C. » # » Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence chargcd, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwardod to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is mado for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Doscrters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. May seek work at railways, docks, or similar works in north of England. Information to Inspector Angus, County Buildings, Greenock.— Dow- street, December 8. ARSON AND WIIFUI BURNING. Committed for trial at the ensuing Assizes at Beaumaris,' charged with arson at Holyhead :— WILLIAM COOPER, 18, yea; s of age, 5 feet 3J inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, sallow complexion, is fond of drawing. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt. Davis, D. C. C., Holyhead, Anglesea.— Bow- street, December 13. FORGERY, A forgery of £ 5 Notes has been committed on the West Riding Bank, Wakefield :— The Notes circulated and in the possession of the police are dated ' 31st March, 1879,' and signed ' S. Gurney, Leatham.' A man about 36 years ol age, 5 feet 11 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, black glossy whiskers, and striking features, well dressed, endeavoured to pass a Note at Hull, supposed to be one of those forged. He is believed to bo accompanied by a tall woman, 28 or 30 years of age, and stylishly dressed. A short stout man passed two of the forged Notes at Hull, at tobacconists' shops. £ 100 reward will be paid to any person who will give such infor- mation as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the forgers and ntterers. Information to Chief Constable Clarkson, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 6. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On 4th ultimo, a game basket containing a saddle of Welsh mutton, packed in a yard of new grey calico, was sent from Gobowen to Walcot Station, on the Great Western Railway, in Salop, to Mr. Samuel Ashdown, of Uppington, Wellington, Salop, and after examination it was found to be poisoned. Notice is hereby given, that a reward of £ 100 will be paid by the Government to any person, other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the attempted murder or murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the attempted murder, who shah give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to tne Chief Constable of Shropshire, Shrews- bury.— Bow- street, December 15. Description of a man, supposed an Irishman, who on 5tli instant shot an Irish labourer, named John Gately, at Solihull :— about 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, full brown beard, not very long, hands rough, like those of a working man ; dressed in long rough grey Ulster coat, rather shabby with band and four buttons behind, and hard fiat top billy cock hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Yardley, Acocks Green, or to Inspector Carbis, Solihull, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, December 13. On 5th instant an Irishman named John Gately was murdered at Solihull, Warwickshire, by another Irishman : — he is between 35 and 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, full brown beard and not very long, rough hands, and appeared to be those of a working man ; dressed in a long rough grey ulster coat, rather shabby, with band and four buttons behind, and a hard flat top black billycock hat. The Secetary of State for the Home Department will pay £ 100 to any person other than a person belonging to a police force in the United Kingdom, who shall give such informa- tion and evidence as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the murder, and will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice not being the person [ who actually committed the murder, who shall give sucli evidence as shall lead to a like result. Absconded from Greenock, on 2nd instant, charged with assault, causing danger to life :— DENNIS McGUIRE, navvy or labourer, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 11 ins. high, stout build, dark hair, fresh complexion, full face, no beard or whiskers, wanta two teeth in front, irish accent, a native of Donegal; dressed in white moleskin trousers, brownish coat, heavy navvy boots, round felt hat, or cloth cap with peak, crown brought down in front and fastened by a hook. And JAMES HUGHES, navvy, about 20 years of ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on 7th instant, from the person, at a Cattle Sale at pershore :— an old- fashioned gold Watch, open face, witn gold Chain and Key attached, No. 2064. Information to Mr. Supt. Stanton, Police Office, Pershore, Worcestershire— Bow- street, Dec. 13. Stolen from the person, in Bolton, about 6.40 p. m. on 6th instant:— a gold lever reversible Watch, makers ' Agar and Sons, Bolton or Bury,' on a white dial, No. 1830, has an inscription inside the inner case—' Presented to by his fellow workmen and friends as a token of esteem and respect, & c., & c., February 9th, 1876'; had attached a gold Albert Chain, square link pattern, to which was appended a square and compass; also £ 2 10s. in Gold, and a Purse with the word ' Tobacco' thereon. Supposed i y a woman about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, and proportionate make ; dressed in dark bonnet and jacket or shawl. A man named SAMUEL HAGUE, with whom she cohabited, is in custody. £ 5 reward will be paid by the owner for information leading to the apprehension and con- viction of the thief or thieves and recovery of the Watch and Chain. Description of JOHN GOLLAWAY, a native of Glasgow, who slept at the tailor's club- liou3e, Lichfield, on 11th ultimo, and presented a card with the name ' John Gollaway' on it, which had been drawn at Leeds, a tramping tailor, charged with burglary, at Kinver, on the night of 1st instant, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inohes high, sallow complexion, dark hair, very slight dark moustache, no whiskers, dark eyes, slyu( h; r build, thin pale features, dirty and miserable looking, and speaks with a Scotch accent; drcs. ed iu old black cloth jacket, New- market cut, brown mixture plaid trousers, fitting tight in the legs and worn at heels, wears no braces or collar, but wears a coloured handkerchief round neck, old clastic side boots, and hard old black hat, boiler- end shape. he is a member of the Tailors' Union, and presents a card at the club- houses in the name of ' T. Hobson,' which is fictitious, Information to HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. The two short- liorn Bullocks, stolen from Copcut Elm, near Droitwich, on 7th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 10th instant, have been recovered, and FREDERICK WILLIAM CLEMENTS, a native of Blockley, Worcestershire, is in custody, charged with stealing them :— he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet * 1\ inches high, very dark brown hair, slight dark whiskers and moustache, fresh complexion, dark grey eyes, thin build ; dressed respectably in black jacket and rest, grey mixture trousers, high hat, sometimes wears a blue slop underneath the jacket, by trade a butcher ; he states he served his apprenticeship at Reading, and left there about 8 years ago, and set up in business at Blockley, where he remained 3 years ; the last 5 years he has been at Leicester, where 2 years ago he was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment, for sheepstealing. In- formation to Deputy Chief Constable Checketts, County Police Office, Worcester.— Bow- street, December 13. Remanded to Her Majesty's Prison, Cambridge, until 17th instant:— RICHARD COUSINS, of Hormead, Herts, late of 3, Furlow- street, fSt. Mary's Cottage, Wands worth- road, Clapham, Surrey, charged with stealing three Sheep on the night of 6th instant ( recovered), 32 years of age, 5 feet 6J ins. hi^ h, dark curly hair, whiskers, and moustache; dressed iu black billycock hat, dark jacket, vest, and trousers, two red and black plaid scarves round neck, lace- up hoots with brass eyelet holes ; states he is a pensioner from the 56th Regiment of Foot. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Ryder, Bishops Stortford, Herts.— Bow- street, December 10. Stolen at Runcorn, on 30th ultimo :— a Horse and Trap. By two men, who hired the same, and sold them at War- rington the same day ( recovered) : one , is about 35 years of ige, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, moustache, no whiskers, red face, aud stout build; dressed iu a snuff- colour overcoat, hard felt hat, and dark striped muffler ; the other is from 25 to 30 years of age, dark complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, about 5 feet 10 inches high, and slender build ; dressed in dark overcoat and trousers, and. hard felt hat. Both had the appearance of horse dealer.-. Information to Mr. Supt. Williamson, Town Hall, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, December 8. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT.' Stolen at Willey Hall Farm :— an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, small dial, supposed No. 1942 or 1792, the names of ' David Jones' and ' Joseph Osborne, of Newtown,' on labels inside of case ; a steel Chain attached to the watch by a piece of thread ; a small Token aud Sixpence hanging to it. By a man who had been at work at the house for three weeks, a native of Herefordshire, about 30 years of age, 5 feet. 9 or 10 inches high, light hair, dark whiskers ; dressed in two slops, cord vest and trousers, strong boots, aud soft felt ha.; , seeks work at farm houses. information to Mr. Supt. Description of THOMAS MARTAN, a commercial traveller, charged on warrant with embezzlement :— he is 34 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, florid complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair, and whiskers, small scar on forehead, has a prominent lump on the big toe joint of one foot ; dressed in a dark suit, dark ulster, low round hard felt hat, which he wears at the back of his head, elastic- side boots, with drab cloth tops. Information to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Office, Sheffield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 15. Charged with stealing at Caterham Valley, Surrey, on ' 8th instant, £ 5 17s. in Gold and Silver:— a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feat 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, On whiskers, slight moustache, very pale face, looks consumptive; dressed in a black cloth coat, mixture trousers, and low hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Redford, Surrey Con- stabulary, Godstone.— Bow- street, December 13. Stolen on 11th instant, from 43, North- st., Hastings :— a silver English lever Watch, maker Barham, No. 7614 ; a small silver curb pattern albert Chain ; a striped silk Neck- tie ; a double headed fox tusk scarf Pin ; a silver gold plated foreign coin ear Drop, wire broken ; and a wooden Pipe. Supposed by a man who lodged in the house two nights, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair and moustache, no whiskers, tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in dark coat and vest, tweed striped trousers, black overcoat, and black bowler crowned hat, a shoemaker, stated he came from Hereford. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Glenister, Hastings.— Bow- street, December 13. Stolen on the night of 9th or morning of 10th instant, from the ' Rose and Crown' inn, Malmesbury :— a'blue Neck- ei- chief ; a pair of red Berlin Braces; and a pair of white cotton Stockings, man's size. By a man who slept at the inn on the night of 9th, a tramping saddler, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 20 inches high, rather thin figure, dark com- plexion, dark hair and moustache, very little or no whiskers ; dressed in black frock coat, black trousers and vest, black necktie, and a white scarf underneath vest, and a Muller cut down hat, is of respectable appearance. Information to Mr. Supt, Luffman, Malmesbury, Wiltshire.— Bow- st., Dec. 13. Stolen at Machynlleth, on 9th instant:— a blue pilot bloth monkey jacket, single- breasted, three buttons in front, the lower one lost, two pockets outside on hips, two pockets outside on breasts, one inside breast pocket, and in which were a number of letters and other accounts, probably addressed to John Davies, of Towyn, Merionethshire, plumber and gas fitter. Supposed by a tramp, from 25 to 30 years of age, about 5 feet 5 or G inches high, swarthy appearance ; dressed in a pair of dirty moleskin trousers and a cap. Absconded on 3rd ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :- ALFRED J. JACKSON, late of No. 04r Elmore- street, Islington, 28 to 30 years of age, 6 feet high, fair hair, slight moustache, rather slim, full face, smart appearance ; dressed in black suit, high hat, with mourning band ; a traveller. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, City of London Police, 20, Old' Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, December 10. Charged at Stockport with stealing a pair of cart Wheels recovered, at Disley, on 17th ultimo :— HENRY SLEIGH a blacksmith, late of Stockport, 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 ins. high, very stout, and square built, scar under left jaw, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, is supposed to be either iu Salford or the outskirts of Manchester. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, County Constabulary, Stockport.— Bow- street, December 10. Absconded, charged with embezzling various sums of Money:— ALFRED DRINKWATER, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers on side of face ; dressed when he left Birmingham, on the 7th instant, in dark brown overcoat, light trousers, hard billycock hat; he is a native of Ledbury, Herefordshire; he has an impediment in his speech. Information to Chief Constable Bond, Birmingham.— Bow- street, December 10. Charged with felony :— a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, very thin, sallow complexion, slight black whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; dressed in a dark blue cloth witney overcoat, velvet collar, under dress dark cutaway diagonal cloth coat, vest, and trousers, side- spring boots, deerstalker hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Hedington, Great Eastern Railway, Liverpool- street, E. C. — Bow- street, December 8. Absconded, charged with stealing on 26th ultimo :— DAVID MURDOCK, 19 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, thick lips, broad nose ; dressed in grey cloth coat, hip pockets, giey trousers, lace boots, heels closely studded with nails, black deerstalker hat. Has a brother, an actor at Accrington, and his mother is an actress in Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, December 8. Stolen from a common lodging- house in Llandidloes, on 5th instant:— a patent silver lever Watch, No. 12165, and a common yellow Albert Chain, with a small Locket attached. By a tramp about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, brown hair, fresh complexion, and no whiskers ; dressed in a soft black hat, dark coat and vest, corduroy trousers ; speaks Welsh, and is a labourer. Information to Chief Constable Danily, Newtown, or to Sergeant Sibbald, Llanidloes, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, December 8. Stolen during the night of 1st instant, from stables at Sutton and Henbarus, ncar Oswestry :— a brown mixture cloth Jacket, two pockets behind, one outside left breast, and one inside right breast, four buttons down front; a Vest of same material, with buttons off; a grey plaid cloth Jacket, two pockets on hips and one inside left breast, three buttons down front, an india- rubber tobacco pouch and a letter addressed ' Mr. Harris, Sutton House, West Felton, Salop,' in the pockets; a pair of grey woollen Stockings, white tops and toes ; a pair of grey Militia Socks; a pair of elastic- side Boots, much worn, imitation buttons and toe- capped ; a pair of leather Leggings, nearly new, four straps and buckles to fasten on each. Supposed by a man, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet G or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, small light whiskers round face, and moustache ; dressed in a hard felt liat, grey plaid jacKet, brown cloth or cord trousers, aid leather leggings. Was carrying a bundle tied up in a blue striped handkerchief. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, December 8. Absconded from Ipswich, charged on a warrant with breaking and entering a dwelling- house, and stealing certain Clothes, Boots, & c., since recovered, on 29th ultimo:— ALFRED CARR, alias BUNNY, about 16 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, dark blue eyes, light brown hair, elbow bones slightly turned out from rheumatism. Is a native of Ipswich, is well known in many of the tramp lodging- houses in Essex and Middlesex as a shoeblack, he • pa'-' ly supports himself by singing in low public- houses, freqi. ents garrison towns, barracks, & c. Infor- mation to Chief Constable Russell, Town Hal), Ipswich, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., December 8. Absconded from Ipswich, on 3rd instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement :— JAS. KEILLAR ELDER, late a clerk in the employ of Messrs. Bacon, Cobbold and Co.. bankers, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, about 15 stone weight, broad square shoulders, large head, full flabby pale face, blotchy, apparently caused by heavy drink- ing, shaves clean, except small whiskers below the ears, very slight moustache— if any, dark brown hair, has a swaggering walk ; wears his hat, which is hard felt and very large in the brim, on back of his head. He is a Scotchman and has rela- tives residing at Leslie, Aberdeen, and always wears wool in his ears.
