The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Th% Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It i « requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending tho same, and all applications in refcrcnco to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. •„• Whenever it is desirod that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwardod to tho Editor for insertion. As no chargo is made for tho insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, nil letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from tho Army, and a! Absentees and Deserters from tho Militia, should be forwarded on War Ofllee Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insortionin the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by the persons forwarding them. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness « f the address or other wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and POLICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. In custody, charged with forgery, two Frenchmen :— One gives the name of ERNEST COOKE, about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, proportionate build, brown hair, whiskers and moustache, turning grey. The other ERNEST TREVILLE, about 18 years of age, about 5 feet ( i inches high, slender build, pale complexion, few whiskers down side of face. They have been passing at Derby, in the name of Cooke, Brown, & Co., Wine, Spirit, and Provision Merchants, Export and Import ; Messrs. Bennett, Central Bank, Derby ; and Mons. Lincoln, Agents for Commercial Security, Nottingham. They send large orders for butter, eggs, & c., to France and Spain, ill the name of Cook, Brown, and Co., and give for reference Mr. Bennett, Central Bank, Derby ; Mons. Lincoln, Nottingham, which are one and the same people. In their possession were found Bill- heads, shewing they bad passed at Southampton in the name of M. C. de " Yollick, Tho Bank, Southampton ; also E. A. Allen and Co, Whole- sale- house Merchants, Shipping Agents, and Wholesale Butter Dealers. At Brighton, iu name of Emmanuel E. De Mosley, Oporto and Lisbon, Commercial Bank, Branch Establishment ; ana Messrs. Baker and Co., Wholesale- house - for Foreign Produce, Import and Export, 21, " West- street At Hull, in names of A. Wilson aud Co., Limited, Wine and Spirit Merchants, Provisions for Steamers, Import aud Export, also Agents for Commercial Security, Manager Mons. Butt; and a large quantity of French Correspondence. They are accompanied by a youth, 16 years of age, a Frenchman and a French woman ( said to bo Cooke's wife), and three young children. Information to Chief Constable Delacombe. Derby.— Bow- ttreet, Novmber 1. Absconded on 19th ultimo, charged with forgery, fraud, and embezzlement:— EDWIN or EDWARD FRANCIS. 35 years of ago, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, black hair and moustache, no whiskers, thin face, small features, large grey eyes, dirty irregular teeth, walks quickly, and throws out tho right foot; dressed in light over- coat, dark walking under do., dark trousers. Is an excellent mechanic ( ironworker and moulder), native of Stratford- on Avon, has been employed at Melbourne, Cambridgeshire, Rugeley, and known at Burton- on- Trent aud Llandudno. Has a cheque book, cheques Nos. II 087829 to 087920, Messrs. Glyn, Mills, & Co., which he may try to utter. Warrant issued. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S. W.— Metropolitan 1' olice, November 1. rOBBERy AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person, at Burton- on- Trent fair, on 29th ultimo:— 2 Bank of Englaud £ o Notes, Nos. 65— a 84711 and 84712, dated 2nd October, 1877, aud stamped at the BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of 28th ultimo, a burglary was com- mitted at the residence of Lady Ashburton, at Melshet- park, near Whiteparish, but no property missing. There were foot marks of two persons round the house, both wearing goloshes. During the same night the residence of Colonel Durey, at Broxmure- park, near Whiteparish, was burglariously broken into and stolen therein :— two silver Candlesticks, ergraved under the bottom ' Legacy left by John Sherwell to R. Bristow, Esq., 1720a silver Snuff Box ; eight silver Tea Spoons and a Dessert ditto, with crest— an eagle standing on a crescent; a pair of Sugar Tongs, sn. me crest; a silver Cruet Stand and five Bottles with silver tops; a gold Seal, onyx handle, with coat of arms ; a ditto, chaise and horses. Some of the articles are mark ad with the crest of one wolf, some with two wolves, and others with an eagle. £ 20 reward will be paid by Mr. Biddulph on the recovery of the property and the conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in Tynemouth, between 6 and 9 p. m. 24th instant:— a gold wedding ring ; gold Geneva Watch ; a silver lever stop Watch, with the name of ' Robert Thompson' engraved on works, also a date ; a silver lever Watch, No. 19521, maker's Lister and Sons, Newcastle; a silver lever Watch, cream coloured dial, gold figures ; 2 long gold Guards, single links, common patteru ; a lady's long gold Guard, small round pattern, with gold Key as appendage ; and a gold Necklace, with Locket attached ; also £ 8 iij Silver, £ 2 infold, and a French Sovereign. Stolen by means of burglary, from the Rectory at White Roothing, on 23rd instant :— a silver Inkstand, 12 inches in diameter, inscription ' Preseuted to the Rev. T. H. North by Lady Meux'; a small gilt Clock, inscription inside ' Presented by Earl and Countess of Listowell'; a small silver Match Box, marked ' C. M. C.'; a small gold Snuff Box, crest Griffin's Head ; a small silver Heart, about 1J ins. long, very old, some initials scratched on it; a paper Knife with silver handle ; 2 silver pencil Cases ; a bunch of gold Seals, crests— Nelson's Head, one Amethyst, crest— a Hying horse. Supposed by two men, both about 23 years of age, about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, one had light moustache with very little whiskers, the other no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark tweed clothej » hard felt hats, nothing on their necks, one had on a red check Shi it. Stolen by means of burglary at Pembury, Kent, during the night of 20th instant:— 3 pilot Coats drab lining ; from 1 to 3 black cloth Vests; ditto woollen cord Trousers 3 cotton Neckerchiefs; 3 pairs worsted Stockings ; 2 or 3 hard felt Hats ; 3 white woollen Scarves, all quite new ; some twist Tobacco ; and 5 bottles of British Wine. Information to Mr. Supt. Barnes, Tonbridge, Kent.— Bow- stree', Oct. 27. Description of a man, charged with housebreaking at Brocton, near Stafford, on 23rd instant, and stealing therefrom a black cloth twill Jacket, single- breasted, buttons to match, j. ockets behind, lined with black lining ; a round black worsted cord Jacket, pockets on hips ; and a pair of light grey Trousers, narrow stripe down outside of each leg :— from 20 to 25 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, slight dark whiskers, medium build, large red rash on one side of face ; dressed in dark jacket, supposed one of the stolen jackets, dark trousers, and black Muller hat. Was traced from Stafford in the direction of Stone, after com- mitting the offence. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, The Green, or to Inspector Chaplain, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, October 27. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Amended description of WILLIAM CHAMBERLIN, charged with stealing a Horse, Trap, and Harness at Ludgers Wall, on 15th ultimo,! advertised in Police Gazette of 22nd ultimo :— he is about 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, small dark moustache, no whiskers; of good address and gentlemanly appearance ; dressed iu dark tweed coat and vest, light tweed or dark mixture trousers, very low crown bowler hat with the Royal Arms aud ' J. R. Pritchard, 1, Brittox, Devizes,' stamped on the silk lining inside, black silk necktie, and stand- up collar. His parents reside at 25, Phil pot- street, Stepney, London. He is well known in the neighbourhood of Pimlico- road, London, and Overton, Hants. Has been iu the employ of Mr. F. Artis, photographer, 7, Unity- place, Woolwich, as a canvasser, since June last, and has also been in the employ as Agent to Charrington, Sells, & Co., Coal Merchants, Upper Chapman- street, St. George's E., London. Information to Mr. Suph Baldwin, Devizes, or to Mr. Supt. Wiltshire, Marlborough, Wilts.— Bow- street, Novenxber 1. Stolen from a field at Oldfield, Chetton, during the night of 22nd instant:— a black mare Pony, aged, about 13 hands high, small white spot on off side, underneath the saddle, tail cut short, Jnd one shoe off the off fore foot. Information to Mr. Supt. Bedford, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone.— Bow- street, Oct. 29. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Charged with stealing, at Burton- on- Trent, on 28th ultimo, a Bag containing 5 gold stone Brooches ; 2 fine gold square Brooches ; 10 silver Necklets ; 8 silver albert Chains ; and 4 silver Seals ; a Parcel containing Jewellery, Eai - ings with gold birds : 8 rolls of silver Brooches and Ear- rings :— a labourer, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, very dirty appearance ; dressed in black round hat, dark jacket, aud cord trousers. Information to Mr. Supt. Harston, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, November 1. Stolen on 18th ultimo, from a beer- house in Reading :— a Ijlack cloth Coat; a ditto Vest; two grey Vests ; a pair of dark coloured Trousers, with broad stripe ; a hard round felt Hat ; and two white Handkerchiefs. By GEORGE HAMPSTEAD, alias THOMAS BARTER, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7} inelics high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, and light moustache ; a private of the 49th Regiment, his uniform was left behind ; was discharged from Millbank Prison, on 7th September las'". Infoimation to Mr. Chief Supt. Purchase, Borough Police Station, Reading, Berks, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bov- strcet, November 1. Charged with stealing a silver Geneva hunting Watch, from his lodgings, Stoke- on- Trent, on 23rd ultimo:— CLARENCE BRIGHT BROUGH, a native of Stafford, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale com- plexion, dark hair aud moustache ; has been a steward on board ship. Information to Mr. Supt. Bowen, Sioke- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, November 1. Sto'eu on 26th ultimo, from No. 3, Castle - square' Reading :— a large metal consular Watch, maker Hancock, Winchester, No. 10316. By WALTER BULL, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair ; dressed in brown slop or jacket, cord trousers, and billycock hat, clothing very dirty and shabby ; is a native of Newbury, Berks. Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- streit, October 29. Charged with stealing, at Aldershot, on 15th instant :— a short brown Coat and Waistcoat, with red stripes iu squares ; a pair of brownish check Trousers, buttons marked ' Beer, Exeter'; a pair of greyish striped Trousers, buttons marked ' Cutler and Reed, St. James'- street'; a black ribbed cutaway cloth Coat, with tail and side pockets ; a pair of shooting Boots with nails around soles and lietls; a white Shirt, marked ' R. F. Cumming'; a black and white shepherd's plaid squash Hat. A man, 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, heavy dark mous- tache and eyebrows, no whiskers. Late a soldier iu the Army Hospital Corps, formerly belonged to the 9th Foot, i3 well known as an Army Reserve man at Falmouth and Exeter, 2 POLICE GAZETTE. November 1 and is supposed to be a native of Launcelles, Stratton, Corn- wall, and is probably wearing a portion of the stolen clothes. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Hants Constabu- lary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, October 29. Stolen from a stable at Babbins Wood, near Oswestry, on the night of 23rd instant:— a pair of tweed Trousers, black and grey mixture, fall fronts, brown bone buttons, calico lining ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, toe capped, man's size, much worn. By a man, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, full features, beard on chin ; sup- posed to have recently left Wrexham, and supposed to have undergone penal servitude, or a long terra of imprisonment; dressed in cord trousers, dark monkey jacket, slop underneath, and black billy hat, follows threshing machines to farmhc uses. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- itreet, October 27. Description of a man who stole a pair of men's lace- up Boots, from Stafford, on 21st instant:— from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or (> inches high, pale complexion, black hair, * clean shaved, medium build, bald on top of head, trade a last maker ; dressed iu dark overcoat, dark trousers and vest, elastic side boots, and black haid felt hat, all much worn. He is also wanted at Hanley, for larceny on 19th instant, a black leather Satchell, being part of the property he stole at Hauley, which he had iu his possession when at Stafford. He stated he was going to Birmingham, Northampton, and London,| iii search of work. Information to Deputy Chief Con- stable Oswell, The Green, or to Inspector Chaplain, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, October 27. Stolen at Weymouth on 22nd instant :— a gold Geneva Watch, recovered ; a single- breasted Chesterfield dark drab Overcoat, with fancy buttons, red and white check lining, four outside pockets, ' Excelsior' on loop of collar. By a man, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, rAthor large nose, light curly hair ( cut short) and moustache, no whiskers, scar on one cheek and bridge of nose, military appearance ; dressed in a brown suit of clothing, red necktie, blue and black ecarf, very low crown bowler hat, wore a ring with a dark heart- shaped stone, had also a double- cased silver watch, with gold Albert Chain, side spring boots. Believed to have served ia the Marine Artillery, sings comic songs at public- houses, and supposed to be making his way to Bristol or Plymouth. Stated his name at Weymouth as GEORGE KING, of Southampton, where his mother kept cabs, & c. At Southampton he stated his mother kept cabs, & c, at Brixton. Left at Weymouth a blue ribbed overcoat. This man is wanted at several places on the South Coast for robbery, and he lodges at respectable private houses stating his mother is coming in a few days, then absconds with any property ho can take. Information to Mr. Supt. Vickery, Polico Office, Weymouth, Dorsetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- it., October 27. Description of PETER SHARP, wanted on a warrant, charged with embezzlement, on 8th ultimo :— about 50 years of ago, 5 feet !) inches high, light brown hair, turniEg grey, little or no whiskers, light moustache, is very deaf; dressed in a grey suit, and high silk hat, walks very erect, aud generally carries an umbrella or walking stick. He has a son in the drapery business in Manchester, and has friends residing at Hanley, Coventry, and Warwick. Information to Chief Constable Bond, Birmingham, who holds the warrant. — Bow- street, October 27. Description of ARTHUR GEORGE LYTTON SQUIRES, charged with larceny as bailee of a Gun :— he is about 2< t or 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, blue eyes, light browu hair, fresh complexion, nose slightly turns up, and very slight moustache; dressed in pepper- and- salt mixture suit, black bowler hat, and wears two plain rings on little fiuger, one gold aud one silver. Information to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Office, Guildhall, Dorchester, Dorset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 27. » Stolen from a dwelling- house in Davyhulme- lane, Crott's Bank, supposed on 21st instant:— 8 Sovereigns, and 2 Half Sovereign*. Supposed by a woman who was cleaning the house, on 21st instant, 18 years of age, J ark brown hair, dressed in striped dress, red shawl, straw hat, with feathers. Her parents reside in Eccles, but she has not been with them for some time. Information at the County Police Office, Old Trafl'ord, Manchester.-^- Bow- street, October 27. Stolen at Dorking, on 24th instant:— a silver Geneva Watch, with a long black jet Chain attached; and a new black leather Purse, containing 7s. in Silver. By a man who lodged iu tho ho ise, the two previous nights, from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 foet 3 or 1 inches high, dark hair and complex- ion, whiskers shaved off, turns his tees inwards when walk- ing ; dressed iu dark clothes, and a black round crowned felt hat, carries an umbrella, and may wear blue spectacles. In- formation to Mr. Supt. Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, October 27. Charged with stealing a quantity of joiner's Tools and two Shovels ( recovered), at Grindon, near Leek, on 18th instant :— a man, 44 years of age, 5 feet 3 inchcs high, fresh complexion, sandy bronm hair, scanty on front of head, light blue oyes, slender build, wound mark ou right forearm which has been broken; dressed in old brown jacket, old black cloth vest, old cotton cord trousers, patched on knees, water- tight boots with toecaps, and light calico hat. He travels about the country, and occasionally is employed as a farm labourer. Information to Mr. Supt. Williams, Police Station, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 27. Stolen at hednesford, at 7 a. m. on 12th inst. an English silver lever Watch, a long silver Guard, and a gold- plated Locket, ( found pledged at Walsall); a dark tweed Jacket and Vest, quite new ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, a black silk velvet Vest, and a puce silk Neckerchief ( not yet recovered). By CHARLES SCOLTOCK, about 21 or 22 years of age, B feet 2 or 3 inclies high, round full face, regular nose, no whiskers, light browu moustache, brown hair, good set of teeth, short neck, broad shoulders, and stout make ; a miner; were light lace- up boots with toe- caps, twill cloth cap, may be wearing some of the stolen clothes, as he left trousers and vest behind. Information to Mr. Supt. Hackney, Brownhills ; or to Sergeant Grupie, Hednesford, near Cannock, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, October 27. Wanted in Dumfries, on a charge of Breach of Trust and Embezzlement:— WILLIAM SLOAN, an accountant or debt collector, 24 years of age, looks older, about 5 feet 11 iuches high, reddish curly hair, small reddish moustache, whiskers supposed shaved off, round full face, two large teeth in front of upper jaw, florid complexion, stout made, smart appearance, slightly knock- kneed, aud very polite when talking; dressed when last seen in a blue jacket, trousers supposed of same material, round hard felt hat, Lome shoes.
