CONTAINING ' Hit, substance of all Information* received in easts of Felony and of Misdemeanor* of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputd Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, at accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horse* for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6548 MONDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, ail letters addressed to the Editor uWSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tiiie persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. Stolen from the person at Stone, Smithfieldf on 14th inst. : — an old- fashioned gold Watch, plain smooth back, had attached a light coloured gold Albert Chain, square link pattern, and a Key, with green stone and red spots in it. Also stolen from the person on same date :— a calico Bag, containing £ i 4s. ( id. in Silver, 2 Sovereigns, and a Cheque for £ 5, on the Midland Banking Company, Birmingham branch, No. E 023,642, payable to Justice Clarke from William Clarke, and endorsed on back ' Charles iennions.' Five men, all of whom came from, and went back to Bir- mingham On the day of the robbery are suspected. One is to 38 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, black whiskers and moustache ; dressed in brpwn top coat fly front, felt hat, with flat top, wore a flash watch chain, with long links, light colour, and blood stone seal attached. Another about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, iron grey whiskers, no moustache ; dressed in waterproof overcoat, woollen cord trousers, and had the appearance of a farmer. Another about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in brown nap cloth overcoat, dark gloves, and hard felt hat. Another about 23 years of age, fresh complexion, no whiskers or moustache, respectable appearance; dressed in top hat, aud overcoat. And the other 50 to 60 years of age, stout build, rough look- ing ; dressed in brown nap cloth overcoat, buttoned up to the throat. Information to Mr. Supt. Crisp, Stone, Staflforlshire. — Bow- street, December 20. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or other' wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette " no longer necessary. INFO EM AT 10NS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 4th ultimo, a game basket containing a saddle of Welsh mutton, packed in a yard of new grey calico, was sent from Gobowen to Walcot Station, on the Great Western Railway, in Salop, to Mr. Samuel Asbdown, of Uppington, Wellington, Salop, aud after examination it was found to be poisoned. Notice is hereby given, that a reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Government to any person, other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the Uuited Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the attempted murder or murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the attempted murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result Information to tae Chief Constable of Shropshire, Shrews bury.— Bow- street, December 15. FORGERY. Charged under a ' warrant with forgery :— WILLIAM GRATTAN, wholesale boot and shoe maker, of Alsabrook House, Tiverton, well known by most small retail boot sellers ( especially in the western counties), about 46 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair parted in the centre, full beard, never shaves, very stout build, low forehead, and ruddy complexion ; dresses generally in a dark jacket or long coat, plush waistcoat, and soft felt hat with wide brim ; he wears a heavy gold albert chain and occasionally rings on bis finger.! He was convicted at the Central Criminal Court in 1878. Information to Chief Constable Crabb, Borough of Tiverton, Devonshire.— Bow- street, December 17. rOBBerY AND LAECENY EROM THE PERSON. Stolen on 17th instant, from the person, at Stratford upon- Avon :— a calico Bag, containing £ 18 in Gold and Silver, and a £ 10 Note on a Gloucestershire Bank. Also from the person :— a Bag, containing £ 5 in Gold. Also from the person :— 3 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, £ 5 in Gold, and one Florin. Supposed by three men and woman, one man about 55 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches higli white hair and whiskers, fresh complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, and soft billycock hat; another about 55 years of age. 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair whiskers turning grey, light eyes; dressed in a brown top coat, and low flat topped hat ; the other about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, black hair and whiskers, very red nose; dressed in a grey top coat. The woman about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high; dressed in black hat and veil, and brown ulster. Information to Head Constable Rowley, Stratford- upon- Avon, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, December 20. sweep. Information to Mr. Supt. Pierce, Warminster, Wilts. — Bow- street, December 17. Wanted on a charge of breaking into the house of Patrick Corcoran, at Clifton- on- Teme, on 13th instant:— a man, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, with short stubby beard all over his face; dressed in old dirty slop, cotton small cjrd trousers ( broke at knees), old boots worn down at the side ; has the appearan^ of ail old tramp. He is likely to be found in low lodging houses or tramp wards. Information to Mr. Supt. Hardman, Wreat Witley, Worcester- shire.— Bov oi> vet, December 17. _ Stolen by means of burglary, on 13th instant, from the Railway Hotel, Fenton :— a small English patent lever silver Watch, plain white dial, small piece broken off end of long hand, ' W. Taylor' iu large letters' engraved on iusioe outer case; about 9s. in Coppers and small Silver, a quantity of Tobacco and Cigars, and some Cooked Meat. Information to Mr. Supt. McWilliams, Police Office, Longton, or to Inspector Macrory, Fenton, Staffordshire.— Bdjo- sireet, December i' 7. BURGLARY AnD hOUSe BREAKING. Stolen by means of burglary at Clifton- road, Sparkbrook, during the night of 17th instant:— a frock Coat and Vest, black worsted cord ; a pair black cloth Trousers and a Vest, very stout material ; a pair elastic side Boots, beea soled; six silk Handkerchiefs, various colours, all pledges, and part worn ; and about 40) s. in Silver and Bronze Coins. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Tyler, Police Office, King's Heath, Worces- tershire.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen, by means of shoplifting, at Beeford, East Riding, about £ 2 in Silver and Copper Coins; also a quantity of Tobacco. Supposed by tramps on 13th instant. Information to Mr. Supt. Harper, Police Office, Great Driffield, Yorkshire. — Bow- st~ eet, December 20. Absconded, charged with housebreaking at Yowchurch, on 23rd ultimo, and stealing a flannel Jacket, recovered : man 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark swarthy com- plexion, sickly looking, dark hair and: side whiskers and jeard, about a fortnight's growth, and walks very upright; dressed in black soft hat or black haivy cap, tied up at the side, dark jacket off' at hips, dark trousers, rather greasy, aud strong boots, a sawyer, but has be£ n tramping, looking for work amongst farnrers and woodmen for some time. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 6th aud 7th instaut, from a farm house at Baldernock :— 12 stiver Tea Spoons, plaiu pattern with initials ' J. C.' engraved on handles ; 6 do. Egg Spoons, plain pattern ; a do. Fish Fork aud Knife ; do. Bread Basket, rope pattern. Information to Chief Constable Campbell, County Buildings, Stirling.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking, from Kinnersley, Salop, on 13tii instant :— a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, levant tops, patent ' leather toecaps, aud high heels ; an old grey cloth Vest, single- breasted, brown buttons, no collar, white calico back, lined with plaid, has been recently washed, and 3£ d. in copper Monies in pocket. Two tramps are suspected, one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light brown whiskers aud moustache ; dressed in brown coat, light cord trousers, and hard felt, hat. The other 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, round shoulders ; dressed in old dark jacket and trousers, and cap. Stolen by means of burglary, at Morris- green, Middle Hulton, between 1130 p. m. I4th, and 6 a. m. 15th inst. :— a gentleman's gold Watch, chronometer balance, No. 3287, maker Harris and Co., Manchester, has the owners name ' William Bailey, Bow- street, Bolton,' engraved on the wreath or shield on the outside case, had attached an 18- carat gold Guard, albert, curb- pattern, with gold Key as an appendage, blood- stone on one side, and a reddish white stone on the other also about 8 or 9 Florins, 1 Shilling, 1 Sixpence, 1 fourpenny Piece, and 3d. in Bronze. Information to Mr. Supt. Holland, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 17. Stolen by means of burglary at Thorn Park, near Scarborough, during tne night ot 15th instant:—£ i iu Gold, about 10s. in Silver, aud 4d. in Coppers ; 3 silver tea Spoons, marked ' M.'; 1 silver cream Jug, flowered pattern ; 1 bottle of Rum, bottle marked ' Everley Hotel.' Stolen from a field near Newtown, on 6th instant:— n, bay horse Welsh Pony, about 11 hands high, 3 years old, black points, long bang tail, shod, is broken in, aud in good condition and haudsome. C. Trepplin, farmer, Kenilworth. Information to Mr. Supt. Frankton,. Police Station, Warwick.— Bow- street, December 17. Stolen from a stable at Woodcote Green, Epsom, on 9th instant :— a bright bay racing mare, white star on forehead, fired inside hocks, callows enlargement on front of near hind fetlock, recently clipped, black points, long niaue. Supposed by three men— 1st 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fair complexion, sandy hair, whiskers and moustache, shaved under chin, aud delicate- looking ; dressed in b'Own overcoat, supposed name W. MARSDEN, No. 109, Gold hawk- road, Shepherd's Bush ; 2nd, 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout, dark whiskers; dressed in dark check suit, black ieltv hat, flat top ; 3rd, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, and thin ; dressed in stable suit. Stolen from a field near the canal si- le at Bellamour, near Rugeley, about 7th iustant:— a ram Lamb, grey face, long tail, Nraarked ' W. A.,' in good condition. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Inspector Barrett, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 17. Stolen from a field at the Hill Farm, Bishops Frome, Herefordshire, on night of 5th instant:— 6 Ewe Sheep, since recovered, they having been sold iu Worcester Market, the following day. By two men, one about 45 or 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and whiskers round his face, turning grey ; dressed in round billycock hat, dark coat and waistcoat, and dirty cord trousers, walks badly on his feet, gave the name of W. Pulling Bosbury, which is false; the other is about 60 years of age. 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, large bony face, with grey hair and whiskers ; dressed in dark jacket. They represented themselves as brothers, and had the appear- ance of shepherds or farm labourers. Information to Mr. Supt. Ovens, Police Station, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, December 17. Stolen by means of burglary during the night 13th instant, from the ' Three Horse Shoes, Warminster about 12s. 8ilver, 3s. Copper, and about 36 Cigars. Supposed by a lad, about 17 years of age, 5 feet high, brown hair, round features, pale, and stout build ; dressed in an old dark cloth jacket, grey cloth trousers, and hard black felt hat; a chimney LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen at High- street, Chipping Norton, Oxon :— a cloth Coat, since recovered. By a man about 35 years of age, 5 ft. 5 or 6 inches high, slender build, thin face, rather dark, dark hair and moustache ; dressed in a dark jacket, plaid lining, moleskin trousers, turned up at bottom of legs, strong navvy boots, soft cap with button on top, carrying a slop or bundle over his shoulders, a navvy. Information to Mr. Supt. Lakin, County Police Station, Chipping Norton, Oxon.— Bow- street, December 20. Charged on a warrant at Hastings, with stealing on 14th instant, au Overcoat :— WILLIAM HENRY ARNOLD, a stableman, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin, face, sallow complexion, dark hair, slight moustache, no whiskers ; dressed iu snuff- coloured coat and vest, ccrd trousers, patched on the legs and seat, white neckerchief with horse- shoe piu, round hard felt hat, and heavy nailed boots ; will enquire for work at stables or travelling circus's. Infor- mation to Chief Supt. Glenister, Hastings. — Bow- street, December 20. Stolen at Forden, on the night of 15th instant :— a grey flannel Shirt, with white stripe, a red thread iu centre of stripe, shoulders lined with figured print, figured pearl buttons. Supposed by a tramp wearing a good pair of boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Ellis, Welshpool, or to P. C. Edwards, Montgomery.— Bow- street, December 20. P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. December 20 Charged with stealing 6 pieces of Timber ( recovered), on 13th instant ;— a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, ruddy complexion, pockpitted, lost three fingers oil one hand, brown hair, sandy beard, and no whiskers or jpoustache ; dressed in moleskin trousers, check shirt, and clogs ; he left his coat behind him, is a slater, but generally goes about to public- houses, cleaning windows, & c., and sleeps out at night. He is supposed to have a wife in Halifax workhouse, is known in Openshaw, and has been corvicted for stealing brass Steps at Droylesden. Information to County Police Office, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen during the night of 16th instant, at Eastbourne, Sussex:— a medium size rush or flag Basket, containing grainer's Tools, viz., a badger hair Brush, 4 hog hair mottle ditto, a sable hair pencil overgrainer ditto, a hog hair over- grainer ditto, a case of steel graining Combs, all have name Hamilton on handles ; a sash tool Brush, a dusting ditto a zinc Pencil Case, containing several pencil Brushes ; Putty Knife, with ' A. N.' cut on handle ; a paper- stripping ditto, five leather graining Combs, snd a painter's Apron Supposed by a man on tramp, who worked a few hours on 13th and 14th instant, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or G ins. high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers ( few and short) at sides of face, rather heavy dark moustache, shaved under chin, slight figure, a painter and grainer, speaks with north country accent ; dressed in black hard felt hat, black cloth jacket, dark grey cloth trousers, of dirty appearance with paint, and old boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Newnham, East Sussex Constabulary, Eastbourne.— Bow- street, December 20. Charged on warrant with embezzlement :— HENRY BURNHAM, late of No. 105, Bridge- road, Hammersmith, 31 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches hi^ h, stout build, fair complexion, " slight moustache, no whiskers or beard; dressed respectably, is a clerk, and known to P. C. 12, T. R., ( Metro. Police). Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen at Baclair Farm, New Kilpitrick, on 8th instant : — a silver lever Watch, engraved, turned cases, • white dial, steel hands, No. 31181, nearly new. Infor- mation to Chief Constable Campbell, County Buildings, Stirling.— Bow- street, Dec. 20. Absconded on 9th instant, charged on warrant with embezzlement :— WM. HADLEY, late of No. 2, Fye Foot- lane, Upper Thames- street, 30 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, pale complexion, dark brown hair, dark whiskers and moustache ( full), and deformed in both legs ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark trousers, and hard felt hat, and is a baker. Supposed in company with his brother, John Hadley, 26 years of age 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, brown whiskers and moustache, and shaved on chin. Infor- mation to the Inspector, City of London Police, Police Station, 145, Upper Thames Street, E. C.— Bow- st., Dec. 20. Absconded from Bristol on 6th instant, charged on a warrant with with stealing:— JOHN STEVEN, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, whiskers, aid moustache, spare build, high cheek bones, and has a rolling gait when walking; dressed respectably. Is well known to most of the travelling betting men. Absconded from Bristol on 8th inst., charged on a warrant with embezzling and stealing :— W. H. STAINTHORPE, a law clerk,, 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inche* high, mili- tary appearance, florid complexion, blue or light eyes, fair hair cut short, nearly bald on top of head, little whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in a light suit, trousers tight fitting, and high silk hat. Information to the Chief Constable, Bridewell- street, Bristol. — Bow- street, Decenxbet 17. Absconded, charged with larceny, on or about the 1st instant:— JOHN GARRETTY, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 ins. high, fair complexion, small moustache, no whiskers, slight build ; dressed in hard felt hat, dark cloth mockey jacket, elastic- side ( imitation button) boots; is a quick walker, and has served in the Royal Engineers. Warrant issued. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Hayes, Borough Police Office, Windsor. — Bow- street, December 17. Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions at Mold, charged with larceny from his employer : — THOS. ADAMS, 40 years of age, 5 feet 2i inches high, fresh com- plexion, clean face, light blue eyes, dark brown hair, bald, very stout build, a native of Coventry, and n watchmaker. Information to Mr. Supt. Hughes, Holywell, Flintshire. — Bow- street, December 17. Description of HENRY CARTLEDGE, alias LAKE, a returned convict, charged with stealing Fowls ( recovered/, at Talk- o'- the- Hill, Staffordshire, on 12th instant :— he is 45 years of age, 5 feet 2f inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair turaing grey, small whiskers down sides of face, grey eyes, medium build, wart on forehead an'd on light cheek, blue spot corner of left eye, fleshy substance on right wrist, bald front of head, scar and several blue marks on back dressed in a ' lie pi'ot double- breasted reefing jacket, blue or black cloth ' est ' lue pilot t, nusers, and black round hard felt l a'; a collier, has worked at Kingstone and other col- lieries in Yorkshire, Messrs. Goddard's, Longton and S ippery- lane Pit, Hanley, Staffordshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Hall, Tunstall, or to Sergeant Belltield, Kidsgrove, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, December 17. Committed for trial at the ensuing Quarter Sessions at Durham, for larceny from the person, at Darlington:— ALFRED POTTER, 45 years of age, but looks 39 or 40, 5 feet 10 inches high,, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair and moustache, thin figure, white mark about the size of a crown piece on lower part of chest, speaks with a south country accent; dressed in black billycock hat, check scarf, slate coloured overcoat, black vest, brown trousers, and elastic- side boots. He had in his possession a small screw- driver, 2 si'. vi r watcli bows, a gold plated do, and a gold swivel, all new except the screw driver. And THOMAS ADAMS, but was convicted in the name of THOMAS ANDERSON, at the Durham October Sessions in 1872, for larceny from the person :— 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair, rather long whiskers and moustache, proportionate figure scar on right side of forehead, right arm contracted, and appears to have been broken, has been cupped on chest, speaks with a south country accent; dressed in black billy- cock hat, grey scarf, snuff coloured overcoat, black vest, brown trousers, and elastic- side boots. Information to Mr. Supt. Rogers, Darlington, Durham.— Bow- street, December 17. Stolen from the Rose and Crown Inn, Malmesbury, on the night of 9th iustant:— a blue silk Handkerchief ; a pair of red Berlin Braces; and a pair of white eottea Stockings, By a man who slept in the inn ; is supposed to be wearing the Braces and Stockings ; he is a shoemaker, and a native of Shepton Mallett, Somersetshire. Information to Mr. Supt. Luffman, Malmesbury, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, December 17. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described.) On the night of 14th instant, the Roman Catholic Chapel, at Weldbank, Chorley, was entered, and a small plain silver drinking Cup, with lid, and a small cross on the top, was stolen ; the poor box was also broken open, and it is supposed that a small amouni of Money was taken from it. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Beetham, Chorley, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 17. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Obtained by false pretences, at Keighley, on 29th ult. :— a dark dressing Brush, 24 inches long, white deal frame, unplaned, and without back, 8 rows of black bristles.
