with a threshitg machine, lie absconded at 6 a. m. on the day of the robbery. Stolen at Preston, between 11 pin 23rd, and 6 a. m on 24th instant:— a double cased silver Geneva Watch, with movement hand off; a horse- hair Guard, with three keys attached ; a greasy dark blue cloth Jacket, with, two pockets with laps on right side, and one on left, double breasted, velvet collar, and, button at the wrist with one button ; a Sovereign and a Half- sovereign. February 2 dressed in the stolen jacket, greasy cord trousers, black greasy cap, and heavy lace- up boots ; he took a ticket on the morn- ing of 24th instant, at Long Melford Railway Station, for London ; has been employed by the Great Eastern Company, as engine cleaner, in London. Information to Mr. Supt. Chapman, Boxford, or to Sergeant Marsh, Lavenliam, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 31. Charged on warrant with stealing 2 Planes, recovered, between 11th and 17th ult. :- JOHN IRLAM SUMMERS, 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light complexion, hair, and eyes, and is a costermonger ; dressed in dark monkey jacket, fustian trousers, cloth cap, is of dirty appearance, and recently enlisted in the East Kent Militia. Information to Mr. Supt. Noakes, Kent County Constabulary, Ashford.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen in December last, from a stable at the Adelphi Hotel, Llandudno :— a meerschaum Pipe and cigar Holder, horseshoe pattern ; gold albert Guard, round links; set of gold Studs and sleeve Links, marked 1 A. M.,' value £ 6, the prop= ity of A. Mullen. Supposed by a man, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, blotches on face, blue spot between left thumb and nger, large scars right elbow, cut on left fourth finger, mole right cheek ; native of Welshpool. Information to Chief Constable's Office, Carnarvon.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen on evening of 22nd instant, between 6 and 7 o'clock, from a room of an hotel in Glasgow :— about 300 fancy gem and diamond five stone and single stone Rings, various, both lady's and gent's ; an arrow and heart diamond Brooch ; a diamond centre Locket, turquoise and pearl trefoil border; a horse- shoe lapis Locket, with monogrom trade- mark ; a coral and pearl band Bracelet, with same monogram trade- mark; about 70 signet Riugs; about 100 gold Bracelets ; 90 to 100 gold Albert and guard Chains ; about 30 gold Collarettes, about 50 gold Necklets; about 150 pairs gold and fancy Ear- rings ; about 50 half sets Brooches and Ear- rings; about 100 Brooches, all gold and set with stones. Some of the brooches and ear- rings have a monogram trade- mark on a small raised plate on back of them; all the above are of coloured gold and first- class quality ; and a small b'. ack glazed leather Bag, four brass nails at bottom. By two men :— one about 32 years of age, about 6 feet high, dark heavy moustache, wore a small black felt hat, genteel appearance, carried small bag before described in his hand ; the other about 46 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers mixed with grey, wore a dark overcoat and muffler, dress hat, also of genteel appearance. Charged on a Sheriff's warrant, with being concerned in the above robbery JOHN WALLACE, about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark hair, small dark mutton- chop whiskers, heavy dark moustache, dark piercing eyes, sharp prominent nose, thin face, long features, ordinary make ; dressed in dark surtout coat, dark trousers and vest, wore long straight lacing boots, with three or four brass eye- lets at top. Absconded from Berkeley, Gloucestershire, on 28th ult. : — ENOCH BENDELL, a groom, charged on warrant with committing an unnatural offence:— he is about 30 years of age, about £ feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, and fresh complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, heavy boots, aud had a small parcel, containing a jacket, aud pair of trousers, believed to be dark mixture cloth. Information to Mr. Supt. Ford, Dnrsley, or to Sergeant Taylor, Berkeley, Gloucester- shire.— Bow- street, February 2. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Further information respecting THOMAS GREEN, alias CHARKEY, charcoal burner, advertised in the Police Gazette of 22nd and 24th December last, charged on a warrant with fiaud at Llauymynech, on 27th of November last, he was seen in Shrewsbury on 12th ultimo, working with some timber fellers on the Longnor Estate ; left there about that time, and is supposed to be working in Shropshire or Here- fordshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. C, Rogers, Police Station, Llandysilio, Montgomeryshire, who holds the warrant.— Bow- s: net, February 4. Charged with committing an indecent assault in Cow- lane, Chorlton, at 11 a. m 31st ultimo :— a man about 19 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark complexion, rather thin features, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in black serge sack coat' and trousers, black billycock hat, and light boots, had with him at the time two dogs, a large black smooth haired retriever, and a large pug. The man can be identified. Information to Mr. Supt. Bent, County Police. Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, February 4. Charged with obtaining, at Brighton, from three watch- makers : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 102,302, with long gold Chain attached; a lady's silver Geneva ditto, maker ' Ban- bury' on dial; and a lady's gold Geneva ditto, gold face, wystal glass, steel hands, gilt dome, jewelled in 8 holes, and engraved, case, has had initials on the back, but have been erased :— a man, about 20 years of age, rather short, slight make, thin pale smooth face ; dressed in dark clothes, black hard felt hat, and mittens. Information to Chief Constable Barnden, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 2. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Abssconded from Stoke Reformatory, on 1st instant:— JAMES KAVANAGH, 16 yrs. of age, 4 ft. 11 ins. high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, mole on back and on top of shoulder; dressed in brown tweed jacket, drab cord trousers and vest, turban cap, strong nailed lace boots; button stamper, and a native of Birmingham. GEORGE FORD, 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, blue eyes and weak ; dressed in brown tweed jacket, drab cord trousers and vest, strong nailed boots ; a button stamper, and a native of Birmingham. A reward of £ 1 will be given for the apprehension of each of the above. Information to Mr. Supt. Jeffrey, Police Station, Bromsgrove, or to Mr. John McGilchrist, Stoke Reformatory, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, February 4. Committed to H. M. Prison, at Aylesbury, for 2 months, on 29th ultimo, on two charges of larceny :— CATHERINE ELIZABETH WOOD, alias KATE SMITH, 27 years of age, 5 feet inch high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, cut scars left temple, blue marks on right temple, and lisps when speaking; dressed in navy blue frock, trimmed with black braid, grey and black plaid shawl, and black and brown silk turban ; stops at common lodging- houses, makes and sells spectacle cases with embossed flowers worked on them ; is a native of Chelsea, London, and has been travelling in the North of England for last ten years. Information to Mr. Supt. Denson, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.— Bow- street, February 4. Remanded until 7th instant, on a charge of vagrancy, at Hemswell :— WM.
