The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6524 MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1880. Notice.— It is requested that nil communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *# » Whenevor it is desired that any person Bliould be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, togetkor with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaic!, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and ® f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Offl. se Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state dearly:—( 1) The amount of tbe reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 3). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by trne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. It is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of tlie address or other- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now dnt'^ ed to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." Stolen from the person, at Mobberley, Cheshire, on the night of 17th instant:— t silver lever Watch, maker's name John Barr, Chariest own, No. 9520 ; white dial, sunk seconds, goint of seconds' finger broken ; had attached a brass linked hain and common watch Key at the end. Stolen from the person, on 16th instant, in Oldham :— a gold English lever " Watch, No. 636, white dial, gold hands, plain cases, maker Bevers, Cross- street, Manchester. Stolen from the person in Preston, on the night of 14tli instant:— a silver lever Watch, flat glass, white dial, gold hands, sunk seconds, gold hinges, No. 7237, maker' R. Scanlon, Preston,' on works. Information to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, October 20. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Snave, Kent, between 10 a. m. and 9.30. p. m. on 17th instant: a double- breasted black frock Coat; a ditto Vest and Trousers, fly fronts, new ; a double- breasted iron grey tweed Coat, pockets at hips and breast; a pair of ditto Trousers, fly fronts, new ; a pair of light colour brown plaid Trousers and Vest, new ; a dark green buck skin handkerchief Case, about 9 inches square, with J- dozen white Handkerchiefs in it, marked ' J. Marshell' in ink; a large white linen Apron, marked in corner ' T. Ticknor'; and a small Sheet, marked'T. J. Ticknor. Supposed by a man who pawned the stolen black suit, at Faversham, Kent, on 18th instant, in the name of MARSHELL, and gave his address Windsor, and he was then wearing the stolen iron grey tweed suit, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, rather slight, full sandy whiskers and moustache, red face; dressed in dark coat or jacket, dark tweed trousers, very old, darned at knees, nailed boots, blacked ai* d polished ; had the articles tied up in the apron or sheet. Information to Mr, Supt. Maxted, Police Station, Sandgate, Kent.— Bow- street, October 22. Charged on warrant with breaking into a warehouse at Longton on 20th instant, and stealing a wagon brace Stock, polished iron with wooden head, and eleven Bits, ranging from 5- 16ths to in.:— WILLIAM COOK, 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, light sandy hair, large Roman nose, clean shaved, and lisps when speaking ; by trade a blacksmith, of drunken habits; dressed in light . stitched hat, old dark overcoat, and dark cord trousers. In- formation to Mr. Supt. McWilliams, Longton, Staifordshire. — Bow street, October 22. Stolen by means of burglary, at West Malling, Kent, on 18th instant:— 1 silver milk Jug; 1 silver toast Rack, one leg broken off, with crest— laurel branches crossed ; 1 silver Waiter, small, with monogram ' T. H. L.'; 3 silver egg Spoons, with crest— laurel branches crossed. Information to Kent County Constabulary, West Mailing.— Bow- street, October 20. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in Chesterfield, on the evening of the 16th instant:— a silver lever Watch, No. 39563, ei. fiine- turning very much worn; a small gold lever Watch, lady's head enamelled on back ; a gold Guard, small links, with gilt Seal and Key and gold Locket attached, locket shape of a book, with swivel neatly worn through and tied with black thread ; a silver keyless Hunting Watch, without glass, gilt albert Guard attached; a silver Geneva Watch, 2 or 3 small old- fashioned silver Watches, and £ 5 in Gold. Supposed by two tramping painters ;— ore about 5 feet 8 ins. high, stout build, and dressed in dark suit, white slop under his coat; the oth « r about 5 feet 9 inches high. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Chesnut Villa, Beveriey- road, St. John's Wood, near Hull, on 11th instant: — 4 prints calico Shirts, Collars to match ; a grey woollen striped Shirt; a black cloth twill frock Coat, bound edges, lined with black silk, breast pocket outside left breast; two pockets inside skirt; a crimson and grey woollen Shawl; a silver Brooch, figure of an Assyrian bull, figured centre ; a" small do. do, formed of letters ' F. A. N.'; a silver do., do., formed of a knot; a do., do., glass, black quill edges ; a Bilver Chain and Locket, with ' Souvenir' written a TOSS ; a coral Necklet, about yard long ; an Opera Glass iu brown Russian leather with gilt fittings, in black case, lined with violet velvet; ^ lb. Cigars ; a travelling Bag, imitation Russian leather, handle on top, two straps across with buckles, and much worn, about 2 feet by 15 inches ; 4d. iu Coppers, and two Postage Stamps. Stolen by means of burglary, at Otford, near Sevenoaks, Kent, between 11 p. m., 16th, and 6a. m. on 17th inst> nt :— 2 large Spoons, 1 soup Ladle, 12 dessert Spoons, 12 Tea do., 12- large Forks, 12 small do., 5 salt Spoons, fish Knife and Fork, 12 fish Knives, mother- o'- pearl handles ; 12 dessert Knives and Forks, all plain pattern, and electro- plated; 1 silver toast Rack, 1 do. sugar Tongs, 6 do. egg Spoons, crest — falcon with wiugs spread ; a tin Box, containing sundry meerschaum Pipes in cases, tobacco Pouch, box of Cigars, met- rschauin cigarette Holder, Book containing private memo- randa, a quart bottle of Sherry, a dark ribbea cloth top Coat, a silver butter Knife, shell pattern, and a walking Stick with bone handle, and silver band round it. Supposed by two men, ono 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, ligf- t whiskers and moustache ; dressed in frock coat, hard felt hat, round shouldered. The other 32 years of age, rather short, dark complexion, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in frock coat, dark trousers, plaid scarf, aud hard felt hat. Smith, of Brimfield, Herefordshire, during the absence of the inmates by eutering through a bedroom window, between 27th ultimo and 10th instaut :— a black cloth Jacket, with black liniDgs, and two pockets outside, and inside pocket; a pair of black Trousers, with fall fronts; a pair of striped cloth Trousers, with fall fronts ; and a plaid Vest, all full sized, and in good condition, and can be sworn to. Stolen by means of burglary, during the night of 12th instant, from the dwelling- house of Colonel Craig Osborne, Camberley, Frimley :— a silver Snuff- box, with a long inscrip- tion, including ' Presented to the Honorable Charles Osborne, by the Corporation of Dublin'; also several Indian ivory Ornaments, including a waggon dv . wn by bullocks. Between 1 a. m. and 7.30 a. m. on 14th instant, a grocers shop, at Aston, was brok » n and entered and stolen therein :— 5 cads of i t ented caper Tea, 28' lb. each ; a double breasted Overcoat, biack corded cloth, lined with grey liaiug, nearly new; 2 pair " « t. men's elastic- side Boots, race, ay 1> t i soled and heeled ; and a cash Box, containing Bdls, & c. Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Gallaway, Constabulary Station, Aston, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, October 18. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. DOLFREY BRINKLEY, advertised in Police Gazette of 20th instaut, charged with stealing two Donkeys, from Grimstone Fen, on 14th instant, has been apprehended and comnitted for trial at Swaffham Quarter Sessions, on 27th instant.— Bow- street, October 25. The warrant issued against a man known as PERKINS, charged with stealing a Horse and Cart, at Tunbridge Wells, is withdrawn, and he is not to be apprehended.— Bow- street, October 25. Charged with stealing a Horse, Trap, and Harness, at Ludger.- shall, on loth instant, they have since been recovered sold at Devizes :— WM. CHAMBERLAIN, junr., about 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, small dark moustache, of good address, and gentlemanly appearance ; dressed in dark tweed coat, light tweed trousers, aud old tweed hat ; his parents reside at 25, Philpot- street, Stepney, London ; he is well known in the neighbourhood of Pimlico, also at Overton, Hants. Information to Mr. Supt. Baldwin, Devizes, or to Mr. Supt. Wiltshire, Marlborough, Wilts.— Brno- street, October 22. Stolen at East Malling, Kent, about 7 p. m. on 18th instant:— a large bay Mare, half bred, ring bone on near fore foot, a mark on near flank where it has been gored by a bullock, in fair condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Hulse, Kent County Constabulary, West Malling.— Bow- st., Oct. 22. The chestnut Mare, described in Police Gazette of 13tli instaut, as stolen from Eltham, Kent, has been recovered, aud WILLIAM WALKER, 172, Green- street, Bethnal Green, London, is remanded at Woolfich until 23rd instant, for stealing the pame, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, . fresh complexion, and brown hair ; diessed in black over- coat, light mixture undercoat, two pairs of trousers, one brown cloth, and one fustian, and soft felt hat. Information to the Director, C. I. D., Great Scotland Yard, S W.— Metropolitan Police, October 22. Stolen from Cradley, near Malvern, on or about 20th ultimo :— a 2J ytars old dark red Heifer, with some white on face, and under belly, cross bred, between a Hereford aud short horn. Information to Mr. Woodhouse, Cradly Hall, near Malvern, or Mr. Supt. Ovens, Herefordshire Constabu- lary, Bromyard.— Brno- st., October 20. Stolen from a field at Bentlev, Willenhall, during the night of 16th instant, property of James Lowe, of West Bromwich :— a brown cob Horse, 5 years old, 14 hands high, long mane and tail, white star on forehead, in good condition, shod all round. Information to Chief Supt. Longden, Con- stabulary Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 20. Found, supposed stolen, in St. Martin's, on 6th instant: a dark brown, nearly black, waggon Gelding, aged, about 15 hands 2 inches high, white star on forehead, white streak OH off side of nose, near hind foot white, slightly lame on near hind leg, jh good condition. Information to Mr. Supt. Gough, Oswestry, or to P. C. Cole, The Lodge, Chirk, Ruabon.— Bow- street, October 20. 2: POLICE GAZETTE. October 27 Description of a man who stole five Cows out of a field at Aldbrough, near Darlington, on the night of 5th instant, and sold them at Barnard Castle Market on the morning of 6th instant to a cattle dealer, who paid him £ 85 ( thirteen £ 5 notes backhouse BanK and £ 20 in gold), the man then absconded :— he is 35 to 40 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair inclined to be sandy, no whiskers or moustache, proportionate make, stoops when walking, had a large green shade over left ( supposed for a disguise) ; dressed in brown coat, black vest, black cloth trousers, hard felt hat. Information to Mr. Supt. Gregory, North Riding Constabulary, Richmond, Yorkshire.— Bow- ttreet, October 18. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Wanted in Dumfries, on a charge of Breach of Trust and Embezzlement:— WILLIAM SLOAN, an accountant or debt collector, 24 years of age, looks older, about 5 feet 11 inches high, reddish curly hair, small reddish moustache, whiskers supposed shaved off, round full face, two large teeth in front of upper jaw, florid complexion, stout made, smart appearance, slightly knock- kreed, and very polite when talking; dressed when last seen in a blue jacket, trousers supposed of same material, round hard felt hat, Lome shoes. When in Dumfries he issued the following card—' South of Scotland Debt Recovery Offices, 60, High- street, Dumfries, Debts up to £ 10 recovered for 2s. per £ Commission. All above £ 10, 6%.— No charge made where nothing recovered. — Books balanced, & c.— William Sloan, Manager.' Was ticket collector for 18 months at Annan Station when a boy, and was afterwards employed on the Railway at Dairy and Glasgow. Information to Mr. Supt. Malcolm, Dumfries.— Bow- street, October 25. Charged on warrant with stealing £ 10 10s. in Gold, at Baslow, Derbyshire, on 11th instant:— JOHN PALMER, stone mason, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion; dressed iu a dark mixture coat, woollen corduroy trousers, and laco- up boots; has been in the Marines, aud has also spent part of his time in America, of which he talks a good deal. Information to Mr. Supt. Barker, Police Office, Bakewell, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, October 25. Stolen at Slaugham, on 18th instant:— a dark brown mixture woollen Coat, with red stripes about an inch apart, Hingte- breasted, one pocket in left breast, one on each hip, and ticket pocket right side ; a short black and white cloth Jacket, pocket each side ; a silk Handkerchief; and an American Puzzle Match Box. By a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, rather sharp features, light brown hair. Was seen to put on the Coat and Jacket, and go towards Redhill. Information to Chief Office, Lewes, or to Mr. Supt. Pocock, Cuckfield, Hayward's Heath, Sussex. - Bow- street, October 25. Stolen on 12 oh instant, at Ellingham, Hants a plaid scarf Shawl ( recovered). By a man, from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, pale complexion, sandy hair and whiskers; dressed in black cloth coat, white jacket underneath, cord trousers and vest, the cord very broad, black soft felt hat, high iu crown. Information to Mr. Supt Brinson, Hants Constabulary, Ringwood.— Bow- street, Oct. 22 Absconded from Northampton, on 19th instait, stealing a leather Bag, ' P. Phipps & Co.' engraved on a brass plate, containing £ 332 in Gold and Silver ; about £ 506 in Cheques; a banker's Diaft, for £ 175 14s. ; and £ 100 in Bank Notes, of • which three or four are Bank of England, and endorsed ' P. Phipps & Co.. 19 | 10 | 80 :— FREDERICK EUSTON EDMUNDS, about 30 years of age, about 6 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, full face, thick neck, black hair, small dark moustache, no whiskers, thick lips, shows his teeth very much when speaking, holds Juis head a little forward, and has a slouching gait; dressed in a light overcoat, dark trousers, and low felt hat. A reward of £ 25 will be paid by Messrs. Phipps and Co., for his apprehension, or for such information as shall lead to his apprehension. Information to the Chief Con- stable, Borough Police Office, Northampton. — Bow- street, October 22. Stolen from a public- house in Stockport, between 3 and 5 p. m. on 18th inst.:— a gentleman's treble milled morning Coat, has two pockets behind in laps, one outside left breast, one inside right breast, ticket pocket right side in seam of coat; a gentleman's Vest, has two ordinary pockets, and watch pocket left side, black cloth covered buttons; a pair of light fawn coloured tweed Trousers, bronze metal buttons, with Lewis's na'ite thereon ; a white calico Bag, containing about £ 50 in Gold and Silver. By WILLIAM ELLIOTT, alias D. W. LAWRELL, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, dark eyes, very much sunk, hair parted in centre and brushes back at the sides, dark moustache, chin clean shaven, slender build, military appearance, good address, maiked on right fore- arm from a bite, which is very red and about the size of a half- crown, also suppo cJ to be tattooed on arm with flag, he left his old clothes behiud, billiard marker, and has been employed as such at Brighton, Soutbport, and other places. £ 5 reward will be given on the apprehension of the thief and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Sto'en from High Lees Farm, Matlock, on 19th instant: — 1 hand Saw, broken handle, 1 new shift Wrench, 3 steel Files, 2 Chisels, 2 Pincers, 3 Gimlets, 1 Hammer, a black billy Hat, a.- d a blue and white cotton Shirt. Supposed by a tramping joiner, employed to do Lome odd jobs, said he came from Worcestershire, from 40 to 50 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, whiskers slightly sandy down sides of face, medium build, stoops forward when walking; dressed in a blue serge jacket, brown vest, light worsted cord trousers, and soft black billy hat. Had with him a joiner's tool basket. Information to Mr. Supt. Sharpe, Policc Station, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, Oct. 22. Absconded charged with embezzlement: — JOHN HENRY SPRY, a clerk, 37 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, beard and moustache, grey eyes ; dress, black frock coat, closely buttoi ed, high black hat, fentlemauly appearance; mother resides at Burraton House, altish, Cornwall, and formerly in the employ of Messrs. She is a begging- letter impostor, representing herself to be a captain's widow and a Freemason ; has iu her possession a letter, referring to the certificate of her husband's death, also one from a Freemasons' Lodge in London; she makes a practice of calling at gentlemen's houses, soliciting subscrip- tions to enable her to obtain forms, which she states she requires from the Freemasons as a Freemason's widow.
